Why nobody is writing a crossover story between batfam rebirth and pre-new 52? :c (sorry for my bad english...)

Thanks for your ask, Anon.

I think a lot of it comes down to many people not being familiar enough with / interested enough in both. I mean, Flashpoint pretty much ended the Post Crisis universe and started a completely new one, which means many people lost their favorite characters who either no longer exist in New 52/Rebirth or who were changed significantly, to the point where they are almost unrecognizable (Roy Harper is a good example for this). Many people... did not like that, to put it mildly and most Post Crisis readers I’ve ever talked to stayed well away from New 52. Some of them have come circling back around into fandom with Rebirth, but that also means they missed out on five years of continuity and canon events.

Likewise, I’m pretty sure there are many readers in New 52 / Rebirth who know next to nothing about Post Crisis continuity and its characters. That’s almost thirty years of continuity, so even just trying to understand the major events and how they affected your favorite characters can take a long, looooooong time. A good example is how few Jason fans from New 52/Rebirth actually seem to be aware of his characterization from his Robin days in early Post Crisis.

Last but not least, while they are technically two separate universes and were supposed to be treated as such, DC were bloody cowards when it came to actually committing to keeping the two separate, and so a lot of Post Crisis stuff is already implied to have happened in the New 52 / Rebirth, but you never really know unless they specifically point it out on page? For a detailed examination of this problem, I recommend Linkara’s autopsy of the New 52.

Just to give you an example, in Red Hood and the Outlaws Vol 1, there is a scene where Jason asks why Tim is so nice to him, because “I wasn’t always the nicest guy to you”. So that means these two have some history, but what is this history? We never saw it in New 52, so we must assume it’s from post Crisis, but which of Tim & Jason’s interactions in Post Crisis are canon in New 52 / Rebirth now?

The part where Jason and Tim met for the first time, Jason beat the crap out of Tim, and then wrote “Jason Todd was here” all over the walls of the Titans Tower in Tim’s blood?

The part where Tim and Dick used the Titans to gang up on Jason over a murder he didn’t commit and laughed while kicking him in the crotch?

The part where Jason encouraged a gang war using children for canon fodder?

The part where Tim broke him out of jail and let him watch Bruce’s last will, while thinking to himself that he’s already regretting it? For that matter, is Batman RIP still canon in New 52/Rebirth?

The part where Jason nearly killed Tim in the garbage fire that was Battle For The Cowl?

Like... which of those events are canon? And if they are, how did New 52/Rebirth Jason get from THERE to HERE, which are points that might as well be in two different dimensions? Where in the Post Crisis timeline do you intersect? During Battle For The Cowl? Before? After? During Redheaded Emo Stepchild Jason? In the mysterious period between that and Convergence where Bruce was suddenly mostly ok with him?

We are talking about two different universes intersecting here and there are so - many - things to consider... Honestly, one of the reasons why I will not write a Arkham verse / Post Crisis crossover is because it is just so much work... It would require an understanding of what the Post Crisis universe was and how it worked that is, imo, too deep for me to achieve in the limited amount of research I do in order to understand the characters I need to understand for my few Post Crisis fics. Every time I have to write Post Crisis Bruce, Dick, Tim, Barb, Damian or Stephanie, I am walking on egg shells because I barely know these characters. I know even less about their New 52/Rebirth counterparts.

So, yeah... crossing over two massive universes with years of continuity behind them is a very, very daunting, time-consuming, and energy-zapping task if you want to do it right (aka not just “wing it”, read maybe a dozen comics of each and then fill the rest in with wiki knowledge and fanon characterization from Tumblr). If anyone is ever brave enough to attempt that, more power to them, but I fully understand why most people don’t.

New 52 and Rebirth

I don’t know about you guys or the DC comics fandom as whole, but I noticed from the get go that DC wasn’t united and committed to the The New 52. I say this mainly due to the fact that I noticed different writers wrote the relationships between the characters (Mainly SM/WW) jarringly different. For example in there was a point in the justice league comics that had superman and wonder woman basically broken up and wonder woman even almost kissed Steve Trevor. despite the fact that at the same time in the action comics, superman/ wonder woman comics etc, they were simply going through a rough patch in their relationship (which happens in every normal relationship)

Basically, what I’m saying is if DC was committed and united from the get go and the writes communicated and agreed on the characters personalities and relationships. Rebirth may not have happened and if it did happen it would have been something different. may be a side line of comics, for the older fans, that aren’t canon but else world type stories continuing or just telling random adventures of the pre-new52 heroes that we all know and love.

Just a added note:

I head canon that new-52 wonder woman actually left on a mission to find New-52 superman based on information given to by a anonymous source, cause he and the rest of the new-52 heroes were actually replaced by the pre new-52 heroes abut the transition wasn’t perfect and personalities and memories got mixed and confused.

I’m not reading rebirth, it’s too messy and the things that are happen and things that hear that are happen and straight up INSANE. its all nostalgia and hype this wont last long.

It’s fine. We encourage people to share their thoughts. We fully agree. In hindsight, it is clear they sabotaged the new 52. For what? Nostalgia? Now we get there are elements fans loved of the old verse but crapping on a whole rebooted history of 5 years is not the way to do it. Not all long time fans wanted to see Superman with Lois again. Many were ready for  something new. Many newer fans loved the new 52 Superman and Wonder Woman. Action Comics by Morrison and Pak,  Azzarello’s Wonder Woman, Soule’s Superman/Wonder Woman, John’s Justice League, Snyder and Capullo’s Batman, Aquaman, Green Lantern etc all had really good stories. Go back and re-read the stuff and you will see there was a lot of hope, love and legacy in the new 52 and creativity. It wasn’t the bland lather, rinse, repeat.  Rebirth is really lazy and trying to cheat/contrive its way in instead of earning its way. 

There is a way of doing it if DC wanted Superman and Lois to have a son in a verse. The multiverse is out there.  Use it. The same way there is Earth 2, Bombshells, Injustice, Batman Beyond, etc do another title. Hell give Rebirth Superman the flag ship title and new 52 Superman Action Comics. New 52 is way closer to his Golden Age counterpart any way. 

They kill a younger Superman for no good reason other than he was not married to Lois, he felt a little too much of an outsider, and was dating a foreigner. Guess new 52 didn’t represent the american way enough for writers like Jurgens. Then seems they trying now to claim this older one could be him. The older one is more concerned about himself and his family than true beneficence and empathy for the world. Why else would he sit on his butt for 10 years to play house? He could never be my new 52 Superman who was here to make the world safe for EVERYONE because he wanted a fair and safe world for all. Not just doing it for his wife and kid as Rebirth is. New 52 Wonder Woman was completely wiped out as a lie in order to pimp Rucka’s version. The woman has now been thrown in what seems to be the most backward mental facility by a simpering, vanilla Steve Trevor for no good reason other than he needs to seem to be indispensable. While other heroes in other titles are working stuff out and leading teams Rebirth Wonder Woman is either being a vapid Disney Princess in Year One or deluded and sad in the present time.  

And the dragging in the Watchmen to try to blame them for the screwed up timeline? Why? Alan Moore, dude, we’re so sorry. But your story will outlast this silliness. 

This is like me watching 5 years of my favorite show, getting invested only to have new writers come in and say nothing was true. DC really needs to examine how it manages its line. DC want to appeal to all demographics or just the aging ones? We would assume as a business it would be the latter.  You don’t insult the people who supported you for the last 5 years. They actually imply we are fake fans because we liked a product they gave us. ????

They need to try to be diverse and inclusive and updated. Why should I want to read the same thing I read 10/20 years ago? Seriously. Move on with the times, DC. Get some younger or more diverse blood. Writers have to try to be consistent because discerning readers notice narrative poop.  You don’t drag titles into unnecessary crossovers. This is what dragged the Superman/Wonder Woman title down. You give a title to someone who cares for the concept. Peter J Tomasi, god knows what he was trying to do with all the forced,  out of character bs but seems like he came to destroy than build. 

The good news…well not for DC…but to vindicate the new 52…it seems that we are finally getting an update on how well Rebirth was received and despite all the hype and PR, it seems it was not quite the success as DC makes it out to be. 

We are just over half a year in and it seems the numbers are already dropping. The large numbers they showed when Rebirth launched were, in fact, not the real sales numbers because of returnability. Also don’t forget DC shipped twice in one month and offered lowered prices to get their old veterans back and hopefully new readers. Retailers ordered high and  as expected what was not sold would be returned with a refund. DC prob did not expect this much to be returned.

They apparently have lost revenue hence the price hike. So this “hit” was actually like the crappy “Convergence”…ie not a hit. 

Comic Beat does an analysis and basically Rebirth is no different to  pre new 52 or new 52 sales. In fact, some books are no better off or worse. Bear in mind the new 52 lasted 5 years and DC sabotaged it for Rebirth claiming it was bringing back love and hope and legacy and making comics great again. Great for one demo who want to read what they read for decades. Not everyone and clearly not many new fans since the numbers are not greater.

So basically Rebirth is not as successful as the new 52 was. Tea, anyone?

Bottom line, in all this is, DC needs to give its customers a good product and that means better writing. They will try to do crossovers soon and try to hype things up like giving Rebirth Superman a “new” old uniform and even try to steal new 52 Superman’s history. What is so new? A tweak to a belt? And don’t insult us by saying this dude was new 52 Superman all along.  For those who like cohesive and consistent writing and a story to matter don’t give your hard earned money to a company that treats its readers as if we are amnesiacs or idiots. 

Oh and we love your head canon. It makes more sense than DC these days.

mcu compliant: a necessary weasel. mostly follows the MCU plot (ie, ego is peter’s father, her and korath were unrelated, she has made up with nebula). her important growth moments with adam warlock instead have mantis taking his place (ie, the training and the healing of her memories). what I won’t take from the MCU: she’s not attracted to peter, she’s still very much emotionally distant/bitter even with her friends, and it would take considerably more than two random ravagers holding her arms to overpower her. (i’m bitter.)

telltale based: follows the plot of the telltale guardians game, with preference to the ‘befriend nebula’ and ‘destroy the forge’ paths. killing thanos has not soothed her soul, even if making up with her sister helped. she’s still an incredibly unstable person, and her shutting out any of mantis’ attempts at therapy isn’t helping that. any divergences will be noted as they appear.

multiverse: for any other canon marvel timelines, including 616. follows earth-12041 as her backstory, but she’s aware that it isn’t necessarily how things happened in this universe, no matter how disorienting that can be.

nova verse: some unspecified break between her and the guardians, likely due to differing morals, led her to instead join with the nova corps. considering her extensive combat training, as well as insider info on thanos, she’s very much in special ops; considering she joined to atone for her assassin past, not continue it, this leaves her uneasy at best.

the star-lord: after the unfortunate passing of peter quill, gamora takes on the leadership role of the guardians, even taking on the alias ‘star-lord’. as much as she tries, though, she doubts her leadership abilities, and how well she can keep the team together. having a piece of quill left in his helmet (now her helmet) helps. note: while somewhat inspired by the comic with a similar event, this is not that verse, rather being a similarly-themed au.

marvel vs capcom: follows the plot of infinite’s story mode. she’s one of the last few survivors of the convergence (not being on earth at the time may have helped), and reluctantly helping the other surviving heroes, despite being forced to work alongside her monster of a father.

star wars: mirialan by blood, assassin by training. gamora was kidnapped at a young age by a member of the black sun, molded into the perfect stealth assassin for their type of dirty work. after seeing all the pain she was inflicting, she left the black sun, and joined up with the rebellion, becoming one of many under the codename ‘fulcrum’.

Nera approaches Elvira and gently hugs her, sighing softly as she tries to relax. The paranoid feeling still hadn't gone away, but it eased a little when she was in Elvira's presence.

"I feel like I don't say this enough anymore, but... thank you. For everything you've done for both me and Gale." Tears seem to well up in her eyes for a moment. "....Mom."

Elvira's gaze softened as Nera hugged her, a smile on her face as she gladly hugged the woman whom she considered her daughter back, petting her little comfortingly.

"There is truly no need to thank me, dear. I am simply overjoyed that I have been able to provide you both with a good life. I will always be here for both of you, no matter what."

And she meant that. Given her immortality, while she would indeed have to watch Nera and Gale die, she would also be able to be there with them for the entirety of their lives. And the latter fact was what mattered to her, that she could be there for them until their last breath.

The purple haired witch was unfazed by the actions the man had taken, a grin still present on her face as once he’d begun to speak it allowed the witch to tell that he had gone behind her and for her to turn to him rather quickly.

“Interesting little trick, but ‘fraid I’m not particularly that impressed. My people can do things like that and more far beyond your wildest imagination. I could give you a demonstration; however...I don’t know if you would find it particularly enjoyable.”

She was completely and utterly fearless; some could perceive it as foolish, but others who knew her capabilities would probably know she wasn’t being an idiot; she knew when she was outmatched, which she could she was not by any means outmatched in this potential battle. So instead, she chose to mess around with the man a bit, clearly backhandedly threatening him as she even winked to just make it more irritating.
