everyone always brings up the Colossus as an example of technology moving "too fast" in tlok but no one EVER brings up the rapid progression and monopolization of the movie industry (no silent movie era, straight into action serials and propaganda films, and we dont know how Edison Varrick gets with patents and who has the right to produce movies but.. going off the fact that he's a war profiteer I'm going to guess he gets pretty Edison))

A Christmas Carol Holiday Season: "A Christmas Carol" (1910 silent short film)
Tumblr media
This silent Christmas Carol, only slightly longer than ten minutes, is the second oldest surviving film version of Dickens' novella and the oldest complete one. (A British film titled Scrooge from 1901 also survives, but is missing its opening and closing scenes.) Produced by Thomas Edison's Motion Picture Studio, it's nowhere close to being a definitive Carol, but it's a very interesting historical artifact, and an enjoyable one too.
Dickens' narrative is condensed in a way that suits the short format, but which no adaptation could get away with today due to the story's sheer familiarity. In place of the traditional three spirits, Scrooge is visited by a single "Spirit of Christmas," a jolly giant in festive robes who chiefly resembles Dickens' Ghost of Christmas Present, but with the long white hair and androgyny of the Ghost of Christmas Past. Nor do they ever leave Scrooge's bedroom. Instead of visiting different times and places, Scrooge is shown transparent visions which appear and fade. Tiny Tim makes just a cameo appearance in the Cratchits' house, with his name never even mentioned and his illness never addressed. And in Christmas Yet to Come, in place of the book's "mystery" of the hated dead man's identity, Scrooge sees himself die, with a maid coldly stealing a ring from his finger. Still, there's room for a little bit of story expansion. Rather than already being married, Scrooge's nephew Fred has a sweetheart whose father refuses to let them wed because Fred is too poor. But in the end, the redeemed Scrooge makes Fred his new business partner, which will give him the income to support a wife. He then takes the happy young couple to deliver gifts to the Cratchits' house on Christmas morning, where at first the whole family comically thinks Scrooge has gone mad. As we'll see, this isn't the last Carol film where these embellishments will be used.
Though the camera is static, and the film direction and acting are stagy by modern standards, this short still boasts a good atmosphere and a strong cast. Marc McDermott is excellently cast as Scrooge: tall, commanding, effective both in his meanness and in his ultimate warmth and cheer, and only slightly melodramatic now and then. The only other credited actor is Charles S. Ogle (who, earlier in the same year, was the first actor ever to play Frankenstein's monster onscreen) as Bob Cratchit, but all the performers fill their roles well.
This Carol might be eclipsed by later versions, but no one can deny that it's interesting, or that it has charm.

Helltober, Day 22, Frankenstein's monster. I based this on the 1910 movie made by Edison Studios. It was the first film adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel. It was a bit hard to get a great photo to draw from so I took a few liberties. I kept the awkward stance of the character though because it's too odd not to include.

Fan Theory: Alastor had a rivalry with Thomas Edison (yes, really) in the 1920s
Tumblr media
I originally had a whole theory typed up with lots of evidence for this, but my computer crashed and deleted all of it, so here are some of the basic points of the theory that I came up with:
Alastor grew up in the early 1900s, when the phonograph, invented and sold by Thomas Edison, was the main form of music recording and playing in the United States. Alastor was likely called a "gramophile", or gramophone enthusiast "who eschewed a wife and children to focus on music", as he was an asexual during this era. However, radio started to replace phonographs in the 1920s-1930s, cutting into Edison's profits, to his frustration.
Alastor was a popular radio host in the 1920s-1930s, and was one of the main reasons why people were buying and using radios, instead of Edison's phonographs and records, to play music. If people could listen to music for free on the radio, why would they buy Edison's phonographs? (Alastor was quite smug about this.)
The quality of music on the radio was often better than on Edison's phonographs and recordings, as many radio shows provided live music, which means inviting the band and musicians to play live on-air. It wasn't something that could be mass-produced for profit, also to Edison's consternation.
Alastor's specialty was jazz, a form of music originally "invented by, and for, the phonograph". (He also dabbled in blues as well.)
Unlike Edison and other phonograph and record producers, who were often racist and used what is called "digital blackface" today (i.e. pretending to be Black in recordings, because hiring Black artists over white artists was unthinkable), Alastor was an authentic mixed-race Creole host, though likely "white-passing".
Vox seems to be based, at least somewhat, on Thomas Edison, particularly as Edison didn't just formerly control the music industry with the phonograph, but also the movie industry, with one source stating that 75% of Americans in the 1920s went to the movies "every week". (Edison sold his film studio in 1918.)
Alastor seems to have a special disdain for Vox and his "picture show", all movies and TV shows. My guess is that this came from his disdain for Edison Pictures and the movies vs. radio rivalry.
Edison died at the age of 84 in 1931 from old age and diabetes complications, whereas Alastor was killed in his 30s-40s in 1933.
As an edit, here is Part 2 of this fan theory with a lot more evidence.

Technoblade is listed to receive the Courage Award at the Sarcoma Foundation of America’s 20th annual fundraising gala, Stand Up to Sarcoma, which will be held on September 28, 2022, at the Edison Ballroom in New York City.
Here is a link to the article.

A series of screenshots showing the listing for this year’s Courage Award from the Sarcoma Foundation of America. It reads:
“Courage Award honorees illustrate, through their personal efforts and actions, sarcoma advocacy. These individuals are patients, survivors, caregivers, and advocates who inspire others by using their platform on behalf of sarcoma patients and survivors to create hope and a better life for the sarcoma community. Many do not think they have done something special but who have inspired others and are making a difference for sarcoma patients and their families. The Courage Award honors patients who have demonstrated strength and perseverance in their sarcoma diagnosis.

Technoblade, real name: Alexander, was an American YouTuber and internet personality known for his YouTube channel, Technoblade, a Minecraft persona in the guise of a pig that he started at 14 years old. He is widely regarded by the game’s community as one of the best Minecraft players and Minecraft content creators. In the beginning, he plugged away at making videos, attracting a small but steadily growing group of followers with a goal of accumulating 10 million subscribers, an achievement reached by very few*. In July 2021 at the age of 22, after noticing pain in his right arm and a sudden lump, he was diagnosed with sarcoma and chest scans revealed metastasis to both lungs. Alex endured chemotherapy and radiation treatments, an embolization procedure tumor, and also participated in a clinical trial for the treatment, Milademetan. Throughout his sarcoma journey, he decided to use his significant platform to help support sarcoma research, even if it most likely would not gain results in time for him. His first effort for SFA was “Minecraft But Viewers Control The Game (Charity Event).” Still weak from chemotherapy, he played for almost four hours, raising over $360,000. Throughout his treatment, he continued to do more for research, and made February 2022 his own Sarcoma Awareness Month, raising an additional $150,000. In total, Technoblade rallied his followers to raise over $1 million for sarcoma research. Unfortunately, tests revealed that his sarcoma had continued to grow and the masses in his lungs had begun pressing against his heart. He died in June of 2022, shortly after his 23rd birthday, at home, surrounded by his family. The public reaction to the announcement of his death was overwhelming. And rather than focus on what an amazing gamer he was, or how smart or how funny he was, instead people talked about his kindness and his generosity. People spoke about how much his videos helped them through a difficult time in their lives. Other well-known YouTubers such as Dream, expressed their admiration for him. Simon Collins-Laflamme, the co-founder of Hypixel, and business magnate Elon Musk expressed similar feelings. YouTube posted its condolences to his family, friends, and fans and Technoblade was described as “one of Minecraft’s most celebrated personalities.” Mojang Studios, the creators of Minecraft said that Technoblade “became synonymous with a source of good.” Even now, people are still quoting his oft-repeated catchphrases, including, “Technoblade never dies.”
*In June 2022, Technoblade’s channel had reached 10.8 million subscribers and in August 2022, it posthumously reached fifteen million subscribers.”
