Never before [Eteocles and Polynices' climactic duel] has Statius compared either Oedipal brother to a boar, the animal strongly associated with Tydeus both in narrative reality (because of his boar’s-hide cloak) and in similes. The implications of this new association are dramatic and relate to themes of pollution and shifting identity in the epic. Polynices and Tydeus were introduced as men / one [mistakes] for beasts, the one wearing a lion’s skin, the other a boar’s-hide cloak. Tydeus’ sharp decline in the moral realm has been charted by similes as he drops from gorged lion to filthy bear. Polynices, originally a bull mismatched with his own brother but emotionally paired with Tydeus, now drops to the level of the boar, the worst aspect of that dear fratricidal friend, the self- and hero-self-destructive Tydeus.

Polynices and Eteocles kill each other, but Oedipus is also murdering both from beyond the grave. All three are also killing Antigone, their strife makes her death inevitable as well. Fratricide, sororicide and filicide all at once...

Antigone story is so dramatic I love it

Here am gonna do a little study about each character

So first with the MC Antigone : dramatic yet lovely in her audacity to go against Creon's order. I love a strong female lead. A little bit repetitive. Big big naïve energy and has a hero complexe. Surprised she dies when IT'S LITERALLY WHAT HER SISTER TOLD HER. kinda sad she killed herself. But loved her lamentations.

Ismene (the sis): the only sane one in THAT family. Wanted a good vibe ended being a Labdacien TT. Like she didn't ask for this malediction SHE JUST WANTED A NORMAL LIFE. Definitely depressed. Hates everyone but her suicidal family. Weirdly wants to live

Creon (the oncle): Soooo he must had daddy issues. Like, the need to control EVERYTHING is just not it. I have a love hate relationship with him. Saw he was in the bad, tried to salvage his situation, sadly he was too late 😔. But yeah, a BIG morally grey character energy. Mood.

Hémon:l(the cousin/fiance): THE MAIN CHARACTER FOR ME. he was sassy, quirky, in love. BIG DADDY ISSUES. Was in love with his cousin (Antigone). Sweet home Alabama. Suicide is not the answer baby. Had a good strat. Could have been the best king of Thebes. Anyway BEST CHARACTER AND THE FUNNIEST.

The Devin: was not having it with the drama. Just wanted to cook the chicken. Disgusted with the carnage perfume Thebes was having. Did not come to play. Owned up Creon like the little kid he was. King of the malediction.

The chorale : a bunch of old gossipers. Love them. They were the tea. Played the cause and the consequences of the end of the play. Need to work on their songs tho.

The gard: was here for five seconds AND WAS ICONIC FOR EACH OF THEM. He was the moment and THE COMIC RELIEF.

The messenger: been their done that. Man saw three murders on one day and didn't bath an eyelash. Yep, he's cool I fuck with him

Polynice (the best dead bro): the cause of everything. WHY DID YOU GO WITH ARGOS U MOTHER FUCKER TT

Eteocles (the forgettable bro): attention seeker. And a jealous bitch. Didn't want to give the throne look where we are.

Anyway that is it.

#he's ismene he's antigone he's his mother he's his father's child and he spits on that old man's face.#choose me and leave your brother antigone im the only one who's ever died for you. and antigone cant leave them just as he cant leave her #he's a crucial part of the dying-for game. polynices and eteocles die for each other. antigone dies for polynices. haemon dies for antigone #(and of course eurydice dies for haemon.)#he takes on what should be ismene's rightful role in the narrative (the last one standing killing herself for the unjustly killed)#but because ismene is cursed to live he must die against his father's commands and he does so happily.#he recontextualizes the whole thing. the beloved now dies for his love it's no longer the brother dying for his blood.#and of course this was a story about the deadly fate of love all along. they're oedipus's children they had no chance at normality.#and haemon steps into the narrative reneges the father keeping him from the family death chain and goes to join his cousins in death-for.#antigone #im so normal about him. im biting him and shaking him around

ohh i'm an idiot. eteocles (king of thebes) and eteoclus (one of the seven against thebes in some versions) are different people!! all this time i've been like "whoa there are versions where eteocles switches sides?? how the hell does that work? well i guess i'll come across it at some point and it'll all make sense"

i'm so used to the -os/-es to -us change from greek i didn't even SEE it

#i READ the aeschylus play earlier this year and that one has eteoclus and i DIDN'T NOTICE #i was pondering like... oh maybe eteocles is undercover for a bit?? maybe he impersonates someone else to infiltrate them??#the version in my head was so intriguing
