something I’ve been thinking about is like, the internet is this magical system of technologies, never before seen in human history, and one of its capabilities is to answer virtually any question you ask of it. Which is not even remotely a novel observation obviously lol. But I’m thinking about this in the context of a point that Adorno & Horkheimer made (in The Culture Industry I think?) about the radio: that to expedience the radio, to live in a social context where there is this vast incomprehensible system of technological infrastructure that you do not understand or control, and which allows you, a mere peasant, to listen to news broadcasts, music, and advertisements, is effectively like listening to the voice of god. Like the average person’s relationship to modern telecommunications is so mystifying, incomprehensible, and abstract that we experience technologies like the radio as an all-powerful, indestructible authority, and this (obviously) shapes our relationship to the information that is shared through it. People make jokes on here about how transmission towers are angels, but like tbh that is essentially how we experience them - vast, incomprehensible, highly dangerous objects whose impact on our lives are at once all-consuming and unknowable. We do not just turn on the radio and listen to the news, we tune into what the voice of god has to say today - right now he’s selling toilet cleanser!
and all that to say, I always find something a bit incomplete about discussions about wilful ignorance online - that we live in an age of mass information and yet people still seem as ignorant as feudal peasants, or whatever. Nobody googles things, nobody tries to branch out and experience new kinds of art, nobody educates themselves on important topics they don’t understand. and like this frustration is very real and well taken, I feel it frequently, but what I’m grappling with is whether this is the correct framing - that maybe “why don’t people just google things” is the wrong question to ask, because I tend to find the explanations offered unsatisfactory. Like specifically I’m thinking of discussions on here that are about like, “anti-intellectualism”, kids these days are so ignorant even though they grew up with the internet, reading comprehension is piss poor, and so on. Recently I’ve seen a lot of weirdly moral-panicky posts about children not knowing how to type on computers because back in my day we were forced to learn how to touch-type by age 8 even though we couldn’t look up any tutorials on YouTube to help us, etc etc. And like I just do not buy that people are individually choosing to be ignorant, that people are “getting dumber,” and that this state of getting dumber is inversely related to the amount of information we have access to (which makes “getting dumber” even more dumb). An unstated assumption that goes into a lot of these “anti-intellectualism” discussions is that “information” is this universal object that has a standardised enlightening effect on the people who interact with it - that the only reason to have an ignorant, sheltered, or ill-formed opinion on something is because you have individually chosen not to Look At Information that will cure you of your ignorance. And so going back to the god radio thing, having regular access to the google search bar is not just having access to an encyclopaedia or dictionary - it is like having a direct line of communication to god, this authority that can answer any question you ask of it. But it’s not just one answer, it’s many answers, more answers than you could ever possibly read through. Google reports the number of hits it returns for whatever you type in - you will regularly get millions of answers to your question. And these answers are embedded with advertisements, just as radio news broadcasts are. Like if god is selling you toilet cleanser while telling you the number for a suicide hotline or news about what’s happening in the world, how do you psychologically deal with that, how is your relationship to capital-I Information shaped by this relationship?
The corollary to “we live in an age of mass information” is “we live in an age of mass misinformation,” but they both show up as answers on google (again, not a novel observation). but in the face of that how do you not simply stop asking questions? & of course this decision to stop asking questions is given form and substance by social circumstance, it reinforces systemic privileges and violences, and so this decision is not one free from consequence, and in many cases it is not an innocent decision. a white person deciding not to read the news because it’s too hard to figure out what is happening/too frightening/etc has the consequence of reinforcing the white supremacist outlook that is foundational to the social context of white people because they’re not reading anything that challenges that outlook. ignorance has many social contexts and many of them are violent. etc. like the consequence of “why does nobody google anything” is just a continuation of the status quo, just with this supposedly glaring and easy fix to it (simply google it). but that just leads us back to a discourse of individual choice, of people individually choosing not to “google shit.” it is a deeply individual fix to a systematic social problem. and so maybe the question is not, why doesn’t anyone google shit, but rather, why is the primary delivery system of knowledge a god that sells you toilet cleanser

Hi!! I wanted to say that I loved reading about your journey of creating a personal website. I'm still unsure between Vercel and Netlify. I have a small question to ask. See, one of the reasons I want to make a website is to archive drawings and journal/sketchbook. Would you have any tips for creating an area on my website just for the diary/journal, which has tags, files for each entry, etc.?
Bello!
Really happy to hear about your interest in websites! I want everyone to make their own site so I don't have to log into social media and get instant tummyaches ♥
Vercel vs Netlify: I think I settled on Vercel for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I just made a site on Netlify, then tested on Vercel, and now I have like 5 websites on Vercel so I just kept using it LOL. I'm sure a more tech-savvy person would know the difference - I think they have certain integrations with specific programs.
Creating a diary or journal with tags:
There's a couple of different ways you can do that, with different levels of work needed.
you got me yapping again:
This sadgrl tutorial might be outdated and may or may not work, but explains the process better than I can.
Easiest: make a journal on Dreamwidth, or another blogging site (wordpress??) that allows easy tags and RSS feed, and embed that RSS feed onto your site.
This requires almost no HTML set-up, and the easiest to organize tags, but you don't truly have the data on your own site since it's just embedded.
When I snuck into a web design class at college, this was one of the methods that the professor used for a blog within a portfolio site LOL.
Shit like wordpress is what a LOT of ~professional~ sites do for their blog section. They code it separately from the main site haha. It's the most popular thing, but not necessarily the best. And wait til you read on what the CEO of wordpress has been having meltdowns about... he owns tumblr too!
It's made with a tutorial for Neocities if that's what you use.
Medium: Set up zonelets.
It will require some HTML and JS editing, but will help automate making headers/footers for each page of a blog.
I've never used it myself, but I see other people speak highly of it.
HARD FOR ME CUZ I'M A GORILLA: I believe a lot of professional web devs will slap your face with their coding cock until you use a static site generator (SSG) to make your site.
You will need some coding knowledge to set up the tagging system since it doesn't come with it enabled by default. But it's made explicitly to be an alternative to big Static Site Generators which are...
It requires some more intimidating knowledge, because it's a lot of scripts that turn files that are not HTML/CSS/JS into plain HTML.
Also you have to use the command line, and that doesn't come with buttons that tell you what you can do. You have to copy/paste all that shit or memorize the code to 'dev build astro' and it all looks silly.
I've used Eleventy, and now am using Astro. Other people use Hugo or Jekyll or some other stuff with crazy names like Glup Shitto. I hate all these sites cuz none of the words mean anything to me. This is a common theme for me and tech. I don't know what NODES or CONTENT or ISLANDS are!!!
I had the most success attempting to learn how to use a SSG by downloading a template and altering it with github + VScodium. Here's the template page for Astro. You click on a theme you like, and it takes you to its github page. (If you don't want to use evil Microsoft stuff sorry. Skip this entire section.) Follow the instructions on the page for "forking" the glup shitto. When it tells you to run commands, I run those commands through the terminal window in VScodium. These tutorials never tell you what these commands do cuz they assume you already know. Usually those commands automatically install the files you need onto your computer, and create the final files.
You can see my wip here for a "tag system" that SHOULD show members of a web listing haha but I don't know what I'm doing and I have a reading disorder AND don't know cumputer good.
THEORETICALLY this will be the simplest and easiest way to maintain tags and files, because after you set it up you just have to write the "content" of the blog page. And you don't have to set up the header/footer ever again. I see the vision, and potential, but I am not there yet when it takes me 5 hours a day to figure out what any of the words in the documentation mean and I don't want to ask an actual tech person cuz they will be like 'obviously just press the Blip on the Repository and then Suck My Ass in the command line".
(side note I haven't updated fujofans in like a year cuz I'm struggling with this part to make updating easier).
Con: the final HTML/CSS code is really ugly if it's "minified", and a lot of themes use """"""professional"""""" CSS libraries like Bootstrap and Tailwind that I honestly think are ugly cuz that's what every fuckin' tech website uses to style their pages and make them look Professional and Minimalist with stupid code like style="500-w dark-gray-balls D-cup-bra" on every single element. Even Toyhouse uses Bootstrap. Eugh!
But maybe you're smarter than me and can wrangle these things better!
That was really long. Woops. I hope you can slug through this wall of text and find something helpful. Feel free to email me if you have any more specific questions. I may or may not be helpful.
If someone else sees this and has better suggestions for making BLOGS, please chime in. I'm begging you.

The Flow of Life and Magical Devices
Nature of the Flow of Life: The Flow of Life isn’t just the source of magic—it's a fundamental force of existence in Scriptoria. Everything living and magical is connected to it, making it both a spiritual and practical energy source. When visible as the Northern Lights, it symbolizes the lifeblood of the world, weaving through every land and sea.
The Flow is self-renewing and infinite, meaning devices relying on it never run out of energy.
It has a natural harmony that prevents overuse or "magical pollution."
Arcane RelicTab’s Functionality: The RelicTab is a masterpiece of magical craftsmanship, seamlessly channeling the Flow of Life to function as a universal communication, entertainment, and utility tool.
Connectivity Anywhere: Thanks to its direct connection to the Flow, the RelicTab works flawlessly in caves, oceans, or even isolated magical fields.
Customization: Users can enchant their RelicTab with personal touches—like changing the mana hue of its glow or inscribing a spell that enhances its voice-recognition spirit.
Everyday Magic-Infused Devices: In Scriptoria, all appliances, tools, and games rely on the Flow. Examples include:
Cooking Appliances: Stoves and ovens tap directly into fire magic from the Flow, while fridges and freezers channel frost magic.
Magical Carriages: Personal or public transportation vehicles hover or glide effortlessly by tapping into the Flow, no wheels or rails required.
Arcane Entertainment Systems: TVs and game consoles are essentially enchanted mirrors or crystals projecting light and sound from the Flow’s magical "archives."
Enhanced Magical Apps
Building on the Flow concept, these apps become even more immersive and mystical:
SpellSnap: Posts are imbued with magic! Users can create illusions or animations, letting images come alive in 3D for followers.
ArcanaTube: Viewers can interact with videos using spells—for example, pausing by saying "Halt" or rewinding with a wave.
ManaMart: Buyers can magically preview items in a 3D magical image (like an hologram) before purchasing them.
Flow-Based Mechanics for Worldbuilding
No Dead Zones: Unlike real-world technology, the Flow ensures constant, uninterrupted magical energy. The phrase "you’re out of range" doesn’t exist in Scriptoria.
No Overdependence: While magical tools are everywhere, they are designed not to replace skills but to enhance them. For example:
Chefs still need cooking skills, even with enchanted ovens.
Writers still need to craft their stories, though enchanted quills speed up the process.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glyphs of the Flow of Life
Every magical device in Scriptoria is marked with an enchanted glyph, a magical rune that identifies its primary function and connects it to the Flow of Life. These glyphs serve as both a seal of authenticity and a functional conduit for the device to draw its energy from the Flow.
Design of Glyphs
Universal Glyph Structure: Each glyph is circular in design, representing the infinite and cyclical nature of the Flow of Life. Within the circle, intricate patterns vary depending on the device’s purpose.
Glyphs glow faintly when active, pulsing with the energy of the Flow.
The glow’s color often reflects the element or essence of the device (e.g., blue for cooling, orange for heating).
Customization: Skilled mages or artisans can slightly modify glyphs to give devices unique designs and features (similare to programming), but the core structure must remain intact for functionality.
Key Glyphs and Their Functions
Communication, Music & Entertainment:
Glyph Name: Audivius
Devices: RelicTab (Phones), Arcane Radios, Portable Sound Relays (similar to earbuds).
Entertainment & Artistry:
Glyph Name: Creativium
Devices: TVs, Arcane Projection Crystals, Computers.
Household Cleaning:
Glyph Name: Purifex
Devices: Dishwashers, Washing Machines, Magic Brooms etc...
Heating & Cooking:
Glyph Name: Ignisculum
Devices: Ovens, Microwaves, Heaters etc...
Cooling & Preservation:
Integration of Glyphs in Daily Life
Device Activation: To activate a device, a user simply touches the glyph. The glyph glows brighter, indicating that it’s connected to the Flow.
Glyph Education: In schools, children are taught to recognize common glyphs, as they are an essential part of everyday life. Advanced students may even learn to craft glyphs for custom devices.
Cultural Significance:
Some glyphs, like Luxira (Light), are also carved into jewelry or object for decorative light.
Guilds specializing in device manufacturing are often named after key glyphs, such as the "Guild of Ignisculum" for heating devices.
Personalized Glyph Seals: High-end devices are sometimes enchanted with personalized glyphs, which integrate the owner’s essence or initials into the glyph design. This makes the device uniquely theirs and unusable by others unless the glyph is rewritten.
PhD Blog Week 16
Courses
Solitons: More nonlinear differential equations, still very methods-course, hopefully we'll actually get to solitons soon
Rep theory: very fast due to use of slides, lots of technical details and not much big picture, but basically every sufficiently nice algebra is made of matrices
Hopf algebras: defined algebras, coalgebras, and bialgebras, so almost at the definition of a Hopf algebra. More reading notes off the screen, I wasted a good 30 minutes trying to show something was a coalgebra and it turned out I'd just written the comultiplication down wrong, somewhat embaressing given that the comultiplication is just given by the double angle formula from basic trig so I should have seen that, I guess that's what you get from trying to do maths in the evening
Supervisor Meeting
Actually succeeded in computing the Plucker relations in the meeting up to signs with some guidance, then spent two hours after the meeting trying to redo the calculation keeping track of the signs, then spent another two hours writing it up, but it's done! Now I just need to figure out the details of how this connects to the KP equation. Made the mistake of asking why they're called Plucker relations and had to sit there for 20 min as my supervisor explained how we can identify solutions to the KP equation with points in the embedding of an infinite dimensional Grassmannian into a projective variety, and I know just enough algebraic geometry to be slightly terrified
Teaching
First year maths tutorial was fine, except I had to teach myself how RSA encryption works, it's a neat application but it would be nice if they gave the tutors a more detailed solution.
Two out of three dynamical systems tutorials, one cancelled for weather. I think they went ok, we'll see how things go when it's not just revision of eigenvalues and Taylor series
Talks
The integrable systems talk this week was on a certain class of symmetric functions, and how they can be viewed as the coefficients of an expansion of some S_n action in Schur functions, so very close to a lot of the stuff I do, but way more technical. We went out for a meal afterwards which was nice, first time we've done that, hopefully we can have more regular meetings because it would be good to know other people in the group
Offloading a few ideas for a career change, with short lists of concerns. I'm obv not trying to (don't want to) get rich or famous in any way, I just want to have a semi-meaningful job while we wait for the next cataclysm.
embedded/microcontroller developer pros: well paid possibly, fun, creative, job market not crowded cons: difficult, could be a high stress job, small job market, potentially risk killing people if making buggy software for a like a train brake system
full time photographer pros: fun cons: crowded job market, physical job outside, a lot of wedding shoots which I'll probably hate
videographer cons: so much work
3rd party plugin / special fx developer for video editing pros: creative cons: very crowded market online, and as any job based on online reputation, it takes about 3 years to build a stable following or source of income
stay at home husband pros: yes please. I would cook for you so well cons: ew. people
musician cons: hahahahaha
stock library musician cons: even at full speed of composing a few albums a year, it will take 3+ years to just break even
youtuber pros: none cons: yes
youtuber but with like a separate "pro tutorials" website for some filthy $20/mo subscription bs pros: actually sensible cons: insane amount of work, marketing is expensive
the milkman pros: my milk is delicious cons: criminally insane
game developer pros: yeah man. i'll gnaw your face off cons: it will literally take 12 years to make anything good and by then there will be even more shovelware than now
Rust-based Linux kernel developer pros: hardcore to the mega cons: I'm not remotely smart enough to learn this in the next 3 years
physical work pros: I like simplifying my life and exercise cons: I will literally lay on the floor crying after 3 days
Other ideas that are basically the same in most ways than some of above: * developing assets and tools for game engines * making VST plugins or similar audio tools * make a website / app for self-help, self-therapy, exercise etc * make stock music/sounds for video games * work as a consultant for app architecture * develop apps or games for operating systems outside of the big 5 (eg. KaiOS, HarmonyOS, Tizen) or for smaller consoles (Raspberry Pi based devices that are popular enough and are not meant for just pirating and emulators)
Why is C Programming language most Popular for Beginners Programmer?
C is a popular choice for beginner programmers for several reasons:
Foundational Concepts: C teaches essential programming concepts like data types, variables, functions, loops, and control flow. These concepts are fundamental building blocks for many other programming languages.
*Relatively Simple Syntax: C has a relatively simple and straightforward syntax compared to some other languages. This makes it easier for beginners to learn the basics of programming without getting overwhelmed by complex syntax rules.
Direct Hardware Interaction: C provides a level of control over hardware that most higher-level languages don't. This can be beneficial for beginners who want to understand how computers work at a deeper level.
Wide Range of Applications: C is used in various applications, from operating systems and device drivers to embedded systems and game development. Learning C can open doors to various programming fields.
Abundant Learning Resources: C has been around for a long time, and there are many learning resources available, including tutorials, books, and online courses. This makes it easy for beginners to find the help they need when learning the language.
Changes to Tag System:
TLDR; The Inkopolis tag has been changed.
Quick update (which will soon be reflected in the links) on the tag system. The use of the "inkopolis" tag has been changed.
Prior to this, the "inkopolis" tag referred to any location that was stated or presumed to be in or around the general Inkopolis area, such as stages.
The definition of the "inkopolis" tag now refers to only areas that are core Inkopolis. This includes Inkopolis Plaza and Square, Inkopolis tutorial areas and the Splatoon 1 test range.
Most stages are no longer included in the Inkopolis tag. This may change in the future; stages that are clearly embedded in the city and offer a good view at the surrounding area might be re-included (examples: Urchin Underpass, New Albacore Hotel), while stages that are implied to be in Inkopolis but are indoors and show next to nothing of the outside will be kept out (examples: Humpback Pump Track, MakoMart).
The new tag to replace the Inkopolis tag in Stage posts is greater inkopolis. This is the canonical name for the Greater Inkopolis region, encompassing not only the city but its immediate surroundings until cut off by the Octarian border or the Splatlands. Stages that fall into the Inkopolis or Greater Inkopolis borders, or that have unclear locations but are estimated to still be in- or near Inkopolis, will now use the "greater inkopolis" -tag.
This change has been made to clarify the geographical classification of stages and prevent the core tag for Inkopolis from becoming cluttered by screenshots that do not show the city.
Note that posts tagged with "greater inkopolis" will still show up in the search for "inkopolis" due to tumblr's search system. The tags still function interchangeably in this manner. If you want to ONLY find posts tagged "Inkopolis" and completely avoid irrelevant stage pictures, you must use the tag search. This change should be useful to those only looking for reference images of the architecture, neighborhoods and environment of the city of Inkopolis to help with the big picture and avoid shuffling through photosets of indoor areas with no substance in this matter.
The transition between tags has not yet been fully completed. Also keep in mind that the transition may have resulted in some errors in the tagging system (as I am doing it by hand and squinting at the mass post editor thumbnails trying to figure out what photoset is what stage). Some photosets may have had their tags erroneusly removed, while others may have been erroneusly tagged as greater inkopolis despite not qualifying. However in the grand scene, I don't think it should cause anything catastropic.
Let me know what you think of the change, if it seems like a useful change, and if there are any other improvement ideas for the tagging system to make navigation easier!
thx for reading kthx baiiii
MyMaps Experience
This week I worked with MyMaps, a GoogleMaps based application that allows me to save/explore certain areas relevant to my studies. I worked alongside this tutorial for ease of learning and to speed things along so I didn’t have to go back and forth between the video and the test map. This map was centered around the main islands Hawaiian Archipelago (Hawai’i, Maui, Moloka’i, O'ahu, and Kaua’i) and focused on things like sustainable agriculture, ecotourism destinations, and nature preserves. For the purpose of this assignment, I chose one area of each category to showcase:
Sustainable Agriculture: Kualoa Ranch (Spoon and Fork Icon)
Ecotourism: Waimea Canyon State Park (Hiking Icon)
Nature Preserves: Volcanoes National Park (Volcano Icon)
The user interface of My Maps is very friendly and simple. You won’t need any fancy coding or GIS skills to use it, which offers non-academic opportunities to people like writers who want to save certain locations for worldbuilding or reference purposes (which I certainly plan to do in the future). Back to the biodiversity side of things, MyMaps enables you to mark areas that are important to biodiversity for a myriad of reasons, whether that be preservation or education to the general public about biodiversity. Kualoa Ranch is an example of education, as it offers behind-the-scenes tours of how they grow their food in accordance with the ancient sustainable practices of the native Hawaiians. Volcanoes NP is a good example of preservation, as the park operates in accordance with the National Parks mission to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations” (About the National Park Service 2016).
When it comes to the individual locations selected, there are quite a few customization options available. You can select different icons (as mentioned above), but you can also color code them for things like different projects. I didn't do that for this assignment, but when I use this in the future for non-academic endeavors I can color code based on stories. Each location you pick has the option of adding images to the Infocard (shown below with Volcanoes NP). Once again, this has both biodiversity and writerly applications.
When you zoom in on one particular area, you can outline the area with MyMaps. While I didn’t use this application, there is a way to import a data table into My Maps to get a more accurate outline of a desired location. This can be used for mapping vulnerable areas that are key to protecting biodiversity, such as Hanauma Bay (not shown on map) which serves as an important reserve for different species of fish and corals.
For finishing it all off, there are numerous options on the main card of the map. One of the most useful that I found was the “set to default view”. This enables me to preset where I want the map to open whenever I click on the Hawaiian Archipelago project, which saves me a lot of scrolling and dragging. Although I didn’t use any of the embedding options, it should be noted that much like a google doc or drive file, you have to enable sharing permissions in order to share it with others.
That's all for this week! Happy mapping!
