New York lawmakers proposed three new bills last week that would make it difficult for wage theft violators to conduct business in the state. The legislation would bolster the power of state agencies to crack down on wage theft by stripping violators of their liquor licenses or business licenses, as well as issuing stop-work orders against them. The legislation was prompted by reports of rampant wage theft against New York workers, including two investigations published by Documented and ProPublica. The stories revealed that more than 127,000 New Yorkers have been victims of wage theft during a recent five-year period, but that the New York State Department of Labor was unable to recover $79 million in back wages owed to the workers. The stories were based on an analysis of two databases of wage theft violations obtained from the U.S. and New York Labor departments. The databases provided previously unreported details on how much money had been stolen from workers and also shed light on which businesses had committed wage theft. “We knew from our conversations with labor and from our constituent service caseload that wage theft is a chronic problem,” said Sen. Jessica Ramos, a Democrat who sponsored the legislation. “We did not have the data to understand the scale of the issue in New York state until the ProPublica and Documented series came out last year. Having this reporting as a tool set us up to put this package together and focused our attention on��� the capacity of the Department of Labor. To accomplish its mission of increasing the health security of the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that it "conducts critical science and provides health information" to protect the nation. But since President Trump's administration assumed power in January, many of the platforms the CDC used to communicate with the public have gone silent, an NPR analysis found.

Many of the CDC's newsletters have stopped being distributed, workers at the CDC say. Health alerts about disease outbreaks, previously sent to health professionals subscribed to the CDC's Health Alert Network, haven't been dispatched since March. HIV research and monitoring has historically excluded transgender men, creating blind spots in understanding this group’s sexual well-being and happiness. Two recent studies—one out of New York and the other from Germany—suggest that transgender men who have sex with other men have a higher prevalence of HIV than the general population. The German analysis further finds that transgender men who have sex with other men face a host of inequities compared to cisgender gay and bisexual men, including reduced access to sexual healthcare and less satisfying sex lives. [...] Almost three quarters of trans MSM reported their income was insufficient for them to live comfortably, compared to about half of cis MSM. The researchers note that the income disparity could be due to the trans MSM participants being younger on average, but they also suggest discrimination could play a role. In terms of mental health, survey scores indicated both groups experienced various degrees of depression and anxiety from mild to severe. However, trans MSM were almost four times as likely to suffer from severe anxiety and depression compared to cis MSM (15% vs 5%). Furthermore, trans MSM indicated far more suicidal ideation than their cisgender counterparts (41% versus 16%). The survey results also pointed to gaps in sexual satisfaction, with more trans MSM being unhappy with their sex life than cis MSM (34% versus 22%). Trans men more often disagreed that sex was as safe as they wanted (18% versus 11%) and indicated less ability to say no to unwanted sex (23% to 12%). Trans MSM reported fewer sexual partners than cis MSM, and the study authors propose that difficulties in finding partners due to stigma may contribute to less happiness in their sex lives. On the whole, trans MSM also had poorer access to healthcare compared to cis MSM. Fewer had ever received either an HIV test (41% versus 24%) or an STI test (55% versus 45%). Drawing on other research, the authors suggest that one reason for this may be discrimination in healthcare settings, which may cause trans men to avoid seeking sexual health services. The authors go on to say that stereotypes, such as assuming trans men only have sex with cisgender women, may also interfere with providing adequate care. Finally, although trans MSM had higher rates of HIV than the general population, this was lower than amongst cis MSM (2.5% versus 10.7%). A different study conducted in New York City by Dr Asa Radix and colleagues of the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center also found that HIV prevalence is higher in transgender men. In this retrospective analysis, the authors identified a racially diverse group of 577 transgender men who sought care at the facility between 2009 and 2010. Among this group of men (mean age 32 years), less than half (n=250) had ever had an HIV test. Out of the 250 individuals who had, 2.8% (n=7) tested positive for HIV, a significantly higher rate of HIV than the current US national prevalence of 0.41%. Of the 18 trans men who had sex exclusively with cis men and tested for HIV, two (11.1%) were positive.

In this post, I provide a brief overview of how historians engage with different types of sources, with a focus on the mindset of a historian. This insight could be valuable for anyone crafting a character whose profession revolves around history research. It may also prove useful for authors conducting research for their book.

Concept of historical source

The concept of historical source evolves over time. 

Initially, the focus was mainly on written sources due to their obvious availability. However, as time has progressed, historians now consider a wide range of sources beyond just written records. These include material artifacts, intangible cultural elements, and even virtual data.

While "armchair historians" may rely on existing studies and secondary sources, true professional historians distinguish themselves by delving directly into primary sources. They engage in a nuanced examination of various sources, weaving together diverse perspectives. It's crucial to recognize the distinction between personal recollection or memory and the rigorous discipline of historical inquiry. A historical source provides information, but the truth must be carefully discerned through critical analysis and corroboration.

These are documents drafted by a notary, a public official entrusted with providing legal certainty to facts and legal transactions. These documents can take various forms, such as deeds, lawsuits, wills, contracts, powers of attorney, inventories, and many others.

Here we are specifically discussing a lawsuit document from 1211 in Italy.

A medieval lawsuit document is highly valuable for understanding various aspects of daily life because in a dispute, one must argue a position. From lawsuits, we also understand how institutions truly operated.

Furthermore, in the Middle Ages, lawsuits mostly relied on witnesses as evidence, so we can access a direct and popular source of certain specific social situations.

Some insight into the methodology of analysis:

Formal examination: historians scrutinize the document's form, verifying its authenticity and integrity. Elements such as structure, writing style, language, signatures, and seals are analyzed. Indeed, a professional historian will rarely conduct research on a source published in a volume but will instead go directly to the archive to study its origin, to avoid transcription errors.

Content analysis: historians proceed to analyze the document's content, extracting useful information for their research. This may include data on individuals, places, events, economic activities, social relations, and much more. It's crucial to compile a list of witnesses in a case and identify them to understand why they speak or why they speak in a certain manner.

Cross-referencing with other sources: information derived from the notarial source is compared with that of other historical sources to obtain a more comprehensive and accurate view of the period under examination.

Documents of the episcopal archive of Ivrea

Let's take the example of a specific legal case, stemming from the documents of the episcopal archive of Ivrea. It's a case from 1211 in Italy involving the bishop of Ivrea in dispute with Bongiovanni d'Albiano over feudal obligations.

This case is significant because it allows us to understand how feudal society operated and how social status was determined.

The bishop's representative argues that Bongiovanni should provide a horse as a feudal service. Bongiovanni denies it, claiming to be a noble, not a serf. Both parties present witnesses and documents supporting their arguments.

Witnesses are asked whether the serf obligations had been endured for a long time. This helps us understand that in a society where "law" was based on customs, it was important to ascertain if an obligation had been endured for a long time because at that point it would no longer be contestable (it would have become customary).

The responses are confused and inconsistent, so witnesses are directly asked whether they consider Bongiovanni a serf or a noble. This is because (and it allows us to understand that) the division into "social classes" wasn't definable within concrete boundaries; it was more about the appearance of one's way of life. If a serf refused to fulfill his serf duties, he would easily be considered a noble by bystanders because he lived like one.

Ultimately, the analysis of the case leads us to determine that medieval justice wasn't conceived with the logic of our modern system, but was measured in oaths and witnesses as evidentiary means. And emerging from it with honor was much more important than fairly distributing blame and reason.

Other sources

Accounting source: it is very useful for measuring consumption and its variety in a particular historical period. To reconstruct past consumption, inventories post mortem are often used, which are lists of goods found in households, described and valued by notaries to facilitate distribution among heirs. Alternatively, the recording of daily expenses, which in modern times were often very detailed, can lead to insights into complex family histories and their internal inequalities - for example, more money might be spent on one child than another corresponding to their planned future role in society.

Oral source: in relation to the political sphere, it is useful for representing that part of politics composed of direct sources, that is, where politics speaks of itself and how it presents itself to the public, such as a politician's public speech. However, working with this type of source, a historian cannot avoid hermeneutic work, as through the speech, the politician aims to present himself to a certain audience, justify, persuade, construct his own image, and achieve results. This is the hidden agenda that also exists in the most obvious part of politics.

Iconographic source: it concerns art or other forms of "artistic" expression, such as in the case of an advertising poster. They become historical sources when it is the historian who, through analysis, confers upon them the status of a historical source. Essentially, the historian uses the source to understand aspects of the past otherwise inaccessible. The first step in this direction is to recontextualize the source, returning it to its original context. Examining the history of the source represents the fundamental first step for historical analysis.

Diary source: diaries are a "subjective" source, a representation of one's self, often influenced by the thoughts of "others," who can be close or distant readers, interested or distracted, visible or invisible, whom every diary author can imagine and hope to see, sooner or later, reflected on the pages of their writing. Furthermore, they are often subject to subsequent manipulations, and therefore should be treated by historians only in their critical edition; all other versions, whether old or new, foreign or not, are useful only as evidence of the changes and manipulations undergone over time by the original manuscripts.

Writing Notes: Police Investigation of a Missing Person

Once the police department receives a call about a missing person, its response will depend on the circumstances of each case:

People who are elderly, children under the age of 13, people suffering from a mental or physical condition, or possible victims of a crime are considered “special categories.”

Police consider these populations particularly vulnerable and will immediately take action in searching for the missing person.

However, missing people who do not fall under these categories will not receive as much attention. This is because people over the age of 18 legally do not have to return home.

“Unless we can prove that there was an involuntary disappearance, we just file paperwork,” said Giacalone, former NYPD sergeant.

In all cases, the local precinct where the case is reported will handle a case first.

Conducting the Search

Utilizing a trauma-informed approach, interview the last person to see the missing person, where possible and obtain information on any additional key witnesses that may have been identified

Determine if the services of an interpreter are required

Utilize the body-worn camera as appropriate

Obtain a complete and accurate description of the person, including clothing, identification, vulnerabilities (including medical and/or mental health conditions, and current emotional/physical state), and possible destinations

Confirm the place last seen (PLS) and time, or last known place (LKP) and time, if known

Obtain a photograph of the missing person, if available

Transmit the photograph electronically to platoon members, relevant units and agencies, both internal and external

If the reportee and missing person are or have been involved in an intimate relationship

Search the home and the immediate area thoroughly

If permission to search the home or adjoining property is not granted notify a supervisor and add the details to the original eReport

Provide the description and all other pertinent information to the Communications Operator to relay to the field

Phone RMS - Ops as required and provide all pertinent information to ensure that a new missing person eReport is generated

If the missing person is not found within a few weeks, the precinct will hand off the case to the Missing Persons Squad, which will continue working on the case.

On special category cases, police will devote as many resources as possible to the search. They may choose to issue an AMBER Alert or a Missing Vulnerable Adult alert to draw attention to the case.

Police can also turn to media publications or their own social media platforms to ask for help.

Other agencies can also help. The National Autism Association, for example, recently released a toolkit on how to search for children with autism. The report makes specific recommendations for both parents and first responders.

Police will keep searching for a missing person until they can close the case.

What Happened: A trio of lawmakers demanded transparency from the Department of Veterans Affairs on Tuesday, saying the Trump administration continues to “stonewall��� requests for details on the agency’s recent cancellation of hundreds of service contracts.

Mark Takano, said that despite repeated requests, the agency has disclosed incomplete and inaccurate lists that failed to specify exactly which contracts have been canceled. A review by the Democratic members of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs identified 655 contracts canceled by the VA, where previous lists disclosed by the agency included dozens less and contained significant errors.

The lawmakers cited a recent ProPublica investigation into the agency’s use of a flawed artificial intelligence tool to assess VA contracts. That analysis was conducted by a staffer from the Department of Government Efficiency with no health care or government experience. The VA uses contractors for a range of services, including to support hospitals, research and other services aimed at caring for ailing veterans.

Conservation groups filed objections this week to the U.S. Forest Service’s proposed final management plan for the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests in western Colorado. The plan would allow commercial logging on more than 772,000 acres of public lands, including mature and old-growth trees — a 66% increase from the current forest plan.

“A sizeable area of our beloved forests could be sacrificed to commercial logging at the expense of our already dwindling wilderness areas, wildlife habitat and recreation,” said Chad Reich with High Country Conservation Advocates. “Outdoor recreation is a far larger economic driver for our communities than the local timber industry that benefits from cutting these forests. The Forest Service would’ve known that if it had conducted an economic analysis, as required by law.”

Under the proposed plan mature and old-growth forests, which store massive amounts of carbon, could be commercially logged. Forest managers would not be required to identify and protect old-growth and mature trees. Steep slopes across the forests, including Upper Taylor Canyon and Slate River Valley, could also be logged despite the high risk of severe erosion and threats to water quality.

“The proposed plan directly violates federal policy on protecting mature and old-growth trees as a cornerstone of U.S. climate action,” said Alison Gallensky, conservation geographer with Rocky Mountain Wild. “The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests boast the highest carbon sequestration capacity of any national forest in the Rocky Mountain region. Despite this the Forest Service has failed to ensure these vital carbon sinks aren’t logged and sold.”

Objections also challenged the Forest Service’s failure to take urgently needed climate action by prohibiting new coal leasing in the plan.

The Forest Service recommended adding only 46,200 acres of new wilderness area in the final plan. The community’s conservation proposal had called for more than 324,000 acres of new wilderness lands. In addition, the Gunnison Public Lands Initiative offered a broadly supported proposal for new wilderness and special management areas in Gunnison County that was mostly excluded.

“Community members proposed special management area designations to protect pristine forestlands in the North Fork Valley from logging and oil and gas drilling,” said Peter Hart, legal director at Wilderness Workshop. “The Forest Service ignored those proposals and chose not to protect those areas in the new plan.”

The groups also raised concerns about the plan’s failure to address the myriad needs of plants and animals that depend on the forests.

“Over 20 years ago Colorado Parks and Wildlife reintroduced Canada lynx to the San Juan Mountains,” said Rocky Smith, a long-time forest management analyst. “This is a great source of pride for wildlife lovers in this state. Lynx are federally threatened and depend on mature forests with large trees. This plan allows for logging that could easily degrade or destroy much of the best habitat for lynx and their main prey, snowshoe hares, and undermine Colorado’s hard work to reestablish and maintain a viable lynx population.”

The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests also provide habitat for the iconic bighorn sheep and lesser-known species like the Grand Junction milkvetch and the Tundra buttercup. These species, among others, need special designation the Forest Service grants to plants and animals when there is concern about their ability to survive in the area. Many struggling plants and animals were left off the list in the proposed final plan.

“Without the species of conservation concern designation the Forest Service has no obligation to make sure the plants and animals continue to exist locally,” said Chris Krupp, public lands attorney with WildEarth Guardians. “In many cases, the agency decided not to designate wildlife, plants or fish merely because it had no data on their population trends. Without species of conservation concern designation, the number of bighorn sheep in GMUG could dwindle down to almost nothing and the agency wouldn’t have to do anything about it.”

the predictions of a crash have to do with a couple of different elements. some of the Big Ones, in my view, are as follows (not taking into account industry-specific problems or we would be here all day):

there are not enough private sector jobs to make up for the mass layoffs in the federal government. cuts to federal spending in other forms (e.g., NIH research grants) reduce employment in industries that money was funding. both of these factors drive unemployment up and aggregate demand down. people who don't have money coming in spend less, so there's likely going to be a ripple effect on employment from that as businesses dependent upon that spending close. we get the february jobs numbers on friday, folks, so keep an eye out. furthermore, the DOGE business is at least partly contributing to weakening consumer confidence so you'll likely see people holding back on big purchases.

the way this administration conducts itself is erratic, unpredictable, and generally unsound. companies do not like this. it is difficult to make purchasing decisions when you can't be sure whether an import is going to cost 25% more tomorrow than it did today. for firms exporting to countries hitting us with reciprocal tariffs, their costs just went up. because some goods bounce across borders a few times before they're finished products, they're getting dinged multiple times. additionally, there's real hesitancy when it comes to any business dealing with federal dollars now because it's not guaranteed that funds promised will actually go out. you can click here and hear (read) most of this stuff straight from the horse's mouth.

when you have a sustained period of high unemployment and stagnant or negative economic growth, what you end up with is a problem--one that tax cuts cannot fix.

none of these works are specifically about trump's policies but i will explain their relevance. the reinert is good to give you a foundation in thinking and talking about international trade--that'll give you the background to understand what's sort of at play.

the frieden will give you a historical view on the development of our current financial system and how previous recessions/depressions occurred, and the section at the end on the "trilemma" outlines how monetary policy involves a lot of tradeoffs. but this stuff matters for illustrating how the US is economically load-bearing and how it became that way

the stein is useful for looking at steel because that is an industry which trump has paid a good deal of lip service to, so it's worth getting a sense of what exactly happened to the industry in the US and what it takes to actually incentivize domestic production (spoiler: you need government spending and finely tuned trade policies). this is something also addressed in stein's lecture on c-span, which also touches on the economic situation leading up to reagan's election (particularly from 1:27:00 onward)

And yeah, I'm very far from an expert about any of this, but as far as I know that's just. Normal. That's the normal amount of spying they're doing on your phone. I assume the numbers we see are to some extent because having been foiled, a lot of these scripts try repeatedly, since I can't imagine what use thousands of trackers per phone would be even to the great aggregators.

Tracking the phone stuff like screen resolution and battery level is because (apart from that definitely not being considered remotely 'private' so it's Free Real Estate) in aggregate that data can be used to track what phone use patterns are like on a demographic scale and therefore. Where the smart money is.

Almost all of this is getting sold in bulk for ad targeting and market analysis. This does presumably make it very hard to notice when like. Actually important stuff is being spied on, which is why I feel better about Having Apps with the duckduckgo app blocker thing.

My bank's app reportedly sells data to a couple aggregators including Google. Not like, my banking info, but it's still so offensive on principle that I avoid using the app unless I have to, and force stop it afterward.

The patterns that show up on the weekly duckduckgo blocker report are interesting. Hoopla attempts about two orders of magnitude more tracking than Libby, which makes sense because they're a commercial streaming service libraries pay by the unit for access, while Libby is a content management software run by a corporation that values its certification as a 'B' company--that is, one invested in the public good that can be trusted. The cleanness of their brand is a great deal of its value, so they have to care about their image and be a little more scrupulous.

Which doesn't mean not being a little bit spyware, because everything is spyware now. Something else I've noticed is that in terms of free game apps, the polished professional stuff is now much more invasive than the random kinda janky thing someone just threw together.

In other words, they are a pretty suspicious gang, and someone has to look into their spree of crimes before things get out of control. Being one of the best hackers on the team, you were sent to the actual location to hack into their system as best as you could. 

So here you were, in the depths of the night, staking out the parking lot alone, hoping that all goes well and that you can quickly do the job and get out of there as soon as possible. Frankly, it all felt super eerie, especially when it was this late at night, and there weren’t many street lamps to provide enough light to make you feel safe by yourself. 

After looking thoroughly and confirming with your eyes that you were alone, you slowly moved towards the multiple trucks parked in the middle of the parking lot. You managed to squeeze yourself through them and get to a well-lit area; that was when you finally took your laptop out of your backpack and started hacking away. 

To the best of your abilities, you were able to sneak into the laboratory’s system fairly quickly, and you ran over their live security camera footage to check if the criminals were within the building. Immediately, the security camera footage popped up on the screen, and you could quickly identify several men scattered throughout the different labs within the facility. 

“They were probably looking for the right chemical, " you thought, as they were all split up and divided into three groups in each laboratory. While they were trying to find the liquid, you had to quickly hack into the database to retrieve all of the information regarding the facility and the chemicals produced over the years and quickly send them back to your headquarters for analysis. 

After about 10 minutes of transferring all of the files, it was time for you to get out of there and return to let the other agents that were on their way to take over and confront the criminals themselves. You weren’t a field agent, so you couldn’t do much physical combat against the criminals themselves. As much as you wanted to, you weren’t ready for your title as an agent to be stripped off you anytime soon; hence respecting the laws and just doing as you were told would be the wisest decision for now.  

You quickly phoned the headquarters, letting them know you had retrieved all the necessary documents and would finally return to report. As you were permitted to do so, you got up and were going to keep all of your belongings back in your backpack until one of the security cameras began flashing. 

You quickly got back down again, trying to see what was happening. That was when you remembered a crucial detail. 

According to the information you guys have had so far, you knew that the group of criminals consisted of 11 members, so you decided to do a headcount one by one on the screen, starting from 1 to 11.

“8…9…and 10.”

BTS Suga helps fund Korea's largest artist-backed autism center at Severance

Severance Hospital said on Monday it has partnered with BTS member Suga, whose real name is Min Yoon-gi, to establish a pioneering treatment and research center for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The “Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center,” named after the artist himself and funded by his 5 billion won ($3.6 million) donation, held its groundbreaking ceremony at the hospital on Monday.

The new facility will provide long-term, multidisciplinary care for individuals with ASD, offering integrated services such as language, psychological, and behavioral therapy.

It aims to fill a significant gap in Korea’s mental healthcare landscape by supporting not only clinical treatment but also research-driven, individualized care models over the course of a patient’s development.

Suga, known for his ongoing philanthropic activities and interest in mental health -- especially adolescent depression -- was inspired to initiate the project after meeting Professor Cheon Keun-ah, a leading authority in child psychiatry at Severance Hospital, in November of last year.

Through a series of follow-up discussions, the two agreed on the need for a dedicated, mid-to-long-term center that could provide sustained therapeutic support for ASD patients, beyond the short-term interventions currently available.

The donation marks the largest contribution ever made by an artist to the Yonsei University Health System, which oversees Severance Hospital.

Building on these discussions, Suga and Professor Cheon co-developed the MIND program -- a group-based therapeutic model that integrates music into social communication training for children with ASD.

The name MIND stands for Music, Interaction, Network, and Diversity, reflecting its core mission, which is to enhance sensory experience through music, foster social interaction, build relationships in group settings, and promote understanding of individual differences within a community.

From March to June this year, Suga personally participated in weekend sessions with ASD patients to test and refine the MIND program.

He played instruments, encouraged children to express themselves through rhythm and melody, and helped them develop interpersonal skills through group musical activities.

The pilot sessions produced notable results. Children who had previously shown limited verbal communication began expressing their thoughts and emotions through music and lyrics.

Some of the participants displayed musical talent by selecting and keeping rhythm on their chosen instruments. Notably, a patient, who previously showed minimal verbal and emotional expression, began responding to praise and interacted more openly with peers during ensemble play.

Professor Cheon emphasized the importance of these outcomes, noting that the program enables children with limited language ability to build meaningful social connections.

“Suga’s involvement went far beyond financial support,” Cheon said. “His sincerity, consistency, and intellectual engagement throughout these past months deeply moved all of us involved.”

Through music, the Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center aims not only to help children with ASD grow into independent and socially integrated individuals but also to challenge public stigma and reshape perceptions around autism, Cheon added.

Following the center’s completion in September, Severance plans to scale up the MIND program and launch additional music-centered therapeutic projects for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Traditional services such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and speech therapy will also be expanded. To ensure clinical rigor and sustainability, the hospital will conduct trials to validate the program’s efficacy, publish academic papers, and train specialists across disciplines.

“Over the past seven months of volunteering and preparing this program with Professor Cheon, I’ve come to realize just how powerful music can be as a bridge between people and emotions,” Suga said. “Being part of these children’s journey has been both humbling and fulfilling, and I will continue to support their integration into society with everything I can.”

Terms of Service

1. Commercial Commissions:

- I do not work with commercial commissions. Any use of your commissioned artwork is for personal, non-profit purposes only.

- It is not permitted to use the commissioned artwork for commercial purposes, such as resale, mass reproduction, or any other form of profit.

2. Usage Restrictions:

- The commissioned artwork is not allowed to be used for artificial intelligence training or any form of data analysis.

- Reselling the commissioned artwork, especially as an NFT (non-fungible token) or any other form of tradable digital asset, is strictly prohibited.

3. Copyright and Intellectual Property:

- I retain all copyrights and intellectual property rights to the commissioned artwork, even after delivery.

- The client does not have the right to claim authorship of the artwork or use it in any way that infringes upon the artist's rights.

4. Use of Images and Promotion:

- I reserve the right to use images and information about the commissioned artwork, including the final product, for promotional and marketing purposes, unless specifically agreed otherwise.

- When reposting the images, it is highly recommended that you repost the version that is watermarked and/or glazed/nightsahded, which will also be delivered to you along with the "clean" version of the image, to prevent stealing and it being fed to A.I. models.

5. Custom Designs:

- Custom designs created by the artist are not to be resold or used for commercial purposes without explicit permission from the artist.

- If reselling is permitted, the price of the resold design must be equal to or lower than the original price set by the artist, but never higher.

6. Payments and Refunds:

- Payments for commissions must be made as agreed between the client and the artist before the start of the work. All transactions must be conducted in United States Dollars (USD), unless otherwise agreed upon.

- No refunds will be granted after the commencement of the creative process unless there are exceptional circumstances agreed upon by both parties. In that scenario, if the client does not want to continue the project, a partial refund will be granted based on how far I have completed the commission, but if for any reason I am the one who cannot work on your project anymore, I will give you a full refund.

- If you are Brazillian, you will have the special option to use the currency Brazillian, Real R$ (BRL) and pay via PIX.

7. Privacy:

- During the payment and commissioning process, both parties may have access to private information such as full legal names, addresses, and contact details. Both parties agree to respect each other's privacy and refrain from disclosing or doxxing any private information shared during the transaction. Breach of this clause may result in legal action.

8. Limited Liability:

- The artist will make every effort to provide high-quality work and meet the client's expectations. However, the artist is not liable for any damages arising from the use or interpretation of the commissioned artwork. [Example: The infamous YouTuber Verbablaze commissioned a $50,000.00 animation of him and the Hazbin Hotel character, Charlie, where they were being shown in a suggestive situation. Verbablaze posted the animation and got criticized and made fun of because of it. If you were to commission me, and then get into a controversy because of what you commissioned, I would not be held responsible and I will reserve the right to rather or not make a statement on the situation and/or get involved.]

9. Delivery Timeframe:

- While I do not work with strict deadlines, it is generally expected that the commission will be completed within a timeframe of 1-2 weeks to 1 month. However, please note that the actual delivery time may vary depending on the complexity and workload of the project.

10. Revisions:

- I understand that clients may have specific requirements or preferences. I am open to accommodate up to 10 major changes to the commissioned artwork. Please note that these revisions must be requested and finalized before the rendering process begins. Once the rendering process has started, I can accept up to 5 additional minor revisions, but major changes may not be feasible at that stage. Any revisions beyond these limits may be subject to additional charges or renegotiation.

11. Modifications to the Terms of Service:

- The artist reserves the right to modify these terms of service at any time, with prior notice to clients.

I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation. That is why I have chosen my own particular profession, or rather created it, for I am the only one in the world." "The only unofficial detective?" I said, raising my eyebrows. "The only unofficial consulting detective," he answered. "I am the last and highest court of appeal in detection."

The quotation for January 3 in Week 1 contains Holmes's celebrated description of his self-created profession -- auspiciously apt as a starting point for me :-) But I was especially struck by how the passage, as excerpted in The Daily Sherlock Holmes, ends with the assertion that he is "the last and highest court of appeal in detection." I'd forgotten this claim from the original -- perhaps because, for a good while now, my primary frame of reference for Holmesian lore is BBC Sherlock -- and the series sidesteps offering an explicit statement of the "court of appeal" perspective.

What is foregrounded in BBCS is the next thought from the original chapter (which isn't included in the January 3 quotation): that when the police "are out of their depths — which, by the way, is their normal state — the matter is laid before me." What BBCS eschews and retains in its presentation thus sharpens the image of Sherlock as arrogant. The two observations aren't equivalent in triangulating Sherlock-as-consulting-detective, especially as the former one places Holmes in relation to people in jeopardy or in harm's way collaterally -- individuals in specific circumstances, not mere abstractions. There are so many possible nuances for the reasons behind why a court of appeal is needed in investigations. One is certainly Sherlock's belief that he is singular, and quite confident that it should be thus; but it also conveys the need for advocacy as a reparative force, in the face of institutional indifference or the weighting of societal norms to favor those with power. Consulting detectiveness isn't simply puzzle-solving in the service of self-interested expedience, conducted by an uncaring discriminator of fact (a "high-functioning sociopath"). The "court of appeal" concept does finally appear in BBCS, at the very end of the third episode of the thematically erratic fourth series -- although the words are spoken by Mary, in the valedictory soliloquy that was gifted to her character, toward whatever end it was supposed to achieve. Unlike ACD canon, then, it arrives as something of an afterthought.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has frozen all of its election security work and is reviewing everything it has done to help state and local officials secure their elections for the past eight years, WIRED has learned. The move represents the first major example of the country’s cyber defense agency accommodating President Donald Trump’s false claims of election fraud and online censorship.

In a memo sent Friday to all CISA employees and obtained by WIRED, CISA’s acting director, Bridget Bean, said she was ordering “a review and assessment” of every position at the agency related to election security and countering mis- and disinformation, “as well as every election security and [mis-, dis-, and malinformation] product, activity, service, and program that has been carried out” since the federal government designated election systems as critical infrastructure in 2017.

“CISA will pause all elections security activities until the completion of this review,” Bean added. The agency is also cutting off funding for these activities at the Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing & Analysis Center, a group funded by the Department of Homeland Security that has served as a coordinating body for the elections community.

In her memo, Bean confirmed that CISA had, as first reported by Politico, placed employees “initially identified to be associated with the elections security activities and the MDM program” on administrative leave on February 7.

“It is necessary to rescope the agency's election security activities to ensure CISA is focused exclusively on executing its cyber and physical security mission,” she told employees in the memo.

While Bean is temporarily leading CISA, she is officially the agency’s executive director, its top career position. CISA’s first director created the executive-director role to provide continuity during political transitions. Previously, Bean was a Trump appointee at the Federal Emergency Management Agency during his first term.

In justifying CISA’s internal review, which will conclude on March 6, Bean pointed to Trump’s January 20 executive order on “ending federal censorship.” Conservatives have argued that CISA censored their speech by coordinating with tech companies to identify online misinformation in 2020, during the final year of Trump’s first term. CISA has denied conducting any censorship, and the US Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit over the government’s work. But in the wake of the backlash, CISA halted most conversations with tech platforms about online mis- and disinformation.

CISA and DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Since 2017, state and local election officials have relied on CISA’s expertise and resources—as well as its partnerships with other agencies—to improve their physical and digital security. Through on-site consultations and online guidance, CISA has helped election administrators secure voting infrastructure against hackers, harden polling places against active shooters, and create polling-place backup plans to deal with ballot shortages or power outages.

Election supervisors have always struggled to overcome serious funding challenges, but in recent years, their jobs have become even more stressful as intense voter scrutiny has given way to harassment and even death threats. Election officials of both parties have repeatedly praised CISA for its apolitical support of their work, saying the agency’s recommendations and free security services have been critical in boosting their own efforts.

But that bipartisan accord began fraying after the 2020 election, as some conservative election officials started criticizing the agency for its focus on mis- and disinformation. Congressional Republicans joined the fray as well, calling CISA “the nerve center of the federal government’s domestic surveillance and censorship operations on social media.” Their rhetoric echoed Trump’s own history of election denialism, which involved false claims of rigged voting machines and mass voter fraud and culminated in Trump supporters’ January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

With conservatives pushing to axe CISA’s election security mission, Trump’s election last November virtually guaranteed an end to that program, and employees have been bracing for retaliation against the people who participated in that work.

Bean’s memo indicates that CISA’s internal review will cover every agency position related to election security, as well as performance plans for employees involved in that work; all support services provided to the election community; and all election security guidance and publications. Bean wrote that CISA will describe any steps necessary to “correct any activities identified as past misconduct by the Federal Government related to censorship of protected speech,” including eliminating programs or roles.

After CISA completes its review, the agency will submit a report to the White House addressing how it plans to “deliver a more focused provision of services for elections security activities,” Bean told employees. The report will focus on three goals: streamlining the election security services that CISA offers to state and local governments, ensuring that its activities align with its new “mandate to refocus” on its core mission, and removing “all personnel, contracts, grants, programs, products, services, and activities” that conflict with Trump’s anti-censorship directive or exceed CISA’s authorities.

It is unclear if White House officials or DHS Secretary Kristi Noem directly ordered Bean to launch the election security investigation or if she independently determined that Trump’s executive order necessitated it. The January 20 directive does instruct the attorney general to work with other agency leaders to investigate Biden-administration activities that are “inconsistent” with Trump’s vow to end online censorship, but it makes no mention of activities prior to Biden’s term, including CISA’s 2020 election work.
