I'm sad that Star Trek: Lower Decks was cancelled. All the talent did the best they could to wrap up the final season and it was okay. But I can feel a yearning for more in it, it wasn't done with what it had to say (and I think it had a LOT of important things to say, that it dragged before us using humor as its vehicle.)
I think my biggest takeaway from it as a series though is that
Star Trek desperately needs a transfusion of its own wackiness into its core experience, ASAP.
Not every show needs to be a comedy. But Star Trek is the oldest TV show fandom active and well-known today. This puts it in a really troublesome spot.
Trek has its roots in radio dramas, okay? And frontier cowboy exploration stuff. With a little bit of military or procedural DNA. Without the sci-fi set pieces, that's what Star Trek started out as, this is WHY its ensemble cast stuff was important originally, but very few of these influences survive in our pop culture. This means that the shorthand Star Trek relied on in the past is NOT being baked into brand new humans now. Which means NO cruise control for Star Trek, EVERY new show is having to meet audiences in a strange place, as a stranger.
You can see this in the anxiety of how to keep it alive, by its owners, producers, etc. Every new Star Trek show that comes out has to be 'worthy' of a legacy but also not alienating for new audiences and also low-risk and also competitive with modern norms and also can't make die-hard fans angry... this is impossible.
But a little bit of wacky can handle that. You can use wacky as a vehicle to communicate non-wacky ideas: about the setting for new audiences, about the show's scope, about the characters, about expectations.
At this point there is just too much BS to ever actually whack through and trying to do it just makes shows seem insecure, or unfocused, or too trying-to-impress-us. But giving up on that BS can easily cost a story its identity, trying to appeal to modern Netflix Expectations. The best thing to do when you can't resolve everyone's competing intentions is help us all laugh. Then you can put what you have to offer on the table.

we all know what she's doing with them i think. in those lonely moments where living on her own with just her dog becomes too much, she pulls them up on her phone and remembers the good times she had with her friends. that's why she takes them in the first place, to have something tangible remaining from those incredible, sometimes live-changing experiences. to have proof that yes that happened, she didn't make it up
and then she promises herself to make them take more photos the next time they meet, and to take more videos and preserve those moments somehow. because she can't repeat those experiences, can't experience English tea for the first time again, can't be there for Pearl's first snowball fight again and so many other firsts she shared with them

Speaking of justifying changes to the litcheral canon because they appeal to me more, I tend to think of both Kevesi and Agnians as bleeding actual blood, but also sort of bleeding sparkly ether particles at the same time.
Essentially, all living beings are composed of ether, but without being constantly circulated as a part of some being's vital functions -- if it's just sitting there as a static lump -- ether doesn't really have strong bonds that would hold it together. What happens is that the Flame Clocks generate such an insane etheric low pressure zone that all ether-based life forms that aren't actively sustaining themselves start to actively deteriorate, rather than slowly dissolving like they would on Bionis or Alrest.
It's a bit like how the boiling point of water is dramatically reduced in a low-pressure environment -- an active Flame Clock is basically a localised ether vacuum, so anything that is in the process of decomposing into ether will do so almost instantly. This is also why an empty Flame Clock will instantly kill anyone bonded to it -- consuming the ether the people tending to it consist of.
In a bit of seredipity this also means that most Kingdom soldiers aren't truly aware of the level of gore and gristle involved in fighting, especially because healing magic effectively injects ether back into where a void is forming from the decomposition process. They very rarely see blood unless they're very far away from their Flame Clock.

across the spiderverse is rotting my brain from the inside out
ive updated my old spidersona (lennie anthony, the wolf spider) but now shes got an ally, her younger sister: reese anthony, the dart spider.
lennie is actually the second spider man, with reese being the first. reese doesn't have any unique powers, shes just a normal human and her main piece of gear is her set of four grappling hooks
lennie is the one who was bit by the spider. along with the usual spider man power set, lennie can see in the dark and her eyes glow in low light. she's also has paralyzing venom and a retractable stinger in the palm of each of her hands. lastly she can camouflage herself and suit by changing colors. its color based camouflage so its easier to spot when she's moving
