Hi, welcome back to my blog. I’m a longtime fan of the Vocaloid scene. In recent years, numerous Vocaloid star producers have broken out and become household names in Japan, while others still find continuous viral success on YouTube and Nicovideo.

I want to highlight some of the best yet-to-be-discovered music being produced with Vocaloids and other vocal synths.

My Review:

I have enjoyed everything I have read by Aliette de Bodard, but this is my favorite thus far. Something about the characters grabbed me immediately and held my interest for the entire book. They felt incredibly real and believable and I cared deeply about all of them.

Her writing style is very dense, so her books take me longer to read than most others, but I always enjoy the journey. Sometimes it's nice to be forced to slow down and linger over a story rather than speed through it.

The characters and their motivations are complicated. Revenge and fear and hate and greed and love and justice. They're all very powerful emotions and the book itself feels very powerful. It's a grand struggle and epic battles that play out in subtle manipulations and power plays and scholars crafting the perfect response alluding to classic texts.

I love how expansive and complicated this universe is, with the mindships and bots and the avatars and overlays and perception filters, as well as the Vietnamese names and culture that feels deep and consistent. It feels so vast and so physical, and even though I know it's not real, it feels like it is.

I have read a good handful of Xuya universe novels and novellas now so I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the world, where I was confused occasionally even in the previous novel. It's more sci-fi than I normally read, and I love it. It has such a lovely texture.

I also love how queer relationships are treated as normal and unremarkable, and how many examples of them we have in this book (and her others). There is at least one nonbinary character and it is completely normal. The main relationships are all pairs of women. It's so refreshing and validating.

I have not had such a deeply enjoyable and satisfying reading experience in a while and it felt so good. Wading through the dense language that Aliette de Bodard uses felt rewarding and I was swept away by the strong emotions and convictions of the characters. I am sad to leave this world and eagerly await the next Xuya universe novel.

(It should be noted that I am in the process of moving so the only time I have had to read in the past few weeks is when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't sleep. So I read most of this between the hours of 3 and 6am. And I still adored it and happily spent days wading through its complexity. That's how good it is.)

Jessie Murph & Henry Verus – Franklin Music Hall – Philadelphia, PA – October 29, 2023

On Sunday, Philadelphia went down home and welcomed Jessie Murph joined by Henry Verus for a sold-out show on her Cowboys and Angels world tour. Fans lined up around the block, eagerly awaiting the incredible night ahead of them.

The first to take the stage was Henry Verus. His vocals were stunning, and the emotion in his songs could be felt throughout the venue. Accompanied by a small band and moody lighting, he commanded the stage well. Verus treated the audience to some unreleased music, as well as some of his songs “Two Weeks,” “Your Guilty Pleasure,” and a cover of Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey.” Verus interacted well with the crowd and kept them engaged throughout his entire set. His talent was really remarkable to see, and he put on an incredible performance.

Later on that night, as the lights went low, Jessie Murph took the stage. Opening her set with “Cowboys and Angels,” “About You,” “While You’re At It,” and “Drunk in the Bathtub,” fans immediately began singing along to every word. Her stage was decorated with a multiple layered platform, adding to the depth of her performance, along with moody and deep lighting. Murph took control of the stage, her powerful vocals soaring through the venue.

Throughout the night, Murph performed a set of incredible covers, including “Needed Me” by Rihanna, “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse, and “Someone Like You” by Adele. She also teased a number of unreleased songs, including “Mean It,” “Wildflowers and Wine,” and “Dirty.”

Jessie Murph commanded the stage, connecting with the audience well and putting on a show to remember. The sold-out crowd was a sea of phone lights and hands in the air throughout the entire night. Her talent is unmatched, and her ability to engage a sold-out crowd is an amazing sight to see. Murph’s set continued with “Where Do You Go,” “Wild Ones,” “Heartbroken,” and “Upgrade.” Overall, both Jessie Murph and Henry Verus’s performances came together to create an unforgettable night in Philadelphia.

Since our comeback in September 2022‚ we have been promoting our most recent album‚ “Born Pink” with each members’ schedules and projects. On September 16, 2022‚ YG Entertainment and Interscope Records distributed “Born Pink” all over the world. Finally‚ the Born Pink era has come to an end. Our eagerly awaited comeback from BLINKs‚ “Born Pink”‚ is a condensed collection that plays up the air of authority we have developed in the six years since our debut. A two-day performance at the KSPO Dome served as the tour’s kickoff in Seoul‚ South Korea. After that‚ we continued our tour in Asia‚ performing in countries including Thailand‚ China‚ Saudi Arabia‚ United Arab Emirates‚ Malaysia‚ Indonesia‚ Taiwan‚ Philippines and Japan. Then we returned to Asia and gave four concerts in Singapore‚ China‚ Thailand‚ and Japan. We also performed in North America. We also performed throughout Oceania before returning to Europe‚ Asia‚ and North America. In September 2023‚ Seoul served as the final stopover of the voyage. Not to mention that the most of the concert days were consecutive‚ it was a really busy schedule for us. In addition to our world tour concert‚ we also had additional obligations and projects that needed our attention. We didn’t get a lot of rest. But despite our busy schedules‚ the other members and I were still able to provide BLINKs with an amazing and memorable experience and performance. For that‚ we are all feeling proud and amazed by the other members and ourselves. In our final day on our final part of our tour‚ we bid our BLINKs a fond farewell and thanked them for their full support since day one until the last performance‚ which made us emotional. A tremendous success was once again achieved by our Born Pink World Tour Concert. The tour was an excellent opportunity for us to become more closer to BLINKs‚ and we had an unforgettable experience performing shows all over the world. Even if the tour is over‚ our music will continue to live on and inspire people for years to come.

As the curtain comes down on our world tour‚ we would like to extend a message of appreciation to all of our fans who came to the concerts from the beginning to the end of the tour. Joan He’s STRIKE THE ZITHER takes inspiration from the Chinese historical fiction classic ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS, but readers do not need to be familiar with the latter to enjoy the former. I have not read RotTK, but I still devoured STRIKE THE ZITHER in one sitting and am eagerly awaiting the conclusion of the duology (October 2023, according to Goodreads).

Duologies aren’t nearly as common as trilogies or standalones in the young adult publishing landscape, and that means STRIKE THE ZITHER’s pacing is a little different from what readers might anticipate. It isn’t all setup—the book delivers on more than one major plotline, including a midpoint I loved that radically changes the story afterward—but it may require recalibrating some expectations on the pace of the greater scope plot.

Zephyr is a fantastic narrator. It can be very difficult to write a believably clever character from their POV, and as a war strategist, the bar for Zephyr is even higher. I thoroughly enjoyed watching events play out from her perspective, and her plots and schemes to further Ren’s cause felt appropriately difficult and the victories well-earned. I also appreciated how her ruthlessness came into conflict with Ren’s honor, and how Zephyr did or did not compromise her strategies for Ren’s sake.

I’m a little torn on the burgeoning relationship between Zephyr and Crow. From a purely “respect for a talented rival” perspective, I loved it, but I felt the romantic overtures happened faster than my preference for longer and slower burns. Still, their conflicts as rival strategists were a thrill to experience, and I’m definitely looking forward to what will unfold between them in the sequel.

Recommendation: Get it now if you’re a fan of fantasy and life-or-death intrigue. Joan He’s STRIKE THE ZITHER is an engaging story about a strategist determined to deliver victory to her warlordess while an empire threatens to fall apart around them. I’m looking forward to the conclusion of this story next year!
