I made a curious cat and people been asking about my designs so I thought I would share it here too If you have any question too you can send it here or over on curious cat!

Under cut is a very long monologue about some design choices regarding my s1 gang, Gerry and some avatars!

S1: Jon, Martin, Sasha and Tim

Right off the bat I'll admit I had seen TMA fanart before, but I assumed it was a game from how consistent designs are (Jon and Martin); however when I started I avoided fanart (but I am not immune to TMA fanon designs). I'll explain S1 gang, they are my favourites. I find fcs helpful to keep them consistence.

Jon: I have a basic Jon design: short, brown man with long hair and glasses. Jon has a put together façade but, he wasn't qualified for the archivist position, and he doesn't know what he's doing. Therefore, I like him with longer hair he can't care for, therefore messy. It gets longer with the seasons and adding on all the marks he gains from the entities. I gave him half-moon, golden glasses with chains holding two eyes. I like to think it's a Beholding artefact, so Gertrude wore them before him. I used to have Dev Patel as a reference for him, but I've switched over to Riz Ahmed!

Martin: Very basic: fat man with fluffy hair and glasses. When I heard his voice, I thought of Harvey Guillén, who stayed a reference for Martin's body. I pictured him in a dorky attire; round glasses, ginger, comfy yet business appropriate clothing. I added eyes in the pattern of his jumper and added freckles. I've recently play around adding a beard, because I think he wants to look older than he is (re: CV; "I'm only 29!") but haven't found a style I like. I keep him fat throughout the series, instead of him losing weight s4.

Sasha: She has some canon traits: tall, long hair and glasses. I draw her hair up to stay out of her face. Contra Jon, I think she was more qualified for the archivist position, so Gertrude started preparing her for the role. She wears an eye necklace I draw Gertrude wearing that's in the same style as Jon's glasses. She has a matching bracelet with Tim and overall is one of my favourites. (notSasha): I took what was established and flipped it; short, short hair, no glasses. I imagine notthem could pass as cousins (since they still need traits to the victim's family?); no immediate resemblance but with a few traits of the original.

Tim: Canonically described as hot so I have my own bias. I started with general attractive traits: tall and fit. I think he puts a lot into his appearance. I use Keanu Reeves as a reference, and he works great for him. He’s a hair guy, gets it professionally cut and owns expensive products, skincare routine and dresses in fitted clothing. His standard is a shirt with an eye pattern. He takes pride in his appearance, so S2’s worm scars troubled him. He stops shaving to let it heal properly but they never go away. He never liked looking at them and they are a cruel reminder of the past (however, one scar splits his eyebrow to x2 bisexuality). S3 he stopped caring about putting in effort, the stubble grew into a beard and his clothes aren't fitted. He loses muscles, gains weight, and isn’t who he was in S1.

Gerard Keay

I had just assumed Eric was hispanic (for some reason) and then I connected that he's Gerry's dad, and apparently I headcanon him half hispanic lol

But it was why I wanted to draw the Mama family portrait to play with genetics. Letting his dad be rather tall, tan with dark curly hair and Mary be ginger with paler skin; Gerry's pale, ginger with curly hair as a child. He grew up looking like Mary and started altering his appearance to be more like his dad; dyed dark hair and taking some of Eric's clothing (I also gave both a beauty mark under their eye he'll highlight despite wearing make up). Alternative scenes and goths tend to straighten their hair but I let Gerry have naturally wavy to still resemble his dad more. I tried to give him trad goth make up, mainly looking at Siouxsie Sioux in the late 70s. And a fun bonus to have his hair often cover one eye because, The Eye

Gerry cared for his dad, even if he died when he was a toddler (if I remember correctly). Gerry's chosen name is the nickname Eric referred to him as, which is also where my trans headcanon comes in (afab). I haven't thought it out fully, or how that reflects on other characters since everyone else calls him Gerard but I think there's some symbolising there having a chosen name relating back to Eric

(some) Avatars

Oliver Banks: "the Egyptians believed the most significant thing you could do in your life was die,"; I take inspiration from Ancient Egypt for my Oliver design! He wears an Ankh around his neck, but I want to look into more about Egyptian death symbolism (he has a cross too, but I'll probably remove it for future designs). I've also taken some inspiration from Nordic mythology, with Hel (Hela In English? Loki's daughter (not Marvel) ) as half his face is beautiful, and the other is a corpse (skull). I don't wanna mix too many cultures just for the sake of it, but it was a really fun design decision. And he's goth. Bonus death aligned I next time I draw Georgie I'll draw inspiration from the Death's-head hawkmoth

The Distortions: Michael's 60s and Helen's 80s inspired, no reason, just vibes. I like to think of Michael as a spiral while Helen's a twist, if that makes sense, I've been meaning to draw them together to demonstrate, but I'll include a doodle of it

Jane Prentiss: I looked into a lot of paganism, and fell into a rabbit hole. She's described as a modern witch, so I wanted a subtle alternative look with a shaved side and gauges. One of her breasts are exposed because (boobs) in old pagan traditions a lot of rituals were performed nude, to be closer to nature. A lot of pagan art has a very strong feminine force, I want for Prentiss. She has one eye, but I'll probably remove the other too, I've seen a lot of people do for more holes

Nikola Orsinov: Drag king. Because we need more of those. I love drag so Nikola's has a mix of both male and female attributes since he's just trying to imitate a human. Their design is also inspired The Toy Soldier in the mechanisms (haven't listened? To it but a lot of people pointed me to that designing Nikola!) that's also her actor Jessica Law! I put all my gender into Nikola lol, and when I can sneak an IT reference in I will

Breekon and Hope: Wario and Waluigi

Annabelle Cane: She's described having web keeping her skull together, but for some reason I imagined it to be down her neck. So I pictured her head occasionally falling off and being restored by a web. So I gave her both lol. Her vintage style is old, goth Hollywood glam to me and I love looking at reference for her

Bonus Agnes: I haven't drawn her fully, but I wanna take inspiration from Scandinavian culture, think Midsommar (both the movie and the tradition) and maybe Norse paganism. I love Agnes story and how it's only told by other people, and her relationship with Gertrude is so interesting!

• He insists that you’ve put some kind of love spell on him because now he wants to hang out with you all the time and he’s always thinking about you

• You didn’t, he just has the biggest fattest crush on you

• To be fair, you have a huge crush on him too so it's not as bad as he thinks it is

• He definitely tries to put a bunch of spells on you under the guise that it's for research but he's trying to put a love spell on you because he doesn't believe you have a crush on him

Kyle Broflovski, the Elf King

• Elf King Kyle doesn’t wanna admit he has a crush on a human princess for like, a really long time

• Stan has to talk sense into him

• Like no honey- you getting butterflies, thinking about her all the time, and getting all red when you see her isn’t you despising her

• He does all sorts of romantic Romeo and Juliet bullshit to try to impress you and get you to like him

• Y'all hang out in his big ass tree under the stars that's where y'alls first kiss is

Stan Marsh, the Knight

• I saw some fanart when Stan gets called Marshwalker and I thought it was the CUTEST thing- you probably call Stan your Marshwalker, only in private tho

• You're probably the elf princess and that gives him an excuse to be around you and protect you

• He definitely goes to Elf King Kyle like "H e y m y l i e g e I h a v e a c r u s h o n t h e p r i n c e s s- can I have your blessing?"

• It backfires very, very badly. But you know what?! You like him and he's still your knight so that's all that matters!

• You guys probably date in secret because Kyle wouldn’t exactly happy that y’all are dating

Kenny McCormick, the Princess

• Cartman definitely yells at you and Princess Kenny when y’all flirt like he does his cat

• Cartman’s literally yelling “THATS GAY- BAD PRINCESSES, BAD >:( THATS MY PRINCESS KENNY” and you guys literally will not stop laughing about it

• It really just gives Princess Kenny the courage to flirt more, especially because she likes seeing the smile on your face when Cartman turns red from anger

• So flirting is something that happens very often between y’all-

• You guys are badass together, just 2 warrior princesses doing warrior princess things (Princess Kenny tries convincing you that kissing is totally a warrior princess thing)

Butters Stotch, the Paladin

• I can guarantee you, Butters has forgotten that he’s mid battle and gets hit because he started thinking about how pretty you are

• It’s kinda sweet how he’s willing to protect with his life

• Expect him needing a lot of healing kisses on the cheek

• He’s the sweetest tho, Butters also always brings you flowers every time he sees you

• He insists on making you flower crowns because a princess needs a pretty flower crown that’s equally as pretty as her

List of AUs time!

Main Ninjago AU- It’s literally just Ninjago but with my headcanons, the characters actually act traumatized, and it takes place in between Crystallized and the Merge. Random shenanigans I come up with happen here (like if I ever make comics). Dragon’s Rising is the future and the designs are different.

Golden Hope AU- There was this video on YouTube I saw called “alternate ninjago timelines” and one of them was if Kai took the fang blade instead of Lloyd during episode 10. Lloyd dies and Kai somehow doesn’t explode in the volcano, and for some reason he’s the green ninja now. Don’t ask why.

Eventually he defeats Garmadon (he kinda sorta 💀’d him-) and Misako tells him “erm actually the ‘dark lord’ from the prophecy was the Overlord ☝🏼🤓” so now he tries to defeat the Overlord but gets tricked and possessed by him, and takes over Ninjago. Womp womp.

Except not because a girl named Jenny from Imperium falls into Ninjago like 4 years later due to one of her classmates accidentally creating a portal to Ninjago and she has a magic flashlight that the First Spinjitzu Master gave her somehow. Just like Kai surviving the volcano don’t question it 👍🏼. She finds the other ninja and they set out to defeat the Overlord. Yes this is a fanfic that has 13 chapters and no I am not done with it yet so I ain’t posting it here or on Wattpad any time soon.

Raging Fire AU- Saw some fanart that had Kai with the Samadhi Fire from LMK so I thought “ooo AU idea!”

Basically Ignatius (first fire master) was a hothead and didn’t like it so he made a fire purely out of his anger to get rid of it but whoops it turns out this gets passed on with the fire powers so if one of the fire elemental masters gets too mad they summon the fire and turn into an angry fire monster.

The au is based on Kai unlocking the fire after a shitty day fighting off The Mechanic and Jay stealing the last cookie. Cole’s the only one strong enough to stop him so if he goes apeshit he’s the one to help him out.

(This was totally not an excuse for me to write a Lava fanfic… *cough*)

Cole Jr. AU- AU where baby Wu was actually just a random baby and Cole adopts him (actual Wu was found by Misako and the resistance during Hunted). Yes he is officially named Cole Jr (he goes by CJ).

CJ just hangs out with his dad or gets babysat by other characters during the rest of the show and during DR he’s like 8 or 9. He fell in TLOLT with Cole and was raised with the finders, Bonzle, and Geo. The end.

Earthbound AU- Pretty self explanatory. Heard the idea from someone’s tumblr post (I forgot whose, sorry!) and thought “I wanna do this, but make it another Lava fanfic!”

It’s Seabound but Nya = Cole and Jay = Kai. The end.

Movie Actor AU- Really, really self explanatory. It’s the movie, but everyone is an actor.

This au gives an excuse for a reason for why everyone’s personality is different. It’s because the director of the movie wanted the characters to be a bit more like their actors. Speaking of which, here are their names:

Lloyd- Eric Davis

Kai- Ethan Daniels

Cole- Nicholas Richards

Jay- Jacob Wilson

Zane- Cole Harris

Nya- Emma Hansen

I thought of this really funny gag where the actor for Zane is named Cole, and during the first couple of times they were recording, whenever someone would say “Cole” (as in the character), both Cole and Nick would react.

I think I’m funny.

Ooh, Craigman! 🌶️ Honestly, I think I could see Cartman with anyone if I squinted hard enough. I love that ridiculous, dominant guy LOL. They'd have an interesting dynamic to explore, considering Eric's huge, boisterous personality and Craig's subdued stoicism. A good blend 👀 You can also share your thoughts on the ship!

Actually, Craig is one of my faves. I am perpetually trying to figure out fics about him.

Omg! I love the Stanman band 😭 Eric has some serious musical talents. He's gonna end up singing some crazy gushy stuff with sweetheart Stan writing their music, but it's the price he has to pay. Them traveling the world as the most iconic duo, I love it! 😍 Eric would get really jealous of Stan's fans though.

Oh yes! I think you would love the main protagonists and their connection. I'm feral about this movie, I just watched the day before yesterday, and I'm so anxious to have time off so I can draw fanart of the thing because it's soooo good.

Now, I love horror, so I have seen so much horror in my life that I can tell you this is one of those movies in the genre that are different. Our protagonist is Sam (short for Samira) and she has a cat named Frodo (I'm sorry but that was genius in so many ways, I can't tell you why because spoilers but they really make it made sense, there is truly a connection there). Frodo the cat is a character as well, I have never seen a movie before that has an animal that has indeed some weight into the movie (at least not one that is not like Marley and Me or those kind of movies).

Anyway, sorry, back to Sam. The first thing you know when the movie starts is that she has cancer. A woman who has cancer in a movie that develops into an apocalyptic world is really interesting. The movie explored this in detail, and I loved every second.

She is tired, she is angry, she is brave, and at the same time, you can tell she is scared af. She has some problems trying to connect with people because she thinks there is no point in it anymore, and probably because she thinks they are sorry for her and therefore their interest is not genuine.

She used to be a writer. She wrote a book about poems. She doesn't have the drive to write anymore, but she carries a notebook, whatever she goes, and I love her so much, Betty. I can't even explain the whole of it.

So next, we get to know the ML. Name is Eric, she is from England and went to NY to study to be a lawyer. He is how you write Eddie on your Stranger Things fics. I went even more feral at this point, I was chewing my fist. They were perfect together.

They connect. They make wonderful things for each other.

I don't wanna say more about it so you can enjoy it for the first time yourself, if you want to watch it. (But if you want to know more, just say so, I would be happy to talk about it for hours!)

I would say something I just learned yesterday before I go. Eric has anxiety in the movie. He has panic and anxiety attacks during the movie. What they removed is that he was trying to kill himself when the whole alien/monster ordinal began, and then, he met Sam. They erase this part from the movie, I guess because of time, because I could tell anyway while watching that Eric was maybe suecidal or that al least he was neurodivergent (again, I would love to elaborate but spoilers).

Hope you have the chance to watch it, I would love to know your thoughts if you do so. Also, you can scream at me about it if you enjoy it as much as I did.

So basically, this is a movie about two really lonely people that connect and gain perspective about life and themselves while trying to survive the beginning of an apocalypse. It felt very transformative. It was perfect.

I fully recommend checking out the SoS tag there if you wanna read up approx. 65 bazillion posts where I analyze and gush over the game, though be mindful my side blog is an Adult Blog For Grown-Ups, so please curate and filter as needed (most of the SoS content there is sfw, but there's at least, maybe like two, risque fanart I posted up there.)

That said, I'll copy and paste what I wrote there here (with some editing):

"In the Womb of the Stars" is my defacto, most favorite song in the entire soundtrack. It is unsurprising that I picked a Yasunori Mitsuda vehicle (not that Eric W. Brown is a slouch!), it is incredibly ambient as you described. It's also ethereal, peaceful, hopeful, and conjures images of starry night skies so perfectly. I feel simultaneously content yet surrounded by mysteries I've yet to discover.

Other fave tracks...

The Great Archives: This actually wasn't in my original list. I liked the song a lot, but didn't know if it was one of those things I'd be listening to quite as much as the others on the list, but it grew on me more and more. Few could really make a theme song that genuinely sounds like "Old Wizard Lives and Smells Like a Library", but "The Great Archives" managed it very well.

Mooncradle: Particularly its night theme. The part where it sounds like it twinkles is a good first impression of the kind of whimsy this game excels at. Bardcore version of this was also good.

Dance of 1,000 Suns: Such a good title for Garl’s theme. It’s so bouncy and joyous, a perfect fit for the perfect boy.

Teaks, the Traveling Historian: The beginning kind of sounds like an ol’ West theme, though further listening, it’s pretty clearly meant to portray her mile-a-minute observational skills.

The Mole Masons: Especially its day theme. It’s just so upbeat and perky.

Serenade of Respite: This was my fave for the longest time until "In the Womb of the Stars." It's just so soothing. Legit feels like this was a leftover from Mitsuda's "Chrono Cross." That's how good it is.

The Storm Calls for You! Cheesy concertina aside (and maybe because of it), this boss theme is a BANGER.

Settlers Island: It sounds both like Christmas and Stardew Valley: very cozy.

The Town of Mirth: Cozy x10. Love how relaxing it is. Both day and night are great.

Monuments to the Ancients: Kinda feels like it’d make a good credits score, honestly. It has that same vibe I feel whenever I listen/see the credits to Super Mario Bros 2, actually.

Shoppe: I like the overall shop theme in SoS, but the Docarri one is the best. It’s the prettiest sounding one.

The Frozen Peak: Holy shit, this one is an EARWORM.

The Bamboo Forest: Incredibly serene. Just slap a screencap of that locale on YT for ten hours with that music, and add in some trickling water sound effects and BAM! You got an ASMR.

Volcano Pursuit: Also a banger. I don’t really gel with a lot of, like, lava-themed songs (y'all can’t ever top DKC 2’s “Red Hot Bop”), but this one is really, really fun.

Elegy of the Hero: Hi, I’m gonna get on my hands and knees and cry again, thanks.

Stars Align on the Assembly Line: Love it. Would rave to it.

With RWBY now in indefinite hiatus, I've been thinking of a couple of shows to watch to pass the time....

A few shows I want to watch in mind:

Wakfu - I've been seeing some amazing fanart and some short clips here and there. The animation and art style caught my interest, so I thought I might give that a watch!

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - I've mentioned before on another post about a RWBY AMV I've seen, (which you should absolutely check out btw), the moment I heard the OP song from YAOSOBI I'm immediately sold! Plus the amount of fanart I've seen is amazing too!

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury - When I first saw some clips from the early seasons of the show, my immediate thought is, this is basically a RWBY Whiterose in Space AU! And the two main characters (and the sypnosis of the plot) really sold it for me!

The Dragon Prince - The fanart and edits were enough for me to get into it. That's pretty much it!

Delicious in Dungeon - The anime is animated and produced by Studio TRIGGER! Do I need to say more?

Slayers (Anime series) - The anime is basically a 90's DnD campaign experience! (I myself have never played DnD but from what I've heard and seen it looks super fun! Maybe one day I might get myself into it with moots!) Stars a GOATED VA cast (and among of my top faves) from the likes of Lisa Ortiz, Eric Stuart and Veronica Taylor. The animation and art style is simply to die for! I've watched a video retrospective from Unicorn of War, and I immediately decided to add that to my anime watchlist!

These are the shows I'm planning to watch, so if there are any followers of mine that want to interact some shows mentioned with me, don't hesitate to comment under this post. Of course please do not post any spoilers!

tfw when ur strawman fails

If you've found this post, I don't need to introduce Leasebound to you.

Instead, we're going to talk about the fandom.

Leasebound's fandom has a sort of Lemony-Snicket-esque schism, with Rusty's intended audience and (hilariously) the exact opposite. I've seen both sides of the Leasebound audience, and I've noticed something interesting.

...nobody hates Blaire.

Okay, that's a HELL of a sentence to make, and very exaggerated. I've seen 'Blaire unenjoyers' and other people treating Blaire like the Eric Cartman of Leasebound, it's an eye-catching statement that makes people read more of the text post.

But I wouldn't call it wrong, I'd give it a 'hyperbolic.'

Even on the side of Rusty's intended audience, Blaire isn't loathed. I've seen many enjoyers of Blaire who either talk about how much they went her to talk gender to them, so to say. On the flipside, the worst interpretation of Blaire is a misogynist who pushes her activism on other people, which is more or less her canon intent.

But if Blaire was as bad as Rusty Hearts portrayed her, I don't think we'd see so much art of Blaire. In fact, I put down a poll, and Blaire pretty much took the #1 spot for the 'character with the most fanart' almost instantly, beating out characters such as Jaden (who took silver), Riley, and Violet. And it pretty much sticks! I've seen a lot of Blaire fanart from the Leasebound tag on both sides! I've seen a lot of Blaire discussion and discourse on both sides, either about the possibility of a redemption arc, a rewrite, thirsting over her, etc.

So...we can pretty much say Blaire is a bad strawman.

Strawmen are supposed to be one-note characters the main cast is supposed to be more interesting than and can fight with no pushback. Blaire is massively popular across the board in the Leasebound fandom, has discussions about her that are multi-layered, and has wonderful fanart from people that really like her.

Done. That's all.

But we're not done. We need to keep talking.

Rusty Leasebound is very good at some things. Her chapter focusing on Shez had emotional, gut-wrenching art, and there is a definite appealing quality to the way she draws things.

Some things, atleast.

But Rusty is not a great writer. There's tons of other essays and an entire discord server that can point all the flaws in her story out enough to write an epic worthy of the Mahabharata. Leasebound has largely forgotten what it is to be a mouthpiece for her political opinions, its characters are one-note and one-dimensional, she focuses on the wrong things at the wrong time, and many more that will make my fingers cry as I type this. But I want to focus of Rusty's tendencies to tell, not show.

Blaire is not evil. She's not even Maleficent or Ursula or Cruella evil. And she's no Makima either. Blaire is just a woman passionate about her beliefs, and makes the mistake of pushing them on other people. That's not evil, that's a flaw. Women cannot be perfect all the time.

But we're meant to believe she is evil. In this panel of the Actor!AU, we are TOLD by Rusty that Blaire is meant to be evil.

Blaire isn't evil! Come back to me when she puts a living creature in a blender, or something!

While the statement is understandable, you're using it in the wrong way! Because there is no reason for the casual Leasebound reader to ever believe Blaire is evil, the way you portray her!

(Yes, casual Leasebound readers exist. Quinty's one.)

And there's multiple occasions of this 'tell, don't show' narrative Rusty keeps pushing.

For example: Meriam.

Meriam is told to be the protective, strong mother, but I'm not sure that's entirely the case.

Meriam has serious flaws in her parenting that is never acknowledged. Shez was made to basically worry for her siblings at a young age, which sounds horrible for a young girl.

(side note: criticism of the comic has often lead to more interesting, and realistic plotlines for leasebound to include.)

She's obviously traumatised, and it shows in her parenting. When she shuns out Rissa and her boyfriend; that's not good! If Rissa wants her family by her side, she won't get it because she's marrying a man. Meriam always keeps Shez on the pedestal like she's Luisa from Encanto. Nobody asks how's Shez. Someone help Shez.

And there's so much more!

We get snippets of Riley, a MAIN CHARACTER'S backstory from one-off panels and dialouges, but we heard the majority of it from Rusty in the comment section, Rusty confirming fan speculation, the cast page, non-canon panels, etc. Nothing in the main story!

And that just makes Riley...really boring. The most interesting part of Riley is Blaire right now, and that's REALLY bad, considering we're supposed to dislike Blaire.

Blaire and many others of Rusty's characters have fallen into one of her biggest writing flaws' clutches, but it's interesting as to how fan perception and works have essentially made one of the most three-dimensional characters of the comic, aside from Jaden. And that's one of the main problems with Leasebound.

I want to end this with an open letter. I don't know if she'll read it, but if you do:

Listen to criticism, and find out what's wrong with your comic. Tune in to different parts of the fandom, even when you don't agree with them. At the heart of the war, we all share one thing: reading your comic. Don't take that for granted; many amazing, better written comics would love to have the attention you have. Your art is good. I enjoy reading Leasebound when it's about the characters, not how we're supposed to percieve them. You have something; harness it before it goes away! And at the rate Leasebound is going- it might go away really fast.
