I haven't played any of the Tactics games, but I have played VII, VIII, and IX, and they're easily my favorite games in the entire franchise. (Granted, I got stuck while playing Final Fantasy VI and I lost interest in Final Fantasy XIII while I was playing it... but, that's besides the point.)

suddenly out of the blue remembering my first ever interaction with FFXIV in any form:

...it was seeing Y'shtola in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.

Which isn't strange in and of itself, it's a crossover fighting game, that's its main marketing purpose. What's particular about this though is that I was kinda into the storyline of the Dissidia subseries and I played NT for the story mode, which... was honestly kind of a disappointment and incredibly frustrating to get through, capped off by a final boss that was so immensely frustrating and felt completely unfair, utterly destroying me no matter which combination of characters I used.

Eventually I gave up and looked up a guide, and at least one or two said the winning strat for the final boss was simple: use Y'shtola. I hadn't played as her even once. She was cute in the cutscenes she appeared in, but I didn't know anything else. I was desperate enough after something like thirty game overs to give it a shot, though.

I have to emphasize I did no training, no serious assessment of her abilities and equipment - the game did have some kind of mechanic to quickly level characters without having used them, so I brought her up to snuff and hit optimize on her equipment and brought her in.

The first time I ever played Y'shtola in NT, I completely rocked the final boss's shit on my first try. Because it turned out it didn't have much of a counter for long-range projectile combat, and she was one of the strongest of those.

So yeah the game was kind of meh, but it did give me a very memorable first impression of Y'shtola Rhul and Final Fantasy XIV. It probably played a little into eventually finally deciding to give XIV a shot, which has completely changed my life for the better. 😊

bonus fun fact, with a spoiler warning for NT's final boss's identity under the cut:

that final boss is Shinryu!

which actually made it pretty hilarious when I made it to the end of Stormblood, I just kept thinking "man Y'shtola should be able to solo this mfer." 😄

realising now that Y'shtola in Dissidia NT's story mode was blind the whole time, which makes the scene where she points out Squall is going the wrong way (because he somehow completely missed the tower in the middle of an open desert) even funnier
