#Duffy's cut

[morbidology]

Duffy’s Cut is the name for a stretch of railroad track around 30 miles west of Philadelphia, United States. It was built in 1832 by 57 Irish immigrants that had been hired by railroad contractor Phillip Duffy. Less than two months later, all 57 were believed to have died during the second cholera pandemic. They were all buried in a mass grave alongside the railroad track.

In 2004, the grave was excavated and it was discovered that a number of the bodies showed signs of blunt-force trauma, suggesting that they had been murdered. More recent studies suggested that the men may have been murdered by vigilantes who feared that the illness would spread.
