“I’m sorry, could you repeat that?” you ask, not believing what you just heard.

“What’s your Roman Empire?” Jim repeats with a big smile - too big.

“Where is this coming from?”

“Just answer the question!”

“What are we talking about?” Deacon asks as he returns to your side.

“How often do you think about the Roman Empire, Deac?” Street replies.

You drop your head to rest on your hands against the table. Deacon glances toward you, but knows your ‘I’m tired because of the men I work with’ reaction too well.

“Um, occasionally, I guess,” Deacon answers. “And you?”

“Every day,” Jim says dramatically.

“Why are we talking about this?”

Street nudges his foot against yours and sounds far too happy as he declares, “Your turn.”

“You think about the Roman Empire?” Deacon mumbles.

“Girls make their own, Deac,” Jim explains. “I’ll send you some videos later.”

“I’m good; thanks.”

You sit up and shake your head at Street.

“We’re friends, you can tell us,” he reassures.

You shake your head again and lean back in your seat.

“You’re only making me more curious,” Street singsongs.

“I’ll tell you,” you say. “But only you.”

“You heard her,” Street announces. “Hit the road, Deac.”

“Actually,” you interject as Deacon stands. “I don’t trust you anyway. Stay, Deac.”

He sits back down beside you, and you chew the inside of your bottom lip as you consider lying.

“No lies,” Street adds, as if he can read your mind.

“Do you remember a while back when Deacon and Rocker sparred?” you ask quietly.

“Yeah,” Street and Deacon answer together.

You shrug, and realization hits Street first.

“What?!” he yells. “Deac is your Roman Empire?”

“Go away,” you beg, keeping your eyes away from Deacon.

Street raises his hands in surrender, but you hear him yelling for Luca as he disappears around the corner. You drop your head again and groan.

“He didn’t ask what my Roman Empire was,” Deacon murmurs in your ear.

You hum, then sit up quickly at the implication that his answer wasn’t referring to the real Roman Empire.

“What is it?” you inquire shyly.

Deacon smiles just before Hondo calls for him. He leaves you alone to think about him as you wonder if he’s thinking about you, too. He stops in the doorway and looks over his shoulder to say, “You’re not the only one who found their Roman Empire at work.”

“Deac?!” Street screeches yells from down the hall.

A heavy scowl appeared on Detective Chandler Manning’s face, “The bitterness in your tone is hard to miss.”

Sharon snorted derisively, still not taking her eyes off the screens, “After Thanos, governments across the world were lining up to offer the remaining Avengers anything they could possibly want. I guess it was too much effort to ask for my name to be cleared so I could return home. Steve certainly wasn’t going to do that for me.”

“Your reason for betraying her was personal when she had nothing to do with your circumstances?” The other man, Eliot Deacon, the mortician questioned.

“She could have had my name cleared but she chose not to,” Sharon shrugged. Her eyes caught the tiniest flicker of movement on the screens. Before she could open her mouth to point the movement out, Eliot spoke again.

“You’re wrong.” The mortician stated, “She did fight to have your name cleared when you were in hiding.”

That got Sharon’s attention, “She did?”

“We interfered with the process.”

Sharon’s eyes widened and with dread bubbling in her stomach she slowly turned to face the two men, “Why?”

“Because she went into hiding after she tried to clear your name and it was proving difficult to locate her.”

“Whoa, whoa, stop,” you exclaim, raising your other hand to Deacon’s chest. “What are you talking about?”

“You’re upset with me,” Deacon answers, very puppy-like as he pouts.

“No, I’m not. Why do you think I am, David?”

“Because of that!” Deacon says a bit too loud.

“Because?” you press.

“You said my name, my full name. Not Deacon or Deac or a pet name, whatever. I’m sorry.”

“I’m not mad at you,” you promise.

Deacon nods, keeping your hand close and his eyes on you. Luca cheers after beating Street’s high score.

“I bet you could do better, David,” you whisper.

“Deacon, a little help in here?” Hondo calls from the kitchen.

Deacon pats your leg as he stands, walking past you. You see his phone on the couch beside you, and when Hicks’ name appears on the screen, you pick it up and rush to catch up with Deacon.

“David!” you say.

“I’m sorry!” he replies, turning toward you.

The rest of the team stops what they’re doing, silencing you as they watch you.

“You didn’t- I- here,” you stutter before pressing Deacon’s phone into his hands.

He answers, exchanges a few quick words, and then hangs up.

“Sorry, Deac,” you say with a smile.

“That was so unnecessary,” Deacon mumbles, pulling you into a hug. He smiles against your shoulder, and you pat his back.

“What’d you do?” Luca asks. “You broke him! I’ve never seen a man apologize that quickly before.”

“Yelled my name like she wanted a divorce,” Deacon answers, pulling you against his side as he sends you what you’re sure is supposed to be a mean look.

“You’re cute,” you mumble. “Wait, do you want a divorce?”

“Stop talking,” Deacon requests with a smile.

“You better apologize right now. He’s got a SWAT team at his back,” Hondo threatens playfully.

“I’m sorry,” you say, looking into Deacon’s eyes. “David.”

Deacon kisses you to make you stop talking, and his team finally turns away, groaning at the display of affection.

“QUICK, HIDE ME.” deacon grabs his sister by the shoulders, ducks behind her in a futile attempt to hide. there’s an exhibit opening from some eccentric installation artist who builds his pieces from scrapped computer parts. something about it being a social commentary on technology furthering the class divide… deacon barely read the blurb on the brochure. ironically, the place is crawling with well-dressed elite who, collectively, are worth more than all these museum pieces combined; the only divide between these people are the iron gates and spiked fencing that house their immense wealth. and donned in the only suit he owns, a dark grey two-piece that was a hand-me-down from lucien, deacon actually, surprisingly, looks like he belongs here. though what he’s doing hiding behind his five-foot-five sister is a mystery that should soon be solved.
