What really makes XCX special is that you AREN'T the Hero. You're not the Chosen One or even the central protagonist despite being the player character.

You're the Hero's SIDEKICK.

Elma is the Hero. She's the main character. She has the super mysterious past, the secret origins, the insane skill and power that she's worked for years to attain. You're her eyecandy/sidekick that she pulled out of an almost literal garbage can. You're the rock that keeps her grounded when she starts to lose her way. You're her babygirl/support.

You're the Lancer, not the Hero.

I forgot how goddamn funny, and how goddamn insufferable, H.B. is in Xenoblade Chronicles X. He's such a callous little piece of shit with borderline wrecker behaviors. The humans are refugees, and he's insisting on doing duplicate labor in an unnecessary ego contest?

So why is that such a big deal? Humans have been on Mira for two months-ish, and are having so many manpower shortages that you get interactions like this one...

BLADE isn't really "incompetent" when they're understaffed. Hell, they lied about how many people they found when Elma found us in Primordia. BLADE claimed they found ten more people, when they only found us. Everyone's working longer hours (because they *have* to) and it's raised a lot of tensions in NLA.

Which brings me back to H.B.'s behavior and insistence on doing duplicate labor because he's "too good" for menial tasks. Attitudes like his are dangerous, and he's clearly a bit of a sociopath. H.B.'s not really a great companion, either.

Xenoblade Chronicles X - Remastered

This is the original trailer, I can’t believe it’s been 10 years, but this week the remastered definitive edition will be released.

I first discovered Monolith Soft, the developer, when I played Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos Origins on the Game Cube. Those were the games that got me into JRPGs and actually, gaming at all. When Xenoblade Chronicles came out for the Wii, I bought it on the day of release just because it was created by Monolith Soft. This was followed by X, 2 and 3… and I’ve loved them all. By far, my favourite series, I’m very excited to get the high definition version of this completely remastered game. Will be available on the Switch and the new Switch 2.

Xenoblade Chronicles X Pairings that live in my head rent free

Cross x Elma: Yeah, yeah, I'm just in love with Elma but there's a certain poetry to Elma being a Reclaimer and falling in love with a piece of the White Whale she woke up. Someone who doesn't know or remember Elma the Hero, but just sees her for who she is, someone with whom she can build a relationship from the ground up the way it's meant to be. Someone she doesn't have to be the invincible hero around.

Hope x Murderess: The definition of "I can fix her" x "I can make her worse". Everyone is expecting some kind of con and is ready to kill Murderess at the first sign of her hurting Hope, but Murderess is unwilling to admit this stupid sunshine person actually wormed her way into her heart and it's driving her NUTS. And Hope latches onto Murderess after Ornella because Murderess is self-evidently selfish and won't pretend to be anyone else and if she hurts her it at least won't be a surprise. And every-time Murderess doesn't, it makes Hope feel a little better.

Doug x Lao: Old friends forced together after a loss so tremendous that there are no words for it. Doing your best to be there for your buddy, trying to pull hi out of the abyss he's falling into. Finding you enjoy spending time with him more and more. But no way you're gonna try to make anything more of it. Not anytime soon. Not after what he's been through. And then... it's too late. He's gone, you're alone, and you're haunted by a specter of what might have been.
