Three Movie Pitch Ideas for If I Ever, for Some Reason, Guested on the Podcast Are You Afraid of the Dark Universe?
1. ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU is the easiest pitch in terms of fitting it into D&D's established Dark Universe: Moreau is from a public domain novel by H.G. Wells, the same author who created The Invisible Man; Gwen the righteous werewolf would be his ideal opponent as she leads the other beast-people to revolt against the white man in the plantation suit; and it gives me a chance to talk about one of my favorite movies of all time Island of Lost Souls (which isn't a Universal Studios movie but it does feature Bela Lugosi).
2. THE COMEDY HOMAGE. When I go to Letterboxd and filter all the Universal Studios movies I've ever rated, the only ones that truly speak to me are classic comedies from the thirties and forties. So instead of trying to make myself care about dinosaurs or time machines or John Hughes, I'd see about playing to my strengths and pitching a movie where a monster attacks a traveling circus, featuring a W.C. Fields-alike as the crafty and boozy ringleader, Olsen and Johnson analogues leading the clowns, a pesky woodpecker named Woody, and an obligatory appearance by D&D's Abbott and Costello updates (as played by Larry David and Pete Davidson).
3. THE JAWS SPOOF. This is the one least likely to make the cut: I'm not actually all that into shark attack movies, even upon acknowledging that the original Jaws is one of the best of its ilk. But I am endlessly fascinated by one particular piece of Hollywood trivia: that the original pitch for Jaws 3 was to make a National Lampoon spoof titled Jaws 3, People 0. The podcast episode would probably devolve into matching SNL alumni with shark-attack gags, but it could be worth it just to discuss the fact that National Lampoon's Jaws was a real idea once upon a time.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito sold shares of beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev as conservatives were ditching the Bud Light brewer over its partnership with a transgender social media influencer.
On the same day that Alito sold Anheuser-Busch, he then bought the same amount of stock in Molson Coors, a company with a history of facing political boycotts of its own, the filing shows.
The transactions have bred fresh accusations that Alito, one of the high court’s six conservatives, is engaging in or aligning with partisan politics, despite a recently adopted code of conduct that directs the justices to “refrain from political activity.”
Alito sold between $1,000 and $15,000 of AB InBev’s stock on Aug. 14, 2023, according to a financial disclosure filing for the justice that was recently made visible through a federal judicial database.
Tumblr media
The Supreme Court did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on Alito’s transaction report or the timing of his stock activity.
At the time of Alito’s stock sale, Anheuser-Busch was still grappling with a monthslong campaign to boycott Bud Light after the company partnered with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in an April 2023 social media campaign.
The partnership threw the world’s largest beermaker into the center of a broader fight over transgender rights and acceptance in the U.S. — and stoked a backlash from both conservatives and supporters of Mulvaney, who was reportedly stalked and targeted with death threats amid the controversy.
In May 2023, Modelo replaced Bud Light as the top-selling beer in the U.S. Data from around that time showed sales of Bud Light had dropped nearly 25% year over year.
AB InBev nevertheless reported better-than-expected profit in the second quarter of 2023, and as of May appears to have emerged from the boycott efforts virtually unscathed.
Alito’s switch to Coors is also noteworthy in light of the company’s history of facing boycotts from Mexican-Americans, Blacks and the LGBTQ community over workplace practices.
Alito’s investment activities came to light as the associate justice is facing a swell of criticism over a New York Times report that an upside-down U.S. flag — a symbol used by supporters of the pro-Trump “Stop the Steal” conspiracy — was flown at his home in the days after the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Alito denied any involvement in inverting the flag. He told the Times that his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, “briefly” did so “in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.”
But that statement has not quelled Alito’s critics, some of whom are now demanding he explain the timing of his sale of Anheuser-Busch.
“This sale, given the timing and much like an upside-down flag, can be construed as a political statement,” said Gabe Roth, executive director of the nonprofit judicial watchdog group Fix the Court, in an email to CNBC.
“I believe Supreme Court justices should refrain from making political statements — even oblique ones or even ones their wife or broker may have made on their property or in their brokerage accounts, respectively,” Roth said.
Roth noted that the beer companies in question have no pending business before the Supreme Court that he can think of.
But if Alito or his broker were truly reacting to the Bud Light boycott or the surrounding culture war, Roth said, then the stock sale “speaks more about the justice’s media intake and where that puts him on the political spectrum.”
“If the sale was in response to the Bud Light controversy last year, he might have an appearance-of-bias problem when it comes to future court cases related to trans rights,” Roth said.
The transaction notice was one of several that were posted to the Federal Judicial Financial Disclosure Reports database last week, and then removed without explanation. Roth said their disappearance was “possibly due to the newness of the system.” The reports had reemerged on the database as of late Monday morning.
The filings were first reported earlier Monday by the legal blog Law Dork.
The court is set to soon deliver a ruling on whether former President Donald Trump will gain presidential immunity from criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
The court, which bears a six-to-three conservative majority after Trump appointed three justices, is not expected to grant Trump’s sweeping immunity claim that a former president cannot be charged for any official acts they perform in office. But the justices in oral arguments in April seemed skeptical of parts of federal prosecutors’ case against Trump.

The Greatest American Rock Star Tournament
A lot of new people have discovered the March Madness of American Rock Bands in the past couple of days and are reblogging and commenting on polls that closed some time ago.  I appreciate the energy, but unfortunately there’s also a lot of anger and threats directed at bands and the people who voted for them.  I propose redirecting that energy to our follow-up tournament for The Greatest American Rock Star!  Follow this blog and reblog this post so we can get as many voters as possible for the next tournament and hopefully avoid people being angry about it after the fact.
Here's the plan:
I’m making a list of solo rock performers from the United States (including artists who were born, naturalized, or just lived in the US for a long time).  The list is below the cut and currently has 312 artists.  I’m still accepting submissions but will cap it 320.
We're using the broadest definition of rock for the artists participating in this tournament. Genres and sub-genres will included acid rock, alternative rock, art rock, blues rock, country rock, dance music, doo-wop, electronic music, folk rock, funk, glam rock, grunge, heavy metal, hip hop, indie rock, industrial, new wave, pop, power pop, punk, rap, reggae, r&b, rock and roll, rockabilly, singer/songwriter, ska, soft rock, soul, surf music, yacht rock, and more! If you think an artist is "not rock" then the best thing you can do is not vote for them. Nobody wants to see your comments about how you think [artists name] is "not rock" and if you're too obnoxious about it you might get blocked.
For the first stage of the competition, artists will be in groups of 4 with other artists from the same decade.  Since many artists have multi-decade careers, I’m placing them in the decade when they first emerged as a popular recording artist, which is deliberately vague, and I may shift some artists around a bit to balance the groups.
Schedule:
April 3-10: Group Stage
Every day I will post 9 to 10 polls of groups of 4.  These polls will be open 7 days to allow them to get the most possible attention from Tumblr users.  Campaigning for favorite artists is encouraged. Vitriol directed at artists and especially at Tumblr users who vote for them is not, and may get you blocked.
April 17-20: The Winnowing
Artists who advanced from the group stage will be seeded for head to head, one day polls against other artists who participated in groups whose polls started on the same day.
April 27-May 10: Bracket
All surviving artists will be placed into a bracket for head-to-head matchups lasting one day each.

OPEN TO: @stayliquid for lydia hawke MUSE: aster roth, thirty. actor / male lead. dylan o'brien fc. PLOT: wildest dreams (our version)
Tumblr media
The numbers didn't lie— there was no way Aster could find a way out of this contract without losing everything. Yet, every time he stood under the swelter of lights and had to take Lydia's hand, he believed it was worth everything as a means of giving it up. He dropped it from his grasp and turned to face the crew peeking through the shadows. "Absolutely not, I can't do this. This script is a shit show," Aster called out, cigarette that he was meant toss aside to kiss her brought to his lips instead. "In your wildest fucking dreams is that gonna happen."

Team Go for the WIP ask??
well, it doesn't say "team go" in those exact words, but... here is an excerpt from a mini-sequel i have in progress to my story Forget the Days Gone By:
------------
The small crowd that had gathered 'oohed' and 'ahed' as the blue-clad superhero leapt lithely from the tall tree, agile despite his seeming bulk, and landed gracefully in front of the anxious woman at the center of the gathering.
"Ma'am, I believe this," the man said, smiling charmingly as he held out the prize in his hands, "is your cat."
"Oh, thank you Hego!" the woman said, taking the animal into her arms. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't been here!"
Hego stood tall, hands on his hips as he beamed over the crowd. "Team Go will always be here for for the citizens of Go City."
Several minutes of questions and signing autographs followed, as was typical of any heroic rescue, until finally the crowds dispersed and Hego was able to slip away, re-cloak himself in the attire of Brendan Roth, mild-mannered fast food manager, and return to his job with just enough time to help the other employees cash out their drawers.
After he finished meticulously checking each cashier's numbers—some had tried to steal in the past—he clocked out and turned out the lights, yawning as he locked the front doors of one of many Bueno Nachos in Go City and began his walk home.
'Home…' If any place could ever really fit the true meaning of the word. Go Tower didn't, he had finally come to realize some years after Shego's departure. He still spent most of his time there of course. Ever since Mego left for college and the Wegos—
He halted his thoughts and mentally corrected. 'Brody, Dylan, and Alex…' Shego had— 'Rachel,' had tried to tell him for years… It wasn't until the twins had reached a certain age and started to realize there was an entire world outside of their little bubble, and that he didn't have the answers to all of their questions, that it finally began to hit him. And Brody's departure, though not as abrupt as Rachel's, had suddenly put him in the place of no longer being the leader of a team… He was just Hego.
And Hego didn't really have an identity.
