Cutting off the enormous scores for 2000 CE lets us stretch the vertical axis enough that we can actually see the scores from earlier periods, while shortening the time span lets us stretch the horizontal axis so the changes through time are clearer too.

As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#“an object created and controlled by companies” anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a “tool”#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is “automation” you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always “well i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on you”#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

Do You Know This (non-canon) Autistic Character?
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
He feels like practically autistic culture at this point. Nearly every autistic person I know relates to him and he is one of the first characters people think of when they talk about autistic Star Trek characters. He struggles to relate to others and understand social norms and express his emotions in a way others recognize. He also arguably has intense interests he understands the world through as well.
Any other details:
I am confused by the definition of canonically autistic? I would not consider him to be such really but i do think there is enough evidence textually to warrant a diagnosis/their behavior/traits are referenced as making them markedly different from neurotypical characters but also I would not consider that to count as being canonically autistic? so like do with that what you will?
Mod note: Put him as non canon due to the show not saying it, but will say here you originally listed his as canon.

here is the sheet. it's an excel spreadsheet so it will download to your computer. this is really important for all the people who constantly say "democrats and republicans are the same." if they're not willing to do the work to either prove or disprove that notion, they're NOT someone ANYONE should be taking political advice from.

indeed my exact process once every 8 months or so
#I just thought today of a new way to format a 'profile' (like the descriptions of self that people use on friend meeting#apps and stuff) and how to organize the sections so that it seems such and such a way and oh what if there's links which click off#into branching paths so it's very acessible and there are two different forms depending on so on and so forth#and i was like 'um.. wow. amazing idea. this will be soooo aweseome and will definitely work' but then .. you know...self reflection#lol.. is this just like the millions of other iterations of a similar thing? No.. This Is Different ... Surely...#Though if I had a millionaire friend and a few people who do the type of coding you use for web design stuff and etc..#I could create the most elaborate detailed and amazing platonic friend seeking (and I guess you could also have 'dating' as an option#since that would draw in more of a crowd) website on the earth.. the new okcupid (back when okcupid didn't suckishly abandon their#whole format in hopes of trying to become just like tinder or whatever and they actually had like tons of info and percentages and#open answer questions and would list personality traits on a profile (like 'this person is more Open To New Expereinces than 65% of#other users' etc.). etc. etc. Oh what a beautiful thing I could craft for the detail freaks of the world.... Alas...#unfortunately we seem to be in an oversimplification era.. everything in short quick bites. everything on a tiny phone screen. etc.#marketing 'Introducing The Most Complicated Data Heavy Social Connection Site In The World' would not sell well I'd imagine gjhgjh#AANYWAY.. also no idea why the representation of me is in a turtle neck. what a bold fashion choice..#In another moment of self reflection.. the fact that in the first tag on this post I felt the need to define the word 'profile' just to be#specific as if people couldn't tell from context.. so clearly someone who finds filling out forms a 'fun afternoon activity' lol#the type of guy who finds psych evaluations and pop quizzes and making chore lists mostly enjoyable (< true)

So, I watched tng and voyager ages ago and loved them, but never got into tos until recently. That being said I've been accidentally kinning spock without ever having seen him in anything for years now.
I wish I was kidding but I've been stealing his whole look and personality, including BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
the bangs
the brows
i wear pointy ears on occasion
people tell me i speak in an odd overly intellectual way irl
i pathologically avoid expressing most feelings to people due to the way i was raised
bisexual
he's basically just my autism personified

thinking about what if data were aromantic. even after he gets the emotion chip put in, he still just doesn’t feel romantic love, and doesn’t understand what other people are feeling when they talk about it. and he’s really upset at first because he feels like after everything he’s been through to get here he still isn’t fully human. there’s still a piece missing. he’s tapped into every work of art humans have ever created and romance seems so ubiquitous that he thinks you can’t be human without it
i’m imagining this as like a b or c plot of an episode. maybe he’s been working with a crew member who turns out to be aromantic and they commiserate about how alienating it can be to hear everyone talk about romance all the time. everyone comes together at the end to help him realize that he feels so many different kinds of love, and no human’s experience with emotions is exactly the same and your humanity doesn’t depend on what emotions you do or don’t feel anyway
i think this would be a good episode. i would enjoy it

Viking 'paganism' was probably never a consistent orthodoxy... and may never have been systematically understood by those who practised it.
I recently found myself sitting outside watching an Appalachian fiddler play with his friend. "All he's got in his head are fiddle tunes," his wife told me proudly, amid stories of how he awed students at a classical conservatory. I thought about how very many songs he must know, and how you keep them straight - if someone came to you and asked you to sing every song you know, where do you start? How do you ever know if you're finished?
Anyway I figure not-systematically-understood feels something like that.
(I'm also having thoughts about cultural Christianity as a way for modern Americans to understand what Price is calling a belief system as opposed to a religion - something like religion is not a separate thing you do at church, or praying before meals, but just an understood part of every moment of your day such that you don't even notice it's there.)
The 'worship' required by the Norse pantheon was not adoration, or gratitude, or even unreserved approval, and was thus utterly unlike the Christian relationship to the divine. The religion of the Aesir and Vanir demanded only a recognition that they existed as an integral and immutable part of human nature and society, and of the natural world, and that as such they possessed an inherent rightness - perhaps even a kind of beauty. If one wished to avoid disaster, it was necessary to come to terms with the gods, and the terms would be theirs, not those of their followers... a refusal to acknowledge the gods in this way could have dire consequences. It would also involve a contradiction, as such an act would be a denial of the undeniable. The question of 'believing in' the Norse gods was probably irrelevant.
(I note that Price leaves space here for the interpretation of gods not as natural but as human archetypal representations.)
I'm colored a bit by reading The Long Ships here, but I think this is saying people 'believed' in gods the way we 'believe' in gravity. It doesn't matter if you think the theory is correct, it's still there. You can't just jump off a roof and fly because you decided Newton was wrong, any more than you can have a safe sea voyage because Thor does not exist. When Christians come saying their god is stronger, and you can in fact have a safe voyage just by praying to their god, that's fantastic news! Holy cow, these shaved priests are saying they've invented airplanes, what control that gives you over your life!

one of the reasons i enjoy keiji zero so much is that it dares to ask the question of "what if your traumagenic alter had autism"
#keiji zero#tokiya rekihiko#text#i don't think that's what the showrunners were going for though#one of the main themes of the series is to start from zero#as emphasised in the last case of the tv series by the password to the book of law + tokiya specifically being the one to figure it out#so i imagine what they were actually going for is a more childlike character who hasn't re-learned all of his adult inhibitions yet#(saso very aptly calls him ''ossan kodomo'' in one scene and. yea.)#but nouveau tokiya is so ridiculously sensory#always (physically) poking and prodding things in people's houses#and forgetting to use his inside voice when he finds a book he read as a child#his whole life after his accident is hiding (masking) the fact he lost his memory of the last twenty years#and his ability to memorise data is incredible#he glanced at a map for a few seconds and was able to memorise the route perfectly & he even had to correct saso when she went the wrong way#all of this is to say#i think he's intentionally an autism allegory in the same way as jotaro from JJBA but damn if they don't both hit me in those feels#(inb4 the point of the previous tag is to say that jotaro was not an intentionally autistic-coded character)#i'm a little bit sad the specials aren't subtitled because the first one especially is my favourite thing out of the whole series#brilliant showcase of the main characters all around And confirms tokiya's memory loss is basically DID#i can't say how good it is as representation because while i have several friends with DID i don't like to ask invasive questions about it#nonetheless though i find it interesting because he's only able to “swap” by falling into water while under extreme emotional distress#though i think after the first special they realised it sort of undermines the point the tv series left off on#(that it's ok to make a fresh start)#because while tokiya Did try to bring back heisei tokiya a few times during the second special he never succeeded#first special does reinforce the child thing though because vintage tokiya looks at a picture one of his colleagues took on his phone#and comments that he had no idea there was this three-year-old child inside him#(differentiating palaeo and neo tokiya with the names saso uses for him in whatever episode each event takes place in Lmao)

The thing is. Representation in media did change things. I grew up in the 90s and 2000s, where the only place you could see shows or movies with queer people was on Cable television on the gay channel or the sex-allowed channel. There was The L Word, and Queer as Folk, and those weren't on the main channels. On the main channels, shows were still getting told they couldn't show a clearly queer character (Xena, The Next Generation, DS9 had to fight to get the 1 queer kiss, Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to fight to eventually get to show Willow and Tara kiss). Then of course there was the majority of characters being men in TV shows, and characters being white. But I'm going to focus on the queer rep thing because that's what I can for sure say has changed a lot.
By the time we get to 2010s, it was actually NORMAL enough for queer people to be in shows on mainstream channels that I could actually choose to ONLY watch shows with a queer character. And most straight people probably watched at least 1 show with a queer character. And that normalized seeing queer people for them. It made straight people start caring LESS if they saw a queer person on TV. Yes, people still probably wrote into shows and said "you better not show this!" but shows knew it was not going to kill their profits to just show queer people, so they didn't cancel shows over having a queer character or SHOWING some queer person kissing someone. (Showing interracial relationships was also a steady thing like this... Sonic 2 has a black woman and a white man together in a HUGE mainstream movie for kids! Fallout show has a black woman and a white man married as one of the main relationships! There was a time when your show got cancelled if you even tried to show a black person and white person kissing. Representing stuff shifts what society views as 'normal' and tolerates. Show enough interracial couples in media, and the main bulk of society stops caring enough to fight to get something cancelled by avoiding it, stops caring enough about avoiding it to care that it exists and fight it's existence).
We get to now. Now a straight person can watch a show like Interview with the Vampire, or Arcane, and the fact there are queer main characters are NOT something you even need to warn the straight person about. The straight person may seek out those shows ON their own, like them for their own merit as a show (or not like them on that merit), and that's it. No more concern that just including a queer person will drive the average straight person to avoid your show, or that it will be such a high risk the channel will want to prevent the queer character existing. (Except hey for stuff like Disney which... still overwhelmingly seems frightened...) I'm just saying. We came SO far in 30 years. In the beginning shows fought to show whatever little they were able (and most shows avoided showing queer people altogether for fear of the risk). And now it is such a SMALL risk that shows expect the average straight audience member to not care if they see a queer person. That's a huge difference tbh. When I was a teenager I feared just being OUT might expose me to most adults attacking me verbally, or more. Now as a queer adult, I expect most Average straight people to not care about my sexuality or at least not verbally (or physically) attack me for it if I'm just mentioning who I dated once/that I went to pride/that I'm bi. That is a huge difference after years of normalization. Yes, there's still jerks who will attack me, but its such a shift that I don't automatically have to assume every straight person by default will likely attack me - I can actually assume some won't! Nothing changed in their lives, in the past 30 years a lot of them didn't make more queer friends or anything. But they just don't care as much that some person different than them... exists.
We are to the point where a straight person, who is not queer and doesn't know queer people, may actually choose to watch Young Royals or Heartstopper or Red White and Royal Blue JUST because they like teen drama, or romance genre stuff. That's a huge fucking shift from the days when straight people would not even run into queer content unless they specifically got cable, and sought out the very rare channel that showed mostly queer content. There's way more 'stuff for average audiences' now that includes queer people, and more 'stuff for queer people that's also X genre' that average straight audiences actually are willing to check out because they like X genre and seeing queer people is not an immediate reason to avoid the media for them.

thank you for your service, fiskars eight inch non-stick titanium softgrip scissors
you lived, ready-to-hand, in the hone slot of my knife block and together, for the last six years and seventy five days, we have opened bags and boxes, snipped ties and tape, shaped paper and cloth. sometimes though, i asked more of you, we trimmed the woody stems of herbs, we pruned the branches of plants, and as your final task, we cut through the rib cage of a spatchcocking spring chicken. i tried to repair your broken handle, but it was not to be. for now your slot sits empty. you will be missed
