Grandpa: Come here, nixCraft. me: Yeah, Grandpa? Grandpa: What is this error? What am I supposed to do? Do they expect me to buy a new computer every few years? I'm a pensioner with limited income. me: You don't have to if you use Linux Mint. Grandpa: What is that now? me: Explains everything Grandpa: It is free? It will not steal my data? It will not install stupid games without my permission? I can access Facebook and do shopping and buy or sell stocks? Are you sure it is free and connect to my WiFI? me: Yup. Grandpa: Linux Mint it is, then!

windows/linux rant
unrelated to SMT or anything on my blog currently I guess...
I keep seeing the "prep for windows 11" thing show up on my computer, and it upsets me every time that you have to have a microsoft account to install it.
windows 10 reaches end of support next year~~
I hope by then the computer I"m using will actually let me run linux on it instead of an outdated windows os....
I want to run linux on this machine so bad but whenever I try to install it, it seems to install fine and dandy
and then it won't boot
I've snooped around in the BIOS, disabled the "smart startup" or "secure startup" or whatever else I thought was borking the boot for linux.
but it still won't boot~~~
and sadly i've got games on here that only work on windows anyway.
I'd much rather be able to stay relatively safe online and maintain an OS, than play the games I bought on steam....
something is preventing linux from booting on this machine, it upsets me when I think about it, and it upsets me more when I try to install linux and it goes fine, but then doesn't boot
cause I have to take the time to reinstall windows again.....
why computer? why won't you let linux boot? what do I need to do to you to have linux actually boot? I don't understand...
*confused screaming*
running an ASUS ROG Stryx gaming pc that I bought on impulse years ago. so you'd think linux mint would boot just fine, right??
how do I fix it? if I can fix it? especially if I don't destroy the data on the second hard drive of this thing. I've got stuff I don't want to lose on here, preferably....

Switching to Linux 🐧
Over the past couple years Windows 10 has been giving me progressively more asinine problems to deal with, from desktop issues and bloatware, to automatically installing out of date drivers to replace the ones I've manually installed.
Before you ask, I attempted using Windows 11 when it came out and I refuse to acknowledge its existence after the hell it put me through.
Most recently Windows 10 has seemingly made a point of making ASIO and all audio devices and software I use functionally useless, causing ridiculous amounts of crackling audio. No rollbacks fixed it, no re-installs fixed it, not even Reloading Windows fixed it. The reason for using ASIO is that Windows default audio protocol, WDM, has too much latency for live real-time use. This issue not only makes things like live-streaming basically impossible but it also outright made my Digital Audio Workstation and Video Editing Software incapable of processing audio for longer than a second without hanging. Both Mixcraft and DaVinci Resolve became useless on Windows 10, and OBS was barely holding it together. When I tell you I did everything to resolve this, I mean I spent an entire Month troubleshooting this. The only solution I could find was to abandon Windows all together.
I've been meaning to switch my Setup to Mint Cinnamon for a while as I've been testing it out in Virtual box for a year or so, and after this nonsense I got a new NMVe basically immediately to run Mint on, and after switching properly I have to say I'm likely to never use Windows as my Host OS again. And yes I tested Windows on the NMVe. The issue persisted there aswell. And testing Mint via Virtual Box on Windows with Hardware Exposed via PAE and AMD-V showed the issue was entirely on Windows.
For reference this is my current rig: Everything is the same as when using Windows 10
GPU: Nvidia RTX a4500 20gb
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600g
Ram: 16GB 3200mhz
DAC: PreSonus Audiobox iTwo
Capture Card: AverMedia HD Mini GC311
The Results:
Not only does Mint Cinnamon not have any of the issues I've had with Windows over the past Decade, which still persist to this day, but literally every single device I have just works.
Basically everything is Plug-n-Play with <20ms of latency on the Capture Card, which on Windows had a minimum of 600ms delay using drivers required for the card to even be detected. My Audio interface also works even better than before, with neither my DAC or Capture Card requiring manual driver installs, as their protocols are Native to the Linux Kernel.
Proton lets you play any Windows game on Steam that doesn't have explicit Linux Support, with Wine available for desktop applications. Both run better than a Native Windows install due to Mints lack of Bloatware.
Windows 10 has so much built-in Overhead that Mint can Emulate it through Virtual Box faster than if Win10 were the Host OS.
In Short: Fuck Windows. :) Also this is how my desktop looks currently:

also bought a huge update for my PC today! (basically the cost of a whole new one :/ alas) but my gpu is really outdated and changing that forced me to also change the motherboard forcing me to change the cpu and memory as well
but then I should be fine for many more years to come :) AND I can try to install a linux OS again (which failed terribly last time)

I don't like how prominent Windows and MacOS are because they make people need to get new hardware all the time.
my daily driver laptop is literally almost 15 years old. it has a first generation, dual core Intel i3 at 2.4GHz with 4GB of RAM, integrated graphics and a 128GB SSD. and it's perfectly usable for daily activities. I can browse the web, watch YouTube, I can even play some games.
and then I look at people saying that they're surprised that companies still sell laptops with 4GB of RAM. 4GB is perfectly usable! with like 10 tabs open in Firefox I'm using only 3GB.
I got this laptop for free because somebody was going to throw it away like 8 years ago or something, because it was getting slow. it ran windows 10 and was definitely slowing down, but by changing some settings on windows it ran a lot better but still not great.
but by putting Linux on it, it suddenly became perfectly powerful enough. even a heavy distro like Ubuntu ran like a breeze on it. I could play games on it again, I could run a bunch of programs at the same time again, I could watch YouTube at 1080p again.
and to this day it's still perfectly usable with modern software. I switched to Debian, and used a more lightweight DE, and it still runs great. it does have hiccups every now and then, namely Firefox no longer uses hardware video decoding on the GPU which makes it a little jittery with 1080p60 YouTube, but other than that, it's perfectly fine.
and installing and using Linux isn't nearly as advanced as people say it is. with just a little bit of knowledge you can easily install and use Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and others, and bring life to computers again.
it's windows that's making your computer slow. stop buying new computers and contributing to e-waste.
and if you don't want to switch, I'm more than happy to take your computer off your hands when it inevitably becomes too slow to use.

While I am by no means an expert in Linux distros (distributions) might I recommend two widely supported and user-friendly ones?
Linux distributions are basically packets of software that envelop the Linux kernel that determine the look, feel and function of the operating system. While there is a multitude of flavours, Debian-based systems such as Ubuntu and Mint are widely supported and have huge communities while being user friendly (i.e. keep the command line usage low/ explained). I managed to squeeze so much processing power out of my old laptop just by switching from Windows 10 to Linux Mint (very lightweight, has a graphic interface very similar to Windows). If you don't have to worry about every every Byte of RAM tho, I'd say Ubuntu is a very good start
Hope this helps <3
Thank you! I'm currently deciding between Mint with the Cinnamon desktop or Fedora with either KDE or Cinnamon. Going to try live USBs to test them out.
For others considering the switch: Mint is the most commonly recommended "easy and stable for new Linux users" version. Fedora is "stable but you're going to need to Google how to do more things until you're used to it." Cinnamon desktop is "things look like Windows", KDE is "not trying to be Windows but similarly intuitive, and you can customize everything", and the third common desktop is GNOME which is "doing it's own thing but looks like Mac, with lots of tiled apps".
Note that these are one-day-of-research impressions. I'll probably try GNOME too, but it looks instinctively ugly to me when I search up images of it.
Most common versions seem to have the option to try them before switching your computer over, so that's my next step.

My mom's laptop is old and can't run Windows 11.
I ran a few DEs past her and KDE Plasma passed the vibe check if that helps.
(Joke poll aside, this is somewhat of a genuine question. A lot of the beginner-friendly distros I can think of off the top of my head don't have KDE as an option. [I'll admit the only beginner-friendly distro I really know is Linux Mint, but a lot of the other ones I've heard of don't have KDE either. {Elementary OS, PopOS, etc.} She also outright said no to Cinnamon.])
Maybe OpenSUSE Slowroll? Debian stable?
She doesn't actually use her laptop that often so I don't think the actual distro will matter that much. She certainly doesn't care about the latest features.
But as an OpenSUSE Tumbleweed enjoyer, I know that libzypp doesn't (didn't?) play nicely with Discover for some updates. It'd probably be fine with any more traditionally package managed distro though.
But Debian Bookworm doesn't have KDE 6...
Even still, I'll probably just go with Debian stable unless any of you have a better idea.
Some specs below the cut if it matters to y'all
The laptop is a Dell XPS L702X
It has a 2 core 4 thread Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz
It has 8 GiB of fully replaceable ram. (4 DDR3 SODIMMs. 2 Currently populated) (We are considering upgrading it.)
It has a dedicated Nvidia GeForce GT 550M
But the cpu also has an iGPU. It doesn't identify itself as anything in particular.
For wifi, it has an Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6230 (Since it's Intel I don't think it'll be an issue, but ya never know. It didn't work in Clonezilla, but that might not even consider WiFi.)
It has a 500 GB SSD and a 500 GB hard drive. Both are supposedly healthy according to SMART.
I've already cloned everything with Clonezilla. (All the specs except the wifi are from the Clonezilla image.)
I don't think these specs matter too much. Windows 10 runs... fine. (I don't think the Nvidia drivers are even installed?) I can't imagine any particular Linux distro will run any worse. It's mostly needed for taxes and stuff anyway.
(As I was checking what the wifi card was, windows gave an ad notification for Flight Sim 2024. I don't think this laptop could even install it. Staying on Windows 10 isn't really an option.)

Y me encanta.

excited to be using linux on my big screen computer~~
a cool thing I've noticed is that linux I think takes up significantly less space than windows ever did. and I'm just running the cinnamon desktop~~!!
out of the 256 gb of space on the initial OS drive, I've got 217 gb left. windows I forgot how much it left me with tho...
Linux mint is nice so far~~ especially the second hard drive being password protected to mount; rather than being accessible to anyone using the computer.
installed vlc as a media player and now idk what other applications I'd need.
or if I even have enough space currently to try to get steam games working. as the terabyte hard drive is cluttered with anime and music I've saved. and where all of my data is stored separate from the os.
one thing I lost tho that I had forgotten about was my progress in cookie clicker, as I was playing through that, and i don't remember when my last backup was or how much I've lost. By the time I realized I hadn't backed it up, the install was already in progress and it was far too late.
I like cinnamon so far~~ the keyboard shortcuts to reveal all the different desktops,, even found zoom features that are really useful. I thought you had to pinch or push your fingers apart while pushing the hotkey toggle like you do on iphones to zoom in on pictures and stuff, but no. just slide your fingers from the top of the touchpad to the bottom to zoom in, and reverse to go back to small.
I never used zoom on windows; much to my detriment, lol. bad vision is bad. I'm saying it again even tho it might not be relevant here, I'm legally blind. left eye bad vision, right eye none whatsoever. I never liked on board zoom on windows and i'm not sure why... this is nice.
I'm still excited cause I've always wanted to run linux on my big screened gaming pc, but it would never boot. come to find out I was installing grub in the wrong place... needed it on dev/sda1 instead of dev/sda itself. I guess because 1 is the first part of the disk?
hopefully much less spywarey than windows~~ and more secure. I've always assumed that linux/unix/bsd were more secure than windows in general.
funny enough when I first found these types of operating systems as a teenager a long time ago, I jumped into the deep end and immediately tried FreeBSD first. then backed off and stuck with fedora, opensuse for a bit, then to the more user friendly stuff like ubuntu, and linux mint. then many years later I stopped liking what whomever makes ubuntu was doing, and switched to mint, but they still used ubuntu's base, so now I use debian based stuff.
there's my entire fore into linux from being a teenager to now, lol. also very fanboyish high school report on how linux/unix was better than windows. before I even started using linux proper. ahhhh the cringe.
sucks a bunch of corporate stuff doesn't work with linux; cause I'm always seeing like the eye doctors operating systems being windows, and I'm always like "why don't you use linux?" the reason is they want their technology and stuff to work. like it won't on linux?
positive experience and a positive rant~~~ still going to tag it as rant anyway tho~~

Linux recommandations for a long time Windows user?
Should begin with explaining desktop environments, because imo that's the thing that'll matter the most when you switch from Windows to Linux.
The desktop environment is the graphical user interface (GUI) that you use to interact with the computer. Lots of people are scared to use Linux because they imagine it being very heavy on the typed commands in the terminal, but you can perfectly use Linux nowadays without using the CLI (command line interface).
Here's an overview of some desktop environments:
Now to actual Linux versions.
The classic answer to people who want to try Linux for the first time is Linux Mint.
Tumblr media
It uses the Cinnamon desktop environment. It very easy to use and somewhat Windows-looking. It was my first Linux too, but I found it lacking in customizability.
I then used Ubuntu for a while with the GNOME desktop environment. It looks like this, so it's a little different than the Windows look.
Tumblr media
The biggest advantage of Ubuntu is that it is the most used Linux version. If you ever have a problem with the system or a question about the settings, an internet search will provide you many many answers.
The distro I'm currently using, and am most happy with, is Debian with KDE Plasma as desktop environment. (Ubuntu is based on Debian btw) It is a most stable Linux version and the KDE makes is very Windows-looking and very customizable!
This how it looks default
Tumblr media
This is my PC with two monitors
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So to answer you question. It kinda depends what you want? If you just wanna dip your toes in to try it easy, go Mint. If you wanna make a proper switch, I can personally recommend Debian with KDE Plasma. (when you install Debian you can choose the desktop environment) But that's on my limited experience with Linux distros.
If you have more questions on how the GUI works and what's similar or different to Windows, don't hesitate to ask!

I'm slowly reading up on building a NAS so that when I want to look at my photos I don't have to do slapstick shit with a stack of hard drives and HDD pricing is bizarre. 12, 14, and 16TB drives are all nearly identical prices. Some cool Toshiba drives out there. Haven't thought about Toshiba in a while.
I was going to do 2×12TB because while RAID isn't backup, having to restore from a cloud backup is a pain in the ass on slow internet if I can just restore from a RAID mirror and verify against hashes. I guess I'll probably end up at 2×16TB? That would really put me well beyond my Mission Time target (10 years) since I figure I generate at most like 300GB of photos a year. I guess I can get my brother to upload the family photo archive as well.
I considered doing 3×8TB but that requires me to actually consider a real PC build and not just jamming it in an old Lenovo Thinkcentre or whatever and also the pricing shakes out pretty similarly. At work I recently adopted a forgotten RAID1 server (read, old 2-bay WD MyCloud running debian) that finally had a drive failure after 11 years so I figure, 2 drives is. plenty.

Here's a really bad photo of a minke whale I took in August 2024
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Music:
I like music a lot, both in the creation and listening of it; I'll start with listening. As I said earlier, my current favourite artist is Chappell Roan; her music is so good, it is simply always a vibe. Plus, few things can help (one of my) more dreary moods than the hyping-up power of H-O-T-T-O-G-O you can take me HOOOT TOOO GOOOOOO . That being said, my music taste is quite eclectic. Some other of my favourite artists are, in no particular order:
Mark Knopfler
Stan Rogers
Hozier
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Fish in a Birdcage
Icon For Hire
Boygenius
Ken Tizzard
Aviators
Set It Off
And here are some very good songs:
Whatcha Want - Lawrence
Giant - Stan Rogers
Picture You - Chappell Roan
Bitter - Chappell Roan
Red Wine Supernova
Border Reiver - Mark Knopfler
Scavenger's Yard - Mark Knopfler
The Nancy - Stan rogers
Hope of Morning - Icon For Hire
Fire With Fire - AlicebanD
I also have a fairly extensive cd collection, which I am very proud of :>
Now, if you somehow wound up here for the making of music, you are probably better off going to @literatureisdying. They actually play songs. I do not do that. I play tuba in my school's concert band, which I consider myself pretty good at; I sing, mainly quietly to myself in the mornings, but also in my school's choir, and a musical one time (where I had a solo that I'm told was pretty good); I am also learning electric bass, which is going fairly well!
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Art:
I love art. So so so so much. I don't do as much of it as I would like to, but I like to think I'm pretty good at it. I mostly use watercolour paints or ballpoint pen. (Which generally comes from my philosophy of not dwelling on the past, because I find myself trying over and over again to get every stroke perfect when using more forgiving mediums, and that's not very fun imo, but this is the art section, not the philosophy section, so I digress) I also sometimes dabble in digital art or pencil work, though not often. (see earlier tangent) My icon is my own art, as is:
This whaaaale
Tumblr media
I really like this whale skeleton painting, painted with the whale skeleton on display at Memorial University of Newfoundland as a reference :3
And this thing:
Tumblr media
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Computers:
I really love computers and computer science. This does not extend to liking ai art or LLM "AI"s in general. I do really like keeping my computers happy and healthy. (even if it takes a hacksaw sometimes (No this is not an exaggeration (If you're interested, ask me. (how many stacked brackets can I use before it gets to be too hard to read? (oh well))))) I recently retired my lovely Optiplex 980, as her hardware was not up to the stress I put her under. By the end she needed two powers supplies to run. I am currently using a very nice machine containing a Nvidia GTX 760 GPU, 16gb of RAM, and a Ryzen 7 inside. She does good work. Writing this I realize I am personifying my computers a bit; it's only weird if you make it weird.
My computers have a variety of operating systems; my main machine runs (for the moment) windows 10, as I need some of its features, you must understand that I do not like windows; my laptop and secondary desktop runs Debian. I also have an old Windows XP machine, and an Arch machine.
On my computers, I code, play a couple of video games, and do whatever work I need to. I am fairly fluent in Python, and I would like to learn a few other languages. My video gaming extends primarily to Terraria, Trailmakers, Minecraft, and Skyrim. In Terraria I have over 8000 hours, so if you need advice on the subject, I'm your gal. :>
Tumblr media
Also here's a fractal I coded :>
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
@xx-midnight-calico-cat-xx:
Is awesome and you should check out their blog. Like aaaah I am so lucky :3
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Theatre:
I am decidedly in the camp of theatre kid. I have done fourteen shows, of which two were withing school productions and the other twelve were with a local youth theatre company. I like to think I am a decent actress. I am a huge fan of devised theatre, and I would like to someday actually write a play of my own, but I currently haven't the inspiration nor the grasp of narrative writing to really do that. Someday...
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Star Trek (And also other video media):
I like star-trek. It's fun. I haven't watched all of it yet, I have only watched (Most of) TOS and (A good chunk of) TNG. Very fun. I am also an enjoyer of several other tv shows and movies, including: The Princess Bride, The Owl House, Gravity Falls, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, First Kill (curse you Netflix...... (Objectively I see why they cancelled it but I really like vampires so.)), Batman: The Animated Series, and probably others I'm failing to think of right now.
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Vampires:
On the subject of Vampires, they're really hot cool. The concept of immortality is very philosophically fascinating to me, especially immortality at the price of others' lives. (I could get into that here, but this is already waaay longer than I intended, so if you want to know, ask! :> The aesthetic is also just so cool. I will leave it there, but know there is more I could say.
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Books:
Big fan of books. So very tactile, so much reader interpretation, so much symbolism, so much tell-don't-show storytelling, oh books my beloved. Currently my all time favourite is The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrot. It takes place on two ships during in the Atlantic theatre of World War Two, and is hauntingly heavy. It gets somewhat gory at times, and it is written by a WW2 veteran so don't expect it to sugarcoat things. I also highly recommend approaching it like a high-school English teacher, because I swear to you: THE CURTAINS ARE NEVER JUST BLUE. I am a big fan of Neil Gaiman's work, and at the time of writing this I am partway through Bram Stoker's Dracula
