Demystifying the IR Thermometer: Your Essential Guide to Non-Contact Temperature Measurement

In today's world, where contactless solutions are increasingly sought after, one tool shines brightly: the IR thermometer. This handy device, often referred to as a non-contact thermometer, revolutionizes temperature measurement by eliminating the need for physical contact. This makes it a valuable asset in various fields, from healthcare and cooking to industrial applications and even home improvement projects.
What is an IR Thermometer?
An IR thermometer, also known as an infrared thermometer, works by measuring the infrared radiation emitted by an object. The device then converts this radiation into a temperature reading, displayed on its digital screen. This process happens instantly, making it a much faster option than traditional contact thermometers.
How Does an IR Thermometer Work?
internal workings of an IR thermometer
The core principle behind an IR thermometer lies in the concept of blackbody radiation. Every object emits infrared radiation, and the intensity of this radiation depends on its temperature. The hotter the object, the more radiation it emits. The IR thermometer detects this emitted radiation and uses it to calculate the object's temperature.
Here's a breakdown of the key components involved:
Lens: Focuses the infrared radiation emitted by the object. Sensor: Detects the intensity of the focused infrared radiation. Electronics: Processes the sensor data and converts it into a temperature reading. Display: Presents the calculated temperature on a digital screen. Advantages of Using an IR Thermometer: Non-contact: Eliminates the risk of cross-contamination, making it ideal for medical applications and food safety. Quick and efficient: Provides instantaneous temperature readings, saving time and effort. Safe for use on sensitive or hazardous materials: No need to physically touch the object, making it suitable for dangerous environments or delicate surfaces. Wide temperature range: Can measure temperatures over a broad spectrum, from sub-zero to several thousand degrees Fahrenheit. Easy to use: Requires minimal training and operates with simple buttons. Portable and versatile: Can be easily carried and used in various settings.
Applications of IR Thermometers:
IR thermometers find diverse applications across various industries and everyday life. Here are some prominent examples:
Healthcare:
Measuring body temperature for fever detection. Monitoring wound healing. Checking the temperature of food and beverages to ensure food safety.
Industrial:
Monitoring machinery temperature for potential overheating. Identifying hotspots in electrical systems. Measuring the temperature of hazardous materials.
Automotive:
Checking engine temperature and tire pressure. Diagnosing electrical problems.
Home improvement:
Identifying drafts and leaks around windows and doors. Checking the temperature of grills and ovens. Monitoring the temperature of water heaters and boilers.
How to Choose the Right IR Thermometer:
With a plethora of IR thermometers available, choosing the right one depends on your specific needs and intended use. Here are some key factors to consider:
Temperature range: Select a thermometer that covers the temperature range you need to measure. Accuracy: Look for a thermometer with high accuracy specifications for critical applications. Distance-to-spot ratio: Choose a thermometer with a suitable ratio for the size of the object you plan to measure. Emissivity setting: Some thermometers allow adjusting the emissivity setting for different materials for more precise readings. Additional features: Consider features like laser pointers for targeting, backlighting for low-light conditions, and data logging for recording temperature readings over time. Tips for Using an IR Thermometer: Always hold the thermometer at the correct distance and angle to the object you are measuring. Consult the manufacturer's instructions for specific guidelines. Ensure the object's surface is clean and free from any debris that might affect the reading. Be aware of the emissivity of the object you are measuring. Some materials require adjusting the emissivity setting for accurate readings. Avoid taking measurements near reflective surfaces or in direct sunlight. Use a calibration source regularly to ensure the accuracy of your thermometer.
With its versatility and ease of use, the IR thermometer has become an indispensable tool in various fields. By understanding its working principle, advantages, and applications, you can choose the best IR thermometer for your needs and harness its power to tackle temperature measurement tasks with confidence.

an excuse to show off some of the things I learned when I went on a ghost hunt a few months back hahaha
“Ripley,” he said, once they were inside and no stray passersby could possibly hear. “I’ve learned a lot about vampires since we last hung out.”
“Oh, yeah?” she said. She dropped her bag and dropped down next to it, started pulling boxes and meters out.
Nat did the same. “Yeah,” he said. “I learned that we have to, like, kill people. And also that when we die we explode into a huge gory mess of eyes and teeth. If we get shot in the brain or poisoned real bad.”
“Pretty fucking gnarly, hey?”
“Mm,” Nat said. “What kind of people do you go after?”
“Oh, I mostly just hang out at bars and eat creeps,” Ripley said. “Someone slips something into someone’s drink, someone gets a little too nonconsensually handsy… I’ll lure ‘em out back and take care of ‘em.”
“Cool,” Nat said. But Quinn’s earlier concern still scratched at his mind. “Doesn’t that get dangerous, though?” he asked. “Like, what if someone sees you? What if someone traces the deaths back to you?”
“Well, the cops are useless, for one,” Ripley said. She started fiddling with a small box and a few blinking lights snapped on. “Drunk people aren’t the most observant, either. It’s fine.”
“And vampire hunters?” Nat pressed.
She tilted her head. “We don’t get those here too often anymore. Hunters don’t think there’s many vampires left in Darwelaide.”
“What about the Knight?”
“The Knight?” Ripley peered at him over the top of her box. “Where did you hear that name?”
“From… um, Quinn.”
She pursed her lips. “Oh,” she said. “Well, they’re probably just trying to rile you up, get you nervous. The Knight hasn’t been around for twenty, thirty years. She’s pretty famous. And pretty dead.”
Ripley nudged through the collection of objects on the ground with her boot, naming each of them as she did so.
“We got EMF readers for measuring fluctuations in electromagnetic fields,” she said. “We got digital voice recorders to record sounds beyond human hearing…”
“Beyond vampire hearing, too?”
“Depends how nervous you are.”
“I’m not nervous.”
“Not scared of ghosts, Natty?”
“Not really. But kind of. But not. I mean, I don’t think they exist,” Nat said. “But I used to think vampires didn’t exist either. And I watched Supernatural Activity when I was way too young for it and it scarred me for life.”
Ripley laughed. “We’re probably the scariest things out here. What’s a ghost going to do to a vampire?”
“It could shoot me in the brain or poison me real bad.”
Her laugh became a cackle. When she settled, she said, “We have infrared thermometers, for measuring mysterious drops in temperature. Cold spots. We got motion-sensing cat toys—”
“Why?”
“The cat toys? Yeah, they cost, like, two dollars and work as good as any proper ghost-hunting sensor. They start flashing whenever something touches them.” Ripley unzipped a small case and pulled out a few seemingly unrelated objects. “We have trigger items here—things the ghosts of old might find interesting. Flask of alcohol, chocolate, tobacco… we put the cat toys with a trigger item and see what happens.”
“Oh, cool!” Nat said.
“And this guy”—Ripley waved about the box she was holding—“is a spirit box. It’s really fun. We’ll do this one together.”
“How does it work?”
“It scans through radio frequencies in little bursts and provides a way for spirits to communicate.”
“Ooh.”
“Here, grab some of these and turn them on.” Ripley made a sweeping motion to her equipment. “Go nuts! Go put ‘em around the place, anywhere that gives you spooky vibes.”
“We don’t keep them with us?”
“Ghosts are skittish. Ghosts are shy. You want to leave the devices in peace, mostly.”

Chapter Eleven: Parental Panic
The peaceful start to the morning didn’t last long.
Just as Beau pulled on a clean shirt and kissed Y/N’s forehead once more, he heard the unmistakable shuffle of small feet in the hallway, followed by a soft whimper.
Y/N turned instinctively. “That Eliza?”
Beau moved toward the door, cracking it open—and there she was.
Eliza stood in the hallway, her little face pale, her curls damp with sweat. She blinked slowly up at him, her voice small and fragile.
“My head hurts.”
Beau crouched immediately, his brow furrowing. He reached out and touched her forehead. “Damn, baby girl. You’re burnin’ up.”
Y/N was already on her feet, crossing the room. “Bring her in here. Lay her on the bed.”
Beau gently settled Eliza down, her body limp against the sheets. She let out a soft whimper but didn’t open her eyes.
Y/N reached for the digital thermometer from the dresser drawer—the infrared kind they always used on the kids—and pressed it gently to Eliza’s temple. She stroked her daughter's damp curls back, trying to keep her voice calm, soothing.
“C’mon, baby girl. Let Mama check you real quick.”
The thermometer gave a quiet beep.
Y/N looked down at the display—and froze.
“Beau,” she said, voice tightening with panic. “It says one-oh-four.”
Beau’s head snapped toward her. “What?”
“One hundred and four,” she repeated, already reaching for clean clothes. “We have to go. Now.”
Beau was already moving. “I’ll grab Caleb. You get her dressed. I’ll pull the truck around.”
It all happened fast—Caleb lifted from his crib and tucked quickly into his car seat with a light blanket, Eliza carefully dressed despite her limp frame, her head lolling weakly against Y/N’s chest as she whispered nonsense words that made no sense. The fever had her floating.
Beau was back inside within minutes, his keys in hand. “Truck’s warm. Let’s go.”
Y/N didn’t hesitate. She bundled Eliza in her arms, holding her tight, whispering softly to her even though Eliza barely responded.
“Stay with me, baby. Mama’s got you. Daddy’s taking us to the hospital.”
Beau opened the back door, letting Y/N climb in with Eliza, while he gently snapped Caleb’s car seat into place on the other side.
Y/N held Eliza close, rocking her slightly. “She’s so hot, Beau. She’s burning up.”
Beau’s jaw clenched as he shut the door and climbed behind the wheel. “We’re gonna get her there. Just hang on.”
And with that, he threw the truck into gear and peeled out of the driveway, the tires crunching over gravel as they sped toward the hospital.
The peaceful morning was gone.
And all that remained was fear—and the desperate hope that they'd made it in time.
The hospital sliding doors parted with a soft hiss, and the cold, sterile air of the emergency department rushed over them as Beau and Y/N stepped inside.
Y/N held Eliza tightly in her arms, the little girl hot and limp against her chest, her curls sticking to her damp forehead. She was murmuring something faint and nonsensical under her breath—half-asleep, half-lost in the fever.
Y/N approached the front desk fast, voice calm but tight, every word clipped with urgency. “My daughter’s four. She’s burning up. I just took her temp—104. She’s lethargic. She’s not responding like she should be.”
The triage nurse behind the desk stood immediately and hit the call button for intake. “We’ll take her back now. You did the right thing bringing her in.” The nurse’s eyes dropped to Eliza’s flushed, still face. “What’s her name?”
“Eliza. Eliza Arlen.”
“Any recent illnesses, exposure to others who’ve been sick?”
“No—she was fine yesterday. It came on fast.”
The nurse nodded, already typing, her voice clipped but kind. “Okay. Let’s get her into a room.”
As a second nurse came through the double doors to guide them back, Y/N followed without hesitation, Eliza still clinging to her in fevered sleep.
Behind her, Beau stood near the wall, shifting Caleb’s car seat with one hand and fumbling with his phone in the other. He had the phone pressed to his ear, his voice low and tight.
“Jenny, it’s me. I’m not comin’ in. Eliza’s real sick—we just got to the ER… yeah… no, it came on fast. 104-degree fever.”
A pause. He closed his eyes, his jaw tight as he listened.
“Yeah. Y/N’s with her now. I got Caleb. Can you let the deputies know I’m out for the day? Maybe longer.”
Another pause.
“Thanks. I’ll check in when I can.”
He ended the call and looked down at Caleb, who was blinking up at the fluorescent lights in quiet confusion, his little green eyes wide.
Beau crouched beside the car seat, brushing his hand gently over Caleb’s soft hair. “Hey, little man. Your sister’s gonna be okay, alright? Mama’s with her.”
Caleb babbled softly, unsure but content to sit still for the moment. Beau exhaled slowly, then stood and carried the seat toward the nurse’s station, glancing through the open door where he caught a glimpse of Y/N settling Eliza into a hospital bed.
The nurse was placing a cool cloth across Eliza’s forehead while asking Y/N questions—current weight, last meal, any history of febrile seizures.
Beau wanted to be in there, but right now, someone had to keep Caleb calm, had to stay grounded while the rest of his world was tipping sideways.
So he waited just outside, rocking Caleb gently in the carrier, his eyes locked on Y/N and Eliza as the nurse clipped a monitor to their daughter’s tiny finger.
“Hang in there, wolf-child,” Beau murmured under his breath. “We’ve got you.”
The hospital room was dim and quiet save for the gentle beeping of monitors. Y/N sat in the chair beside the bed, holding Eliza’s hand, while Beau stood nearby, rocking Caleb in the carrier, watching every movement with the eyes of a father who hadn’t blinked in minutes.
Eliza lay small and pale beneath the hospital blanket, her curls damp and stuck to her flushed face. A nurse had managed to bring her fever down a little with medication, but it still hovered dangerously high.
The doctor entered quietly, a kind-faced man with gentle hands who knelt at the side of the bed and began his assessment.
“Hi there, Eliza,” he said softly, reaching for his stethoscope. “I’m just going to take a quick listen to your heartbeat, alright? This won’t hurt.”
Eliza didn’t answer. Her eyes were barely open, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths.
Beau stood tense at the foot of the bed. Y/N stroked Eliza’s hand gently, whispering. “It’s okay, baby. Just the doctor. He’s going to help you feel better.”
The doctor leaned in closer, pressing the stethoscope gently to Eliza’s chest.
And that’s when it happened.
With zero warning, Eliza’s eyes flew open, wild and glassy with fever. She growled—actually growled—and in a burst of heat-fueled strength, she kicked out hard, landing a direct hit to the doctor’s groin.
He wheezed in pain, stumbling back with a sharp gasp.
“No!” Eliza shouted, voice hoarse and angry. “Fuck you, bitch!”
The room froze.
Y/N’s mouth dropped open. Beau’s jaw locked, eyes wide with disbelief.
The nurse—who had just returned with a fresh IV bag—dropped it.
Y/N sat back, completely stunned. “Eliza Jo Arlen!”
Beau cleared his throat, trying to form words. “Where in the hell did she learn that?”
The doctor, red-faced and clearly trying to recover some dignity, held up a hand. “It’s alright. High fevers can cause confusion, even aggression. She’s not in her right mind right now.”
Beau pinched the bridge of his nose. “Yeah, but I still gotta deal with the aftermath of my four-year-old kickin’ a doctor and cussin’ like she’s workin’ a bar fight.”
Y/N stood, gently restraining Eliza’s flailing legs as her daughter whimpered and turned away from the light. “I am so sorry,” she said to the doctor, her voice full of mortified apology. “She’s never—never—spoken like that. She’s not herself.”
The nurse, still slightly stunned, mumbled, “It happens. We’ve seen worse.”
Beau muttered under his breath, “I really hope that’s true.”
The doctor managed a shaky breath and waved them off kindly. “She’s got spirit. That’s something.”
Eliza, now fading again, curled up on her side with a shudder, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes.
Beau moved to the side of the bed, pressing his hand gently to her back. “It’s okay, wolf-child. We’re right here. You just rest, okay?”
Y/N sat beside her again, gently stroking her hair.
“I’m never letting her near your police scanner again,” she whispered to Beau.
He let out a breath, shaking his head. “I don’t even say that word.”
Y/N looked over her shoulder at him. “We watch PG movies, Beau.”
“I blame Jenny,” Beau muttered, gently bouncing Caleb, who was now wide awake and watching everything with quiet curiosity.
Despite the tension, Y/N smiled faintly and reached out for his hand. “I can’t believe she did that.”
Beau gave her a look—equal parts admiration, exasperation, and awe. “Our daughter just assaulted a doctor and cursed him out like a sailor. I can.”
Y/N leaned into him as he slid his arm around her shoulders. Eliza was drifting again, the fever still high but under watch.
Beau whispered into her hair, “Remind me to tell her she owes that man an apology when she’s lucid.”
“I’m writing it into her baby book,” Y/N replied. “First ER trip. First assault charge.”
They both laughed softly, because if they didn’t—if they let themselves feel just how scared they really were—they might come undone.
Their girl was still burning up. But she was fighting. And Lord, was she fierce.
Just like her mama.
Just like an Arlen.
An hour later, the room had calmed. The worst of the fever had broken with medication, and Eliza now lay bundled in fresh sheets, her breathing steadier, her lashes resting heavily on her flushed cheeks. Caleb had dozed off in his car seat after finishing a bottle Y/N had packed, and for the first time since the early morning, Beau and Y/N could sit without feeling like their world was tipping sideways.
The door opened quietly, and the same doctor—looking recovered, composed, and with an admirable sense of humor still intact—stepped inside with a tablet in hand.
Y/N stood immediately, brushing her hand over Eliza’s curls. Beau followed, careful not to jostle Caleb as he rose to stand beside her.
The doctor offered a calm, reassuring smile. “Good news. Eliza’s going to be okay.”
Y/N exhaled sharply, her hand finding Beau’s. “What’s causing the fever?”
“Looks like she’s fighting off a virus,” the doctor explained. “It’s going around—some nasty viral bug. We ran bloodwork and a nasal swab to rule out bacterial infection and anything serious. All signs point to a viral origin. That would explain the sudden spike in fever, the confusion, and even the… colorful language.”
Beau cleared his throat. “Yeah, about that…”
The doctor grinned. “Let’s call it a fever dream. I’ve been called worse by patients with less impressive vocabulary.”
Y/N let out a weak laugh, relief flooding her chest. “She scared us. One-oh-four is just—”
“It’s high,” the doctor agreed. “But you acted quickly. Getting her in when you did was exactly the right call.”
“Does she need to stay overnight?” Beau asked.
“We’re going to keep her a few more hours for observation. Make sure her temp stays down, fluids stay in, and her body’s not struggling once the meds wear off. If she holds steady, she can go home tonight with a strict care plan—hydration, alternating fever reducers, lots of rest.”
Y/N nodded, already shifting into practical mode. “We can do that.”
The doctor’s gaze softened as he looked at Eliza, then at both of them. “She’s tough. That much is clear.”
Beau squeezed Y/N’s hand. “She’s got a good example.”
Y/N tilted her head toward him. “That goes both ways, Sheriff.”
The doctor smiled at the exchange, then turned toward the monitors. “I’ll have a nurse come in to check vitals again soon. In the meantime, just keep her comfortable.”
As he stepped out, Beau and Y/N returned to Eliza’s bedside.
She stirred faintly, her brow furrowed as if she were still trying to fight the fever in her sleep.
Y/N leaned over and kissed her temple. “You did good, baby. Just rest now.”
Beau pulled a chair close, reaching out to brush a hand along his daughter’s damp curls. “You scared the hell out of us, kid,” he murmured. “But you’re gonna be just fine.”
And for the first time all day, it felt true.
The hospital room was dim and hushed, the chaos of the day before feeling distant now, like a bad dream beginning to fade. Eliza lay asleep in the bed, her face still a little pale, but the fever had broken. Her chest rose and fell in even rhythm, her small hand curled around the stuffed wolf Y/N had brought from home that morning.
Caleb slept in his carrier in the corner, his thumb tucked into his mouth, blissfully unaware that twenty-four hours earlier his big sister had sent everyone’s heart into a tailspin with a fever and a spontaneous 9-1-1 call.
Y/N sat on the couch tucked into the corner of the room, her legs stretched out, head resting on Beau’s chest. He had his arm around her, holding her close with a kind of quiet protectiveness that didn’t need words.
“I think this is the first time today I’ve sat down and actually… breathed,” she murmured.
Beau let out a soft breath, his lips brushing the top of her head. “Same here.”
They’d spent the entire day rotating between Eliza’s bedside, answering nurse questions, comforting Caleb, and pushing past the leftover fear from the day before. That lingering panic still hovered in the corners of their minds, even with Eliza’s vitals stabilizing and the doctor’s reassurances.
Beau’s hand drifted down to rest over Y/N’s stomach, where their next little miracle quietly grew. His thumb moved in slow, steady circles, grounding him. “I still can’t believe she did it. Dialed 9-1-1 all on her own.”
Y/N huffed a tired laugh. “I don’t think I’m ever gonna forget hearing her say that over the phone. I was still wiping my mouth when the dispatcher asked if I needed medical attention.”
Beau chuckled under his breath, shaking his head. “She’s got instincts. And attitude.”
“She gets both from you,” Y/N teased.
Beau gave a soft snort. “Yeah, well. She’s ours, through and through.”
The moment was quiet again—comfortable, settled.
Then Beau’s phone buzzed softly in his pocket.
Y/N stirred a little. “Work?”
Beau pulled it out and glanced at the screen. “Nah. Rick Holloway.” His voice softened. “My lawyer.”
Y/N straightened slightly, her hand sliding down to his. “The adoption?”
Beau nodded once, answering. “Hey, Rick. What’s goin’ on?”
He listened, quiet at first, then his brows lifted. His fingers tightened around Y/N’s.
“You’re kidding,” Beau murmured. “Already?”
There was a pause, then he exhaled slowly, a smile tugging at his mouth.
“Yeah. Yeah, that’s incredible. I appreciate it, Rick. Thanks for the call.”
He ended the call and sat still for a moment, then turned toward Y/N.
“They gave us the court date.”
Y/N’s breath caught. “Seriously?”
Beau nodded, his voice thick. “It’s on the books. Official hearing. We’re almost there.”
Y/N leaned forward, burying her face in his shoulder. “Oh my god.”
Beau held her close, brushing his lips against her hair. “Soon as that day hits, she won’t just be ours in our hearts. She’ll be ours on paper too.”
Y/N sat back just enough to look at him, her eyes glassy but full of love. “She’s always been yours.”
Beau looked over at Eliza, curled up in the hospital bed, a little warrior wrapped in fleece blankets and stubborn fire.
He smiled softly. “Yeah. She has.”
And now, the world would finally catch up.
The late afternoon sun was just beginning to dip behind the hills as the nurse returned with Eliza’s discharge papers, a quiet kind of peace settling over the room that hadn’t been there the day before.
Her fever had held steady—still not completely gone, but low enough, controlled, manageable. The worst had passed.
Eliza was quiet, worn out and groggy, but no longer glassy-eyed and delirious. She rested her head against Beau’s chest, half-asleep as he lifted her into his arms with a gentleness that didn’t match his size.
Y/N stood nearby, Caleb in the carrier on her arm, his pacifier bobbing as he watched the hospital room around him with sleepy curiosity.
“Got everything?” Beau asked, glancing over at her.
Y/N nodded, already reaching for the diaper bag. “Yeah. I think we’re good.”
The nurse smiled softly from the door. “She might sleep the rest of the evening. Just keep an eye on her temperature, give her fluids, and call us if anything changes.”
“Thank you,” Y/N said.
Beau nodded as well, his arms snug around Eliza’s small frame. “For everything.”
They stepped into the hallway together, the hospital suddenly feeling less clinical and more like something they were finally leaving behind.
As they reached the exit, Eliza stirred slightly in Beau’s arms.
“Daddy?” she mumbled.
“I’m right here, baby girl,” he said softly, kissing the side of her head.
“We goin’ home?”
Beau smiled, his throat tightening just a bit. “Yeah, sweetheart. We’re goin’ home.”
Y/N looked over at him, the corners of her mouth lifting as their eyes met. She saw the exhaustion in him, sure—but more than that, she saw the overwhelming relief.
Beau hadn’t let it show much, not the way the fear had hit him—but she’d seen it. In his shoulders. In his silence. In the way he’d barely stepped more than five feet from Eliza since yesterday.
And now he carried her like he wasn’t ready to let go just yet.
They reached the truck, and Beau opened the back door, gently settling Eliza into her booster seat. She didn’t argue, just leaned her head against the headrest, her lashes fluttering with sleep.
Y/N secured Caleb on the other side, brushing her fingers through his soft hair before climbing in next to him.
Beau slid into the driver’s seat, taking a quiet moment to look at his family in the rearview mirror.
They were all here.
They were okay.
Y/N reached forward, resting her hand lightly on his shoulder. “Let’s go home, Sheriff.”
He covered her hand with his own, gave it a squeeze, and nodded.
“Yeah,” he said softly. “Let’s go home.”
And this time, when they pulled out of the hospital parking lot, they weren’t racing toward help.
They were heading back to everything that mattered.
Together.
The house was dim and still, the late hour wrapping everything in a hush that only came after a long, emotional couple of days. Caleb was fast asleep in his crib, his little fists curled against his blanket. Eliza, finally home, had fallen asleep within minutes of being tucked in—exhausted, but safe. Her soft breathing from the monitor was slow and even, a sound Beau and Y/N had both paused to listen to, just to be sure.
Now, their bedroom door clicked shut behind them, and for the first time that day, the weight began to lift.
Y/N was in the middle of pulling her hair back when Beau reached for her. He didn’t say anything at first—just stepped in and wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her close, close enough for her to feel the deep breath he took as he buried his face against her shoulder.
She stilled, then melted into him, her hands finding his back.
Beau’s voice came low and rough against her skin. “I don’t think I took a full breath until we walked back in that front door.”
“I know,” Y/N murmured, pressing her cheek to his chest. “Me too.”
He held her tighter. “She scared me, Y/N. Really scared me.”
“I know,” she whispered again, her fingers stroking the back of his neck. “She scared me too.”
They stood like that for a long moment. There was nothing urgent left to do—no rushing, no monitors, no medicine or calls to be made. Just the two of them, wrapped up in the quiet of their room, with their babies safe and sleeping nearby.
Beau leaned back just enough to look at her, his hands still warm on her waist. “I just keep thinkin’… how lucky we are. I don’t take any of this for granted. Not you. Not them. Not what we’ve built.”
Y/N felt the swell of emotion in her chest at the way he looked at her—full of gratitude, wonder, and something deeper. The way he always looked at her when he needed to remember what mattered.
She smiled, brushing his hair back from his forehead. “I don’t either.”
Beau exhaled, leaning down to press his lips to hers—slow, deep, steady. Not desperate, not rushed—just full of love. Full of relief.
Beau pulled back just slightly, his hands still warm and steady at Y/N’s waist. His gaze searched hers, quiet and full, not just of relief—but something deeper. Something that had been building since the moment he saw Eliza safe again in Y/N’s arms.
“I love you,” he said, low and sure. “And I need you close tonight.”
Y/N's breath caught—not from surprise, but from the ache of how deeply she felt the same. She nodded, brushing her fingers along his jaw. “Then don’t let go.”
Beau leaned down to kiss her again, slow and tender, letting every bit of emotion he couldn’t quite put into words settle into the shape of his mouth on hers. He didn’t rush, didn’t press—just held her like the whole world had narrowed to this moment. This room. This woman.
His hands slid over her sides, deliberate and reverent, as if he was relearning the feel of her beneath his fingertips, grounding himself in the truth of her—alive, safe, his.
Y/N sighed softly into the kiss, letting him guide her toward the bed, where he sat first and gently pulled her down onto his lap. They moved like they’d done this a hundred times, like they already knew what the other needed without asking. Her arms wrapped around his neck, her legs curled around his hips, and everything else melted away.
Clothes slipped away between kisses and soft touches, the kind born not of urgency but of love—the kind that came when two people had walked through fear together and found each other still standing on the other side.
Beau kissed her belly—slow, full of quiet reverence—and whispered something into her skin she couldn’t quite hear but felt all the same. A vow. A thank-you. A prayer.
And then he was above her, around her, inside her, moving with a tenderness that made Y/N’s heart break in the best way. It wasn’t about lust tonight. It was about everything else—the miracle of their children, the breath-stealing fear of almost losing, and the overwhelming relief of still having this.
Still having each other.
Beau brushed a strand of hair back from her cheek as he rocked into her, his voice just a whisper. “You’re my whole world, darlin’. You and those babies.”
Y/N’s eyes welled, her fingers tightening against his back. “I know. And you’re ours.”
They loved slow, like they had all the time in the world, like nothing needed to be said beyond the softness of skin against skin and the shared heartbeat between them.
When it ended, they stayed tangled together, breathing quietly in the dark, his hand curled protectively over her belly once more.
And as sleep settled over them, Beau kissed her forehead and whispered, “We’re gonna be alright.”
Y/N smiled, already halfway to dreams. “Yeah. We are.”
Morning light filtered through the curtains, soft and golden, casting a warm glow over the bedroom. The kind of light that promised a fresh start.
Y/N stirred first, slowly waking in the nest of covers, her body still comfortably tangled in Beau’s. His arm rested heavy and secure over her waist, and she could feel the gentle rise and fall of his breathing, steady and calm.
She turned her head just enough to see him—lips parted slightly in sleep, brows relaxed for the first time in what felt like days.
She didn’t move.
Not until Caleb’s babbling stirred faintly through the baby monitor.
Beau blinked awake a second later. “Mornin’.”
Y/N smiled, voice low. “Mornin’, Sheriff.”
He stretched slightly but didn’t let go of her. “That was the best sleep I’ve had in a while.”
She nodded. “Same.”
They lay there for another few minutes, neither one ready to break the stillness just yet. But then the monitor crackled again, this time with a tiny, sleepy voice.
“Daddy?”
Beau sat up straighter, immediately alert. “That was Eliza.”
Y/N was already moving. “She’s awake.”
They slipped out of bed, pulling on clothes quickly, and padded down the hallway, Y/N carrying Caleb from the nursery while Beau headed to Eliza’s room.
She was sitting up against her pillows, her wolf stuffed animal tucked under one arm, her hair a tousled halo around her face.
She looked better. Still tired, still pale—but her eyes were clearer.
Beau crouched beside her bed. “Hey, wolf-child.”
Eliza blinked sleepily. “Hi, Daddy.”
“You feelin’ any better?”
She nodded slowly, then reached out. “You gonna stay home today?”
Beau hesitated, glancing toward the door as Y/N stepped into the room with Caleb on her hip.
Y/N smiled gently. “Well, that’s the question, isn’t it?”
Beau sat down on the edge of the bed, brushing a curl from Eliza’s forehead. “I planned on goin’ in… but I don’t know. Might be nice to have one more day to keep an eye on things. Make sure you’re really okay.”
Eliza leaned against his side, her voice small. “I want you to stay.”
Y/N glanced at him from across the room, lifting a brow. “Well, Sheriff?”
Beau sighed, resting a hand over Eliza’s back. “I don’t think the department’ll fall apart without me for one more day.”
Y/N smirked. “Jenny’ll keep ‘em in line.”
Beau chuckled. “That she will.”
He looked back at Eliza, then at Caleb, who was busy trying to chew on the collar of Y/N’s shirt.
His family.
All here. All safe.
He pressed a kiss to the top of Eliza’s head. “Yeah, I’ll stay.”
Eliza smiled and leaned into him, her body still heavy with the last weight of recovery.
And Beau knew, without a shred of doubt, that he’d made the right call.
Some days, the badge could wait.
Because this—these quiet, hard-earned mornings—were what he fought for.
The sheriff’s badge stayed on the dresser. The work boots by the door stayed right where they were. Beau made good on his promise—not just to Eliza, but to himself—to stay home and slow down.
The morning passed gently.
After breakfast—toast, scrambled eggs, and little cups of applesauce—Beau took over kitchen duty while Y/N sat curled on the couch with Caleb, reading him a board book while he babbled and gnawed on the corner.
Eliza laid stretched out in her soft pajamas, her blanket wrapped around her legs, her wolf plush tucked tight to her side. Her cheeks were still a little pink, but the fever had stayed down, and she’d even managed a few small bites of breakfast under close observation from both parents.
Beau drifted from one to the other all morning—filling sippy cups, fetching cold compresses, folding a blanket at the foot of the couch only to unfold it seconds later when Eliza needed it again.
At one point, Eliza tilted her head toward him and asked, “Daddy, you sure you're not gonna go to work?”
He looked over from where he was balancing Caleb on his knee and gave her a firm nod. “I’m exactly where I need to be today, baby girl.”
Y/N caught that look—tender and full of something deeper—and her heart squeezed. She didn’t say anything, just reached out and ran her fingers through Beau’s hair as she passed, pressing a kiss to the crown of his head as he held Caleb close.
Later, when Eliza dozed off again on the couch, Beau gently moved her wolf closer to her and pulled the blanket back over her small frame.
“She’s so small when she’s still,” he murmured, standing next to Y/N as they watched their daughter sleep.
Y/N slipped her hand into his. “Yeah. And she’s got you wrapped around her finger.”
Beau gave a soft smile. “She’s got me and then some.”
The afternoon was quiet in the best way. They kept the TV low, rotated turns holding Caleb while the other slipped into short moments of rest.
Beau made grilled cheese for lunch—this time, with no toast stuck to the wall—and they all ate in the living room, the sound of forks scraping gently against plates a quiet rhythm of domestic calm.
By evening, the clouds outside had thickened, and soft rain began tapping at the windows.
Y/N stood at the kitchen sink, looking out at the yard, a mug of tea cradled in her hands. Beau came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, his chin resting on her shoulder.
“Think the storm’ll hold till morning?” he asked softly.
“Doesn’t matter,” Y/N said. “We’ve got everything we need right here.”
Beau kissed her cheek. “That we do.”
Behind them, Caleb let out a delighted screech from his playmat, and Eliza called out faintly from the couch asking if her applesauce was ready.
Beau didn’t move right away. He just held Y/N a second longer, eyes closed, breathing her in.
He had chosen to stay home today.
And it had reminded him—this was what made all the rest of it worth it.
This love.
This peace.
This family.
The rain had settled into a soft, steady rhythm by the time the house began to wind down. The glow of the living room lamps spilled warm across the floor, and the scent of lavender soap lingered in the air—courtesy of two freshly bathed children and a particularly splashy bath time led by Beau.
Eliza was in fresh pajamas, her curls slightly damp and frizzing at the edges. She leaned sleepily against Beau’s side on the couch, her wolf plush clutched in one arm while she half-listened to the book he was reading.
Y/N sat across from them in the rocker with Caleb tucked in her arms, his little green eyes blinking up at her, heavy with sleep. He was warm and soft, his tiny fingers curled around hers as she hummed to him quietly between page turns.
Beau glanced up and caught her gaze. The way she looked in that moment—barefoot, holding their baby, eyes soft and tired but full of peace—nearly undid him.
He turned back to Eliza, keeping his voice low and steady as he read the last few lines of her bedtime story. Her head eventually drifted down onto his arm, her eyelids fluttering closed.
Y/N rose carefully, easing Caleb up against her shoulder as she stepped beside Beau.
“Think she’s out?” she whispered.
Beau nodded. “Nearly. Let me carry her.”
He stood, gathering Eliza gently into his arms, and she stirred only faintly before settling her head against his chest, letting out a small sigh.
Y/N followed behind him down the hallway, rocking Caleb gently as he fought the last of his wakefulness.
Beau tucked Eliza into bed, pulling the covers up over her and settling the worn wolf plush beside her. He kissed her forehead, brushing a curl back.
“Night, baby girl,” he whispered.
Y/N laid Caleb down next, adjusting the blanket over his small frame and brushing a kiss to the top of his head. He let out a soft sigh, thumb in his mouth, already slipping into sleep.
Back in their room, the house finally quiet again, Beau toed off his boots and tugged his shirt over his head, then crossed the room to Y/N, who stood by the window, arms crossed loosely as she looked out at the soft streaks of rain under the porch light.
He slid his arms around her from behind, pressing his chest to her back.
“Today was better,” he murmured.
Y/N leaned back into him, nodding. “Much better.”
Beau kissed her temple. “We needed it.”
They stood like that for a long moment, holding each other in the hush between storms and sunrises.
A quiet house. Sleeping children.
The weight of love, and the kind of peace that only came after the chaos.
It was nothing spectacular. Just a bedtime routine.
But to Beau, it felt like everything.

*Waaaaawaaaawaaawawawwaaaaaaa*
The infant’s cry wakes the two men from their deep slumber.
“I’ll go check on her,” Tommy kisses Buck on the temple, “I’ll come get you if we need anything, okay?” He leaves their warm, comfortable bed to tend to their baby daughter.
Buck wants to jump out and protest, it’s her daughter too, but Tommy’s the one on paternity leave now, while he himself has a shift next morning. Light duty, all thanks to Bobby. Tommy, on the other hand, has a job that doesn’t allow a single lapse of judgment, so he agrees to take time off first until both new parents settle into a routine, then Buck can take over as the primary caregiver. It’s been working fine for them so far.
Except tonight.
Buck might as well get up, since his daughter refuses to stop crying.
“Hey, everything alright?” Buck asks, still half asleep.
“Um, I don’t know. Her diaper wasn’t wet, I changed it anyway, but she’s still crying,” Tommy gently rocks her in his arms, “maybe she’s hungry? Can you go get her formula?”
“We’ve just fed her…” Buck looks at the clock on the nightstand, “2 hours ago. Is she hungry already? Never mind, I’ll go make some real quick.”
Buck stares at the digital water heater with a blank expression. It’s an extremely premium product in both price and functionality. With this gadget, you don’t have to test water temperature on the back of your hand anymore. It measures the air in the room, then calculate the safe and perfect temperature, down to the decimal, for maximum extraction of nutrients from the baby formula.
Buck is rather proud of his purchase, but at the moment, all he wants, all he can think of, is some sweet, sweet, shut eye.
“Here you go,” Buck hands Tommy the warm bottle. Relief washes over him when the infant latches onto the bottle’s rubber tip, but it soon fades away when she turns away and continues crying after a few gulps.
“Shhhhh, shhh, it’s okay,” Tommy coos at the baby, then shoves the bottle back into Buck’s hand.
“Do you think she’s sick?” Buck frowns. He can’t bare the thought of his precious child feeling sick without the ability to express it with words.
Tommy puts his lips on the infant’s forehead, “no, I don’t think so, she doesn’t feel hot.”
Buck relaxes.
“But get the infrared thermometer anyway, just in case,” Tommy demands, their daughter still wailing in his arms.
Buck nods and leaves on his way to find that thermometer, gifted by his sister. ‘You’ll appreciate modern science once you realize you don’t have to lube up a glass thermometer and hold down your child to take temperature anymore,’ Maddie said.
Their home is a mess, ever since they adopted their baby girl. Everyone around them with child-raising experience tells them it’s completely normal. But it’s time like this, when Buck can’t find the exact thing he knows is around, that he wants to disregard all of their advice.
“Ah! Found it!” Buck whispers to himself triumphantly, waving the infrared thermometer in the air a little.
It’s only now that Buck picks up the absolute silence.
“Ahhh, ah, ouch.”
Then silence again.
Buck rushes back into the bedroom.
He sees Tommy sitting up in bed, their daughter fiercely sucking on his dry nipple.
“Shhhhhhhh,” Tommy shushes Buck, “don’t ask me why, but it works, so don’t you dare startle her.”
“Okay, but I’m taking her temperature anyway,” Buck whispers back and points the thermometer at the infant’s forehead. “All good. She’s a bit cold if anything.”
Putting the appliance aside, Buck joins Tommy in bed again.
“Does it hurt?”
“A bit. At least she’s not crying anymore. Go back to sleep, Evan, you need it.”
“Sure,” Buck gives Tommy a chaste kiss on the lip before climbing back into his blanket. “Hey, look, she’s finally asleep. I guess she just wanted the warmth and security of her father…”
Tommy smiles, carrying his daughter back to her crib.
“…her father’s voluptuous chest,” Buck laughs.
Tommy returns from dropping off the baby, “it’s gonna be you in a month.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m looking forward to it,” Buck says before going back to sleep, “I can’t wait for her to grow up to be as strong and smart as you.”
“And I can’t wait for her to grow up to be as kind and brave as you.”
Special thanks to @louciferssacrament for their support❤️

Measuring Temperature by Color
There are two primary methods of measuring temperature that rely on the color of an object: pyrometers and liquid crystal thermometers.
The first relies on a principal known as black-body radiation and the incandescence of an object, the same principal that allows people to judge how hot a fire is based on its temperature. All objects give off infrared radiation and pyrometers use said radiation to determine the object's temperature. These thermometers are remote sensing thermometers, meaning that they do not need to be in contact with the object or area of interest to measure the temperature.
Liquid crystal thermometers rely on a different principle known as thermochromism. These thermometers are contact thermometers and, because of the nature of thermochromism, do not hold/record the measured temperature for long and are not digital or electronic. The thermochromism exhibited by some liquid crystals is also used in other applications, including mood rings.

Water Quality Test: Check for TDS < 50ppm and pH 6.5-8.0
Pressure Verification: Ensure 40-60 PSI static pressure
Route Mapping: Maintain ≤2 right-angle bends for optimal flow
2. Precision Pipe Preparation
Measure with laser distance meter (add 10% for thermal expansion)
Cut using rotary pipe cutter (prevents oval deformation)
Deburr internal/external edges (reduces turbulence by 40%)
3. Military-Grade Connection System
Apply thread sealant (Loctite 577 recommended)
Use two-clamp method at each joint
Torque fittings to 25-30 N∙m (use click-type wrench)
Case Study: A Canadian client reduced leaks by 92% after switching to this connection method.

Advanced Testing Protocol
Three-Phase Quality Assurance:
Initial Pressure Test:
1.5x operating pressure for 30 minutes
Check for ≥0.5 PSI drop (indicates leaks)
Thermal Cycling:
Alternate between 5°C and 50°C water
5 complete cycles
Flow Verification:
Measure output at cleaner inlet (should be 1.8-2.2 GPM)
Check for laminar flow (no visible turbulence)
