(I Will Soon Be Offering) Private Guitar Lessons
Tumblr media
A few months ago one of my followers asked if I had ever thought about offering guitar lessons online via webcam. I replied that it was indeed something I had thought about but that I would need to give it more thought as to how I would approach teaching online, whether or not I had the proper equipment to provide a professional experience, how many students I could take on, and what exactly I could offer as a teacher. I also noted that I would have to create a suitable space in my apartment for hosting students. This last part took care of itself when my roommate moved out and I am presently converting his old bedroom into an office. As for the rest? Well I gave it some thought and I've hacked together reasonable solutions for most of those other issues, so I would like to announce that beginning later this winter/this spring I will be offering private one-on-one guitar lessons via webcam.
My Qualifications:
While I graduated with a degree in Classics and attended graduate school in that field, I was initially accepted into university as a music major on the basis of my guitar playing. It was only after a few years that I switched majors into Classics. In the end I still managed enough credits to claim a minor in music.
Before attending university I spent a year studying jazz theory/jazz improvisation at the college level.
Both prior to and concurrent with my college/university music education I studied classical guitar privately with a teacher for a little over a decade; through him I can claim teaching lineage back to Francisco Tárrega.
I have played in a few garage bands that never really went anywhere, performed with friends at house parties, jammed around as much as I could, and performed live as a solo guitarist.
I previously taught guitar while in university; this is not my first rodeo.
I have been playing guitar for a little over twenty three years.
What I Can Offer:
If you're a beginner I can happily guide your playing to a level where you would feel comfortable learning songs on your own, and we would start with learning basic chords, basic technique, and putting it all together into learning a few songs.
If you're past the beginner stage, I can take your playing to a level where you would be able to convincingly improvise a solo over a song, play more advanced songs, and sit in with a jam session.
If learning to read sheet music is a goal am able to assist with that.
If you're interested in beginner classical guitar I would feel comfortable teaching repertoire and technique to the level of Royal Conservatory of Music Grade Five examinations. Grade Five repertoire is typically the minimum requirement when auditioning on guitar for a university level music program in Canada. I have several guitar methods at my disposal for teaching technique, and access to a wide array of repertoire sheet music.
I am also able to teach theory as it pertains to playing the guitar and point you towards texts that from beginner levels up to basic harmonic analysis. I can teach you how chords are constructed, how they fit together into a progression, and the basic grammar of music.
Lessons, Pricing, What to Expect, What a Prospective Student Will Require:
The going rate for private music lessons is $40-$50 per hour and ranges up to well over $100 for some in demand teachers. My fee operates on a sliding scale with a floor of $20USD/$25CAD per hour. If you are comfortable paying the typical going rate, wonderful, if you are unable to afford that, we can work something out, no questions asked. Payment should be sent through PayPal or Interac e-transfer.
Due to chronic illness I can't take on more than five students a week. They needn't necessarily be the same five students every week; if a bi-weekly lesson schedule works better for a number of people, they can alternate. In the rare event that there is more demand than that mutuals and longtime followers will have priority.
What you need as a student: A guitar; a webcam; a microphone; a way of letting me hear your playing. This could mean having your microphone positioned so that I can hear your amplifier clearly, or by using a direct input. Feel free to shoot me a message if you want some recommendations for inexpensive DI-boxes and audio interfaces. Headphones would be a good idea too.
If you commit to more than one lesson the first will be free of charge. Your first lesson with me will look something like this: we'll talk about your goals and intentions i.e. what it is you hope to get out of taking guitar lessons and how far you want to take your playing. As we chat about that we can chart out a course to get you there, and then we'll just generally see where you're at. The rest of the lesson will be taken up with some pointers on properly caring for and tuning your instrument, and then we'll put some thought towards the way our bodies are posed, how we have the guitar positioned in relation to our bodies, exercising good hand ergonomics, and finding a playing position that is both comfortable and which allows for optimal freedom of movement.
I live in Toronto which is UTC -5 keep this in mind if you're interested in taking lessons and are located elsewhere.
I intend to do my best at being a trooper and toughing it out, and I will aim to not cancel lessons without fair warning, but the nature of my illness means that I may need to resort to this occasionally. You will need to be alright with this.
If you're interested, you can contact me here or at [email protected]. Hopefully I can get enough people interested that I can go about figuring out everyone's availability and drawing up a schedule.

Applications now open!
The Fall 2024 Fanauthor Workshop is a 7-week writing course led by Betts (@bettsfic). The workshop lends a supportive space to writers who identify as fans to receive constructive feedback on fanfiction, original fiction, or creative nonfiction.
Art by @emimayooo 💖
Where & When
We meet weekly over Zoom. You can apply for one of two sessions:
Group A: Wednesdays from Oct. 9 - Nov. 20, 12-2pm EST
Group B: Mondays from Oct. 7 - Nov. 18, 6-8pm EST
What
FAW is a feedback-oriented workshop with the occasional generative session. This means that each week we read 2 pieces submitted by participants, offer written feedback, and discuss them over Zoom. You'll be able to sign up for the week you would like to workshop your own piece, which can be anything under 6k words.
There may be weeks where, in lieu of workshopping, I present external readings and writing exercises. These sessions will be dependent on the number of participants. For example, if we have 10 participants and 6 workshop weeks, that means one week will be devoted to a reading discussion and generative activity.
I developed a workshop model that focuses mostly on affirmations and positivity, as well as descriptive over prescriptive feedback, which is to say, describing one's experience of reading rather than prescribing solutions to perceived problems. We also present improvement-oriented feedback, but avoid negativity, judgment, and pedantry. Week 1 is spent going over the model and how to give feedback.
About FAW
The first FAW was held in 2017 as an independent study in my MFA. I restarted it in 2022 and since then have led 9 sessions with a total of over 50 participants, about half of whom have participated in the workshop more than once.
Participation in the workshop includes entrance into the FAW community, an active Discord server where we host:
Ongoing accountability meetings, where we chat over Zoom about our projects and set goals for ourselves every other week
A monthly longform writing workshop, where writers can workshop any story between 6k and 100k words
A short story club, where we read and chat about original short form works
Events and activities like movie nights and co-op gaming
Scheduled write-ins and impromptu writing sprints
We also chat about writing and craft, offer resources, and share many, many pet photos.
In addition, participants of the workshop receive:
A one-hour consultation with me to go over your workshop feedback, come up with a plan for revision and/or publication, or anything else you’d like to discuss regarding your writing
Open enrollment in future workshops
Priority sign-ups for WTFS (Write the Fucking Story), WIP Cleanout, and other one-off generative sessions
Eligibility
Anyone over the age of 18 who considers themselves a participant of fandom and who is familiar with fanfiction may apply. A stable internet connection is also required.
Cost
The cost of the workshop is "pay what you can" with the recommended amount of $300. To be as inclusive as possible, I don't want money to be a deterrent for anyone interested in participating.
Payment (or notification of nonpayment) will be requested prior to the start of workshop via PayPal, Venmo, or Wise. You can also pay in installments.
Application requirements
To apply, you will need:
An informal cover letter discussing your fan history and goals as a (fan)writer (more specific instructions on submittable)
A short sample of your writing, either original work or fanfiction. This may be previously published/posted
You can apply via submittable. Applications close September 15.
FAQ under the cut
FAQ
Are there any content restrictions to what I can workshop?
The only restriction is word count (max 6k), with the following caveats:
If you workshop a piece in a form other than prose (for example, a script), your peers may not be able to offer constructive feedback on that aspect of the work. Participants are asked only to have a familiarity with prose.
Content warnings are required for each piece (if applicable), and participants who are uncomfortable reading certain subject matter may abstain from your workshop.
What is the time commitment of the workshop?
As a participant of the workshop, you'll be asked to:
Workshop any piece of your own prose up to 6k words, which will need to be uploaded to the group folder one week before your workshop.
Read 2 pieces per week, write out your individual crit, and attend the workshop itself.
What is the timeline of the workshop?
In week 1, we go over the syllabus and do a writing exercise. Weeks 2 through 7 will be a workshop, a discussion of an external reading, or a writing activity. Prior to the start of workshop, you'll be able to sign up for the week you would like to workshop your piece.
Structure of the sessions:
Question of the day
First workshop
Short break
Second workshop
We'll go over my workshop model and the syllabus in week 1.
Do I have to participate in the Zoom meetings (camera and mic on)?
Attending the workshop itself is required, and everyone is asked to offer at least one note of positive feedback on each piece, so mics are necessary. Cameras are preferred but not required.
You can't asynchronously participate, i.e. read the pieces and offer written feedback without attending the sessions.
Can workshop participants submit to OFIC Magazine?
Yes! Part of the reason I run the workshop is to inspire and promote the original work of fanwriters. You can follow us on tumblr @oficmag.
Who is running the workshop?
@bettsfic! In short, I lived a dreary cubicle life as a banker until I found fanfiction at 24. I loved it so much that I quit my job to get an MFA in creative writing. I loved the MFA so much that I became a writing teacher. I have some publications, awards, an agent, and 2 million words of fic on ao3. I don't have a book out yet but I'm getting there.
Currently I'm a writing coach and freelance editor. I also have a lowkey writing-related newsletter. And I've been answering writing advice asks on my blog for 10 years.
If you want an idea of the kind of writing activities I create, last summer I worked with @books on a workshop series which includes craft essays and some fun prompts.
If you're interested in my original work, my short story "Not If, When" is a good representation of my writing. For something darker, check out "Shut Up and Kill Me."
What is the workshop like?
Check out G's experience of attending the workshop. And here's some feedback from previous participants.
One final note: I'm working on updating the copy about the workshop on my website and move it over to OFIC's website. This post and Submittable has the most updated information on the workshop. If you have questions about discrepancies (or anything at all), you can shoot me an ask, DM me, or add me on Discord (I'm bettsfic there too). Or you can email me at [email protected].

A Shot In the Darkest Dark
Tumblr media
Benedict Bridgerton x (F) Reader
Summary: An agreement of terms that are not favorable for your future leads to conversations, moments of stiff air and inconsistency, walls and held hope.
Word Count: 2,393 Words
Author’s Note: welp I bet none of y’all saw this coming now did you, i guess you could call this a prologue to irreperable? thanks to the little bird in my inbox for this!! - arranged marriage, tension and fluff, all the fun things
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You’d just wish they’d cease the deliberations already. The walls of your family home seem to rattle and shake as the booming voice of your father comes from down the hall. Not even an hour prior a letterman had come to the door with a very detailed and lengthy compromise scrawled into the ink.
It wasn’t unknown to your mother or yourself that your father had been making questionable investments as of late. So much so that he’d begun to fault on payments he’d owed. The moment that he’d understood what the letter was detailing, he ushered you from the room, needing to discuss with your mother what he’d read.
However, you were not one to be left out of major implications, especially one where you’re not to be in the presence of the employed deliberators. That usually never bode well for you. An ear pressed to the rather light doors allowed you to catch the quick whispers of your name, a debt and a wedding.
Then your mother had launched onto a defense for your position, which was incredibly brave of her. They were still locked into their counter points to one another when dinner was called. Your mother, flush in the face, can barely look your father in the eye. Meanwhile, he is too busy shoveling the meal on his plate into his mouth to invite a conversation between the three of you. That doesn’t stop you from inciting one.
“Am I to just be left out of the running? Is there secrecy amongst us?” You knew the response already, it was your attempt at jolting your father into confession.
“Your father is shipping you off to London.” Your mama, always the curt one. Silverware clatters to the table and you meet the eyes of the only man in your life in hopes for an explanation. He fumbles on his words for a few moments before he can finally manage to get out the events that were unfolding.
“Your mother- I- we have been discussing the manner of our finances. As you know, we are facing a testing set of circumstances and… my partner was kind enough to offer a solution that does not involve a trade of currency.” This partner, however, was the son of his former partner. Your father had been evading this debt for years before the son had come across the missing funds. A conversation last week had revealed the hand that the Amberley house had been facing. The solution? A union of the second eldest son and Lord Amberley’s only child, his daughter - you.
Before you knew it, you were being shipped off to a home in London in order to prepare for a wedding that you had mere days to come to terms with. Stood in a shop with a French woman who wouldn’t dare say more than four words to you with your mother and soon-to-be mother in law in the room, you’re questioning exactly what you’re being greeted with.
At the very least, your new husband’s mother was a rare gemstone to be found. The woman had greeted you at the shop, by name, with a host of gifts for you and your mother (which was less than anticipated, considering you were approaching with very little to offer on your end) and then began to launch into tales of her family. A very large family, in fact, with children she was immensely proud of, fiercely dedicated to and overly enamored with. It did not come to be ungenuine though, not in the manner of people attempting to piece together some falsity in hopes to cushion their luck. No, no, Violet beamed as she spoke of her eldest daughter, now a duchess, her first grandchild - how she would be certain that her next one would have a great father on their side. Seeing that their father would be your husband.
Kind, charming, educated and brilliant, she said. Devoted to studying his passion for artistry and poetry, well versed in the society standards while also being an entertaining chap. There wasn’t a poor thing mentioned in terms of this gentleman. Even when the older women had slid out for a breath of air, the modiste mentioned how incredibly stunning the family was, including your groom.
Over dinner that night, you’d meet your fiance. Not a soul that had spoken of him had been exaggerating. Benedict Bridgerton was exactly as he’d been acclaimed to be. He graciously made his introductions to you and soon after made you chuckle with the comment he’d made under his breath. As you waited for the dinner hour to approach, he guided you around his family’s home.
“This home is so very far removed from what it once was. See, Daphne, Francesca and Elosie all used to share their quarters with one another when they were younger, as there were only three designated spaces in the home and well, my parents were rather the love birds, it would seem.” You could not fault yourself for the way you grinned at his stories. They continued as you approached his own quarters, littered with canvas and paint jars, the smell of turpentine overwhelmingly hitting your nostrils.
“I’d assume that you’d like children of your own? Your mother spoke very highly of your characteristics that would aide you in fatherhood.” His chin tucks over his shoulder in your direction, facing out the three panels of glass in the middle of his room.
“I do not believe that is… solely my decision to make, Ms. Amberley.” Feet stay planted despite their wish to step back in sheer surprise.
“Implying that you might forgo raising your own children? You speak so highly of your nephew, not to mention your siblings-”
“That is the furthest thing from what I am implying.” He cuts you off a moment, a swift apology leaving him for doing so. “What I am implying is such that- it is a discussion I wish to involve my wife in.” The manner in which he speaks it is solemn. Benedict’s feet come to a chair, where he settles for a moment, looking anywhere but the direction in which you stand.
“You wished to marry for love, did you not?” Your question catches him by surprise, leaving his eyes training forward to engage with yours.
“Well, I certainly did not anticipate my marriage to be a settlement for my father’s books. Not ever did I prepare for such a thing.” Slowly, you draw near, resting a hand on his shoulder.
“Nor did I.” The pale color of his irises come up in your direction, moving in time with his hand which takes yours.
“I am sorry that I have stripped you of the opportunity, Ms.” Your brows furrow as you shake your head.
“No, do not fret with such things Mr. Bridgerton. The choices have been made, there is no value in dwelling on matters we cannot manage by our own volitions.” The way his facial expression softened at your reassurance let you know that Benedict would always be compassionate toward you. If not as your husband, as your friend.
In three days time, the fanfare of the ceremony and following celebrations arrived just as you had in the glimmering showcase that was the carriage that the Bridgertons owned. The chapel was adorned in the most wonderful arrangements of flowers and foliage you’d ever seen. Coming from a countryside village there were countless items you’d never seen prior to today. The vivid colored flowers in your field of view being one of them, the intricate weaving pattern of your gown another, the ornate and sizeable stones on your neck being the final thing.
Benedict had insisted that you borrow the jewels from his mother’s collection. If you were not to have the spouse you desired, he was determined to make the rest of the day match the expectations you had conjured in your mind. He had been sincere in the conversations regarding your nuptials, even more so on making you as comfortable as possible.
The ceremony was rather quaint. It consisted of both your families, the extended and the near, a few family friends on your groom’s side. Your father did not work efficiently enough to keep very many friends. It would seem your luck would change as your last name did.
Benedict had taken it upon himself to write his own vows, something he mentioned he had hoped to do one day in brief conversations leading up to the event.
“My darling. I fear as though we embark on one of the most uncertain paths that the Lord provides for us in this life. For that is what He does, after all. He surrounds us with the light of the sun, the life of the botanicals that grow below us, the coursing of the rivers at our side, the family that resides behind us. He provides us with the fruits of His plans he intends for us. He provided me with the gracious woman that is you. As rushed and incredibly daunting as this may be for the two of us,” Benedict’s hand slid into yours, beginning to play with the gemstone soldered to the metal looping around your ring finger, “I pray that it is enduring. That it is kind. That it is joyous, prosperous and pleasant. That the days that result from our union be filled with contentment and merriment, from now and until our souls come to join Him.”
They were beautiful. So meticulously crafted, and well intended as the two of you began the vow of spending the remainder of your lives with one another.
Frequently they chase through your mind these days, walking around the home that Violet had insisted you take upon yourselves. The walls of books, the windows of light that brought you breathtaking familiarity of the countryside you’d grown to love - the dedicated quarters that Benedict had aided you in decorating to your every whim.
The brunette had done every service to aid in your comfort with the marriage enacted. Beautiful gowns from the latest fashions, halls and gardens to lose your time into, countless hobby pools to pick from in waning afternoons, there was no shortage of effort from your husband.
Your conversations were always well mannered, filled with little details of your past lives, stories of friends and siblings, rumors and fairytales from youth. Routines were built between the two of you, including that every three nights, Benedict would sit with you and read the words of the material you’d chosen to you.
Tonight was one of those nights. Benedict lounges out on the chaise, jacket long gone, supple adorned vest and matching kerchief around his neck loosened from the days works. His words are joined with the chirp of evening sounds from a cracked window to aid in the circulation of the house. Your hands stay busy with a needlepoint project. The characters he speaks of are discussing the name of the child that’s been born. You implore your thoughts forward.
“Ben?” His head shifts to look from the parchment and toward you at the use of his name. It was a name that his mother never used, nor his siblings rarely. Perhaps it was just you that had coined this shortened version of the Christian name he’d been given. “Do you suppose we should discuss children?” Blue eyes return to the page in front of him. Given the timeline since your wedding, it was not an unjustified question. You were aware that should the next time you return to London, his mother would be rushing up to you like a hunting dog, ready to drag the kill in from the woods to show off to the ton.
“Do you wish to discuss it?” His eyes barely glaze over you before he slides a ribbon into the split of the book, covers coming together, the book leaving a hefty sigh on the table next to him upon contact.
“I worry that it will be questioned the next time we are seen. We have not entirely been honest with one another over the subject.” There were plenty of things that hadn’t been honest in terms of your marriage the last few months. How Benedict and yourself had their own sleeping arrangements. That you saw each other maybe once or twice a day at mealtimes, save for the nights where it was explicitly discussed you’d be joining the other in leisure times.
Benedict has grown quiet, which is a very odd state for the husband you have come to know the last weeks. This time, you set your own busywork aside, keeping your eyes toward him as he rests in contemplation.
“I wish to have children of my own. Though, I know the process is… taxing on a woman,” the pillow under his head shifts to look your direction, eyes finally coming to meet with one another for a rare occurrence. They do not avert in quick fashion either. The admittance of a family was something you dwelled on with semi-frequent behaviors. After all, one can only do so much knitting of babe-wear before picturing the scene for themselves. You dwell in the wonder of it all as you keep each other held without touching either one of you.
Would they look like their father? Behave like him? With the amused twinkle in their eye when a jest is made, a twist of words, stories with outlandish accents and impossible daydreams… would it be so horrible? To wake in the night with a small babe as they cry out for their mother, held in the warmth of her breast, comforted by her scent. You ached for such a life, one you were cheated of the moment the emerald slid to your hand. A very heavy hand that seems to burden you daily.
“My wife.” Benedict’s voice comes to the room, echoing off of bound paper and golden embellishment on the walls. You tilt your head with a soft grin.
“I am sure we will come to an agreement some day, husband.” There is no need to linger on the unfortunate uncertainties between the two of you. The dark would linger where it rests, those that lived in its shadows subject to whatever hid among it.
Even the ugliest and most ferocious truths.

You awaken from your slumber. Today is another day in the City of Tomes, the sprawling city with a library on every corner, overflowing with books of ancient wisdom.
>Check surroundings
You peer out the window of your apartment. The Towering Gate is still closed, and no one may leave the City. You can barely glimpse the beautiful forest beyond the soaring walls.
>Check for events
What's this? There's a letter on your desk. It's a reminder that you must pay the monthly rent of 20 coins on your room, or face eviction.
What's this? There's an envelope that was stuffed under your door during the night.
>Open envelope
There's a printed flyer in the envelope. In large black text it reads:
WITCHES WANTED. Do you love tracking ancient tomes? Do you love civil service? HELP Mag. Greenthorn of 3306 Compendium Way find RARE BOOKS. Payment upon items received.
This might be the solution to your money problems. But before you go, you should take an inventory of your supplies. With nobody able to leave the City, unrest on the streets means you shouldn't go out unprepared.
>Check inventory >>inventory unavailable
Hmm... that's not right...

Determined to use her skills to fight inequality, South African computer scientist Raesetje Sefala set to work to build algorithms flagging poverty hotspots - developing datasets she hopes will help target aid, new housing, or clinics.
From crop analysis to medical diagnostics, artificial intelligence (AI) is already used in essential tasks worldwide, but Sefala and a growing number of fellow African developers are pioneering it to tackle their continent's particular challenges.
Local knowledge is vital for designing AI-driven solutions that work, Sefala said.
"If you don't have people with diverse experiences doing the research, it's easy to interpret the data in ways that will marginalise others," the 26-year old said from her home in Johannesburg.
Africa is the world's youngest and fastest-growing continent, and tech experts say young, home-grown AI developers have a vital role to play in designing applications to address local problems.
"For Africa to get out of poverty, it will take innovation and this can be revolutionary, because it's Africans doing things for Africa on their own," said Cina Lawson, Togo's minister of digital economy and transformation.
"We need to use cutting-edge solutions to our problems, because you don't solve problems in 2022 using methods of 20 years ago," Lawson told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a video interview from the West African country.
Digital rights groups warn about AI's use in surveillance and the risk of discrimination, but Sefala said it can also be used to "serve the people behind the data points". ...
'Delivering Health'
As COVID-19 spread around the world in early 2020, government officials in Togo realized urgent action was needed to support informal workers who account for about 80% of the country's workforce, Lawson said.
"If you decide that everybody stays home, it means that this particular person isn't going to eat that day, it's as simple as that," she said.
In 10 days, the government built a mobile payment platform - called Novissi - to distribute cash to the vulnerable.
The government paired up with Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) think tank and the University of California, Berkeley, to build a poverty map of Togo using satellite imagery.
Using algorithms with the support of GiveDirectly, a nonprofit that uses AI to distribute cash transfers, the recipients earning less than $1.25 per day and living in the poorest districts were identified for a direct cash transfer.
"We texted them saying if you need financial help, please register," Lawson said, adding that beneficiaries' consent and data privacy had been prioritized.
The entire program reached 920,000 beneficiaries in need.
"Machine learning has the advantage of reaching so many people in a very short time and delivering help when people need it most," said Caroline Teti, a Kenya-based GiveDirectly director.
'Zero Representation'
Aiming to boost discussion about AI in Africa, computer scientists Benjamin Rosman and Ulrich Paquet co-founded the Deep Learning Indaba - a week-long gathering that started in South Africa - together with other colleagues in 2017.
"You used to get to the top AI conferences and there was zero representation from Africa, both in terms of papers and people, so we're all about finding cost effective ways to build a community," Paquet said in a video call.
In 2019, 27 smaller Indabas - called IndabaX - were rolled out across the continent, with some events hosting as many as 300 participants.
One of these offshoots was IndabaX Uganda, where founder Bruno Ssekiwere said participants shared information on using AI for social issues such as improving agriculture and treating malaria.
Another outcome from the South African Indaba was Masakhane - an organization that uses open-source, machine learning to translate African languages not typically found in online programs such as Google Translate.
On their site, the founders speak about the South African philosophy of "Ubuntu" - a term generally meaning "humanity" - as part of their organization's values.
"This philosophy calls for collaboration and participation and community," reads their site, a philosophy that Ssekiwere, Paquet, and Rosman said has now become the driving value for AI research in Africa.
Inclusion
Now that Sefala has built a dataset of South Africa's suburbs and townships, she plans to collaborate with domain experts and communities to refine it, deepen inequality research and improve the algorithms.
"Making datasets easily available opens the door for new mechanisms and techniques for policy-making around desegregation, housing, and access to economic opportunity," she said.
African AI leaders say building more complete datasets will also help tackle biases baked into algorithms.
"Imagine rolling out Novissi in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast ... then the algorithm will be trained with understanding poverty in West Africa," Lawson said.
"If there are ever ways to fight bias in tech, it's by increasing diverse datasets ... we need to contribute more," she said.
But contributing more will require increased funding for African projects and wider access to computer science education and technology in general, Sefala said.
Despite such obstacles, Lawson said "technology will be Africa's savior".
"Let's use what is cutting edge and apply it straight away or as a continent we will never get out of poverty," she said. "It's really as simple as that."

Note
Mr.Rodger.
What your opinion on the twisted version of Glisten? Considering it's the only twisted with half of own mind and that really similar with your best friend, also i will be interested to just hear what research you made on him and your opinion.
-
” Wait a minute.. ‘Twisted’? I don't want to lie, but I've really never heard of such a term. I mean, I've heard it, but it's a completely different context than the one you're describing to me.. And yet, how does this even relate to Glisten? I can only say that the word sounds extremely unpleasant, especially when prescribing it to a living being. For this reason, I ask you not to attribute it to the mirror, please.
But in order not to completely upset you with my ignorance, I could tell you a little about other investigations that I am conducting at this point in time. Right now I'm interested in three problems: The first and most important is the problem with the Managers (or, more simply, our creators), who, after their stunning failure (which I'm still trying to figure out), left us in a huge building without access to any exit to the outside. Moreover, there is no way out, at least on the floor of the Gardenview Center. Due to the limited supply of food, this situation is getting even worse. That's why I'm always rummaging through various papers scattered throughout the complex: to find a solution to the mystery of our "uselessness." I didn't learn much, because I usually came across bills for communal payments and other various unnecessary things. However, I did find some interesting specimens, but I prefer to keep silent about them. I'm sure the main characters know about this situation better than I do, but it's like they've had their mouths sewn shut. They avoid the subject, no matter how hard I try to get them to talk.
The second secret is the Ichor mining or the ichor operation itself, created by Dandy. I don't know why he needs so much liquid, but it looks extremely strange. Previously, as I learned from one classified entry, Ichor was the ‘ink for creating live cartoons,’ which MAY have been the reason toons appeared in this world. I'm not exactly sure, but it seems that we all consist of Ichor to some extent (our blood is really black. But I can't explain our birth. As I said, most of the toons memories are fake, so people could just erase some of the ‘scary’ parts of the story from our heads so that there would be fewer problems). However, what we are mining now looks more like "something spoiled", as if it has long since exhausted its usefulness due to poor conditions of detention. Even the smell of the current Ichor causes some "hallucinogenic effects" and dizziness, which prevents us from being on some floors. The flower assures us that ichor will help us in the future (however, it avoids answering how), which I am beginning to doubt, especially after personal attempts to study the liquid.
And one last thing.. The abrupt loss of Astro. We didn't want to offload this topic, hoping to somehow determine the location of this toon, but all to no avail. Since everyone knows that the star boy only leaves his room at night because of his drowsiness, no one has noticed the loss yet, which plays into my hands - we don't need unnecessary panic. The only one who knows about this is Brigtney, as Astro is the second leader of the Literary Club, managing the library at night.. I would talk about this in more detail, but the topic is not suitable right now. That's why I'm overwhelmed with work. ”

My body has never been mine. It’s been owned, sold, bought, and branded by others time and time again. My body has never been mine to command and control as the authority in my life has. It’s disgusting to think that in the years since my birth, my body, my soul, and my will has been placed into the hands of others.
As a babe it was my parents although they did try to be gentle and kind. Their faults were found in the ones they left to care for me. The awful creatures hated me for a name I did not choose and wished their hearts’ cruelest desires onto me. As one would assume those desires became my reality as I grew older and started to fight back against them. Their words hurt but they bounced off where they once slashed. Their look stung where they once left burn gashes. Their foul intentions felt like flicks on my nose where they once felt like I’d been beaten to a pulp.
My body still wasn’t my own even though when I prayed for it to be returned to me. Boys who felt entitled to looks and touches tried to lay their claim to me. Men who felt like they deserved praise for caring for me tried to demand me in payment for their actions. Too jaded against it all, I turned to a creature that would prove to be far worse than any boy or man I could’ve been gifted to.
The creature I thought I would safety in begged for my eternal devotion and demanded that I give over whatever I could. He made me into a prisoner and my body into a witch that worshipped him.
Every molecule that made up my body, mind, and heart screamed when I began to fight against its urges. The enormity of my own craving made me sick when I wailed at the scorching of my secret ministrations.
At night, I poisoned my mind when it thought of him. I bruised my limbs when they carried me towards him. I broke what I had to when I tried to search for him. I destroyed myself over and over again until the thought of him made my stomach turn and my skin crawl.
The sick version of me tried to bend me and sent fever throughout me. In my delirium, her half truths felt like the sweetest angelic hymns. Whispering into my ear, she tried to coax me into slipping back into my old solutions.
I renounced her honeyed voice and vomited out her milky words. I renounced her hungered tongue and spat out her name along with his. I fused the flames that came when I thought of him with the spite I conjured and burned the bitch alive from the inside out.
Morphed into a starved and twisted soul, I laughed when he began to resent me. It took him months to realize that something had changed within me. I was no longer painted with soft edges and stunning features but carved into a curveless piece of skin and bone that mocked him. At dinners and events thrown in his favor, I sipped at my rotten wine while the women among me gossiped the state of my marriage. They did not utter a single word for how I seemed to be fairing but how the once holy union between him and I seemed to be slipping.
I sipped at the foul liquid until it stained my lips a violent shade of calculated vengeance. I pretended to swallow entire bottles and postured drunkenness so they would think I couldn’t hear the things they confessed to.
My husband’s heavy stare always found me as I slumped further and further into my chair, allowing him to believe that my pain to consumed me. The hungry leery he masked with an adoring gaze had faded into disappointment and disgust, so much so that eventually he stopped looking altogether. No longer did he pull me into his lap, his Herculean arms caging me in falsified comfort and demand to know what was bothering his beautiful wife.
Instead he found younger and more attractive women to watch and eventually fill his time with. Instead a young woman, borderline girl, with flowing locks of auburn hair and gentle curves became his new hobby.
Thin as a rib, my knife slept under my pillow. The feverish bitch within me cried and cried as she watched me plot his demise. It pained the other within me that withered and gasped for air to think I could even contemplate such a scenario.
Could I truly commit murder?
Could I truly force my husband to shuffle off this mortal coil?
The dueling fates were soon quilled when I turned in sleep to find claustrophobia looming over me. His warm body threatened to suffocate me while the haunting sound of his inner thoughts filled the breadth between us. Once I had been pulled into slumbers embrace by his heart beat’s gentle drum and quiet song of his breath but now it closed in on me and pressed.
I could not muster the strength to find my rib like knife nor move it from its hiding place. I promised myself only a few more days of this torture. Only a few more nights of slipping back into his bed before I set myself free.
I hadn’t intended on waiting for another few weeks but an uninvited guest coiled my plan into nothingness.
Azriel the Shadowsinger.
He arrived just as his name implied; as silently as the night and slithered his way in without resistance. He was a man born with charmed words that dripped from his silver tipped tongue and slid between pearly white teeth. A man known for his third eye, the Truth-Teller, that when he showed up on our doorstep, my husband begged him to stay for fear of his wrath. Like a shadow, he was present in every crevice of the house and was not seen. My husband’s ego got his way, tripping him up as he stumbled to accommodate Azriel, the embodiment of shadows with violent hazel eyes.
The woman my husband found to be my replacement took her role before I was revealed. Instead I was whisked away into a room hidden deep within the compound. She played the dutiful host and doted on her guests. She donned the gowns once crafted for me and wore the jewelry I previously did. She laughed at the jokes the men made and smiled sweetly at the husband she desired but would never love. She became the wife and I hated to see another take my place for I knew what awaited her.
I wanted to spare her. I tried to spare her but my efforts were in vain. She cried out when I told her to leave. She screamed when she saw my knife meant my husband. She fell into it when I tried to pull away from her ivory grasp.
As I said, I hadn’t intended on becoming into the personification of destruction but it was inevitable when I was given no other choice.
Blood drips from me and hits the floor beneath me with a deafening loudness as my husband stares at me.
A single question hangs in the air; “What have you done?”
“What have I done?” I calmly ask, arching a brow at the man who stands and dares to judge me. “The better question is what did you make me do.”
It’s a disgusting sight to behold; him pretending that I’m nothing more than a body of mangled bones and broken convictions molded by him. Dark as night and deafening as the ever present silence that fills when you’re dying, his gaze tries to weigh me down and fails.
Azriel smiles when he senses my anger and he becomes a conduit of my emotions as the twin sinister glint to mine flickers in his dark eyes. He reclines against the rotting wood walls like a feline would; regal and untouchable but lethal all the same.
My husband throws a glance to the blood that is pooling around me with disappointment before speaking, “Your actions are your own. Take responsibility for the carnage that you have created for once in your pathetic life. This is all your fault, y/n.”
My eyes narrow at his choice of words.
Take responsibility? My fault?
Fitting that he would choose to say that I need to take the blame for the actions I committed because of him. He had been the one to deem me an object to be bought and sold. He had been the one to make me in his image and create a wife he felt was worthy of him. He had been the one to turn my body into a heretic and I had no other choice but to burn her at the stake.
“Husband,” I start as I take a step forward while he takes one back, “What I have done is only because you forced my hand. Every drop of blood, scream ripped from raw throats, tears shed have been because of you.”
Azriel’s terrifying chuckle rings through the room, causing the remaining members of my husband’s house to drop their heads and hide their fear. The blood of their new lady of the house fills the room with a coppery stench and some have taken to covering their faces with their collars. As Azriel around the room, his chest swells with pride at the terror that he’s caused in them but it stills when he lands on me.
A creature who’s grown angular and unholy in the confines of her husband’s cage.
He smiles as he lets his dagger like eyes to slash across my frame.
“Enough of whatever petty martial bullshit this is about,” he dismisses with boredom thick in his voice. “You took something from me and I want it back.”
My husband attempts to fix the situation but the guest cuts him off.
“I said enough,” he seethes, gritting out the words between clenched teeth. The action tightens and sharpens his already pronounced jaw, giving him the appearance akin to a statue.
Within seconds my coward of a husband is lying on the ground, crying and begging for his lord as the Lord of Bloodshed, Cassian, stands over him with his siphons glow a brilliant red.
“Please I don’t have it. I swear I don’t have it!” he begs while the bigger man growls before landing a swift kick to his stomach. “Take whatever you want, please. Anything and it’s yours.”
Cassian looks to Azriel and awaits his judgment. Azriel has not looked away from me this entire night. He’s still locked in on me as he nods. Cassian bends down and grips my husband by the neck, hauling him up so high his feet dangle helplessly below him.
“That’s a dangerous deal you’ve just made.”
My husband begs and begs for his own life but not for mine or even the wife he replaced me with as she lays on the floor in a pool of blood.
“If only I believed you,” Azriel sighs, “but I don’t and I’m not in the mood to hear any more of your lies.”
“Y/n..” my husband turns his pleading to me but I interrupt him with a roar of anger.
“Enough,” I hiss at him, rage boiling in my veins, “You used and manipulated me for years. I was nothing but a toy to brought out when you grew bored. You’ve shoved me off to the side and pushed me to my breaking point but now that the consequences are coming for you, you turn to me and expect me to help.”
Azriel has taken to prowling towards me now that my calm facade has dropped. He stalks me like an apex predator would their prey.
“Did you hear that, princess?” He poses the question to me and only me. “He’s offering you up like a prized goat when he could just give me what he took. That’s not very nice now is it? Seems a bit selfish doesn’t it?”
I attempt to sneak a glance at my husband but he catches my chin in a tight grip, “Don’t look at them, look at me.”
And I do. I’m met with a torrid stare that calls to that divinely angular and starving creature within me.
“You can have her! Take her, please! Please just don’t kill me,” my husband cries out as if I’ll be his saving grace. The sounds are muffled as the utter chaos that lives within Azriel’s heart soothes me into the fall.
I fall into the forked tongued embrace of this devilish man.
I fall into the need of a python that wraps itself around us both.
I fall into the heaving breaths that lunge my chest up and down as I stare at his lips.
I fall into the visions of heat, sweat, gluttony, and lust that awaits us.
Azriel visibly cringes before me at my husband’s words but waits for me.
“Well princess?”
“I want my freedom,” I demand and he flashes me a disastrously beautiful smile.
“Of course,” he promises me. “Of course, princess.”

Hello there! My name is Derxwna Kapsyla, and you might know me as the mastermind behind projects such as "Yitria Resurrection", "Touhouon Asteria", "Touhou Pupet Play ~ The Adventures of Ayaka", "Chronicles of the Omniverse"- Wait, you don't know that last one? Never mind it then! Today I'm here to talk about something I am extremely passionate about- map design!
It is easily my favorite aspect of game development, and I feel like I'm pretty proficient at it. So, I would like to open up map making commissions to help people out on their own projects! I've got well over 10 years of experience, getting my start back in the ancient days of Binary ROM Hacking with Advance Map being the hottest tool on the block. I like to make sure the maps I make are of the highest standards I can possibly muster, so I have a fairly sharp eye for detail.
I also love communicating ideas with people and helping them reach a desired solution (If I'm able to)! If you're interested in taking a shot on me, I welcome you to message me on here, or DM me on Discord! I look forward to getting a chance to work with you! I promise, I don't bite- I'd much rather use an Ion Cannon. Also I just lost my job recently so I could really use some supplementary income while I try and find a new job...
Things to know about Derxwna:
I've been working with game development as a hobbyist for over 10 years, with an exceptional passion for map design.
I like to make sure that anything I make is the best quality I can possibly produce.
I do have a degree (of sorts) in Game Design, Programming, and Animation.
Spent a good majority of my time playing Wind Waker just trying to compare terrain to Ocarina of Time.
You will not find a person more offended by the tile errors in vanilla Pokemon games, I guarantee it.
What I am offering:
Map design for 2D environment based games.
Map critique and feedback. (This is free!)
Eventing on a small scale.
Redesigning your own maps.
What I am not offering:
A whole game made from scratch (Unless you're paying massive $Revenue).
Complex scripting maneuvers.
Unique tilesets. If you have a unique tileset you want me to use, send it- but I will check if you are allowed to use it.
Trainer battles.
Advice on how to spend your FSA. I answer those questions enough at my previous workplace.
Examples of my work:
-- Touhoumon Asteria -- https://imgur.com/a/hsAjnuk
-- Yitria Resurrection -- https://imgur.com/a/fveRkMc
-- Adventures of Ayaka -- https://imgur.com/a/tYAV8u7
-- Other Map Creations -- https://imgur.com/a/ZzqvrdV
Prices
-- Map Size --
Small map (30x30 or smaller): $10
Medium map (60x60 or smaller): $35
Large Map (100x100 or smaller): $60
Extra Large Map (100x100 or greater): $90
I am willing to take on a multi-map endeavor. Prices will be discounted for bulk purchases. I am also willing to very slightly haggle on the tiers above Small Map, but prices will not go below $10 above the previously listed tier.
-- Eventing --
Depending on event complexity and quantity, additional fees may be incurred.
-- Additional Pricing --
Gen 4 or 5 theme: +$40. I am not comfortable mapping in this style. I can attempt it, but only if you provide a tileset of the exact tiles you want.
When it comes to payments, I am flexible with how I receive them. I understand that people are not comfortable giving an entire lump sum for commissions. If you'd like, we can work out a payment plan of sorts, or you can pay a portion up front and pay the rest upon completion. If I do not or am unable to finish the map, I will refund the amount paid up front. As a note, if you are looking for a rush order, an additional fees may be incurred.
Contact Information
The best ways to reach me if you are looking for a commission, or if you have any additional questions are as follows:
The Eevee Expo Forums
Discord: DerxwnaKapsyla
Tumblr
This is where I would put my Twitter account- if it was unsuspended.
Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/derxwnakapsyla.bsky.social
The best times to reach me are between 12 PM and 12 AM PST (GMT-7).

Even if you don't live in a particularly climate sensitive area in the US, your home insurance rates may increase because of climate disasters caused in more affected areas.
[N]owhere is safe from climate-worsened extreme weather risks: Hurricanes arriving from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic seaboard. Hail in the Midwest. Floods in the East. Sea level rise along the coasts. Wildfires in the West, most recently exemplified by the devastating and costly fires around Los Angeles. And worsening extreme weather translates into more expensive property damages, growing insurance claims, and rising insurance rates. Somebody has to pay for the costs to repair, rebuild, and replace damaged homes and vehicles, but with insurance companies raising rates and dropping customers, the situation is quickly threatening to trigger an insurance crisis. Despite rapidly rising policy rates, the homeowner’s insurance market lost money in 18 states in 2023. As a recent Senate Budget Committee staff report concluded, climate-worsened extreme weather is “destabilizing insurance markets.” And the problem extends beyond insurance policy costs. “If home values fall, governments take in less tax revenue. That means less money for schools and police,” said New York Times climate change reporter Christopher Flavelle on The Daily podcast. “Maybe instead of climate change wrecking communities in the form of a big storm or a wildfire or a flood, maybe even before those things happen, climate change can wreck communities by something as seemingly mundane and even boring as insurance.”
People are free to live in sensitive areas which are more prone to danger. But they need to understand what they're getting into and be willing to pay the costs.
Ultimately, somebody has to pay for the rising costs of property damages from climate-worsened extreme weather. As insurance companies pass those costs along to their customers, or drop some policy coverage altogether, property owners are left with suboptimal options to reduce financial burdens. Individuals can reduce their insurance plan coverage, leaving them more financially vulnerable if a disaster strikes. They can shift to parametric insurance, where payments are based on the amount by which a certain parameter like wind speed or rainfall exceeds a given threshold, rather than on the amount of damage done. Payments are made relatively fast, but these parametric plans run a substantial risk of providing insufficient money to cover actual damages.
"Managed retreats" are one way to deal with future issues.
One partial solution to the problem involves the opposite behavior – encouraging managed retreats from high-risk areas. This is a challenging and complex topic because people tend to have strong attachments to their homes. But when a house is badly damaged by extreme weather and faces a high risk of a repeat event in the future, tying insurance payouts to a move to a safer area is one possible solution. It’s one that the Canadian province of Quebec employed after destructive flood events along the Ottawa River in 2017 and 2019. Other regulatory and market-based tools can help discourage new property developments in high-risk areas.
However there are still people moving into climate sensitive areas.
In the long run, we simply need to get carbon emissions down.
Ultimately the solution must involve prevention: reaching net zero global climate pollution to stop global warming so that these extreme weather events cease to worsen. Until then, extensive efforts will be required to avert a potential insurance crisis.
For now, people should factor climate costs into there decisions regarding where to settle down.

Hi a request from your 1k followers event (congratulations on hitting that milestone!)
Can I ask for Yandere Childe
The OC name is lukyan, 21 male
Personality wise: he's basically like Diluc, they seem cold and rude though different from Diluc, even when you get to know him he's still cold and distance (he barely interact w anyone and lack social skill badly-)
Backstory: he's basically an orphan in Snezhnaya but was never found out by the fatui, he kinda live in his own w another orphan who also never got found out by the fatui, when they were 15 the friend die and lukyan live alone from then on, he feel so guilty cuz he couldn’t protect his friends, rn he’s doing work like hunting or tree chopping to make sm money and live by the day (I tried to keep it short so now it sound weird😭)
In my canon he never really meet Childe, so you don’t need to write anything long just a general headcanon how would they meet in your mind and how would Yandere Childe work w someone like this
Also if I break any rules do tell me:,)
Ayyyy, thanks for sending the request, hope you'll enjoy😆
Trigger Warning: Yandere, Obsessive behaviour, Possessive behaviour
Childe had always seen him, sometimes out on the streets doing odd jobs, and sometimes through the corner of his eyes, but one thing always stayed the same, no matter how big the crowd, he could always notice Lukyan.
Observing him became kinda an obsession for Childe, seeing how he would run around, working his ass off for minimim payment... okay that last one makes him quite sad, he shouldn't have to work, Childe thinks that Lukyan deserves to be spoiled, to live a life of luxery.
Childe decides to become that person, the person who spoils and give gifts to Lukyan, presents will always appear in front of him without him seeing who leaves him with them. Childe isn't even liekly to get jealous with Lukyan since Lukyan acts cold and distant with others, in fact Childe prefers him to be this way
But Childe's patience can only go for so long, he grows annoyed that Lukyan isn't his, so what does he do? He uses his own authority as a harbinger to make sure no one is willing to give him any more jobs, no more jobs means no more money, and when Lukyan has no money, well some fatui's might loan him some money.
Money that Lukyan can't pay back, and who else but Childe can offer a solution when the fatui is hunting him down for being late on repayment. Become his and all the debt will dissapear, Lukyan doesn't have a choice.
"Well what do we have here, if it isn't Lukyan, it says you are 3 months late on paying us back... no need to fear, why don't you sit down, I have an offer I'm sure you'll be thrilled to hear about"

National Winnie the Pooh Day
Grab a pot of “hunny”, enjoy a game of Poohsticks and revisit these beloved childhood stories about a bear and all his friends
One of the cuddliest holidays around has to be National Winnie the Pooh Day, celebrated on the birthday of author A. A. Milne. It’s one special anniversary fans just can’t bear to miss! Every year, the occasion is marked with events such as teddy bears’ picnics, featuring plenty of honey on the menu.
History Of Winnie The Pooh Day
Winnie the Pooh first appeared on the printed page in 1926, together with friends Piglet, Tigger, and Eeyore. All of them were based on toys owned by the author’s son, who also featured in the famous stories as Christopher Robin. The character later starred in a series of much-loved Disney films.
The name Winnie, for instance, came from Milne’s teddy bear Winnie. The “Pooh” part was from the nickname of a swan he’d met on holiday. The rest of the names, besides those mentioned above, were purely creations of his mind and allegedly did not refer to any objects in the real world.
The story and adventures of Winnie the Pooh are set in the ancient Ashdown Forest of East Sussex. The area features beautiful open heathland, wooded areas, and high ridges. Locals consider it an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Many stories in Winnie the Pooh have clear associations with locations in the forest. The illustrations that accompanied the original books often depicted scenes from this part of the world. Pooh, Tigger, and the crew are regularly seen marching through beautiful gorse, heather, bracken, and silver birch, all popular in the Ashdown area.
The landscapes were an essential part of what helped to make Winnie the Pooh such a compelling pop phenomenon. Like J.R.R Tolkien, Milne had found something unique and persuasive in the English countryside. There was deep magic about it that lent itself to pure escapism. The idea of friendly animal characters adventuring in such an area whisked audiences off to another world that had nothing to do with the pressures of the modern economy.
The first-ever Pooh stories appeared in a Christmas special edition of the Evening Standard newspaper in December 1924. The first book Winnie-the-Pooh emerged around a year later. It told the very first stories of Pooh and his compatriots as they humorously toured through idyllic country scenes, collecting honey and arguing pleasantly.
The Winnie the Pooh brand remained in the Milne family until 1930 until television and merchandising expert, Stephen Slesinger, bought out the rights. Milne received a $1,000 payment upfront plus 66 percent of the income generated by Slesinger’s efforts. Over the next thirty years, Winnie-the-Pooh transformed into a $50 million-a-year franchise – a testament to its tremendous popularity.
Pooh ceased being solely a storybook character. He soon grew into a film star, musician, and toy brand. No longer was the concept confined to the pages of a book. Winnie-the-Pooh had a very real presence in the world.
Throughout it all, though, Slesinger and the Milne family remained faithful to the original character of Winnie-the-Pooh. At first blush, everyone’s favorite yellow bear seems a little slow and dim-witted. But as the stories develop, you soon see endearing aspects of his character and profound emotional intelligence.
Pooh is keenly aware of his intellectual limitations, but this is an aspect that makes him so lovable. There’s no pretense about the bear. He just wants to live his life and find practical, hands-on solutions to problems. Examples of his down-to-Earth nature abound from his rescuing of Eeyore from a river to Poohsticks’ invention.
Pooh is also extremely fond of food and not afraid to indulge a little in life’s pleasures. He loves what he calls “hunny” and will go to great lengths to acquire it.
Most of the time, Pooh hangs out with his friends. He is a social creature, always interested in the lives of others. He makes a habit of spending time with the other animals of the forest and ensures that their needs are met. He is a kind of steward and a leader, without people realizing it.
When Disney bought the rights to the franchise in 1966, they were keen to keep Pooh’s lovable persona intact. Bosses at the studio knew that it was a winning formula and something people instinctively loved. Pooh hit the big time, thanks to animated productions from the cartoon maker.
The first production in 1966 was a theatrical “featurette” called Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree. Later, Disney followed up these productions with Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day and Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too in 1974.
Seeing the demand for a feature-length film, the studio combined all three into The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
Things kicked off for the franchise after 1980. Producers gave the go-ahead for a series of new movies and television series that exposed entire generations of children to the concept. The first of these was Welcome to Pooh Corner, which ran from 1983 to 1986. After that came The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and My Friends Tigger & Pooh.
Ultimate, Milne intended Winnie the Pooh as a work that would comfort, not challenge. And that remains very much the essence of the franchise to this day.
How to Celebrate Winnie The Pooh Day
Thanks to the sheer number of films, books, and TV adaptations, there are all kinds of ways you can enjoy National Winnie the Pooh Day. In fact, there’s so much content to consume, there’s no way you’ll get it all done in twenty-four hours. Oh well, there’s always next year!
If you’re the sort of person who loves the history of Winnie the Pooh, why not spend the day reading Milne’s original works, starting with the Christmas edition of the 1924 Evening Standard? Then move on to reading the compilation stories to get a sense of how the author originally envisioned the character.
After that, it might be fun to move on to later adaptations of Pooh to see how he evolved over time. Often, you’ll find striking consistency, and sometimes you’ll find small cultural context changes here and there. Overall, though, it is incredible how similar the modern incarnation is to his historical counterpart.
Indulging in a Winnie the Pooh movie marathon can also be a lot of fun. You could watch all the films from the 1970s until the present, back to back.
Winnie the Pooh was also a massive lover of food, especially honey. Nothing is stopping you from recreating his favorite recipes from the books and movies.
Finally, one extra-special way to mark the day is to visit Pooh Corner in Hartfield, East Sussex, where the books were written. You can pick up a map to follow in the characters’ footsteps, and even play a game of Poohsticks on the original bridge.
Celebrating National Winnie the Pooh Day, therefore, is way easier than you might think. Dressing up as a bear, eating lots of honey, and watching your favorite Pooh movies are all great options.
