I'm back, but where was I?
Well, first in the US for work, and then at Series Mania, a big TV series festival. I saw lots of good shows, attended some great masterclasses (if by any chance you've heard about Peter Mullan destroying Kevin Spacey, that was there...).
Here were some highlights:
I'm taller than The Thing?! I could have sworn that Michael Chiklis, of Fantastic Four and The Shield fame was a giant! I'm shockitty shocked. Still scary as Hell when his clear blue eyes look right into your soul, but a tiny bit less scary than I thought LOL
Danny Pinto is barely any taller but damn is that man charming.
They were both there for Chris Brancato's new show: Hotel Cocaine. Looks pretty promising. Very 70's LOL.
Zal Batmanglij, co-creator of the OA was a big fan of Bioman as a kid. It definitely influenced the idea of the dance in the OA. I bet you'll see that dance differently from now on XD
Among the best shows we've seen: Rematch, telling the Chess match and rematch, between Gary Kasparov and Deep Blue.
And some French shows you all will probably never see.
Were present at the festival Patricia Arquette, Alex Wolff and Jeremy Irons. What do they have all in common? They were all lucky enough to work with Gabriel Byrne. It's totally irrelevant but it makes me smile.
Jeremy Irons, who will always be Aramis to me, will appear in yet another Dumas adaptation: The Count of Monte-Cristo this time. The guy is hilarious. Irons, not Monte-Cristo.
Edmond Dantes is Sam Claflin. They showed a trailer for the upcoming show and it looks pretty decent. They promised a faithful adaptation. At the very least, there'll be eye candies.
Also saw a panel for the upcoming French Zorro series starring Jean Dujardin. It's gonna be a sort of comedy sequel to the Disney show. Not sure about how I feel about it, still. I love Jean, but I don't love him.

i went to a used book sale today... procured:
railroad color history: new york central railroad (brian solomon & mike schafer) — i'm not actually that into trains but it appealed to me.
the complete guide to the soviet union (jennifer louis & victor louis) — travel guide from 1980
an anthology including the big sleep (raymond chandler), "the undignified melodrama of the bone of contention" (dorothy l. sayers), "the arrow of god" (leslie charteris), "i can find my way out" (ngaio marsh), instead of evidence (rex stout), "rift in the loot" (stuart palmer & craig rice), "the man who explained miracles" (john dickson carr), & rebecca (daphne du maurier) (i already have this one..) — it's volume 2 of something (a treasury of great mysteries) which annoys me but whatever
an anthology including "godmother tea" (selena anderson), "the apartment" (t. c. boyle), "a faithful but melancholy account of several barbarities lately committed" (jason brown), "sibling rivalry" (michael byers), "the nanny" (emma cline), "halloween" (mariah crotty), "something street" (carolyn ferrell), "this is pleasure" (mary gaitskill), "in the event" (meng jin), "the children" (andrea lee), "rubberdust" (sarah thankam mathews), "it's not you" (elizabeth mccracken), "liberté" (scott nandelson), "howl palace" (leigh newman), "the nine-tailed fox explains" (jane pek), "the hands of dirty children" (alejandro puyana), "octopus vii" (anna reeser), "enlightenment" (william pei shih), "kennedy" (kevin wilson), & "the special world" (tiphanie yanique) — i guess they're all short stories published in 2020 by usamerican/canadian authors
an anthology including the death of ivan ilyich (leo tolstoy) (i have already read this one..), the beast in the jungle (henry james), heart of darkness (joseph conrad), seven who were hanged (leonid andreyev), abel sánchez (miguel de unamuno), the pastoral symphony (andré gide), mario and the magician (thomas mann), the old man (william faulkner), the stranger (albert camus), & agostino (alberto moravia)
the ambassadors (henry james)
the world book desk reference set: book of nations — it's from 1983 so this is kind of a history book...
yet another fiction anthology......... including the general's ring (selma lagerlöf), "mowgli's brothers" (rudyard kipling), "the gift of the magi" (o. henry) (i have already read this one..), "lord mountdrago" (w. somerset maugham), "music on the muscatatuck" (jessamyn west), "the pacing goose" (jessamyn west), "the birds" (daphne du maurier), "the man who lived four thousand years" (alexandre dumas), "the pope's mule" (alphonse daudet), "the story of the late mr. elvesham" (h. g. wells), "the blue cross" (g. k. chesterton), portrait of jennie (robert nathan), "la grande bretèche" (honoré de balzac), "love's conundrum" (anthony hope), "the great stone face" (nathaniel hawthorne), "germelshausen" (friedrich gerstäcker), "i am born" (charles dickens), "the legend of sleepy hollow" (washington irving), "the age of miracles" (melville davisson post), "the long rifle" (stewart edward white), "the fall of the house of usher" (edgar allan poe) (i have already read this one..), the voice of bugle ann (mackinlay kantor), the bridge of san luis rey (thornton wilder), "basquerie" (eleanor mercein kelly), "judith" (a. e. coppard), "a mother in mannville" (marjorie kinnan rawlings), "kerfol" (edith wharton), "the last leaf" (o. henry), "the bloodhound" (arthur train), "what the old man does is always right" (hans christian anderson), the sea of grass (conrad richter), "the sire de malétroit's door" (robert louis stevenson), "the necklace" (guy de maupassant) (i have already read this one..), "by the waters of babylon" (stephen vincent benét), a. v. laider (max beerbohm), "the pillar of fire" (percival wilde), "the strange will" (edmond about), "the hand at the window" (emily brontë) (i have already read this one..), & "national velvet" (enid bagnold) — why are seven of these chapters of novels....? anyway fun fact one of the compilers here also worked on the aforementioned mystery anthology. also anyway Why did i bother to write all that ☹️
fundamental problems of marxism (georgi plekhanov) — book about dialectical/historical materialism which is published here as the first volume of something (marxist library) which is kind of odd to me tbh
one last (thankfully tiny) anthology including le père goriot (honoré de balzac) & eugénie grandet (honoré de balzac)

Do u have any book and movie recommendations?
sooooo many. you might regret asking.
I love books very very much, just in case you didn't know, so let me fire off at random some of my all time faves with and without blurbs.
poetry: Devotions, Mary Oliver | No Matter the Wreckage, Sarah Kay | Leaves of Grass, Whitman | Post Colonial Love Poem, Natalie Diaz
nonfiction:
My Life in France, Julia Child --- her memoir of moving to France with her husband post WWII and her discovery of cooking and deciding to write her cookbook and it's so charming and so her and it's just a delight
Open Me Carefully, Emily Dickinson --- a chronological collection of letters, poems, and letter-poems Emily sent to her lover sister-in-law Susan Dickinson. it's intimate, playful, kind, passionate, and the editors do a great job of putting it all together. and you read it and just know that you are only skimming the surface of the deep love these two women had for each other i gotta lie down
What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding, Kristin Newman --- funny sexy travel memoir by a TV writer who spent her hiatus months in the aughts summers by traveling solo and having whirlwind romances and also her reconciliation between being the woman who can't be tied down but also wanting to build a life with a partner.
The Real Traviata, Rene Weis --- an opera book because me. a biography about Marie Duplessis, the French woman who inspired Dumas to write La Dame aux Camellias and therefore Verdi's Traviata and THEREFORE Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge. she had by the most objective accounts a difficult and short life full of fear and illness and abuse but also full of strength and color and love and I found it really moving.
fiction: aka the novels I am thinking most about right now.
House of the Spirits, Isabel Allende --- an all time favorite. a historical, multigenerational epic that left me staring at the ceiling after finishing it. and cemented Allende's place as one of my fave authors
The Sentence, Louise Erdrich --- it's about ghosts and independent bookstores and indigenous women and community and love and trust and the pandemic. great novel.
Sex and Vanity, Kevin Kwan --- people are always looking for who they should crown the modern Jane Austen, and it's him. it's kevin kwan. this is a modern remix of A Room with a View and it is funny and sexy and sweet and was a delight to read.
Beautiful World, Where Are You, Sally Rooney --- my favorite of hers. I love how the chapters of story are interspersed with emails between the two leads. yes there's romance, but the real center of this story is the friendship between the two women.
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, Ocean Vuong --- entirely lives up to the tumblr hype. possibly exceeds the tumblr hype. I told my best friend to read this book. which she did. then scolded me because while she agrees it's beautiful it's also so heartbreaking. truly some of the most beautiful prose I've ever read. I checked it out from the library but i really want a copy of my own to mark up.
Bright Young Women, Jessica Knoll (out Oct. 3rd) --- i got this ARC at the librarian convention. I'm in the middle of it right now but I have to talk it up because it is sooooo good. It's about women who meet because they have the worst possible thing in common: their best friend was murdered by the same serial killer. It hops around between the '70s and the present day, reads like a thriller, and the thesis is really about destroying the myth of the criminal mastermind, a la all those true crime docs about dahmer and bundy. I'm almost halfway through and the murderer is only referred to as "The Defendant." It's about taking the narrative away from him, the universal defendant, and recentering it around the exceptional women whose lives he ended and/or destroyed. Again, please check it out when it comes out this fall. But be forewarned that the subject matter is dark.
as for MOVIES, well, if I tried to make a list like the one above I'd be here all day, so why don't I just list a handful that I consider central to understanding who I am as a person:
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Life of Brian
The Blues Brothers
The Princess Diaries 1 AND 2
Little Women (2019)
Juno
The Holiday
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Star Wars, the OG and prequel trilogies
and, last winter I stumbled across The Four Seasons starring Alan Alda and Carol Burnett, and I thought it was delightful.

Hartley heads Toyota front row lockout over Ferraris in the Algarve | World Endurance Championship
Brendon Hartley secured Toyota their first pole position of the WEC season ahead of the Six Hours of Portimao, while Kamui Kobayashi ensured a front-row lockout for the manufacturer. Hartley’s best time of a 1’30.171 was enough to secure pole for the number eight car, two tenths quicker than the number seven. The two Ferrari 499Ps of numbers 50 and 51 will start behind the Toyotas, both over 1.5s slower than the pole time. When the session began, the Glickenhaus car driven by Romain Dumas was the first car to set a representative time, before the number eight Toyota driven by Brendon Hartley jumped immediately to the top of the times with a 1’30.480 – easily the quickest time of the weekend. The two Ferraris of number 50 with Nicklas Nielsen and James Calado’s number 51 car could not get within a second of the Toyota, before the second number seven Toyota piloted by Kamui Kobayashi moved to second, just over a quarter of a second slower than its team mate. With less than five laps remaining, Hartley pulled the number eight Toyota into the pit lane to end his session early. He was soon joined by Kobayashi in the second Toyota, leaving the number eight car on provisional pole position. Any threat of Toyota being ousted from the front row quickly evaporated as the two Ferraris also retired to the pit lane, joined by the two Porsche Penskes and the Cadillac car. As the final two minutes ticked down, only the two non-hybrid hypercars of the Glickenhaus and the Vanwall remained on track. Frederic Makowiecki ventured out in the number five Porsche with under two minutes remaining, but did not have enough time to begin a final flying lap. As the chequered flag flew, the number eight Toyota was confirmed on pole position, with Kobayashi’s best lap in the number seven car securing an all-Toyota front row. The two Ferraris of number 50 and 51 will start third and fourth on the grid, with the two Porsche Penskes split by the number 94 Peugeot behind. The Cadillac car will start from eighth on the grid ahead of the second number 93 Peugeot, with the two non-hybrid hypercars of Glickenhaus and Vanwall completing the hypercar order. Prema took pole position in the LMP2 class with the number 63 car, but are under investigation by the stewards after receiving emergency rear bodywork repairs in the pit lane while waiting for the session to begin. In GTE Am, Corvette will start on pole after Ben Keating set the quickest time in the sole C8.R in the field, two tenths of a second faster than the Iron Dames Ferrari. I'll give you the next part....evil laughter....
May the God of vengeance now yield me His place to punish the wicked."
Alexander Dumas
Shawn and the Undertaker were the last people to enter the barn and stood at the back. The crowd was clearly riled up with bets being placed on "the kid" to last at least five minutes against the "Cobra".
Both men watched in horror as a young boy was dragged into the rink and shoved to the ground. The boy valiantly got to his feet and took a step backward in fear when the Cobra got into the ring.
"I'm going to enjoy hurting you little boy."
The Undertaker started to mentally curse when he saw Shawn's eyes. They were completely blue and the air became super charged with electricity.
"I don't think so," Shawn replied coldly, his voice easily carrying over the crowd. He started walking towards the rink, shoving bikers out of his way. Blue and white lights started racing across the ceiling. The Undertaker charged after him.
"KEVIN! I NEED YOU RIGHT NOW!"
"You gonna fight me over this kid?" The Cobra sneered as Shawn effortlessly vaulted into the ring. The crowd started cheering wildly thinking it was part of the show. No one noticed that Shawn's hands started to glow white or a high pitched humming that was growing louder with each second.
"Yes," Shawn smiled with too many teeth. He locked eyes with the Undertaker. "Protect the boy." The Undertaker grabbed the kid and was gone in the blink of an eye.
The lights suddenly exploded, plunging the barn into near darkness except for Shawn who was bathed in a fiery white light. He smiled gently as the audience started to back away in fear.
"What the fuck are you?"
"Vengeance."
Shawn slammed his hands together, and a new sun lit up the night sky.
No because I feel like this is how Shawn actually saw himself everytime he stepped in the ring with anyone bigger than him. (So everyone. Including rey. Because yes, rey is shorter but his muscle mass? Man is fucking huge compared to shawn)

2022 spring wrap up
Disclaimer: I live in the Southern Hemisphere
Endgame: The Complete Zero Line Chronicles, by James Frey ⭐️⭐️
It was an okay book. Not so much related to the main series, apart from the fact that the characters here knew about the Endgame and are trying to stop it. But honestly in the main series it was only casually cited so I don't know how it's going to be related to the end of the main series, apart from the fact that - yes - the Endgame has to be stopped.
Toda Mafalda, by Quino ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The greatest of the greatest. The one that made me who I am. The south american icon. She's the legend. She IS the moment. A MUST READ!!
L'Aiguille Creuse, by Maurice Leblanc ⭐️⭐️
I was very complexed by this book and I'm beginning to wonder if I'm feeling like this towards the Arsène Lupin series because of the translation, since I'm reading the books from different publishers. Only time will tell. It had a interesting premise, tho.
China Rich Girlfriend, by Kevin Kwan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'm living for this series and only for it. I loved how we are now introduced to the mainland Chinese high class and how they can be more frivolous than the Singaporean one. But at the same time it shows how different two cultures can be, even though they came from the same root. It was lighthearted, funny, and filled with east asian pop culture references.
Minha quase irmã: Bernardo, by Mônica Meirelles ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was afraid of reading this one and being worst then the first. But it was a great surprise for me how the main character worked out his problems. I would even say I liked more this book than the first one, because here we see how much the male lead matures and grow. And I really like this kind of book with lots of character development!
The Pirate Balthasar #5-7, by Dedasaur ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Aaah great GREAT GREAT!!! All the sisters had their happy ending and we are now moving to a more deep layer in Kane's story and leveling up the mediterranean environment and fantastical mood of the comic <3
La Dame aux Camélias, by Alexandre Dumas fils ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I… don't know exactly (till now) how to feel about this particular book. It was nice to read and it had a easy flow. But it was also very predictable. In the end I think I gave it 3 stars more because how well the author rights and make you dive deep into the story, then the actual story lmao
Oscar et la dame rose, by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It's a very simple story. Kinda christmasy. Written by an child. And very VERY very emotional end. From the start you know what's going to happen, but since we are reading it in the pov of a child, he's kinda processing his life and living every life stage as fast as he can. This was definitely one of my favourite books of the year.
Flamingos, by Clary Avelino ⭐️⭐️
Ok, this one is easy to read, which was great because I was needing to read something easier at the time. But I believe it could be better developed. It's a short book where the main character feels very horny for the male lead, who is a great guy, that had very actual problems (that you will get if you lived in Brazil in the last 4 years), but… The main character also had her own stuff but I didn't felt it was well developed. Or developed at all. There's also other characters who start having a fling together, but we don't know much about it as well. In the end it was just a easy book to read and pass the time.

This is great. Werewolf, drama, comedy, etc. CinemaSerf: I will admit to being somewhat sceptical when I sat down to watch this, but within about twenty minutes the auditorium was chuckling to the witty banter of Sean Pertwee and his squad of soldiers who find themselves stuck on an exercise in a remote Scottish forest when they’d sooner be in the wardroom sinking a few beers while watching Germany beat England at football. When their fireside banter is ruined by a missile shaped like a dead cow; things start to liven up and what ensues is a race against time for their very survival – there are more dangerous creatures in the forest than red squirrels! Kevin McKidd keeps the troop focussed at they face their foes with grim determination and their black humour prevails pretty much throughout their ordeal. The special effects are a little bit “Dr. Who” but Neil Marshall ensures the lighting and sound folks do their level best to keep the suspense going for a long as possible and at no stage does it hang about: it’s end to end action with a tinge – a soupçon – of horror as the story builds to an enjoyable denouement! On the big screen again now in late 2020 – not sure why – but if you get chance, and you like your horror unsophisticated and funny, then this is definitely for you.

Jose Lemus Lawyer Attleboro
Tumblr media
Attorney Jose Lemus has suspended his campaign for mayor, citing personal reasons. Although he used the word suspended in his announcement, he will not be on the ballot if his nomination papers are not certified by Tuesday at 5 p.m.Lemus posted the news on his Facebook page but did not go into detail. He could not be reached for comment.“I’d like to thank all of the good folks of Attleboro who supported my campaign. This city has so many kind people and I feel grateful to have met many of you,” he said on Facebook. His departure leaves Mayor Kevin Dumas, state Rep. Paul Heroux, and former fire Chief Ronald Churchill in the race for the chief executive post. Lemus, 32, started his campaign aggressively in January, saying he would bring a fresh perspective to City Hall.
