Mr. Gnome presents: Nothing and Everything
Mr. Gnome’s swirling “Nothing and Everything” is a lush soundscape that spotlights Barille’s golden harmonies & demonstrates the dense tapestry of textures, aural fabrics, and influences subsumed.
Tumblr media
On Wednesday (26 of june 2024), Cleveland art-rock duo Mr. Gnome will be announcing their new album A Sliver of Space out September 27th via El Marko Records. While always pushing themselves in their pursuit of sonic exploration, the duo of Nicole Barille and Sam Miester, create a living, breathing, shapeshifting realm of psychedelic sounds. The album is mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Interpol, Tennis, Temples, Parquet Courts, Ra Ra Riot).
The swirling first single “Nothing and Everything,” which is a lush soundscape that spotlights Barille’s golden harmonies and demonstrates the growing confidence that duo has made in the studio since their last album, 2020’s The Day You Flew Away. They will be announcing full North American tour for the fall as well.

Continuing to defy simple genre classification, Mr. Gnome create a dense tapestry of textures, aural fabrics, and influences that all coalesce into a unique, defining sound. Throughout its relatively compact runtime, electronica, desert rock, psych, indie rock, and lush soundscapes swirl and converge. They’ve received acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone (named "Band To Watch" in a spotlight review), NPR, Consequence, Paste, Esquire, Spin, Magnet, MTV, KEXP, and more.

Let's hit play! Brandon Ambrose harnesses hope with autobiographical pop banger 'Keep Me Breathing'! Though it's quite a sad song I think it's been written in an almost uplifting way in that's it's an acknowledgement of mental struggle and turmoil. It's rare that biographical writing is the main element of the song. I like the country acoustic sound  Watch https://youtu.be/tRXzHMOCOF4?si=yKKKMdzWvsqRDz1G Listen  https://open.spotify.com/track/3nfYhpWXz9k9hhbctrsmLw?si=74c8a0179d24434b Lei Hope – 'Matrices' EP Listen/Watch Plastic Girl, Summertime, Sinner and 21, that's just four of the singles from Lei Hope's album, Matrices. @charliesmydarling The jazz drummer in question is Dave Tough (1907-47). He was an early swing/jazz drummer, and also one of Charlie’s biggest heroes. They’re remarkably similar in appearance and personality, actually.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tough grew up well educated, but eschewed the professional life his father wanted for him to become a musician. He was born in Chicago, and spent a lot of his early life listening to African-American bands (as well as brining others to Lincoln Gardens to do the same), eventually he became a founding member of the Austin City High School Gang and one of the most prodigious drummers of his generation, though he never willingly took a solo. Even as a teenager, he was so good that Louis Armstrong used to stop by the White City Ballroom a few times every week to hear him play.
Eventually, he moved to New York to try to make it in the big leagues, and, later in the ‘20s, he traveled to Europe, and found a lot of success in Paris. However, he was also epileptic, and at that time some doctors believed that alcohol was a cure for that disorder, so he developed a drinking problem. Right before the Great Depression, he came back to the US, and bounced for a few years between NYC and Chicago, sometimes playing the drums and sometimes essentially living on the street because he was getting drunk so often he couldn’t work. By 1935, he’d gotten himself somewhat together, and he worked in a variety of famous big bands, including those of Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, etc.
During WWII, he was in Artie Shaw’s Naval Band, and after that came his apogee. He joined Woody Herman’s First Herd (1945-6), and had his period of greatest professional success and recognition, becoming the first drummer to win the Down Beat, Metronome, and Esquire polls all in one year. But his alcoholism forced him to leave the band, and began drifting around to work occasionally with old friends. In December of 1947, he slipped on an icy sidewalk in Newark, New Jersey and died, aged 41.
Tough is fascinating as a drummer, but also as a human being. He was a talented writer, who worked on a novel (as of yet still unfound) through his life, published a book of poetry so good it was praised by Kenneth Rexroth 40 years later, and wrote music criticism and advice columns for Metronome. In the same vein, he was very interested in, and knowledgeable about, art, literature, linguistics, etc. But he felt that he was an awful writer and an even worse drummer. Those close to him remembered him as a thin, quiet, hilarious little man (about 5’6” and 98 lbs) who always had a book and never had a kind word for himself. A lot of them thought his self-hatred was the root cause of his alcoholism, and why he eventually drank himself to death.
No-one else saw Tough the way he saw himself, though. He was universally beloved for his extraordinary kindness, and regarded as one of the greatest drummers ever. Woody Herman said, “A giant rhythm player! With the least amount of ‘chops,’ Dave inspired a whole big screamin’ band with his subtleties and strong feeling for time. And he was probably the most gentle, the kindest, one of the grooviest cats you’d ever want to know." Everyone who knew him said the same. Giants of jazz like Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, etc. went on praising him years after his death and the most extraordinary thing you run into reading about him is that basically no-one had a bad thing to say about him.
Tumblr media
Bud Freeman (1906-1991), the saxophonist, became friends with Tough as a kid, and remained probably the closest one he had through his whole life. They were in the Austin City High School Gang together, went to NYC together, worked to find each other positions in Europe, worked together constantly in the ‘30s, etc. After Dave died, Bud, who was a composer and writer in addition to being a musician, made it a mission to ensure that the world didn’t forget his friend. Dave appears constantly in all of his books.
“Dave started playing drums as a Boy Scout. He was an Eagle Scout and a fantastic drummer at twelve…Even as a young kid, Dave had something very special. He made it easy for those who worked with him. He practically played your instrument for you. When I performed with other drummers, my fingers would lock up because these guys didn't keep good time. Dave's beat was so powerful that my fingers flew over the horn. Dave was a little beyond being a drummer. That was a hell of a deep mind working there. I don't think an ordinary man could play that well. He was just incredible. So strong yet so subtle. He sounded like another note in the band.”
“The great man who was later to lead all the bop drummers in what they thought was a new style.”
“Dave Tough, who would become the greatest jazz drummer in America, or anywhere…”
“In my view, he was a Louis Armstrong, a Bix Beiderbecke, a James P. Johnson. A true giant!”
Essentially, he used his second life as a memoirist as a way to help make Tough immortal, and to carry on their longest standing argument after his death, to try to convince Dave that he really was a great musician.  I think the little story he tells about Dave in Crazeology is a beautiful encapsulation of their relationship.
“He was a very literary person, with expansive interests. That's what had the impact on me. He had a way of looking at things that was helpful to many of us. An example? Dave and I went to take in a Cézanne exhibit in Chicago—we were just kids. And I said to Dave, “Gee, I wish I could say something about this magnificent work.” And Dave looked directly at me and said, “That's the best thing you'll ever say about it.” In other words, all this bullshit that critics have been getting away with for years has nothing to do with how an artist thinks.”

A/N: You might have seen this coming from my last post, but I just couldn’t help it! One more theme day post for Regency Day over at the HBC - this one is for @the-ss-horniest-book-club with Bucky x Plus Sized!OC Nicolette
Word Count: 579
Warnings: none - G
Any mistakes are mine! The below pic is by @amarriageoftrueminds
Tumblr media
Nicolette sighed as she watched all of the couples on the dance floor; for the millionth time her hand reached out towards the platter of candied sweets while a memory of her nasty older sister poking fun at her last dress fitting forced her hand back to her side.
“These are so good!” a muffled voice groaned in delight. Nicolette looked over to see James stuffing his mouth with several of the sweets. She pressed her lips together to hold in a giggle. James beamed at her, happy to bring a smile to her face. He held out one sweet to her. “Want one?” Nicolette shook her head gently; he shrugged with a grin and tossed it into his waiting mouth.
James had grown into a quite a handsome man, something Nicolette had been loathe to admit to her best friend y/n. After all, he was her brother and had been almost as close a friend as y/n. As with any sibling he had teased her when they were younger, but that had never stopped Nicolette from picturing a future with him as her intended. Her family’s fall from fortune had forever shattered those illusions. Now she knew she had to settle with someone who matched her station. She shuddered for a moment, picturing Esquire Freeman as her husband. James watched Nicolette closely. “Are you alright?”
Nicolette pulled back from her nightmare and gave James a smile. “Nothing a good game can’t fix, Bucky.” James pinked at the use of his childhood nickname, running his tongue over his top front teeth as proof of his physical changes.
“Game? What kind of game are you suggesting?” came another male voice. James’s eldest brother Steven flanked Nicolette on her other side. “Are you planning more mischief?”
Nicolette scoffed as she turned her attentions away from the two attractive men. “I gave up mischief some time ago. I can imagine that you have enough planned for the entire room though.” James and Steven grinned at each other over Nicolette’s head.
The music stopped long enough for James to take Nicolette’s right hand. “May I have your next dance?” Nicolette extended her hand out, offering the dance card.
“You should have no trouble finding an open slot.” Nicolette grimaced at the sharp tone of her own voice.
James finished his signature with a flourish, then led the young lady out to the ballroom floor as a waltz began. “Pricks, the lot of them! Forget them all; you still have me, right?”
Nicolette gazed into James’s eyes, wishing that her father hadn’t gambled nearly everything away, that James could really be the match she had always secretly wanted. Her gaze drifted momentarily into the crowd and spotted James’s mother smiling in their direction.  She couldn’t, Nicolette swore to herself. She wouldn’t, would she?!
Before Nicolette could warn James, his mother tapped him on the shoulder. “James, my dear, we are hosting the Marquess of Avon tomorrow. Be my favorite boy and promise to escort our Nicolette here? I think your sister could use the familiar face.”
James nodded to his mother, not daring to contradict his mother’s wishes. “I would be delighted. Nicolette, Mother appears to be playing at matchmaking again. Thankfully her target is y/n, and not myself. Will you be so kind as to save us both and attend?”
Nicolette agreed easily; both missed the scheming glint in the Duchess’s eyes. Don’t worry my son, I’ll be getting the two of you paired next!

Truman Capote hosts the best party—literary or otherwise—of all time.
Well, it’s officially party season, whatever that means this year. On November 28, 1966, Truman Capote, fresh off the wildly successful publication of In Cold Blood, threw one of the most legendary parties ever: the Black and White Ball. And who showed up to his “little masked ball” in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza hotel? 540 of his closest friends, of course, who also happened to be a veritable who’s-who of creative and society icons.
“Before the Black and White Ball, no one had ever imagined, let alone attended, a formal party with a guest list so wildly catholic that it brought into one room the poet Marianne Moore and Frank Sinatra, Gloria Vanderbilt and Lionel Trilling, Lynda Bird Johnson and the Maharani of Jaipur, the Italian princess Luciana Pignatelli (wearing a 60-carat diamond borrowed from Harry Winston) and the documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles,” wrote Guy Trebay in The New York Times. “European aristocrats rubbed elbows with novelists and scholars; social register blue bloods drank Taittinger Champagne with the denizens of Hollywood and Broadway; the stolid middle-class citizens of Garden City, Kan., who had played host to Capote during the years he had spent researching his masterpiece, danced to the Peter Duchin Orchestra alongside the photographer and film director Gordon Parks, who would later joke that he—along with Harry Belafonte and Ralph and Fanny Ellison—represented ‘the black of the Black and White Ball.’” Literary pugilist Norman Mailer was there, sitting next to socialite Pat Lawford. (“We did nothing but insult each other all night,” he told George Plimpton. “It was wonderful.”) John Knowles was there too; he called it “a hoot” and said “I felt as though we were at Versailles in 1788.” Just imagine the meet-cutes that have been lost to history (and champagne).
According to Esquire, “it was the largest private party ever given, if ‘private’ is a term that can be used for an event that garnered more publicity than the Academy Awards. Everyone wore black and white. No uninvited guests permitted.” (“I want the party to be united the way you make a painting,” Capote said.) And the writer was strict about those 540 friends—the space could only hold 550, and an invite was a hot commodity. “If Capote had yelled Fire! on opening night at the opera, the pandemonium among the Beautiful People that autumn could not have been more frenzied,” wrote Amy Fine Collins in Vanity Fair. People offered “great sums of money” to obtain one, and someone even threatened to kill themselves if they couldn’t attend (Capote did invite her, in the end), and some people who hadn’t been invited actually had masks made anyway, “just to keep up appearances.” Now that’s an event.
It’s not surprising that the Black and White Ball remains the gold standard of parties (though library parties are also fun) and the decades since have been full of imitators. But if you attend (or throw) your own this year, just make sure you’re wearing the right kind of mask.

The Letter.
Dear Elizabeth Bennet,
Ever since I’ve set my eyes on you, my world has changed. You have spun my world around, just like we did, at the ballroom, last week. I still have the rose that fell from your ear. A subtle reminder that your beauty is eternal. I have kept it hidden in my Diary, where the pages are filled with memories of you. I yearn to see you again. And this is why I write to you. To invite you for a Grand supper at the Royal Palace, tomorrow evening at 5pm. I do hope you kindly accept this invitation as a sense of gratitude, as nothing else would give me greater pleasure than you dining with me.
I eagerly await your response.
Yours humbly,
Fitzwilliam Darcy Esquire.

Love Letter Ko-Fi Commission for @sounddrive / @magicianapprenticelyra ! [click for best quality; full text is under the cut]
From: Portia To: Lyra Prompt: Sealed with a kiss 💋
commissions are closed, but you can still buy me a coffee! ☕
To Whom It May Concern (Lyra):
You (yes, you!) are cordially invited to the most exclusive gala in Vesuvia, for the celebration of the fourth birthday of Her Ladyship Miss Pepiña “Pepi” Pavlovna Devorak, Esquire.
This Saturday, in the Grand-er Ballroom (that’s what I call the smaller one on the second floor), at three o’clock, the Countess is throwing a party for Pepi! This is only her second birthday in Vesuvia, but I didn’t really have the means to celebrate her first, so we’re going to party twice as hard this time. There will be food, and drinks, but, most importantly—pets! Furry, feathery, scaly, and all other kinds of friends are welcome and encouraged to attend, so stick a party hat on Nook, because Pepi’s very excited to see her favorite shapeshifting cutie for her birthday. I’d say “tell him to behave”, but I don’t think he’s the one we have to worry about.
It shouldn’t be too wild or crazy of a party. Most everyone will be keeping an eye on their pets, anyway. And in lieu of gifts, Her Ladyship the soon-to-be birthday girl has requested tummy scratches upon your arrival. Or ear scritches. She’s really not picky. But she has way too many toys already, so there’s definitely no need to get her any more.
There isn’t really a dress code (the birthday girl probably won’t be wearing anything at all), either, so just bring your beautiful self and be ready for some cuddles!
See you soon,
Portia xx

no one knew about it except for a select few mermaid @!&)wedding dresses under 500
We hope our guests would feel special and be fully immersed in the celebrations, so we had this crazy idea of hosting our own wedding. This was a secret between us and no one knew about it except for a select few mermaid wedding dresses under 500. As our guests sat in the ballroom waiting for our arrival, we played multiple videos that were recorded and created over the years of travelling instead of our wedding photos. We also kicked off the celebration with a short video on how we defined our relationship, followed by our first march in.

Music Monday: Latest Track This Week!
Tumblr media
Embark on a musical odyssey with Adam Humphries’ curated indie playlist, a diverse tapestry of indie gems that will tantalize your auditory senses. Noisy guitars reign supreme on debut ROWSIE album - "I", out now via Ivy RecRods! An incredible album from start to finish, even if I do say so myself. For me, I just can't find anything bad to say about it because it is just that good. Each track is filled full of electrifying energy, superb rock riffs and nitty-gritty vocals and Americana influences. The album is a mixture which deals with themes like, peace, love and conflict.  https://open.spotify.com/album/1vUCgkKi4WXtgQDkQSm0k6?si=dMGnT_uVSMq0OwjMXc2s-g LOUIS AND THE SHAKES - Release cinematic epic "scared." Watch Official Video Today A beautifully constructed video with a diary-style look to it. I like how it's done in black and white rather than color as it looks more somber. In videos like these that I do enjoy is how the basic idea revolves around a single guy as he goes around in his own thoughts. When I watched this, I enjoyed the narrative in that the song is a story about a guy WATCH THE VIDEO HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnURE_rbQEg STREAM ON ALL SERVICES HERE: https://lnk.to/LATSscared Beans on Toast - Releases "Send Me A Bird" Centrepiece || New Album: 'The Toothpaste And The Tube' out 1 Dec I already knew of Beans on Toast's music and songwriting as I wrote about his music a while back during one of his earlier releases so I was looking forward to this, and needless to say, i wasn't disappointed. fics when the hate each other but end in love??? and fics when one of them admire/has a crush for the other but doesn't have like a close relationship (i mean that they aren't so good friends it seems they're already a couple!) thank you baby!
Hate to Love Fics
Love Is A Rebellious Bird  : Louis is the concertmaster of the London Symphony Orchestra, Harry is the New! and Exciting! interim conductor/ex-cello prodigy who “has made Mozart cool again” according to Esquire Magazine (Louis hates him immediately, which is definitely why he internet stalked him in his dark bedroom late at night that one time), and Niall is the best.  Zayn and Liam are around too.
Unbelievers : It’s Louis’ senior year, and he’s dead set on doing it right. However, along with his pair of cleats, a healthy dose of sarcasm and his ridiculous best friend, he’s also got a complicated family, a terrifyingly uncertain future, and a mortal enemy making his life just that much worse. Mortal enemies “with benefits” was not exactly the plan.Or: The one where Louis and Harry definitely aren’t friends, and football is everything.
Soft Hands, Fast Feet, Can’t Lose : American Uni AU. Harry Styles is a frat boy football star from the wealthy Styles Family athletic dynasty. A celebrity among football fans, he knows how to play, he knows how to party, and he knows how to fuck (all of which is well known among his legion of admirers). Louis Tomlinson is a student and an athlete, but his similarities to Harry end there. Intelligent, focused, independent, and completely uninterested in Harry’s charms, Louis is an anomaly in a world ruled by football. A bet about the pair, who might be more similar than they originally thought, brings them together. Shakespeare, ballet, Disney, football, library chats, running, accidental spooning, Daredevil and Domino’s Pizza all blend into one big friendship Frappucino, but who will win in the end?
Young & Beautiful : Louis, to his horror, attends an elitist university in which the name Zayn Malik means something, Niall Horan doesn’t stop talking, there are pianos everywhere, and Harry Styles, only son of a drug-addled, clinically insane ex-rocker, has a perfect smile and empty eyes.
Where Your Heart Is : Louis is ready for his brand new adventure. So what if he suffers from a genetic condition that prevents him from being touched? College is going to be awesome. It has to. Karma kind of owes him right now. Forget about his overprotective mother, or Liam– his entirely too chipper step brother– or his mess of a roommate. Forget about the gloves he has to wear at all times. He’s here to expand his knowledge, write and drown himself in books – No matter how distracting ‘Hallway Boy’ may be– The obnoxious, flirty frat wannabe determined to become the bane of Louis’ existence.Or, a college AU set in San Francisco where two lost boys who seemingly have nothing in common find inspiration, each other, and themselves in the process.
Learning to breathe : He’s playing football at one of the top universities in England and he should love everything about his life right now, but instead he’s moving backwards. How does your past fit into your present? Louis is still figuring it out.
Shake Me Down : Harry’s new to college, fresh out of Catholic school and conversion therapy camp, and Louis runs the campus LGBTQIA organization.
You Drive Me Round The Bend : In which Louis is a spoilt rich kid who’s always on the phone while he drives and Harry is a struggling musician making his way down the mountain. It’s just a matter of time before they crash and burn.
Wings to Break Your Fall : Strip club AU. Harry’s work and family are keeping him busy. He really isn’t looking for a relationship, doesn’t want one. He just wants Louis. Problem is, Louis has other plans.
Dance To The Distortion : Louis accidentally breaks Harry’s camera lens and in order to get it fixed, they decide to participate in a romantic couples study. The only issue is that they are not actually couple. Well that and the fact they cannot stand each other.
Resist Everything Except Temptation : The one where Louis is the commodore’s son who is forced to become a part of Harry’s crew when he is captured.
With a Whimper : Dystopian AU. Louis has been alone for too long to remember how not to be, and Harry has too much to worry about to deal with a scrawny, wild, stranger.
You’re Cold And I Burn : Louis’ love for pretty colors and aesthetics, paired with his immense passion for painting beautiful flowers has stars in his eyes and thoughts of a successful career.unfortunately, budding artists will struggle at first, so, cue the unwanted roommate. it only gets worse when the new addition is a sarcastic, flirty, and style-ignorant annoyance. all complete with a dingy leather jacket and a vast array of tattoos.
You’ve got to see yourself from far and wide: Harry and Louis meet at a very early age under all the wrong circumstances, which leads them to absolutely loathe each other for years on end. Eventually they both make it as professional football players in (very) rival teams, but are suddenly bought by the same club and depend on one another to either make it or break it at the height of their careers. With a side of sports journalist (and bridge friend) Niall, teammate Liam and wannabe football rep Zayn. They say that there’s a fine line between love and hate. That line might as well be shaped as a football trophy.
Walk That Mile : A Route 66 AU where falling in love was never part of the plan.
Tainted Saints and Velvet Vices : A self-fulfilling Hogwarts AU in which Louis is new to seventh year and Harry is the resident devil-may-care Slytherin set to make his entire experience a living misery. Due to less than favourable circumstances they’re forced to forge an unwilling, tentative relationship for their own survival. Repressed emotions, decidedly unromantic ballroom dancing, Triwizard Tournament tasks, creative jinxes and twilight flying above the Forbidden Forest ensue.
Pining (without being close friends) Fics
In This Light: Harry is a wardrobe stylist who likes to live in the moment, and Louis is a popstar who looks dreamy in double breasted jackets. Harry never stood a chance.
Way in the World : The one where Harry has a knee injury and an embarrassing crush on Manchester United’s pretty number ten.
Adore You : Against his wishes, Harry spends the holidays at his family’s summer estate, and is reluctantly pulled into a courtship he didn’t ask for. Harry doesn’t want to get married, but Louis does. They don’t fit, but then again they really, really do.
Home To You : At fifteen, Harry wrote his first song for an oblivious seventeen year old Louis Tomlinson. Ten years later he’s a singer/songwriter who cant find any words for his second album and Louis is a closeted actor tired of LA. They both try to run from the things weighing them down and in the process, they find each other.
Just Tell Me the Song and I’ll Sing It  : Louis is an architecture student who can only think about the future. Harry is a baseball player who can only think about right now. Both are lonely for different reasons. Boybands bring them together.Or, this may just be a long love letter to Louis’ voice, I’m not sure.Based on the following prompt: Harry and Louis are university students who go to the same bar on the weekends. The bar has karaoke and Louis likes to sing Disney/Musical/Boyband songs sometimes. Harry thinks he’s cute so he starts singing Disney/Musical/Boyband songs and flirting with him while he’s on stage.
Sun-kissed Hurricane, Perfect Storm : Harry is the quiet kid in the back of his statistics class who writes a lot and dreams about Louis’ cheekbones . Louis needs a statistics tutor ASAP before he flunks and the quiet kid in the back of the class seems like a good choice. Harry wants to help Louis however he can and Louis wants to see how much he can make Harry blush.

Arrivals & Departures - 29 April 1933 Celebrate Willie Hugh Nelson Day!
Willie Hugh Nelson (born April 29, 1933) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, actor, producer, author, poet, and activist. The critical success of the album Shotgun Willie (1973), combined with the critical and commercial success of Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1978), made Nelson one of the most recognized artists in country music. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960's as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound. Nelson has acted in over 30 films, co-authored several books, and has been involved in activism for the use of biofuels and the legalization of marijuana.
Born during the Great Depression and raised by his grandparents, Nelson wrote his first song at age seven and joined his first band at ten. During high school, he toured locally with the Bohemian Polka as their lead singer and guitar player. After graduating from high school in 1950, he joined the air force but was later discharged due to back problems. After his return, Nelson attended Baylor University for two years but dropped out because he was succeeding in music. During this time, he worked as a disc jockey in Texas radio stations and a singer in honky-tonks. Nelson moved to Vancouver, Washington, where he wrote "Family Bible" and recorded the song "Lumberjack" in 1956. He also worked as a disc jockey at various radio stations in Vancouver and nearby Portland Oregon. In 1958, he moved to Houston, Texas, after signing a contract with D Records. He sang at the Esquire Ballroom weekly and he worked as a disk jockey. During that time, he wrote songs that would become country standards, including "Funny How Time Slips Away", "Hello Walls", "Pretty Paper", and "Crazy". In 1960 he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and later signed a publishing contract with Pamper Music which allowed him to join Ray Price's band as a bassist. In 1962, he recorded his first album, ...And Then I Wrote. Due to this success, Nelson signed in 1964 with RCA Victor and joined the Grand Ole Opry the following year. After mid-chart hits in the late 1960's and the early 1970's, Nelson retired in 1972 and moved to Austin, Texas. The ongoing music scene of Austin motivated Nelson to return from retirement, performing frequently at the Armadillo World Headquarters.
In 1973, after signing with Atlantic Records, Nelson turned to outlaw country, including albums such as Shotgun Willie and Phases and Stages. In 1975, he switched to Columbia Records, where he recorded the critically acclaimed album Red Headed Stranger. The same year, he recorded another outlaw country album, Wanted! The Outlaws, along with Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser. During the mid-1980's, while creating hit albums like Honeysuckle Rose and recording hit songs like "On the Road Again", "To All the Girls I've Loved Before", and "Pancho and Lefty", he joined the country supergroup The Highwaymen, along with fellow singers Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson.
In 1990, Nelson's assets were seized by the Internal Revenue Service, which claimed that he owed $32 million. The difficulty of paying his outstanding debt was aggravated by weak investments he had made during the 1980's. In 1992, Nelson released The IRS Tapes: Who'll Buy My Memories?; the profits of the double album—destined to the IRS—and the auction of Nelson's assets cleared his debt. During the 1990's and 2000's, Nelson continued touring extensively, and released albums every year. Reviews ranged from positive to mixed. He explored genres such as reggae, blues, jazz, and folk.
Nelson made his first movie appearance in the 1979 film The Electric Horseman, followed by other appearances in movies and on television. Nelson is a major liberal activist and the co-chair of the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), which is in favor of marijuana legalization. On the environmental front, Nelson owns the bio-diesel brand Willie Nelson Biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oil. Nelson is also the honorary chairman of the advisory board of the Texas Music Project, the official music charity of the state of Texas.
