The fannish conundrum:
Not enough people are fans of this, I have no-one to talk to

So many people love this, and I have so many people to talk to, and all of them are wrong

Tumblr is probably not the right place for this, but if I’d like to have a chance of more than 2 people seeing it, it’s this or twitter and fuck no.
Anyway!
I did nano and predictably got side tracked half way through building a better writing tool, because I couldn’t afford the shiny ones and the one I had wasn’t quite working for me.
Fast forward a few months I’ve nearly finished it (oh god the unit tests) but then I thought, hey, maybe others too are not quite vibing with their tools? Or maybe things could be fannished up a little?
So if anyone has any things they really wished a writing tool did, now is the time to mention it. If there’s interest, I’ll stick community and supporter versions up.

Note
Fannish plegg carton culture, specifically protogenic-endogenic plegg culture that later finds itself to be full of permanent resident soulbonds is —
In very very early childhood:
*Projections literally playing H.O.R.S.E or whatever that basketball game is. Of course the main fronter never played, because they are too short.*
"Huh!! Well I mean those barbecue sauce was spicy before but it's 0.05 seconds later and I feel completely different as a person and also this barbecue sauce is no longer spicy. Oh well. The teacher called me a liar over barbecue sauce so I'm gonna be a shithead to them and have a meltdown"
In middle school:
"What would Gohan do if he was in this world???"
"What would Jayfeather do if he were in this world??"
"OMG. WHAT WOULD. IZAYA ORIHARA DO IF HE WAS IN THIS SITUATION JIST SOME MIDDLE SCHOOLER NOW"
*Has full-ass slow changing "see through my eyes" quasi-ceremonies based solely on vibes since we didn't have innerworld completely built yet*
*Chasing each other in hallways and all people saw was a small autistic child running for no reason lol*
"Why the fuck can I never feel my face when something horrible happens to us me? Also I relate too much to Silver from Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver"
In high school:
"Yep just Gon and Killua from Hunter×Hunter chillin' over there. Nobody can see 'em and these feel pretty distinct from hallucinations considering I can't literally see them. Eh. Maybe just imagination."
*Checking out a pro-endogenic blog in 2015* "Yup I am just a curious singlet"
*Still chasing ourselves through hallways just less or more hidden because people are stupid.* Why the fuck am I so angry all of the time. Why the fuck do I feel like there should be more to all of this.
"Hhhh Illumi Zoldyck from Hunter×Hunter patting my head is completely normal. So is pretending I am Ethan from Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver I'M NOT PRETENDING ThOUGH??? I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO CALL THIS all I know is I am definitely Ethan, , not Ethan? And Illumi Zoldyck is petting my head and we are working at a McDonald's right now. What the fuck is happening" *Proceeds to ignore this and never tell anyone until we are today years old*
"My vitriol for Hisoka Morrow of Hunter×Hunter has three sides to it. I hate him and his canon. I have no clue how to explain the other two sides to this and I cannot stand my friend obsessing over this character" *Proceeds to also ignore this one too, and never tell anyone until we are today years old*
In university:
"Hey 30 year old Gladion idk if you're actually a figment of my imagination anymore but yeah sure your sister Lily and her daughter Mei can chill in here in this brain for awhile. Does this mean I'm genderfluid lol?" (Narrator: this is, in fact, NOT what genderfluidity is supposed to feel like.)
"Oh well I guess Itonai from Assassination Classroom is just decided to sleep in the bed tonight. Get the fuck off of my bed ya lazy bum. Noooo it's just wei — get back in our head you freak (//lovingly, platonic)"
*Just feeling fucking uncomfortable around sysmedicalists but especially the sysmedicalists who were anti-endogenic as well (yes there are pro-endogenic sysmeds!! Uhm but definitely not plural, nope)*
"I am now talking to these projections while brushing my teeth. Lucifer from The Devil Is A Part-Timer has literally crash-landed into our brain along with Emilia Justina. Wtf?"
*Discovers the word endogenic yet again and gets the weird euphoria again*
*Maybe our late second year at university, at fucking 11PM, after anime club finishes — Kusuo Saki just fucking chilling on top of the table via projection* "Heeey so remember that one time in high school where you had weird daydreams about that pink-haired psychic boy and the blonde with drills? Welp, Mami Tomoe picked me up on the way here —" *Queue freakout of the main fronter at this point*
-----------
SO ANYWAYS that is. Uh. Some Stuff(tm) yaaay, anyways the good thing about this is we don't think our queer shit would ever, ever be as fucking weird as our plurality shit in the context of the societal context and chronological context we, Rusanya, live in, so figuring out we're aceplex (since we found the plurality first and asexuality is more of a veil) was mostly just an "AHA okay then lol" and we just kind of slap every label on the planet onto us that we like that we think applies, both on an individual and collective level. :D

Fellas, is it gay to gaze into your previously-thought-dead battle buddy's eyes while you gently clasp each other's forearms as you sit at a candlelit table in a secluded courtyard after helping each other achieve a measure of peace?
Asking for a friend.

Angharad may not be as experienced as Toast, as adept as Capable, as intuitive as Dag, nor as kind-hearted as Cheedo, but the Immortan did not declare her Splendid for nothing. She hears the wails of the Wretched and the jeering of the War Boys. She sees how the Sons flock to the Immortan like loyal dogs, how he wears his armor and badges in arrogant denial.
There has been a rage simmering inside Angharad for as long as she can remember. It had made her a vicious Pup, but she had tried to put it aside along with her white paint years ago. She knew it would be of no use here, would do little more than drive her mad.
But she feels it bursting fully to life now and welcomes it.”

Are there different terms for AUs that change canon vs ones that are set in whole new worlds? I'm wracking my brain and I can't seem to think of anything other than a "Fusion AU", but I know that's not it

Are there any in-person fannish conventions (small, volunteer cons not comic-cons) on the Eastern half of the USA? I know there are a few online, but I'm looking for an in-person vacation.

i remember when elementary first came out and bbc sherlock fans were saying elementary's sherlock was OOC becuz he wasn't an asshole just becuz he was compassionate to victims and people suffering hard circumstances
putting the claims of OOC-ness aside, but it's clear they actually didn't watch or didn't pay attention becuz elementary's sherlock is absolutely an asshole. he is arrogant and entitled and rude and aggressive to people who impede his investigations even if they are also victims and hostile to his brother for no discernible reason
the difference from bbc's sherlock is that elementary's sherlock actually has consequences for this behavior. it strains his relationships, it gets him fired from his job, it gets him into legal trouble, it hinders his investigations, it gets his friend shot
we're used to modern adaptions of sherlock prancing around being callous and inconsiderate to everyone around him and ppl grudgingly putting up with it becuz, well, he's an eccentric genius what can you do
elementary's sherlock is compassionate to people who've suffered becuz he knows what it's like to suffer, but he's also an unmitigated asshole, he just doesn't get a free pass on it

nobody gets to have the last word about canon interpretation
nobody
yeah, i hear some of u already going ‘oh, but the writer(s)’
and no. not even the author gets a say once the book or whatever is available for public consumption
no one, not even the author of my fave comic, gets to tell me how my brain *should* interpret the work they have, by one means or other, sold me for my own entertainment
as a writer, i totally see their side. most writers hate to acknowledge that people are out there reading their stuff, taking their words the ‘wrong’ way. but we don’t have a soap box to stand on, you know? we voluntarily put the output of our brains out there to be consumed. some of us even get paid for it. if we don’t like the fact that other brains do not work exactly the same way ours do, that’s tough titty, my dudes
this same concept applies within fandom circles. if the author doesn’t get the last word, sure as hell no one else does. no single fan or group of fans has the last word on canon interpretation. if they act like they do, they’re gatekeeping without a leg to stand on, bullshitting themselves and their fellow fans
don’t get me wrong, i understand what it feels like to run across one of those takes that is soooo bad… just remember, someone else is reading your take and thinking the same thing
i understand the desire to go: well, yes, but
there’s no but. if it’s that way for one of us, it’s that way for all of us. if not, eventually the midden hits the windmill. i have seen so many fandom implosions that stem from a select group of entitled assholes who think their ‘but’ is the exception that counts
no buts. no exceptions. no extenuating circumstances. no excuses
i may hate your take, but i concede without argument your right to it, along with your right to enjoy fandom in whatever way gives you the most joy so long as you’re not actively harming other fans. i hope y’all will extend me and mine the same courtesy

Honestly just the fact that Saga's love for Casey is so all-encompassing and so inextricable from her love of her family that she's willing to fight the story to death about him going free fucking guts me every time I think about it. She's not sacrificing anything and furthermore it's wrong to ask her to sacrifice anything. She is deserving, of her life, of her daughter's life, of her partner's life, she is the hero of her story and it's not fair to ask her to trade anything in exchange for the privilege. She shouldn't have to, so she's not gonna.

It's 2024. I have been participating in fandom for 40 years. This is a ramble commemorating some history I've experienced along the way.
In 1984, I attended my first convention, and made a beeline for the one long row of covered tables in the Dealer's Room that was, according to the whispered lore of my friends, 'the one'. "um", I said, very suavely and coherently, except for how it was totally the opposite of those things, "I'm here for the... for the, uh. For-"
"Come around here," the man behind the table said with exhausted ennui, so I went around, and he lifted up the table skirt next to him and pointed to rows and rows of boxes underneath the line of tables. "It's all under here."
It was all under there. Along with about five older ladies with glasses, graying hair, cardigans. Flipping through slash zines and chatting in whispered voices like old friends (which of course they were). I noticed one of them had the good sense to be wearing kneepads. I was still too young and ablebodied to need kneepads when crawling on a carpeted floor, but I immediately found her preparedness skills to be both impressive and hot. "You're new," one of the ladies whispered to me--a bit warily, which made sense. "Are you sure you're in the right place?"
In the faint light (the kneepads lady had also come prepared with a flashlight, additional practicality hotness points for her) I grabbed a comb-bound book with a heavy line art piece on the cover, featuring a musclebound Captain Kirk getting righteously and enthusiastically plowed by a stern-yet-ebullient Spock. "This," I said, pointing helpfully at the cover, like I was trying to make myself understood in a language I had only the vaguest knowledge of. "I'm here for this."
Outside at the convention, most of the attendees were wearing large homemade circular pins that shrieked 'K/S is BS!!!'1. But underneath the table, we reveled in the forbidden.
***
In 1985, I fell very hard for Starsky & Hutch fandom. Which was simply referred to at the time as 'the other fandom', because there were only two. We were upstarts. Many fannish elders predicted that it was just a phase.
***
The 'circulating library' was a massive stack of barely-legible pages that smelled strongly of mimeograph ink. When you were on the list, you would write stories while you waited for your turn, and when the big box was mailed to you, you would read everything (new finds, old favorites), add your own sloppily-typed or hastily-mimeographed stories, and then mail the whole thing to the next person. For me, at the time, it was an extremely expensive indulgence--but my favorite one.
***
By 1990, slash fandom had grown enough that I no longer knew everyone in it, which was both thrilling and a bit daunting. A young woman at a convention waited for me after a panel I was part of (I think it was 'writing impactful smut' or something like that), and said she had a question she didn't want to ask in a group setting. I'd heard that before. I said that's fine, go ahead and ask; and she came out with: "Why do you have to be gay?"
I blinked. "Is... that a problem?"
She looked annoyed. "Yes, because your stories are on all the recommendation lists and in all the top zines, but if you're gay and I read something you wrote and I get hot from it that makes me gay, and I'm not gay."
"Wow." I grinned, I couldn't help it. It probably made me look very predatory-dyke-about-to-score-a-toaster. Whatever, it was enough to make her back away from me fast.
When I thought about it later that night, I wondered what it would be like not to be the only queer person in slash fandom.
***
By 1997, slash started appearing on the internet. Many fannish elders claimed it was the death knell of slash fandom, or dismissed it as 'just a phase'.
***
Anyway, I wrote all this for myself as a commemoration of sorts, but if you took the time to read it--thank you. Love you, fandom. I always will.
1 In those days, m/m fandom was known as 'slash', which grew from the fannish shorthand where 'K&S' meant a story of Kirk and Spock having adventures or tribulations or what have you, and 'K/S' meant a story of Kirk and Spock getting it on (Kirk divided by Spock or Spock into Kirk--it was mathy fannish humor and I was into it then and I still am now). Slash was decidedly unpopular in the fannish world in 1984, and there was a concerted effort to force slash authors, artists, and fans out of 'mainstream' fannish public life. Hence, under the table.

I am also chuckling like mad at the people who are still so down on Jade, like "she doesn't even have basic customer service skills" and babes I get where you're coming from but the UK is not a tip culture. Customer service is thus very very VERY different. I worked at a move theater (in the North, which is much friendlier than London!) while I was at uni, and regularly had coworkers ask me why I was being so fucking chipper and polite to people. I had CUSTOMERS look at me in befuddlement when I'd chirp "enjoy your movie!" Jade keeps a neutral/pleasant smile on her face, she doesn't actively say anything nasty to anyone, that's pretty fucking good. Also, I think she might be nicer to everyone else, and her busting Nate's balls is just gonna be their thing.

Not While By You I Stand And Hum
“You. Student,” the witcher growls, voice rough and low.
“My name is Jaskier,” he answers, crossing his arms.
“Jaskier. You really want to help?”
“Yes,” he says, before he can question the safety or intelligence of it.
The man’s body tenses, as if bracing himself. “I need to get into the sewers underneath the university campus,” he says through gritted teeth as though it physically hurts him to have to make a request of Jaskier.
“You can’t get into them from the rest of the sewers?”
“No, they’re closed off.”
“Hmm.” Jaskier thinks about it. Considers it carefully. Then he says, “Okay. I have an idea. Follow my lead, witcher.”
