Not only is there no large public criticism of this reality, there seems to be no spoken awareness of it at all. I’m sure most people know that Barbie is a brand, and most people are smart enough to know this and enjoy the film without immediately driving to Target to buy a new Barbie doll. After all, advertising is everywhere, and in our media landscape of dubiously disclosed User Generated Content and advertorials, at least Barbie is transparently related to its creator. But to passively accept this reality is to celebrate not women or icons or auteurs, but corporations and the idea of advertising itself. Public discourse around Barbie does not re-contextualize the toy or the brand, but in fact serves the actual, higher purpose of Barbie™: to teach us to love branding, marketing, and being consumers.

I know it seems like striking on social media might not do enough, but as someone who has been outright obsessively using the internet since I was a child to the point that it is literally woven in my soul, been active and involved in online activism for about five years, and been using social media as marketing for about the same amount of time, I can confidently say that
THIS FUCKING WORKS!!
People base their entire businesses on their success on social media. They look at trending topics on twitter and don't see bite sized chunks of culture distilled to its finest and worst moments, they see market data! They don't see you as a single human being, they see you as a data point among thousands run through a probably AI assisted system that's prone to fucking up, that determines everything they're going to do.
How they're going to advertise, who they target it with it, what the general public wants. Every single major corporation uses data from social media websites to do this. Every. Single. One. Social media is a lot of things, and one of those things is a tool for business and politics. We know for a fact that social media politics bleeds out into the real world very fucking quickly.
Even if you can't strike financially, even if you have to go to work or school to survive, striking on social media is one of the best things you can do. Even if it's quiet. People are going to notice when thousands upon thousands of users across various sites go completely dark, and even more when some of them start getting real fucking loud about this. The US Capitalist Infused Government loves sweeping war crimes under the rug once they think the general public has forgotten about their atrocities and fallen into complacency. This system has been doing this for literal centuries.
Social media is just the newest and most expansive form we as a species have developed in the ongoing invention of ways to express our thoughts about things. It's the weirdest one, that's for sure, but executives pay attention to it. They don't often seek to understand it beyond a very basic level, because as I said, they view us as numbers on a screen, not as multifaceted incredibly and deeply fucked human beings. They do not seek to understand us on a personal level unless they think the cost of it won't outweigh the potential profit.
Pattern recognition is the tool of the moment. Machine Learning. Gathering endless amounts of data so we can replicate human existence through machines. You may think that social media strikes are ineffective because social media is just on the internet and it's "not real", but it is real! You are really doing stuff! You are contributing! Even if you're just lurking! Basic amounts of engagement can make a huge impact in a busted algorithm. Maybe you're not someone who would ever be drafted into an actual war-zone due to physical or mental health conditions, but you are probably a part of a key demographic of people that businesses are absolutely hungry for.
The budding adult has always been the target of greedy capitalists basically since this system was established and continued to get worse over time. The stage of your life when you are in the age range of 18-25 is an incredibly important transitional period, followed by a transitional period every six months until you lose sense of what six months even is because you haven't been happy in eight, and if you're in the 18-25 range currently, you got extra fucked by the pandemic. The world is in a turbulent stage and we are at the center of all of it and have been since 2001. Every single social media marketing expert will tell you the 18-25 demographic of social media users is a target demographic, because they are the most prone to extremes due to a life chock full of them.
We have to remember to be human, but we have to also know how to speak their language. They just see us as numbers? Let's show them some fucking numbers. Make posts about Gaza trend on every platform you have your hands on. Even if it's just liking posts, that gives them a slight boost in the algorithm. Commenting on posts is especially important on sites like Twitter and Instagram. But across every site the most important thing to do is reblog/retweet/share/send/copy link, whatever it is for that site, it is the biggest thing that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE looks at.
From a humble artist to a head of marketing at a billion dollar corporation about to have a meeting with a barely over 21 intern about how they need to run the twitter account, to said intern bumbling their way through adulthood with a job they only feel they're good at because they've been using social media since Skype was invented. We need to be loud, we need to make sure this can't be ignored, we can't sweep this under the rug. Mass media, especially coming out of the West, has been trying to censor, de-sanitize, and keep this issue quiet.
DO NOT LET YOURSELF BE SILENCED
There are tens of thousands of DEAD CHILDREN who have been BOMBED while in CIVILIAN AREAS and that is a FUCKING WAR CRIME.
THIS IS A GENOCIDE
Say that as many times as you can. Do not let it be ignored. A silent populous is a complacent one. Use your voice, even as small as it may seem. Make noise. Be loud. Be annoying. Don't let this be ignored. Talk about it everywhere you go. Do not let this be ignored.
Sometimes even we get disconnected from the real people around us. We base our sense of worth as a person based on the numbers going up or down but instead of developing a gambling addiction we just got angry about it but still fall into it because of cultural conditioning. But even if you only have let's say, completely random example, 70 followers. And only a small percent of them will see your post. Let's say maybe 20 on average, 30 on a good day, and even higher based on the machinations of fate. That's still 20 people who took time out of their day to read something you wrote, process something you created, share a part of your experience of living.
And likely they felt compelled to share it too, therefore increasing the spread of people who feel your influence. 20 people may not seem like a lot, but that has a major impact. Now imagine posts into the hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands and even millions. Those aren't just numbers. Each and every single one of those is just another person who might have reblogged a post because someone they like shared it, or because they wanted to spread its message, and that simple act causes a single post to have massive waves of effects from simple ripples.
Don't let yourself be discouraged. Don't think your voice or your impact "isn't enough to matter." Everything counts.
Don't let this be ignored. Don't become complacent. Know that every little thing counts, and to do every little thing you can.

Where are all the Audio Fiction Fandoms?
To be clear, this isn't me complaining, and I know, there are plenty of fandoms for audio fiction podcasts and the like.
But I have always found it weird how few shows get the big, self-sustaining kinds of fandoms, the ones where there's always at least a little trickle of fanfic and fanart. So weird, in fact, that I've been thinking about it on and off for the last 5-6 years, and I have a few theories I'd like to share with y'all as to why, and to see if I can't get some feedback from the audio fiction fans on Tumblr.
Theory 1: Audience Size
The first theory is mostly about demographics - fundamentally, a fandom has to be large enough to sustain itself, and only a certain number of audience members are going to become the kind of fans who make fan works, so ultimately, an audio fiction show needs to get popular enough before fan works start appearing.
There's plenty of support for this theory, of course - Welcome to Night Vale, Wolf 359, The Adventure Zone and The Magnus Archives are titans in the fiction podcast space, and indeed they have big fandoms. But, with that said, there's plenty of other podcasts that are just as big that don't have fandoms, so this can't explain it all.
Theory 2: Audience Distance
This one is similar to the first, but subtly different. A few creators in the space I've talked to have noted that they'd never make fan works of their friend's shows - that feels weird, like deliberately treading on their friend's work. They don't have this feeling when playing in big fandoms, or fandoms where they don't know the creator. This implies to me that fans need a certain level of distance from creators in order to feel comfortable playing with that fictional space. While this is less the case now with the fall of Twitter, a lot of shows, for better or worse, used social media as the primary pillar of their marketing, as well as using Patreons with special access as part of their monetization strategies.
In short, it's never been easier to get close to the creators of your favourite shows, and for smaller shows, the most exuberant fans - the kinds who might make fan works - are also the kinds of fans who will take those opportunities to get closer to the creators. In short, there just might not enough social distance for fans to be comfortable creating works, not at least until the audience grows sufficiently that a creator simply cannot be that close with their entire audience.
This theory I'm not so sure about these days - this one is probably a lot more dependent on the generation of fandom you belong to. Older generations of fandom are more likely to have this queasiness around creator closeness, because they were creating in a time where fandom was a shadow realm, desperately hidden from The Powers That Be, and "No Copyright Infringement Intended" was carved into fan works as an eldritch attempt at legal protection.
Theory 3: Audience Age
To be clear - there are fans of all ages out there. But it is clear to me that fandom trends young, and part of that is just the time needed to participate in fan culture - creating and consuming takes a lot of time, time that tends gets scarcer and scarcer as you get older (there are obvious exceptions of course - stay-at-home mothers have consistently been a major force in fandoms!). It's possible that audio fiction fans just tend to trend older, and thus don't have the time available to create and consume fan works.
Honestly, I'm not sure how relevant this one is - Audio fiction is becoming more popular with younger audiences and slowly shedding the "old fuddy-duddyness" that surrounded it when I was first getting into the space. And, ya know, there are audio fiction fandoms out there, so obviously either the youth aspect of fandom isn't a thing, or it is, but audio fiction audiences are still trending young anyway.
Theory 4: We're getting what we need!
A lot of academic discourse often focuses on the idea that fandoms create for a reason - and that reason is often to focus on parts of a fiction that the original text, for whatever reason, doesn't. The most obvious form of this is the many, many, many examples of ships and erotic fanfiction. You, as a fan, watch a show, see something between two characters, and get frustrated that the show isn't giving you more of that, won't make what is clearly obvious to you, explicit. So, you consume and/or create fan works that help relieve that tension instead.
Or, in shows where the focus is primarily on plot advancement or action, you feel a desire to get to know the characters better - you see the stirrings of these characters, you want to know them better, but the show just isn't the type of show to give you that slow, character-heavy scene/episode that you know would give you exactly what you need, so, again, you go consume and/or create fan works to fix that.
It's very possible that a lot of audio fiction is already built to give these sorts of fan audiences what they want. There's already romantic relationships, characters are openly queer, the nature of the audio medium means that character-heavy scenes are something that the medium directs creators towards, so there's already a lot of character engagement. So, for many fandoms, there just isn't much need to create fan works - there's no tension between what the show is and what it could be.
Theory 5: We can make our own at home!
One interesting theory is that one reason that people make fandom is because, fundamentally, the creators understand that they're not going to be making a film, or a TV show, or a book. They have creative urges, and they're not in a situation in life where they're likely to overcome the enormous barriers to entry in mainstream media, so, in combination with the stuff in theory 4, they play in other people's worlds instead. They know that there's already an audience who will consume their work (they're part of that fan community, after all!), so they can get that validation of creation without needing to create their own TV show or film or book, etc.
Podcasts, however, are different. Now, it's not true to say that podcasts have low barriers to entry - to create a podcast, there's a lot of skills you either need to learn yourself, or find collaborators with those skills. But, those barriers to entry are much lower than visual media. At the very least, audio production is significantly cheaper and less complicated for an equivalent runtime.
Better, podcasts have absurdly low barriers to publication - There are no gatekeepers to satisfy, no distributors you have to convince. Once your thing is made, pretty much no one can stop you from distributing that work. You don't even really need to pay for a podcast host - there's a few free podcast hosts now. So, once you've done the work, pretty much nothing stops you from publishing said work.
So... If you're a creative fan, who loved a show but thinks you can do better? Well, you can! You don't need to play in other people's spaces, you can be inspired by the podcasts you listen to to create your own original work, in the same medium and genre.

With everything that's been coming out lately about the state of Rooster Teeth and how they have treated their workers, I think it's important to really look at the dynamic between creators and higher-ups in media companies in general.
The workers, the people to are actually making these productions, are often there because they want to make a career out of what they are passionate about. They're creatives, artists, technicians, performers. They're motivated by the desire to collaborate and create art.
The problem is, in a free market capitalist society, for all of that creative work to be worthwhile for these workers, they need to be paid for it. They can't be the creatives they want to be if they can't make it a career. They have bills to pay, they need to eat, they need to go to the doctor and the dentist, etc. And productions of such size as, say, RWBY, need a whole lot of funding.
That's where companies like Rooster Teeth come in, and that's where the problem lies.
Because these workers are so passionate, so motivated to create and be part of big projects like RWBY, media companies know they are ripe for the exploiting. Sure these companies will pay them, but not enough. Sure they'll fund their creative projects, but they'll put excessive work requirements on the workers to try to ensure the project is as financially successful as possible. They'll turn a blind eye to the issues with the culture and dynamic between workers and their supervisors in order to lighten their own workload and responsibility, while placing more and more of exactly that upon those same mistreated workers.
And it's inescapable. I don't have the first-hand knowledge to make this claim for certain, but this is likely how it is as every major media company. Just seeing the controversy surrounding The Owl House, how the passionate people behind that show had their aspirations curtailed by media mega-corporation Disney. How the products of countless creative workers were just dumped by Warner Bros. Discovery for whatever money reasons.
The thing is, really the only way creative workers can make high-budget projects is via companies like this. Beloved franchises like RWBY, The Owl House (and everything Disney releases, tbf), could not exist without the backing of these media companies. It's inescapable.
Nothing will change until more eyes are on these controversies and the culture within media companies like RT, and nothing will change unless we get behind the creatives, the performers, the workers who want to create. The people who work to make your favorite shows, games, films, need more support. These workers need heavily supported unions, these media companies need reform, and us, the fans, need to pay attention.
I love RWBY, I love The Owl House, I love playing Splatoon on my Nintendo Switch. Sure, none of these things would exist without all the money the companies that published those projects put into them. And none of these things would exist if the workers behind them didn't have the love and passion they do for their craft. In the kind of economic system we live under, there's really no changing the fact that both workers with talent, and companies with funding are each required to make things like this. The thing that does need to change is how those companies treat those workers.

Abstract
Observable real-time injuries at the cellular level in recipients of the “safe and effective” COVID-19 injectables are documented here for the first time with the presentation of a comprehensive description and analysis of observed phenomena.
The global administration of these often-mandated products from late 2020 triggered a plethora of independent research studies of the modified RNA injectable gene therapies, most notably those manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna.
Analyses reported here consist of precise laboratory “bench science” aiming to understand why serious debilitating, prolonged injuries (and many deaths) occurred increasingly without any measurable protective effect from the aggressively, marketed products. The contents of COVID-19 injectables were examined under a stereomicroscope at up to 400X magnification. Carefully preserved specimens were cultured in a range of distinct media to observe immediate and long-term cause-and-effect relationships between the injectables and living cells under carefully controlled conditions.
From such research, reasonable inferences can be drawn about observed injuries worldwide that have occurred since the injectables were pressed upon billions of individuals. In addition to cellular toxicity, our findings reveal numerous — on the order of 3~4 x 106 per milliliter of the injectable — visible artificial self-assembling entities ranging from about 1 to 100 µm, or greater, of many different shapes. There were animated worm-like entities, discs, chains, spirals, tubes, right-angle structures containing other artificial entities within them, and so forth. All these are exceedingly beyond any expected and acceptable levels of contamination of the COVID-19 injectables, and incubation studies revealed the progressive self-assembly of many artifactual structures.
As time progressed during incubation, simple one- and two-dimensional structures over two or three weeks became more complex in shape and size developing into stereoscopically visible entities in three-dimensions. They resembled carbon nanotube filaments, ribbons, and tapes, some appearing as transparent, thin, flat membranes, and others as three-dimensional spirals, and beaded chains. Some of these seemed to appear and then disappear over time.
Our observations suggest the presence of some kind of nanotechnology in the COVID-19 injectables.

Clearly, this team is heading in a new direction, and I’m not mad at it. Times change, and the Titans are adapting. Pairing Ridley with Hopkins seems almost unfair, and when you add a solid receiver like Boyd along with Treylon Burks, who’s ready to take the next step, the wide receiver room is no longer among the league’s worst. All of this has been achieved without sacrificing the run game. Both Pollard and Spears can run the ball the way Callahan wants it done, and I believe they’ll prove their worth this season.
On the defensive side, the moves made almost brought tears of joy. Drafting T’Vondre Sweat, who is unbelievably fast and agile for his size, was a masterstroke. Sweat is a certified run-stopper and will also affect the passer, drawing double-teams a solid percentage of the time. Pairing him with Jeffery Simmons, who also requires double-teams, will force opposing offensive lines into some tough decisions. Adding a talented, budding linebacker like Kenneth Murray to an already physical Arden Key will secure the middle of the field and boost the pass rush.
Then there’s the secondary, which has been reinvigorated with the additions of Sneed, Awuzie, Adams, and Diggs, alongside preexisting talent like Elijah Molden and Roger McCreary. This group has the potential to lock down a lot of yardage this year. Bottom line: the Titans’ defense has improved significantly.
Before I forget, let’s talk about the offensive line. With the addition of first-round pick JC Latham and the continued development of Peter Skoronski under new offensive line coach Bill Callahan, this unit should be miles ahead of where it was last year. Improved blocking, especially from the right side of the line, has been a highlight of the preseason, addressing one of the major issues from last year.
B: Coaching Change/Culture Shift
Please note, I am not a Mike Vrabel hater. I appreciate everything he’s done for this franchise—instilling a culture of toughness and grit, leading the team to an AFC Championship run, and managing an injury-riddled roster. However, I acknowledge that change was needed. The league is evolving, and the Titans were at risk of being left behind.
Brian Callahan and his staff bring a fresh perspective, new energy, and a balanced approach to Nashville. Players are reportedly thrilled with new defensive coordinator Denard Wilson and offensive line coach Bill Callahan. The emphasis on physicality and toughness remains, but there’s also a focus on balance, which I believe will help the Titans adapt and thrive in this new era.
C: Development of Will Levis
One crucial factor for the team’s success is the continued development of second-year quarterback Will Levis. Levis showed a lot of promise last year, stepping in for the injured Ryan Tannehill and pushing the ball downfield with confidence. He clearly won the team over, and his growth will drive this team as far as it can go. With a strong supporting cast around him and improved protection, Levis has the tools to succeed.
One concern is Levis taking unnecessary hits. We get it—you’re tough. But we’d also like you to have a long, successful career. All in all, I believe he’s ready to take the next step.
Best Case Scenario:
In the best-case scenario, the offensive line gels quickly, Levis makes sound decisions, and the defensive line dominates early by stopping the run and pressuring the passer. If everything clicks, a 10-win season and a playoff berth are within reach.
Worst Case Scenario:
On the flip side, if the offensive line takes most of the regular season to figure things out, if Levis regresses, if the run game falters, and if the defense spends too much time on the field, the team could be exposed. An undisciplined, sloppy defense could result in a 6-7 win season, or worse, and no playoffs. However, I highly doubt that happens, given the personalities and talent on this team.
The Tennessee Titans are primed to surprise many this upcoming season. There’s a fresh energy, new vibes, and a modern approach in Nashville. The Titans are changing with the times, and as a fan, I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come.

i really dislike the “theory” that the size of a fandom is proportional to media being Not That Good, Actually. i think said theory was made mostly as a response to the superwholock era, which is not at all where tumblr is today, but also... i know people think it’s like a subconscious thing, but what “good media” stretches its world so thin as to allow no imagination?
i think some media doesn't lend itself to fandom for a lot of reasons. some of that is accessibility and marketability in a wider cultural space, which may indeed not be what the media is going for... and sure, you can make a broad argument about "lowest common denominator" if you're feeling spicy. some media is easier to understand and appreciate broadly. but i don't think that inherently makes it "lesser." everything is subjective. and that's what this "analysis" doesn't allow.
i really dislike the idea that some media is just "too objectively good" for fandom. again, i know it's meant to be subconscious, but never have i ever seen something and been like "wow, this is so perfect i'm never think about it again." that's just never been how i think. being inspired by media to create fanworks and AU is not inherently a flaw, because no piece of media can actually be "everything."
what i think is definitely true is that small fandoms naturally attract less discourse. and so, you might not get that critical examination thrown in your face all the time and think the media is better than it actually is. (not to say that discourse is always healthy of course)
