We sat at the long wooden table in the kitchen , Ringo and George on one bench, Pattie and I facing them on the opposite bench. Maureen spent the entire evening flitting around like a little bird, landing here, then there, jumping up to cool an omelet for Ringo…at one point Maureen went to a side table, opened the drawer, and pulled out a packet of Marlboros, George’s brand. Maureen and Ringo both smoked Larks. George looked up at her as she put the cigarettes on the table next to his hand and smiled. Nobody said a word. I could hear the tick of the clock on the kitchen wall. We sat there in silence, and then George turned to Ringo and said, “You know, Ringo, I’m in love with your wife.” - Chris O’Dell (Miss. The final straw was his affair with Maureen Starr, Ringo’s wife. She was the last person I would have expected to stab me in the back, but she did. I discovered from some photos Terry had developed that she had been staying in the house with George one weekend when Jenny and I had gone to Devon to see my mother. He had given her a beautiful necklace, which she wore in front of me. Then I found them locked into a bedroom at Friar Park. I stood outside banging on the door and saying to George, “What are you doing? Maureen’s in there, isn’t she? I know she is,” but he laughed…eventually he opened the door and said, “Oh, she’s just a bit tired so she’s lying down.” I went straight up to the top of house and, with the help of Phil and Andy, the studio engineers, lowered the OM flag George had flying from the roof and hoisted a skull and crossbones instead. Toby had dreaded this day, curled up on the barely there mattress in Kyle's room. Old room he has to remind himself. And it really didn't belong to him in a traditional sense either; the only furnishings were the bed itself, a clear plastic Tupperware that his few clothes were tossed into, and the small bathroom that only had a toilet and a sink, no door.

He had received a full physical three days ago from what he assumed was an actual doctor, which was incredibly bizarre. He was too stunned to even ask questions. Even after the scene with the fire poker a year ago, he had only received burn cream and a bandage from Stephanie, and that was the extent of any care. But that. That was weird. Then, for his only meal later that same day was actual steak and potatoes, which he was told to eat slowly, as not to throw up on himself. Then, for the past two and a half days, he had received not only breakfast but lunch and dinner too.

But who was he to question extra, and hot, food being given to him? He had gotten so very tired of cold cut turkey or their leftover take out that was nearly going bad? But with every bite of the warmth soothing his aching gums and throat and stomach, he felt it like a tickle at the back of his skull.

"I got sold."

There was a commotion going on in front of the door to his room.

"I'm not doing this. This is bullshit. You should do it." Stephanie. Rough when she needed to be, which was most of the time, but had always come to clean his wounds and talk to him after a session. Especially if she was the one on the other side or directing. He knew she was just doing her job.

"You're so fucking soft. That's why it has to be you to teach you a fucking lesson and grow some balls." Devon. A prick and pain in the ass most of the time, but knew when to call it quits to protect the merchandise. Him. All of them.

The door was thrust open, a plastic brief case and Stephanie shoved in, and swiftly locked. Once she regained her balance on the bed frame, and a hissed, "dickhole," from her, she stared not at him but at the plaster a little above his head. "Hey Tobes."

He began to tremble. This was it. Even though the scenes and sessions were never predictable, at least he had routine here. Saw the door to the room and the red light above it and knew what he was in for. Now he would be in the hands of someone who he didn't know, and didn't know him.

The bed squeaked and the mattress sank down as she sat on it, the plastic case in her lap. She was fiddling with one of the clasps with a thumb.

"Listen, the both of us know exactly what's going on here. But just know that this wasn't easy for us. We had actually turned down offers for you in the past, did you know that?" He shook his head. "But we just couldn't say no to this one. One hundred thousand dollars. That's how much he paid, upfront with Harrison. Cash. So you understand that was an opportunity we couldn't exactly pass up, right?"

He felt like he was going to be sick, and there were no cameras around to capture it for one of the sites they worked with. He shook his head again. He understood. He understood, but his eyes filled with tears. He was always so emotional.

She patted the case softly with one hand. "And look! The guys even agreed to let me give you a little something to make the move a little easier. I'm glad to see you in the sweater I like. It's almost time to go, so you can then think of it as a parting gift if you want."

The sweater was a simple grey one, red roses printed into the soft fabric. He rolled one of the sleeves a little past the elbow and presented her with his arm. He knew from hearing the screams and the fights down the hall that it was much easier to comply. He didn't want to have to get handcuffed and dragged into the van, like Kyle did. There were still red stains from his blood in the wood floor. And he had survived this long by being perfectly pliable.

The needle was small and sucked up the drugs from the vial like it was hungry for it. He couldn't help the buzz of excitement that this small mercy was going to be afforded to him, that he would get to fly there, first class.

As the drugs were put into his veins, as she kissed him forcefully, her tongue wet in his mouth, her finally gave her what she wanted. A softly spoken, not horse from screaming or around a gag or swallowed up in his own blood: "Okay."

J. Robert Oppenheimer was certainly one of the more complex men – with one of the more complex legacies – in modern history.

He was a scientist who believed in the sanctity of life, and yet his greatest discovery is forever linked to massive death. He was called both a war hawk and a communist, but in this film, he refers to himself as a New Deal Democrat. He created the most awesome weapon in American history (at the time), but he apparently sincerely hoped the specter of nuclear Armageddon would stop people from using it.

His invention of the atomic bomb certainly put an exclamation point on the end of World War II, and yet as Oppenheimer points out, it may not have even been necessary. Hitler was dead, Germany had fallen, and the Japanese were teetering. Chances are good they would have surrendered even without having two of their cities annihilated. (Oppenheimer actually tried to talk Harry S. Truman out of using the bomb on Japan, feeling that just the knowledge that it was there may be enough of a deterrent.) He spent much of his later life trying to protest the use of his greatest achievement.

He was a loving, doting husband and also a total womanizer. He was a good friend and at the same time he was rather self-involved. He became a scientific celebrity, but he was an intensely private man who rather hated the spotlight. He was a mostly non-political man who became entangled in several political morasses. He had passionately held beliefs, but he often was unwilling to fight the injustices going on around him, simply hoping against hope that the people on the other side would come to their senses. And he always overestimated the intrinsic good in people.

It perhaps makes a certain amount of sense that the film about Oppenheimer’s life would be helmed by Christopher Nolan, a similarly complex character. Nolan is a brilliant filmmaker (The Dark Knight, Inception, Memento), but not always all that good as a storyteller (Interstellar, Tenet, Batman Begins).

Well, with Oppenheimer, Nolan has one hell of a story to tell. It’s smart, thought-provoking, tragic, and intensely timely even decades after the action took place. And even though the film runs a little bit long (three hours!) and has occasional slow patches, it is quite probably Nolan’s best film.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, Oppenheimer takes a measured, scientist’s perspective to the life and times of a flawed but basically brilliant man. From his youth in university, through the Manhattan Project and his later time as an advocate against nuclear proliferation, Oppenheimer flips back and forth through the years and history, putting a microscope on a man who probably never totally wanted the scrutiny.

Framed around an attempted political takedown of the scientist in his later years, Oppenheimer is both a courtroom drama and a truly inspired celebration of science, both its good and bad aspects.

Along those lines, know going in that Oppenheimer is not going to dumb things down for mass consumption. It is often talky and takes on complicated scientific and philosophical concepts and respects the audience enough to assume that they will be able to keep up.

Oppenheimer is a thoughtful, intelligent and gorgeously shot snapshot of our recent history. Do not be surprised to see a lot of this film on Oscar night next year.

If you ever want a prompt, something with Granada Holmes and Watson helping 'Random Harvest' Paula with her search after her husband goes missing

I have been contemplating it, and I'm not sure how much it would change. But I am interested by it in part because in book!canon, Charles Rainier adored the Holmes stories as a small boy, and was taken by an indulgent butler to see Baker Street when he was in London at the age of seven (my heart), cementing Sherlock Holmes as sign and symbol of the lost rightness and security of his world. I have a normal amount of feelings about this. Theories below.

So. Holmes and Watson might well take a holiday at the end of the world in Devon. And in some lonely and lovely spot on one of their rambles, they might well encounter a woman and a small boy. (Young John would, I am convinced, soon be sitting on Watson's foot.) Holmes could easily deduce her search for news from the wedding ring, her anxiety, the discouraging official letters and the fresh, undaunted telegraph forms. It is even true, I think, that Holmes' particular methods and insights would be well suited to solving this puzzle. I've hypothesized elsewhere that Watson might be involved in work with the damaged minds of the war that was to end wars. And if they conclude that this man would not desert his family (impossible,) and he has not appeared anywhere else, then would it not be logical to investigate a mysterious appearance to match this disappearance? Whatever remains, however improbable.

However. I don't think this would substantially change the subsequent unfolding of events because, crucially, Paula does not want her husband by persuasion or by the force of logic. She wants him as he was; she wants his love. (Do I cry every time? Yes.) What this does change is the unfolding of events after their reunion at the cottage. I am firmly convinced that Paula does not sail for Buenos Aires. Why sail for the other side of the world, and an escape from what has become unbearable, when suddenly the person she loves most in the world is once again entirely hers?

Still, I think Charles asks if she plans to sail for Buenos Aires (ridiculous, beloved man) and receives a response in the negative. At this point, the story of what led him to Devon emerges. Chet has been left bewildered in his wake, with Harrison too tactful to explain; only Julian is, I suspect, unruffled by this conduct. Dry, observant Julian may even remark that a greater leaven of eccentricity would do Charles good. In any case: I think they agree together that although, if anything, he's experienced whatever the opposite of a breakdown is, he may in good conscience take a few days away from the business and from Parliament, for his health. The gleam in Paula's eyes at this suggestion is, perhaps, slightly wicked. Paula, who has maintained a correspondence with an address in Sussex, suggests that they ought to make a social call before returning to London, if he doesn't mind (Charles, at this point, minds nothing.)

And so they do. Once again journeying together by a series of slow trains across England, they come at last to another cottage, with another creaking gate, and beehives in the garden where two men are working. Sherlock Holmes may no longer be in Baker Street, but once again, all is right with the world.
