The Man Upstairs (1958)
"Miss Grey! You keep saying that you're to blame, that you want to help! Well now's your chance, do you want to help or don't you?"
"Yes, of course I want -"
"Well, then tell them the story yourself, it will help them to understand better."
#the man upstairs#1958#british cinema#alun falconer#robert dunbar#don chaffey#richard attenborough#bernard lee#donald houston#dorothy alison#virginia maskell#kenneth griffith#patricia jessel#alfred burke#charles houston#maureen connell#amy dalby#walter hudd#edward judd#patrick jordan#within its own specific context (as one of the glut of cheapy brit thrillers that were produced in the late 50s and early 60s by budget#filmmakers) this is something close to a masterpiece. shot in a naturalistic style without music‚ dissolves‚ and unfolding in real time#we follow Attenborough's troubled lodger as one sleepless night and an incidental reaction snowballs so out of control that by the end of#the film literally even the army have become involved. it's a fascinating study of a situation spiralling way beyond the control of any of#the parties involved‚ but it's just as notable for its sharply critical view of the police approach to handling a case involving a mental#health crisis (something that still feels horribly relevant some 65 years later). Bernard Lee is repugnant as the aggressive police#inspector who seems dead set on escalating events and cares nothing for Attenborough's vulnerable stranger; Dickie himself is astonishing#but takes a back seat for the second half as the film moves to concentrate on his fellow lodgers (a narrow array that might be meant to#represent society as a whole‚ one of the only parts of the film that doesn't quite work). a surfeit of great brit character actors all pull#their weight‚ but it's Australian Dot Alison who shines out as the tentative voice of kindness and understanding

I know you've probably gotten this question a lot, but what books do you recommend as an entry to American politics? I just turned 18 (a week after the midterms 😭) and I've tried to keep up with politics but quite frankly I was homeschooled and my mom is super conservative/conspiracy theorist, so I've never had any political influence besides Far-right and Chronically Online Leftist. I want to be able to make informed decisions but there's so much out there I don't even know where to start. Any book recommendations you have about politics, conspiracies, social issues, or otherwise related would be helpful!! (P.s. if you've already made this list and I missed it, feel free to just link back to that! I know you're busy)

An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States, by Roxane Dunbar-Ortiz

On July 20th 1332 Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray and Regent of Scotland, died at Musselburgh.
I love stories that you can relate to, to this day and the death of Thomas Randolph is certainly one, he ties in with a lot of other stories during the era but will leave the wee bit I mean till the end.
Randolph was a nephew to Robert the Bruce. His father was Sir Thomas Randolph of Stichill, Roxburghshire, and his mother was a half-sister to Robert the Bruce, being a daughter of Marjory, Countess of Carrick and her first husband Adam of Kilconquhar. Marjory was the mother of Robert by her second marriage.
He had a very active military life, being present at many battles such as Methven, Line Water and Bannockburn. At the battle of Methven in 1306 he was captured by the English forces and changed his allegiance to Edward I, perhaps to save his own life. He was then captured by the Scottish at Line Water in 1308 and apparently argued with his uncle Robert the Bruce, but all was well between them by 1314 when Randolph helped with the siege of Edinburgh castle.
At Bannockburn he played a crucial role for the Scottish side. He was in charge of the Central Division or Vanguard and there is a place known as “Randolph’s Field” after his men formed a circle with spears outwards at that place.
In the 1320s he played an important role in negotiations with both France and the Papacy and remained one of the King’s most trusted advisors for the rest of Robert’s reign.
When Robert the Bruce died in 1329 Randolph was made the Guardian or Regent for David II. The poet Barbour describes him as “Middle height, broad face, pleasant and fair”.
He married Isabella Stewart, the daughter of Sir John Stewart, who died at Falkirk and Margaret de Bonkyl, they had at least four children, Thomas, Agnes, Isabel and John. Agnes, “The Black Agnes”, of the siege fame, when the castle of Dunbar was being attacked by the English.
Anyway apart from all that Randolph had been ill for a time in Musselburgh and the townsfolk are meant to have been very diligent in attending to him and taking care of his remains when he passed away, that the next Regent Donald, Earl of Mar bestowed on the Burgh the origin of its name “The Honest Toun” as a "toun of honest fowk” for their care of the dying Regent, so when you’re next passing through Musselburgh and see the sign, you can remember the story to tell everyone!

Lucy Carmichael also coached a prize fighter (played by Don Rickles) in a 1967 episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Henry Taylor (Math) played by William Windom in “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (1962). Although Jerry calls him ‘Old Man Taylor’, he is a new young bachelor recently relocated to Danfield from San Francisco. Donald Randolph plays the History teacher
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Mike Howden plays a Ski Instructor in “Someone’s On the Ski Lift with Dinah” (1971).

When a shaman decides the world must end and all must die, he performs a ritual that releases a very large and murderous Desmodus rotundus colony, commonly known as a guano-load of vampire bats! Nightwing (1979) is the only venture into horror for director Arthur Hiller and writer Martin Cruz Smith. Even so, the 70s Grue-Crew are bat-guano-crazy over their movie. Between the story, the bats, and the cast (Strother Martin’s in the house!), there is plenty of fuel for their talkabout!
At the time of this writing, Nightwing (1979) is available to stream from YouTube and PPV from Prime and AppleTV. The film is available on Blu-ray formatted physical media as part of a double-feature with Shadow of the Hawk (1976) from Mill Creek Entertainment.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Jeff, will be Craze (1974), directed by Freddie Francis and sporting a bunch of Oscar winners. It’s got to be great, right? Right? Why are you laughing?

“Liam, I brought the…” Theo paused, stopping in the doorway, the bags with Chinese take-out that was still warm and Liam loved so much hanging from his hands. He stood still, puzzled, a frown clouding his face as he looked around. “What are you doing?”
“Ssshh!” Liam hissed, waving his arm in Theo’s general direction in a way that wasn’t at all suspicious.  Theo narrowed his eyes, placing the bags down on the table with plates thankfully already on it, like he’d asked, and stepped closer.
It took him a second to register what he was looking at, exactly. But when he did, his head snapped over to Liam, beside him, like he couldn’t quite believe that he’d really ended up dating this boy. “What the hell is that?” His voice came out dry.
“Sssh, Donald just wanted to go for a swim!” Liam exclaimed excitedly, his eyes shining bright as he looked over at Theo, slapping him and pushing his shoulder in anticipation before going right back and pulling him closer again.
“Donald?” Theo didn’t know whether to laugh or to roll his eyes exaggeratedly at him. A snort slipped past his lips.
“It’s a duck, he’s white, it’s a male duck! How else are we supposed to call him!?” Liam called, the two of them looking down simultaneously at the sink where the duck was currently swimming in the water that was filled up in it.
“Alright, fine!” Theo called over him, cutting him off, grumbling as he finally gave in with Liam’s silliness. He still couldn’t believe this was the boy he’d chose to spend his days with. “But realize I don’t withhold much here, alright? You want a pet duck, fine. You want to name him Donald, fine. But did he really have to go in there?”
Liam pouted. “In a bucket with water he would splash the whole floor wet.”
“I think you overestimate how wild ducks are.”
Liam said nothing, and Theo followed his lead, staying silent for a few moments. They looked back down at Donald, and Theo felt as though the little animal was proving his point exactly; swimming in circles and quaking happily and in pleasant-filled delight. Something about it touched something inside Theo and warmed his chest; looking over at Liam, his eyes shining and twinkling for the duck, only made that grow.
“Have you tried a bath towel or mat?”
Liam tore his gaze away from Donald, meeting Theo’s eyes, something dazed in his gaze, as if he needed a moment to turn back to reality. “What?”
A flutter swirled through Theo’s stomach, shivering, eyes locking on Liam’s burning blue ones, always so full of feeling, so alive, and something shuddered in him. “A mat. So Donald can swim somewhere more pleasant, he doesn’t have to be stuck in this old sink and we can keep an eye on him. We can feed Donald from there as well.”
Theo witnessed the exact moment Liam pulled back from the tense moment between them, palpable in the air in the room, his eyes lighting up and brightly twinkling. A smile pulled at Theo’s lips. “That’s not a bad idea!”
Theo grinned. “See? I do not only have bad ideas,” and he leaned down to get the bucket from the cupboard underneath the sink, making himself miss the warm way Liam smiled down at him, looking at him.
Carefully, when Theo stood back up, they reached out to grab the small duck. It involved a lot of splashing, reaching and trying again, the duck quaking distressed a few times, but when they finally had him and lowered him in the bucket, Donald squealed in delight. Waving his wings a few times, back and forth, effectively splashing Liam and Theo wet.
Theo stared down, the damp stain on his shirt. Unimpressed.
“He’s happy!” Liam exclaimed excitedly, once they looked at Donald after they put the bucket down on a bath towel in the living room, a little bowl with bread crumbs on the towel next to the bucket, and yes, Theo had to admit with warmth, that he did look quite happy, and a pet made it feel more like home.
“Okay, come on, now we can go eat. While it’s still warm,” he said, wrapping his arm around Liam’s waist, leading him over to the table where the food was indeed still warm. From the bright look Liam shot him from beside him, sending a flutter through Theo’s stomach, he could tell that the younger wolf was hungry too, and would do no more suggestions about Donald with a childlike and excited wonder that Theo secretly actually didn’t mind at all.
He appreciated every single one of Liam’s passionate ramblings, usually in combination with breathless broken sentences, but luckily, because it was Liam, he never had to wait long for the next rambling.
“Donald should get his own towel. And then, all we have to do is get a Daisy!”
Theo thought he might choke on his eggroll, as the meaning of the sentence hit him, sliding into a coughing fit.
