This is actually the last straw for me bc one of my fav mutuals on there and like one of the few ppl I got close to when i started using Tumblr for that fandom, I went thru their blog today and turns out they're a fucking proshipper this whole time and I never knew, they reblogged posts that defend proshippers. I'm so done man, I want to expand my art blog and talk to people but it makes me sick that my art for this fandom could be consumed by people who look at actual incest and think fiction doesn't affect reality when they already dumbed down an incredibly abusive dynamic to uwu twincest. It feels so gross, like I end up feeling like I'm somehow supporting this by staying in the fandom and making art.

I'm back on my thinking about Doctor Who bullshit and like,

why do people unironically like and/or enjoy the Chibnall seasons?

I understand that people who view tv uncritically might enjoy it. It's hard to understand because I would think even those people would struggle not to be bored by most Chibnall episodes but I concede that it's possible.

The part that really drives me to distraction is how people who really care about Doctor Who can unironically like, and even love, this era of the show.

Why is that a thing that people do? I've been trying to come up with explanations but I don't know if they make any sense.

Because there's an actor in it that you think is incredibly skilled, feel personally invested in, or just generally really like.

Because there are more women and people of color in the show now than before, a more international focus, and more poc in prominent roles behind the scenes

Because you're a huge fan of Doctor Who in general and you go into it with a predisposition to forgive flaws and focus on the good. If you let anything ruin your enjoyment of the era then you've lost the chance to experience new Doctor Who for several years.

Because you gave up on Doctor Who at some point during Moffat's run due to his problems with plot and/or misogyny. You came back to find a female Doctor with a different showrunner and feel personally invested in the new era being just as good as, or better, than the preceding one (because you feel so much animosity towards the preceding one).

Because you feel that there's something that Doctor Who did terribly prior to Chibnall that has now been resolved, and this makes you appreciate the entire era (although I don't know what that would be).

Because you ship the Doctor and Yaz and you've participated in the creation of a fandom with its own fanon surrounding the two of them. You enjoy watching episodes that feature them because you're able to focus on their relationship through this fanon lens. (You're sad and/or annoyed that there aren't enough popular wlw ships so you feel protective and defensive of them and the perceived quality of the episodes in which they appear).

of all things to come out of fandom, dw fans trying to claim the hatred of Jodie that is purely misogynistic (as it’s only there because she’s a woman, it has nothing to do with her as a person, it’s literally the definition of misogyny) in No way influenced opinions on the era is the most dangerously naïve and absurd. 

Even when nmd’s (read: MISOGYNSTS. It’s a synonym here.) deliberately conducted review bombing campaigns to make her episodes tank on polls with the express aim of making it seem like everybody hated the episodes, and so new people who might think about watching it will think twice and not do it bc look how shit the ratings are! And therefore drive the general viewer ratings of her episodes down, making it seem like hiring women is not a viable business choice in the future.

Just because you don’t recognise the existence of a long game, doesn’t mean they didn’t. 

Even when the next dude they hire is a damn White Man you think this is in no way routed in the misogynists deliberately hijacking fan spaces with the express and open intent of getting their precious white men back?

Its funny to me people being like why is Jodie Whittaker bill before David Tennent in the NYCC list… and we can only speculate but in the little online DW fandom David might be seen as ‘The Doctor’ but Jodie Whittaker is actually the more culturally significant Doctor… and I know people will hate why but of course its because she’s a woman… that actually does matter, because in the world we live in it took 55 years for that to happen because misogyny was and is real and so it took that long to get a female incarnation of the Doctor. You might not see it that way but the industry does.

I know some people only want the show to be ‘good’ whatever that means because it’s subjective and personally think it was very good, so supposedly they don’t care if the Doctors a woman, its about the show being ‘good’ but guess what… to the rest of the world the first female Doctor is more important to the broader cultural landscape then David is, he’s just one of many white male Doctors. Jodie being the first Female Doctor on a show with a 55 year history always was and always will be culturally important. 

It also makes her incarnation highly recognisable to the general public, I know, hard for DW online fandom to believe, because they think no one watches the show, because 4 million+ people, what a tiny number,🙄 but the general public may not be invested enough in the DW online fandom to know all the negativity spewed about her and her era but invested enough in pop culture in general to know who and what Doctor Who is. 

I know the haters wanted her career to be over and for her to disappear into the shadows for their personal offence of her daring the play the Doctor but thats just not how it will ever be. She will always be the first female Doctor, it will always be linked to her and it will always have cultural significance. She will always be respected by the general pop culture landscape for her role. 

So maybe thats why she’s billed higher on that NYCC list…maybe not… maybe the names on that list are in no particular order. We’ll probably never know.

However just to note I do feel for Karen Gillan she’s now been in multiple Marvel big blockbuster movies and Doctors still get billed above her, that poor woman having to live constantly in the shadow of the Doctor even when its not her incarnation of the Doctor.

first of all, sja was targeted primarily at kids. not to say adults didn’t watch it but it was on cbbc when I was a child. it was primarily a children’s show as opposed to doctor who, which is a family show and aired on bbc one.

second of all, sarah jane was always sarah jane. there was never any change to her character in that regard. some fanboys were upset about jodie because she was a woman in a role previously only really played by men and too many didn’t like that.

as someone who used to dislike daisy (i got better dw), yeah smoky sucks ass, i always hated him.

To be fair, I think the Erins really put Daisy off on a bad foot when they introduced her. It's really easy to forget that they tried to use her for super cheap, ugly love triangle drama.

Between Cloudtail and Brightheart, no less. What a bad note to start with! Mix in the soft misogyny the series always had and... yeesh. I think a lot of young readers were led to bad conclusions about gender; and it expressed as a lot of hate for Ferncloud, Daisy, and Squilf.

I love all of them now, though. And the fandom has come a long way, I'm glad everyone can appreciate Daisy now for what she's done.

Hopefully now we can all hate Smoky like he deserves though >:)

Genuinely, why are so many wlw artists jumping on the nvfr/fcltte train? I’ve had to unfollow and mute so many ppl in the last week alone. Maybe it’s a little dramatic of me, but a lot of these artists were somewhat of a safe haven within a fandom that’s drowning in misogyny/lesbophobia and now I feel super disconnected again.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an implied familial relationship made so explicit in my life, and yet people don’t see it? There are those who ship it out of (lesbophobic) spite, but there are so many who genuinely think they’re soulmate material. I feel like I’m going a little crazy, but I’m glad there are some here who understand!

thanks for such a big text and for taking the time to write this, dw, i understood you perfectly. and of course, i’ll not attack, because it is written respectfully. my appeal was rather to those who, without arguing their position, immediately and categorically humiliated evan, without considering both sides in their text. i agree with you in some way, if you search somewhere below on my account, i wrote my complaint about the series itself and it seemed incorrect to me to come to the victims’ house, ask their hard stories and just leave. i agree that this part should have been given more attention, and to be honest, the thought “he didn’t say anything about the victims and their families” flashed through my head at the end, it’s true. i was rather infuriated by the fact of the flow of uncontrolled shit that poured out on him, which caused a response in me. it’s just how people get their thoughts across. undoubtedly, forgetting about families and victims is unacceptable. i would say that evan himself is awkward at speeches, not very talkative, and very nervous, but as a ukrainian citizen (which i am) who himself faces death almost every day, this would be a strange excuse - he needed to say more and try to focus on respect and emphasize it. it just upsets me how people throw themselves with fire without controlling their emotions. of course, all people are different, i understand this very well, but evan seems far from the worst person to be so humiliated and even go so far as to cancel him, as i saw it. and it hurts to see such aggressive comments while much tougher people get more understandings

torchwood audio dramas are a bit complicated cause like. theres tbe monthly range which is just standalone stories with different characters set in different points in time. usually one or two characters from the show + some 1-episode characters....... often the show characters are from the team but theres also been audios on bilis or yvonne and theres been audios only with new characters

then theres s5-6-7 which are. the continuation of the show. so jack, gwen, and the new team characters

and theres special releases which are boxsets about different things. theres a series about torchwood one (which is my fave because it has ianto before the Horrors of the battle of canary wharf and i love some ianto backstory), there's one set in the 1950s,....

i haven't listened to everything because there is A Lot so i mostly focus on the ianto ones but ill catch up on everything eventually probably

soemthing really interesting about orr is that their shape-shifting abilities are basically all about being what the people around them want them to be. at first it was just who the people are attracted to but over time its become a lot wider than that, like in an episode i listened to today the city ran out of clean water so obviously EVERYONE wanted water and orr literally became a watrr supply. and it was very bad for them. but yeah since theyre supposed to become what other people want they kinda struggle to like, be themselves instead of following other people's expectations its so interesting.......... i liked seeing them with javk because jack is always trying really hard not to take advantage of their powers even unconsciously while the others don't always pay attention to that. unfortunately jack might nevrr come back to anything doctor who related ever again because john barrowman is a weirdo 😔 but its okay theres loads of other characters. tbh i think part of the reason ianto is back in s7 is because they need characters from the original team to keep people interested lol, theres gwen but with the rampant misogyny of fandom a lot of people hate her. but no one hates ianto because hes perfect (though if he were a woman he would probably have gotten loads of backlash like gwen did lol)
