And they did that a lot to Sasaengs such as Sehun's famous Sasaeng "Iridescent boy" and Suho's sasaeng "Rion " and Baekhyun's "Polar Light" ExoL ruined them and hacked their accounts and got them suspended on Twitter and insta and even hacked their bank accounts and their phones and threatened them to expose their photos and take their money and they even Beated "Polar Light"and "Rion" and threatened them that if they ever come to any Exo event or concert they would beat them again to bleeding. To the level that Both Rion and Polar light had massive plastic surgery to change their features completely and they hid their faces with masks and glasses and changed their style completely to be able to attend a concert or fansign without being recognized by the ExoL Mafia! But unfortunately they recognized Rion again and beated the shit out of her until she bled and they sent her back to Japan and told her to never come back again.

So who wants to deal with all of that? Why would I risk all this to give you a photo of Kadi that you will not even appreciate and you might spread to the internet and expose them and me and ruin the both of us? He said that he saw shadows and voices of people lurking outside their dorm rooms waiting for the members. The artist had displayed his discomfort in this matter and explained how inconvenient it was for the members and the staff. 

3. TVXQ Yunho Orange Juice Case

So far this is the worst kpop sasaeng case that has occurred in the history of kpop and left a mark on the artist and other idols in parallel. Back in 2006, Yunho was poisoned by a crazy anti-fan. He said that he accepted a glass of orange juice from, whom he thought was a staff. No sooner had he consumed it, he felt like he couldn’t breath and was thankfully rushed to the hospitals. It was found that the kpop sasaeng had mixed the juice with Superglue. 

In the years to come, Yunho was so traumatized that he couldn’t eat or drink anything that’s not packed and sealed from anyone apart from his family. 

4. Girls Generation Taeyeon on Stage Kidnapping

In 2011, while performing “Run Devil Run” at the Lotte World, a kpop sasaeng had snuck up the stage and literally grabbed Taeyeon of Girls Generation and tried to pull her away.

If it wasn’t for her teammate Sunny and the MC comedian Oh Jungtae who acted immediately to pry her off that creep, the poor idol could have been harmed. 

However, no steps were taken against the man’s behaviour and he was simply guided outside by saying that he got “over-excited”. One could only imagine the level of fright and panic this incident must have put the idol and her group mates in after that.

😡Seriously something’s needs to be done about these sasaengs, haters, and antis. Idols lives are hard and stressful enough as is they don’t need to be made harder by toxic idiots dehumanizing them. “Are media representations of fans as ‘weird’ and ‘overly emotional’ fair? What is your own experience of fandom?”

A fan is somebody who is obsessed with a particular star, celebrity, film, TV programme, band, and they participate in communal activities (Hills 2002). Most of us are fans of something, as long as we are interested in something. There are many types of fans represented in media and the public, such as normal fans, weird fans, and overly emotional fans. Although there are also some normal fans in the media, I still agree that media representations of fans as ‘weird’ and ‘overly emotional’ are fair. In this blog, we are going to see how the fans are ‘weird’ and ‘overly emotional’ on media, and my own experience of fandom.

One Direction’s crazy fans

According to the research (Chin 2023), the study of fans isn’t new, and it is not just about K-pop or K-dramas. One hardly needs reminding that fan audiences have historically been viewed as ‘obsessive, freakish, hysterical, infantile and regressive social subjects’ (Proctor n.d.). The Channel Four documentary ‘Crazy About One Direction’ (CAOD), begins with the narrator, Julia David, explaining that Directioners are ‘simply crazy’ about the band and that the fan culture is nothing less than a ‘new breed of fan’ who use social media to ‘worship their idols’, and ‘go to extreme lengths to get noticed by the boys’ (Proctor n.d.). They are loyal to their idols and become crazy and weird. According to Proctor (n.d.), those crazy Directioners perform their fandom by tweeting the band and often begging them to ‘follow them’ on social media. From One Direction’s crazy fans research, we can see how ‘weird’ they are.

Sasaeng Fans in Korea

Sasaeng are fans of music groups, who have taken their obsession to extremes because nothing says ‘fan’ better than a bloody letter (Iwicka 2018). Sasaeng fans are people who infringe on the private lives of artists, and they are also ‘weird’ and ‘overly emotional’ in media. In Korea, fans usually give artists gifts like soft toys, or flowers during performances. According to my own experience, I have ever heard some of the weird fans put a micro camera in the gifts, to peep at that artist. Besides, they also get celebrity’s phone numbers from some sources or follow celebrities to their hotel room and keep on disturbing them.

On 21 May 2019, EXO member Kai was broadcasting live on Instagram when he was gym. When he wants to leave, there were two sasaeng fan who are stalking him, and waiting for Kai near the gym of his car (Philippines Star 2019). Not only Kai from EXO, but also a lot of South Korean celebrities met sasaeng fans. During 2021, Blackpink member Kim Jennie was the target of a US$30,000 billboard advertisement set up by Filipino socia media influencer, Christian Albert Gaza, who is a self-proclaimed No 1 Jennie fan (Chung 2021). Sasaeng fans are mostly weird and overly emotional, they not only want to stalk their private lives, but also date the celebrities.

✨My Experience of fandom✨

First and foremost, I used to be a fan of EXO member Luhan while I was in primary school. On October 8, 2017, Luhan made an official announcement on Weibo of his relationship with Guan Xiaotong, which was one of my most memorable experiences. On that day, Luhan's Weibo followers dropped by about half and the social media service was down for a few hours. This research demonstrates that Luhan's fans are typically extremely emotional, since they always consider themselves to be Luhan's girlfriend. Some fans will call themselves as 'girlfriend fans' or'mother fans' on social media platforms. According to my fandom experience, 'girlfriend fans' are more weird and overly emotional. If the celebrities they like suddenly expose their relationship, most of them would either hate the celebrity's girlfriend/boyfriend on social media or begin to condemn the celebrity's girlfriend/boyfriend.

Conclusion

Based on my research and experience in fandom, I believe that media representations of fans as 'weird' and 'overly emotional' are fair. They are strange and extremely emotional, yet they like celebrities. If the celebrities do something that the toxic fans are uncomfortable with of, they begin to hate and destroy them. However, despite their weird and extremely emotional behaviour, it is all because of they like the celebrities, but in the wrong way.

Y/n had been going about his day at the SM building, as usual, when a group of idols—mostly from NCT and EXO—caught him by surprise in the staff lounge. Kai, Taeyong, and Chanyeol casually approached, holding their water bottles and flashing familiar grins. He has been hanging out with them often these days, ever since he gained his fame as the “Sasaeng blocker”.

"Yo, Y/n!" Kai called out, causing Y/n to glance up from his phone. "We’re putting together a soccer match later. You in?"

Y/n blinked, surprised at the invitation. "Eh, me? For soccer? Are you sure, hyung?"

Chanyeol nodded enthusiastically. "Of course! We’ve seen you running around with the girls. You’re in shape, man, and we need more players. Plus, it’s just a friendly game."

"Right," Y/n said, scratching the back of his neck. "But I haven’t played in forever. I’m probably rusty."

Taeyong waved it off. "Doesn’t matter. It’s all for fun. If anything, it’s more funny if some of us messed up. What do you say?"

"I will trip, just to embarrass all of you" he muttered, feeling the weight of their teasing already. But as they all exchanged knowing glances, he could feel something else brewing—especially from Winter. She wasn’t one to normally get worked up about anything athletic, but today, there was a new energy about her.

By the time Y/n arrived at the SM outdoor soccer field, the teams were already warming up. The guys from EXO and NCT were scattered across the field, stretching and kicking the ball around. Y/n could feel the butterflies in his stomach as he walked up, spotting his name on one of the makeshift team lists.

“Casual match, hyung said. Yet there is a full list for each team.” Y/n chuckled. “And holy sht they came.”

And, of course, aespa had already staked out a spot on the sidelines. Giselle, Ningning, Karina, and Winter were bundled up in jackets, watching with amusement as Y/n geared up. Winter, in particular, had her eyes glued to him, which only made Y/n more nervous.

"Good luck!" Ningning called out, waving as Y/n jogged onto the field.

The first half of the game was fast-paced. Y/n quickly found his rhythm, darting between players and making some solid passes. He even managed to block a goal attempt from Suho, which earned him a loud cheer from the sidelines. He could hear Ningning and Giselle shouting encouragement, but Winter’s voice stood out the most.

"Go, Y/n!" Winter practically yelled, her voice cutting through the chaos of the game. “Kick them already!!”

Y/n nearly stumbled, distracted by her enthusiasm. He shot a quick glance over to the sidelines, catching Winter’s bright smile and the way her eyes lit up every time he got close to the ball. It wasn’t helping his focus, but it did give him an extra boost of energy.

As the game progressed, the boys were getting more competitive. Kai and Taeyong were neck and neck, their teams pushing harder and harder to score. Y/n was right in the middle of it, doing his best to keep up with the pros.

Then, just as Y/n was preparing to intercept a pass from Jaehyun, he heard Winter again.

"Nice pass, Y/n!" someone from EXO called out, and a cheer erupted from the sidelines.

"Go, Y/n!" Winter’s roar rang out louder than the rest, catching him off guard for a second. He glanced over, noticing her beaming with pride as she cupped her hands around her mouth for emphasis. Karina smirked next to her, nudging Winter playfully, while Ningning and Giselle exchanged knowing looks.

Y/n’s cheeks reddened slightly as he quickly refocused on the game. He hadn’t expected Winter to be so... vocal. It was flattering, but also a little nerve-wracking. His mind wandered briefly—Did she do that for everyone, or was it just him?

The game was going well at first—Y/n had a few decent moments, made some good passes, and even managed to defend against a couple of NCT’s players. But halfway through the second half, things started to take a turn. The score was tied, and tensions were rising.

Then it happened—a missed pass, a perfect opportunity to score slipping through Y/n’s fingers as the ball sailed wide of the goalpost. He could feel his frustration bubbling up. He wasn’t usually one to let things get to him, but this time, something snapped.

Y/n flushed, realising his mistake, but there was no taking it back now. He tried to refocus on the game, ignoring the snickering from the sidelines. Every time he glanced over, Winter was laughing, clearly enjoying his slip-up.

As the game continued, Y/n couldn’t help but notice how Winter’s cheers seemed to get louder every time he touched the ball. Even the other guys started to take notice.

"Looks like you’ve got some serious support there," Doyoung teased as they took a brief break for water.

"Yeah, right," Taeyong chuckled, not buying Y/n’s dismissal for a second. "You’re lucky, man. Most of us barely get a nod of acknowledgment from them, but she’s all about your game."

Y/n coughed awkwardly, trying to shrug it off as no big deal. But the truth was, it was kind of a big deal. Winter had been acting a little differently around him recently, and it didn’t take a genius to figure out why the guys were teasing him about it.

As if things couldn’t get more intense, the skies darkened unexpectedly. Large, ominous clouds rolled in, and soon, raindrops began to fall. It started as a light drizzle, but within minutes, it turned into a full-on downpour.

The players on the field exchanged glances, but no one was ready to quit yet. If anything, the rain seemed to energize them. The ball slid across the slick grass, and the once casual game became more competitive.

Y/n, now soaked to the bone, found himself sprinting harder, making riskier plays, and diving for the ball like his life depended on it. The rain blurred his vision, but he kept pushing, determined to make up for his earlier mistake.

The girls were enjoying the intense match even more after the rain. Although, two different conversations were in the same spot.

"Is it just me, or Y/n actually look good in the rain…" Giselle gawked, feeling proud that dragging him to the gym was worth it.

The three of them glanced at Winter, whose voice cut through the rain, louder than ever. As if there wasn't anything else in this world at this moment, Winter kept on cheering with all of her might. She kept on waving around her cheerleading sticks, which gave some teasing ammo to the girls who mimicked her.

However, she was fully enjoying the cheer. "Come on, Y/n! Kick their butt!"

Y/n couldn’t help but smile. Her support was somehow both embarrassing and motivating at the same time.

The rain showed no signs of letting up, but the match was nearing its end. With the score still tied, both teams were fighting tooth and nail for the final point. Y/n’s team was on the offensive, and the ball was passed to him just outside the goal box.

"FINAL SHOT!!"

Xiumin/Minseok:

✾ He is a lot shyer than the other members; where most of EXO probably feels comfortable enough to act on their crushes, he is a bit more reserved. He wants to test the waters first, ascertaining whether the feeling is mutual. Whenever you are around and are talking to other people, he sits back silently, observing your reactions.

✾ Xiumin is smiling so widely around you that the other members worry that his muscles might start cramping up soon. The moment he sees you, his bubbly personality starts to really shine through, and sometimes you can't help but wonder whether this man truly is 33.

✾ That being said, from the moment that anyone offers Xiumin a couple of drinks, his confidence spikes, and he will start flirting with you. His flirting is still extremely sweet and cute; Xiumin can be incredibly charming when he wants to be.

Suho/Junmyeon

✾ He is such a gentleman around you, trying to make you feel at ease with his kind gestures. Whether it is him pulling back a chair or opening a door for you, he will do anything to make you feel like a princess.

✾ Being one of EXO's proud black card owners, he will casually buy you whatever you need. He keeps repeating that he wants to treat his friends when you try to interject. You can't completely refute it; he does spend a lot of money on the members. Yet, you can't help but feel like his gifts are slightly too expensive and excessive for 'just friends'.

✾ So. Many. Soft. Glances. Suho looks at you like you hung the moon and the stars; you catch him staring at you almost every time you look over. Conversations with him can, therefore, be a tad awkward. He doesn't always register what you are saying; he is so absorbed in watching you that he forgets to listen.

✾ The other members relentlessly tease him for it. If you don't catch on based on Suho's actions, you will definitely catch on due to his members' relentless teasing. Whenever he does anything remotely romantic around you, their faces light up like Christmas came early. The members are not subtle about it whatsoever, thoroughly enjoying putting their leader in a slightly uncomfortable position.

Baekhyun:

✾ The members didn't think it was possible, but Baekhyun somehow became louder. It is as if he wants to draw your attention simply by screaming, as he no longer has any volume control when you are around. Everyone can hear your conversation from across the room, and his laughter becomes borderline obnoxious as it overpowers any other sound.

✾ He is such a tease and a suggestive one at that. Considering he has no problem revealing intimate, not suitable to be aired on national TV, details about the members' bodies, he won't have any trouble suggestively flirting with you. Where Xiumin's pick-up lines are cute, Baekhyun's are far from it. Give this man some holy water, Jesus.

✾ He is so intense with his flirting that it sometimes crosses the line of sexy to parody, coming off as a joke. Baekyhyun has a very flirty personality and isn't above flirting with his friends. Even though he isn't subtle about his crush, he can accidentally fall into the "he flirts with everyone" category, making you question whether he genuinely likes you or is just being friendly.

✾ He really enjoys the chase when it comes to relationships. Thus, it will take him quite some time before he asks you out, simply because he likes the push-and-pull game.

Chanyeol

✾ There is nothing subtle about Mr. Park Chanyeol. The moment he sees someone he wants to date, he is going for it full steam ahead. Puppy Chanyeol is momentarily retired as he makes his way over to you; Chanyeol knows that he is handsome and sexy, and he is ready to show it to you. I hope you weren't interested in anyone else because the moment you return any of his interest, he will be flirting with you like there is no tomorrow.

✾ Internally, he is so excited to be talking to you, and sometimes, you will see glimpses of his cute puppy-like persona, especially once he feels like you are just as interested. Still, the words coming out of this man's mouth, Jesus part two. Please go and ask Baekyhun to pass the holy water.

✾ Don't get me wrong, I adore this man to a delusional extent, but he is absolutely hopeless when it comes to communicating with his crush. He won't go anywhere near you if he can't help it; he prefers looking at you from afar. He is someone who favours being approached first over approaching you himself. It isn't that he doesn't want to talk to you; he simply isn't the type of person to initiate contact with his crush and tends to stay back when he can tell that someone else is interested, too. 

✾ Even if he finds himself near you, don't expect him to have a full-blown conversation with you. He already tends to be a man of little words, but when it comes to you, he is a man of not a single word. Being around you is enough to make him happy; he doesn't really need to have a deep conversation. 

✾ Nevertheless, his actions make more than up for it. He is such a gentleman, being the definition of preferential treatment. You don't have a chair to sit on? He will quietly offer you his. Your sweater got caught on something? He will silently help you get it out. Although he may not say much to you, he communicates his feelings through his actions. 

Kai/Jongin

✾ If you think Xiumin or Kyungsoo are shy, you have not yet met Kai with a crush. He turns into absolute mush the moment he sees you, giggling and blushing whenever you do as much as breathing. You can't even see him because he has resorted to hiding behind the other members, preferably Sehun or Chanyeol, as they are tall enough to obscure him completely.

✾ If he somehow musters up the courage to talk to you, good luck having it go anywhere because he can barely make it through a sentence without giggling. It is obvious to everyone around him that he is smitten with you; his laughs are awkwardly loud, and his eyes are literally shooting hearts.

✾ The moment he manages to ask you to dance, his shy demeanour completely changes. His movement… His expressions… The way he is smirking at you… Maybe you should go and ask Chanyeol whether there is anything left of the holy water he borrowed from Baekyhun.

Sehun

✾ He has one of two ways of acting around his crush: either he acts super bratty or becomes painfully shy. It depends on whether he has met and talked to you before. But, if you are complete strangers, he would be so quiet, hiding in the furthest corner he can find.

Renjun is one of the handful of actual talented idols we have in the age of 2024 where all kpop idols need to do is buy an entirely new face to debut and be deemed “it boy/girl”, makes me sick to my stomach that he cant do his job peacefully bc of people who relentlessly stalk him, purposely sit by him on planes, call his phone day and night.

Yes, you're definitely correct! As a k-pop star, your image in the public is EXTREMELY important. People idolize you. People worship you and your group. People love you and want to be with you. You have to be especially careful of what information you let out to the public.

Idols in the past have been ruined by rumors, scandals, and dating information leaked. People go crazy if they find out that their favorite idol is dating someone else, especially if they have an emotional attachment to them (example of this is Taeyeon from Girls' Generation and Baekhyun from EXO. People were upset when they found out they were dating since the latter promised never to date until he was 35. Death threats were sent to Taeyeon and it got really bad to the point that they broke up "due to busy schedules").

You will have sasaeng fans who are obsessed with you. So you have to be careful with letting information slip in interviews. The game will keep track of this.

born to a 19 year old sex worker on october 28th of 1994, making him a scorpio sun, leo moon, with a capricorn rising.

after finding out she was pregnant, she decided to move in with her aunt and they would raise bomin together.

his mother didn't know the father, so she reached out to every rich client she had & got as much money as she could so she could try and give her child the life she'd never had.

from a young age, he showed an affinity for music.

when he entered school, he joined any musical extracurricular they had available. he was a natural at everything music related.

he eventually began busking at 13 to earn some extra money for his mom and aunt.

he was approached by a scout for a relatively unknown company, he at first thought it was a scam but after some encouragement from his aunt he decided to take the scout up on his offer.

he trained for five years at this company, even dropping out of school to focus on training while working.

in 2012 when he was 18 he debuted in a six member group named apollo (based on b.a.p, daehyun vc) where he was the main vocalist & face of the group.

known for his mischievous behavior amongst fans, he quickly became the most popular member.

his group quickly gained massive success and put their company on the map.

bomin had a massive issue with sasaengs during the height of his success, but his company refused to take action because "any press was good press"

the company became greedy and withheld pay from him and his members, paying them next to nothing for the work they had put in.

however, in 2014, the six members filed a lawsuit against their company saying their company had not paid them.

the group entered a hiatus until 2015 and eventually a settlement was reached, but bomin still decided to leave the group.

he floated around different entertainment companies for three years, attempting a solo debut that gained little to no attention.

bomin had become bitter and jaded about the industry. he was always angry and could never seem to calm down.

he eventually began to abuse cocaine, which didn't help his anger but certainly distracted him enough to prevent his anger from coming out.

he periodically released music on soundcloud, but never anything else.

he was living off the settlement from the lawsuit and the bit of money he had earned from his solo career until early 2023, when it began to run out due to his addiction and lavish lifestyle.

bomin decided to reenter the industry, but not as an idol, as a vocal coach. he figured he had enough experience to help guide the new generation of idols down the right path while providing them top tier vocal training.

he reached out to infinite during their tour and was hired during it, he stayed back for a good majority of it but was spotted with idols a lot during the final leg.

currently, bomin has been california sober for four months. (if u dont know california sober is only drinking and smoking weed)

he's stubborn as shit and sarcastic, if u make a typo in a text he will not let it go unnoticed.

fights for what he believes in always, part of the reason the lawsuit took over a year to settle.

a bit of a hopeless romantic, but always unlucky in relationships.

tough love is his thing. bullying too but in a caring way.

has no problem being annoying. he knows how to push people's buttons and will do so when he's bored.

while he can be obnoxious as shit, he is also very loyal.
