D&D 5e's alignment trap
The 5e alignment system is a useful shorthand and a misleading trap. The Outer Planes as presented in the 2014 Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide only make the alignment system’s problems worse. The perfect overlap between alignments and planes—and the total lack of alternative Outer Planes—reinforces the alignment system’s worst inclinations: easy stereotyping, reductionist thinking,…

Three Great Optional Rules To Spice Up Your D&D Campaign
Three Great Optional Rules To Spice Up Your D&D Campaign
As I prepare to jumpstart an ambitious new campaign with my RPG group of six years, I’m excited to explore several optional rules to enrich my players’ experience–let’s jump into them! 1. Dael Kingsmill’s Major Injuries Magical healing can really lower the stakes for your adventuring party. Have a good enough healer, every cut, bruise, and chopped off limb will be good as new before you can so…

5 Things the Dungeon Master's Guide Never Planned For
5 Things the Dungeon Master’s Guide Never Planned For
Tumblr media
Strap in folks, it’s about to get nerdy. For over 40 years, the world of Dungeons & Dragons has grown, transformed, and expanded to include just about every possible scenario you can think of or imagine. From fighting goblins to overthrowing entire governments, nothing is off limits in this magical universe created by Dungeon Masters (or DMs) around the world. The players of this game of fate…

30 Fantasy Gaming Flash Encounter Ideas
30 Fantasy Gaming Flash Encounter Ideas
Sometimes games don’t flow like we expected them to. You planned to take three hours, and your players get through most of the quest in one. Not everything that happens at the Dungeons & Dragons table has to be part of some epic happenstance, however. Sometimes, small things stand on their own and aren’t at all part of the bigger picture. We as Dungeon Masters need them because it helps us…

Review: "Dungeon Master's Guide" for "Dungeons & Dragons" 5th Edition
Review: “Dungeon Master’s Guide” for “Dungeons & Dragons” 5th Edition
Back when D&D 3e came out in 2000, the Player’s Handbook came out before the Monster Manual and Dungeon Master’s Guide (which is why, thanks to the OGL, there was a 3rd party monster book available for sale the day the PHB was out but not the official MM.) The Player’s Handbookcontained an insert that gave more information needed to run the game, including some sample monster stats. Later…

E56 YR1- 5E DMG Nerdarchy’s 1st Impression of the Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Dungeon Masters Guide Podcast
Episode 56 of Nerdarchy the Podcast Year One Here is our 1st impression vid and podcast of the 5E DMG. We spent quite a bit of time doing micro break downs of the DMG from here on out. We cover each section individually. Going forward I’ll probably combine two or more sections for the podcast.…

"The Menagerie"- Out of The D&D Encounters Box #20
“The Menagerie”- Out of The D&D Encounters Box #20
Tumblr media
Introduction:   It’s always important to read the flavor text. For monsters, magic items, and spells, the flavor text can turn a blase encounter into something more. This very encounter is based upon the little details of one spell – Polymorph. (Page 266 of the Player’s Handbook) However, instead of just using that spell as written, what if you created a special region affected by the spell, and…

Want more 5e D&D potions? Look no further
Want more 5e D&D potions? Look no further
For those who played Dungeons & Dragons prior to Fifth Edition, they might have noticed some old, favorite potions no longer appearing in the 5e Dungeon Master’s Guide. This makes sense as Fifth Edition is the most streamlined version of the game so far. What to do, then, if you want to include those potions in your current 5e game? Simple. You turn to The Emporium of Uncanny Magic – Lost Potions…

Can’t find a local D&D game? Check your library
Can’t find a local D&D game? Check your library
Tumblr media
If you’re struggling to find a game of Dungeons & Dragons in your area, you might try your local library. For some time a number of libraries have been offering room and time for D&D, sometimes even providing Dungeon Masters for those who want to play. For the last three years, the Durham County Library in North Carolina has held D&D games on Saturday afternoons. The program has become so popular…

"Down on the Farm" Out of the Box D&D Encounters #6
“Down on the Farm” Out of the Box D&D Encounters #6
Tumblr media
Introduction: Often, the most basic of settings can be a great place to put an encounter. What will seem like another boring problem will turn out to be more. When missing goods, livestock and the like become a problem, players always assume that goblins, kobolds, or the usual rogues gallery of villains is to blame. Switching that up from time to time is a good idea, as it keeps the players…

Hello and well met fellow RPG Nerds,
Nerdarchist Dave here with another edition of our Nerdy News and weekly digest. Hope folks got their game on this weekend. Unfortunately Nerdarchy did not. Ted was away at the Wicked Fair convention where his wife was performing. She is a member of a belly dance troupe.
We had been running 4 games a month- Ted’s Gryphongaff 5e game, my 5e Gryphongaff game, my 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons Underdark game online, and of course Scott Garibay’s Star Wars RPG.
We’ve haven’t played the Underdark game since November. I’m a little sad about that, but it can’t be helped. We almost had it going for tonight, but we couldn’t get everyone.  We have permanently lost one player and are down to four. We are debating whether or not to bring a 5th or keep it at four players. Crossing my fingers for session 5 in March.
Either way I’m excited we’ll be playing Star Wars next weekend. I finally have my own dice to bring to the table with a great dice bag to put them in and it isn’t the Mandalorian dice bag everyone else pretty much uses for carrying their Star Wars RPG dice.
Now onto other cool nerd stuff. We’ve had one of our fellow RPG YouTuber friends meme Ted and I. Ian messaged me with it while we were shooting our weekly vids Tedless. Ryan and I laughed our asses off when we saw it. There is a strong probability it has made it’s way over to Instagram.
By Ian Christensen from the YouTube Channel Fantastic Dimensions.
OK guys I could use your help on this one. I have to admit I’m a little embarrassed. I put together a teaser trailer for YouTube so YouTube will pimp our channel around the Internet a bit more. One of the things is they have to be short. So my idea was to grab different clips from our video content. Here is one of the problems we’ve got close to 900 hundred vids on the channel and I was trying to grab choice clips from memory. Which mine it isn’t the best of.
So here is what I want your help with send me what you think some of our best clips are at Nerdarchy at G mail dot com. Sorry about spelling out the e-mail address, but you know e-mail scrapers. You can also reach out to us through our Facebook page. Those messages get checked fairly frequently. Below is my 1st attempt a trailer. I thought it came out pretty well. Biggest problem is there is a bit to much me in it.
Nerdarchy RPG Teaser Trailer
I’d also like to thank Easy Roller Dice for sending us some really sweet dice bags. My Reversible Wyvern Bag will be either the new home for my D&D dice or my Star Wars RPG dice. Haven’t decided yet.
I don’t believe these are available yet, but worth keeping your eye out for. I am quite happy to have new home for my dice. A little bit ago Nerdarchist Ted did an article on Easy Roller Dice- Here
Or you can just head over to their website- Here
Quick disclaimer: Purchasing products from Easy Roller Dice through a link on this site will result in Nerdarchy earning a small affiliate commission. You’ve been warned!
