Bad News of the Week:

Wednesday will be Earth Overload Day. This means that by then mankind will have already used up the resources of its home planet for the entire rest of the year. So we are continuously not giving the Earth a chance to recover from us. This has already been going on since 1970. For Germany this bitter day was already calculated for 04 May. The Germans consume thus each year the resources of three earths. The US-Americans even of five, record holder Qatar of nearly nine.

India, Bangladesh and the Philippines are the only populous countries that are not yet in the red. However, they are tending to get closer and closer. As they emulate a "Western lifestyle": lavish housing, individual mobility, inordinate nutrition.... in short: consumption. What a bad example. The same goes for the Scandinavian countries, all of which - despite having few and well-enlightened populations on a large territory with seemingly a lot of unspoiled nature - rank among the worst in Europe.

What to do? A look at the #MoveTheDate statistics is enlightening: the introduction of soundly calculated carbon pricing alone would push back the date of congestion by a full 63 days. Thus, the infamous "hidden costs." In my opinion, more transparency here would also have a lasting impact on consumption: if you could find out what the desired product actually costs every time you click on the shopping basket, you might think twice about whether it's really worth it.

Good News of the Week:

Back in 2009, the G20 countries promised to stop subsidizing fossil fuels. Nothing has happened so far. Until now. Canada is the first country to implement a plan that eliminates the advantages that until now have favored the oil and gas industry over other energy sources. "This is a fundamental departure from what we've done in this country for decades," proclaims Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault.

Last year's tax breaks, grants, financing, and other supports to the oil and gas industry added up to a massive sum of more than $15 billion. Climate experts praised the plan as an important step, but criticized it for having too many loopholes. But a start has been made, and the other states will pay close attention to how "the markets" react. What a good example.

Personal happy moment of the week:

Taking a walk by the lake, even if it's raining. Finishing a movie, even if it's bad. Gladly taking the train, even if it's late. Playing table tennis, even if it's windy. Happiness is just a question of perception.

I couldn't care less...

...about the bad reputation of e-cars, which are confronted with all kinds of rumors, most of which are simply wrong. Currently, it is said that the batteries of electric cars pose a high fire risk. This is being pinned on the "Fremantle Highway" car transporter burning off the Netherlands North Sea coast. Allegedly, the spontaneous combustion of an e-car battery is the cause of all evil here, threatening the Wadden Sea nature reserve.

This is most likely nonsense. Because batteries do not ignite by themselves. Nearly 600 million disposable batteries end up in the trash in Germany every year - and in the residual waste. That's more than half, because our fellow citizens only recycle 47.7% of their used disposable batteries (not rechargeable batteries!), as they should. If these would ignite themselves, there would be hundreds of burning garbage cans every day in this country. Just saying...

As I write this...

...I'm reading what my parents are having for dinner. They are on a cruise. And on the website of the shipping company you can follow it online. Where the ship is right now (Belgium), what the weather is like (cool and rainy), what excursion was taken today (bus tour to Bruges) and just what's for dinner tonight: Butter, herb butter, barbecue dip, bread selection. Veal tongue, beet, horseradish. Asian cabbage, papaya, Tropicana dressing. Force broth with pistachio gnocchi. Grouper wrapped in zucchini, pesto rosso sauce, roasted rosemary potatoes. Brioche & butter pudding, banana ice cream, salted caramel. Fresh cut fruit. Cheese selection. Wow...
