How To Fix Sims 3 Error Code 12 ?

The error code 12 which can be encountered while playing The Sims 3 is quite an annoying error which has been bugging users for a while now. The error itself prevents the users from saving their progress at all, making the game entirely unplayable. Being able to save your progress is vital in any game and The Sims 3 is no exception at all.

There are a lot of solutions suggested by people online which are confirmed as working by other players and our suggestion is to take a look at these solutions before you give up on the game. Good luck!

Solution 1: Increase The Pagefile On Your PC

The pagefile is a sort of a last resort where Windows goes to when it runs out of physical RAM memory. When your memory gets depleted, the system will use this preoccupied space on your hard drive in order to free up more RAM for the applications which are being actively used.

Note that your hard drive’s speed is much slower than RAM’s so increasing the pagefile greatly is not nearly the same as adding new physical memory but it can help and users have confirmed that adding some more physical memory on their PCs helped solve the error code 12.

Right-click on the This PC icon which is usually located on your Desktop or in your Libraries and choose the Properties option.

Click on the Advanced system settings “link” at the right of the window and navigate to the Advanced tab.

Under the Performance section, click on Settings and navigate to the Advanced tab of this window.

Under the Virtual memory section, click on Change. If the check box next to the “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” option is checked, uncheck it and choose the partition or drive where you wish to add more paging file memory.

After you have selected the correct disc, click on the radio button next to custom size and choose the Initial and Maximum size. The rule of thumb to solve the problem with The Sims is to allocate two gigabytes extra than you already used. Make sure you set the initial and maximum size to the same value.

Apply the changes and open the game. Try saving your progress and check to see if your issue is resolved.

Solution 2: Try Clearing The Inventory Of Each Individual Sim

Sometimes the players play the game for a long time, making the game saturated in all types of items which are sometimes preventing the game from running normally, especially on PCs which are not so high-end.

This is probably a good reason to simply try and clear out the game by selling some unused items from Sims’ inventories. Sell these items and try running the game and saving your progress again. Plenty of users confirmed that this works!

Solution 3: Fixing The Game’s Confusion

Sometimes the game confuses and thinks that certain files have gone corrupt and it simply won’t save anything or perform some other actions. There are ways to trigger the restore mechanism which should change things back to normal and it includes follow the set of steps below which may be confusing but this method is one of the best ones which can lead to the error code 12 disappearing.

Tab out of the game (do this without actually closing the game by switching windows using Alt + Tab on a PC, or Command + ~ on a Mac).

Open a Windows Explorer or Finder window (depending on the operating system you are using).

Navigate to the location where the save games are saved. The usual locations for the saved games are as follows on different operating systems:

Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10: C >> Users >> USERNAME >> Documents >> Electronic Arts >> The Sims 3 >> Saves

Windows XP: C >>Documents and Settings >> USERNAME >> My Documents >> Electronic Arts >> The Sims 3 >> Saves

Mac OS X: Macintosh HD >> Users >> USERNAME >> Documents >> Electronic Arts >> The Sims 3 >> Saves

Delete any folder whose name ends in .bad extension and has your save game’s name at the beginning (e.g. Michael’s Game.sims3.bad). These are the failed saves you tried performing in the recent time.

Cut the folders that contain your game’s name at the beginning and which end with .sims3 or .backup and paste them into a backup folder which you should create on your desktop. These file are actually the active save games which haven’t gone corrupt yet.

The problem can also be solved without creating these backups but it’s the best to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Try saving your progress again and don’t worry about the lost files. The game will automatically generate new ones, which may cause the saving process to take longer than normal as more data is being copied from RAM into permanent storage.

Solution 4: Reduce The Graphic Settings

The Sims 3 is a quite memory-consuming game but it has a certain cap of memory it can consume (3.7GB on Windows OS and 2GB on Mac OS X). After the game reaches this cap, it can cause various errors and problems and the way to fix this is to reduce the memory consumption of the game.

This can be done by tweaking the in-game settings and reducing them in order to receive better performance. This will also cause the game to looks less quality but it’s definitely a price you’ll have to pay. Also, it’s good to optimize your PC and shut down background apps to free up some memory. Follow the instructions in this article to optimize your PC’s performance for gaming maximally.

Open the game and click on the three dots at the lower left corner. Click on the Options menu and navigate to the Graphics settings tab.

Set the Screen size to a lower setting if you are experiencing low FPS or if you want to get rid of the error code 12. You should also be able to see plenty of sliders such as Texture Detail, Tree Detail, etc. You can try turning them all off or you can turn some of them off and check to see if the issue is resolved. If you are playing on a low-end PC, consider turning left most of these sliders.

Users have also reported that playing the game in Windowed mode reduced the chances of receiving the error code 12 so make sure you try it out in the same screen.

Apply the changes and check to see if the error code 12 still appears.

Solution 5: Make Sure Your Drivers Are Up To Date

Having the latest drivers is definitely a must, no matter what problem you are encountering or what your intentions are with your PC. Outdated drivers often lead to errors which can only be solved by updating them. Unfortunately, no application or game will advise you to update them nor the error code will contain information about it. So, it’s the best if you simply update them as users suggested it fixed the error code 12 for them immediately.

Even if only one driver was causing the issue, you are better off knowing that you updated all drivers, preventing the issue from occurring with another driver.

Select the Start button, type Device Manager, and select it from the list of results.

Expand one of the categories to find the name of your device, then right-click (or tap and hold) it, and select Update Driver. For graphics cards, expand the Display adapters category, right click your graphics card and select Update Driver.

Select Search automatically for updated driver software.

If Windows doesn’t find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer’s website and follow their instructions.

Note: If you are using Windows 10, latest drivers are often installed alongside other Windows updates so make sure you keep your computer up to date. Windows Update is run automatically on Windows 10 but you can check by following the instructions below for a new update.

Use the Windows Key + I key combination in order to open Settings on your Windows PC. Alternatively, you can search for “Settings” by using the search bar located at the taskbar.

Locate and open the “Update & security” section in the Settings app.

Stay in the Windows Update tab and click on the Check for updates button under the Update status in order to check whether there is a new version of Windows available.

If there is one, Windows should proceed with the download process automatically.

A Nifty Workaround for the Error Code 12 ?

Hi folks, I've been doing stuff other than sims 3 but the other day I opened my save and after a few mysterious CTDs it magically fixed itself so after playing for a while I tried to save and it gave me the dreaded error code 12. A few weeks earlier, when I had the error I decided to try something new and it seemingly worked. This time, I had the chance to test it again to see if it would work again. Now, it can be a coincidence or a fluke but it's worth trying. So, some testers are needed. Next time you have this error, please give it a try.

Basically, when I got the save error, on both times, I went into Edit Town mode and entered a lot and draw a wall or something then hit Ctrl-z, went back to Edit Town and hit Save As. Both times, it saved. I don't know if this was mentioned anywhere before. I don't remember reading anything like this but regardless, I believe it's good information. This is not the same as "Try saving in Edit Town/Map View" tip. Since there's an extra step which I've never encountered before on the internet. But, then I live under a rock, so...

It doesn't have to be an empty lot; it can be an unoccupied residential lot or a community lot. But error 12 is known to be followed by a CTD so it's safer to load an empty lot. Just put a wall or a fence somewhere, undo, go back to Edit Town and save as a new save. Hopefully, it's not a fluke. Because reset town thing is annoying and it doesn't always work. Spread the word if this works for you. Happy simming!

Update: I have 3 more save errors this week on different occasions; two of them occured while using @polrbearsims' method which is pointing the camera to the ground with nothing else in view while saving. Unfortunately, this didn't help much in my case, since my current save is really, really borked. I'm on thin ice here... So, in a healthy save it may actually help. Luckily, though, the empty lot method mentioned in this post have worked on three occasions and my game saved. So it can be used as a last resort if you're getting persistent save errors, as long as your game doesn't crash right away. Well, that's that.

Update #2: It seems like I finally managed to make my save stable enough to play for hours without a CTD. The last couple of crashes were apparently caused by my forgetfulness because I didn't delete the contents of CurrentGame.sims3 folder in my frustration. Heh. I only have one save error at the end of my long, long session. And I always save pointing the camera to ground as previously mentioned. The save error was really persistent and luckily my game didnt't crash. So I tried, tried and tried. My empty lot method didn't work either. So I let the game play itself. Dismissed the maid who was abusing the juice keg. Sent my sims here and there. And alternate between the two methods. In the end my game saved. I don't know if these updates would help anyone but I leave it here anyway. This will most likely be my last update. Thanks everyone for commenting and sharing.

Edit 12/6/2021: I made a mistake in the No Sanity Check version that was causing a major bug. And in both versions there were two minor errors that carried over from Pescado's original. I've fixed and updated the files so please re-download! Sorry for the trouble!

I made this a while ago, but never ended up sharing it because I was too indecisive about the parameters. But I've decided to share it as is and just make modifications if anyone requests them.

This is an edit of Pescado's Greater LTW Variety & Sanity to make most career LTWs available to all aspirations (including Pleasure and Grilled Cheese!) Most career LTWs will now be decided by sims' interests (and sometimes personality).

Only tested with Ultimate Collection, but should work as long as you have Nightlife or higher.

Sims 2 Law Enforcement Career Default Replacement - Fuck the Police Edition (Maxis Match. Ish.)

With thanks to @moocha-muses for testing, chance card ideas, and providing the kick in the ass necessary to make me complete it.

UPDATE 15-Jun-2020: the LTW memory icon wasn’t updated, because EA made this whole thing out of bloated, rotten spaghetti code that doesn’t make any sense. I’ve updated the main file to fix this, but if you’ve already downloaded, just put this little file into your downloads and that should cover it.

Under a cut because holy shit I’m a verbose little fucker.

This is a default replacement for the Base Game Law Enforcement careers, both teen/elder and adult, renamed and remade into Emergency Services. Only the Captain Hero level remains; everything else has been changed to firefighters, social workers, and the like. Yes, I’m aware that firefighters don’t usually become social workers in real life, but concert pianists don’t usually become rock gods and that’s default Maxis behavior so nyah.

I did my best to keep it Maxis Match-y, meaning that the salaries and promotion requirements are roughly equivalent to those of other careers, and the style tends toward goofy. There are brand new descriptions for 12 levels (3 teen + all adult except Captain Hero), with chance cards that hopefully capture the same feeling as the vanilla ones. The icons for the career and the associated LTW have been changed to a firefighter’s bugle. Uniforms and carpools have been changed (no new ones, just using existing game materials) to make sense. (The social work level doesn’t use the existing social worker uniform due to the lack of a male version, and I couldn’t figure out how to make the firetruck show up as a carpool, but they’re still close enough.)

This DR should not conflict with existing mods other than other replacements for the career. (If you have replacements for cars or outfits used in this mod, it’ll automatically pick them up.) I think it should work with Midge’s Playable Cops, but it’ll look kind of weird. But I guess if you’re getting a “fuck the cops” mod, you don’t want playable cops anyway. (No, I will not be making a playable social workers/firefighters mod.)

MAKE SURE ANY EXISTING SIMS IN THE LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREER ARE HOME BEFORE YOU PUT THIS IN. Since I changed the hours of some of the levels, your sims could be stuck at work for a very long time unless you reset them. You don’t want that.

LTW behavior has been left alone, so it’ll pick up whatever your game already uses (family or popularity in the vanilla game). The fingerprint scanner is still the reward, and it still attaches to the bio and psych majors. I will likely mod this at some point as part of a career/major overhaul. (ETA: 20 years.)

The forecast predicts a 100% chance of typos, so let me know if you catch those (or, worse, errors), and I’ll fix them. I will not, however, be making new versions with different levels, although if you want to use mine as a base, you can, and I’ll be happy to explain the process. Additionally, I’ve only done string replacements for US and UK English (and the UK is just US pasted over - sorry, Brits), but if you’d like to translate to your language, let me know and we can figure it out.

Drop both files into your Downloads folder, as usual, and that should change every Law Enforcement-related thing to Emergency Services, except one: the LTW UI text. To change that, you’ll have to mod your game files. Here’s how:

1) Go to your Program Files> EA Games> [latest EP]> TSData> Res> Text folder. 2) Make a backup of the Wants file. Put it somewhere safe. MAKE THE BACKUP. Make multiple backups, even! BACK IT UP. 3) [If you already know your computer allows you to mod within the game files, skip this. Mine doesn't, so I have to do this.] Make a working copy of the Wants file. This should be different from your backup. Seriously. Always have a backup. 4) Open your working copy in SimPE. 5) Sort by name or by instance and find Become Super hero [instance 0x00000B63 (2915)]. 6) Click it. 7) From the drop-down menu, select your language. 8) Go to 0x0003 (3). 9) In the "String" box, change both instances of Law Enforcement to Emergency Services. 10) Click "Commit File". The name in the Resource List should now be italicized. 11) Save. The italics should go away. 12) If you made a working copy, exit and paste that into the folder. You'll need admin privileges for this; if Windows asks for them, allow it. 13) Open the file in the Text folder and confirm that the changes stuck - depending on the finickiness of your system, it may take some fiddling. 14) Once confirmed, load your game to ensure it worked. If you broke the file, the game should crash during loading. Put in your backup and try again. 15) If you didn't make a backup, here's one that should be M&G/UC compatible. (If you have a different configuration, let me know and I'll see if I can't track it down for you.)

In addition, I have a complete-but-untested edit to change level 10 of Intelligence to International Super Spy, and a half-complete edit of Slacker to fix the classism and general yuck. Let me know if you’re interested in those, or if you have ideas for other careers that needed to be decrapified (Military and Criminal in particular). Or heck, if you’re interested in the total career/major overhaul I’m working on to fix a million weird problems, let me know, and maybe I’ll get it done before the heat death of the universe!

Why Ts3!?

Okay, rant ahead, you've been warned.

I have spent the last 3 days, 3, trying to fix my game. First I was getting the glitch where a sim cancels the age up interaction and then will not actually age up. So I was researching into that and through a script error I was able to tell that it is most likely related to Nraas mods and aging sims up and down is CAS to see how they looked. So... I deleted all my nraas mods and vowed to stop peeking at how my sims will look (sad times).

Unfortunately that doesn't actually fix the sims who are already glitched, it just (hopefully) prevents it from happening. So I still had to manually age up two of my sims and then manually progress their lives.

Then after all that was sorted, my game started to become almost unplayable. I kept getting error code 12 and random crashes. So I upped my virtual memory, made sure vsync was on and started playing in full screen again. It. Still. Happened.

When I finally went to give up and start a new save, my game go the spinning wheel of death and didn't save any of the pre work to set up the save.

THEN I started a new save and brought over the whole family (including some who already moved out) and now my family tree is glitched.

Guys, I love this game and could never and would never leave it. But holy crap! No wonder I never actually finished a legacy challenge, my game craps out with the second.

Sigh, hopefully a new save, despite the family tree being wonky, will allow my game to get its shit together. Wish me luck!

Will the real rules please stand up?

One of my pandemic projects is to map the differences between a pointed and an unpointed text of the Hebrew Bible. I am doing this using the very memorable and capable left to right version of the square text called SimHebrew.

I had 'my own version' of a left-to right abbreviation in capital letters and with a few punctuation marks for the gutturals aleph and ayin. But I converted to the lower case version developed by Jonathan Orr-Stav. (Such a Latin-letter code is an abbreviation because it takes one byte as opposed to 7 bytes in rendered Unicode, and one byte as opposed to 2 internally. Using a Unicode database is really awkward for me and the technology was new 10 years ago so it was a non-starter.)

My method of data capture is to use the unpointed Mechon-Mamre text that can be downloaded from their site (one book at a time) and to run it through the SimHebrew converter here. Then to manipulate the text in notepad until I have legitimate insert statements for my database. This is somewhat prone to error but eventually I get a clean script. (I use a combination of Word and Notepad for the necessary global changes.)

After this I create a temporary table that matches: book, chapter, a conversion of the alef-betic verse number to a real verse number, and a word by word Hebrew word in SimHebrew, full pointed text word from the Leningrad codex, the stem code, raw word form, and semantic domain from my database, the word number relative to the start of the verse, and the word id (assigned by an Oracle sequence and connecting to my word table).

I recently added 2 Kings to my data. At first I assigned the wrong chapter numbers - a little oversight. That resulted in over 5000 differences in my calculations. When I fixed the issue, the differences went down to about 230. I then discovered that M-M is treating דִּבְיוֹנִ֖ים (dbivn) which they render as dung of a dove as two words (db ivnh - apparently a poor substitute for salt). Fixing those 4 instances dropped my mismatches by 100. Then word by word I work through the remainder until the differences are accounted for.

My program that calculates the words also suggests a code snippet that will fix any discrepancy (as long as I put it in the right place in the code.) The program as it stands gets 99% of the words right on first pass now. So my predicted SimHebrew Bible is about 99% right. Sorry - for the Bible, that's not good enough.

About this time in the history of the project, I ask, Is there a better way? I know I can finish the way I have begun and my brute force spelling changes are next to 0. I have over a third of the words in my test data now and over 75% of the stems represented. But the code is specific to prefix and suffix and sometimes to particular vowel combinations in the WLC. What are the real rules?

Native speakers who 'just know' the pronunciation - what are they really doing? Certainly they have retention in memory by word form, by context, and by stem. But can I get the program to discover the shortcuts that people use? And in some ways see what they are doing. (And thereby discover the nature of the evolution of language usage.)

Here's an example: the 31 uses so far of עצר (yxr)

For yxr, the following rules are noted.

First you see that the holem is rendered as /o/ in lines 1 and 2 and others. This is default, but some words with some exceptions do not render the o.

Next (line 3) you will note that the qamats is not rendered as /o/ (or vav for rtl Hebrew) but it is in line 4, but the qamats under the second letter of the stem is rendered with prefix /i/ and /t/ in each case without suffix.

Tsere is rendered as /i/ in line 6 and 12 - but only the tsere under the last letter of the prefix. (I would like to color code these but the new editor absolutely ruins rtl display with embedded color coding.)

Notice that the final h is dropped in line 19.

Lines 26 and 27 would have rendered the qamats in the closed syllable as /o/ if the suffix had not been /u/. That's a general rule - but there are exceptions here too and exceptions to the exceptions.

All that is pretty straightforward. But what are the real rules?

Some of my rules are miles long conditions; strings of stems with prefix and suffix combinations and the occasional appeal to an odd Unicode value.

The 'rules' are long for when to render hireq as /i/.

200 distinct stems which do not contain a yod are allowed to render hireq as yod without exception.

Another 281 allow hireq as yod on an exception basis.

Only 7 stems containing a yod disallow hireq as yod.

Another 46 disallow it on an exception basis.

Hireq is usually ignored in a closed syllable - but there are exceptions and exceptions by word form to the exceptions (only 8 stems).

Hireq is rendered as /ii/ for several reasons. When the prefix is i, and for tsere, patah, and qamats occasionally. What! these also are rendered as o or v sometimes. Who can know?

Any ideas?

I have been debating whether to design a data table for the rule combinations. I don't want to do it unless I cannot simplify the code. Last time I asked I discovered several simplifications. Looking for more...

Wikipedia - How to game programming?

Game programming, a subset of game development, is the software development of video games. Game programming requires substantial skill in software engineering as well as specialization in one or more of the following areas, which overlap heavily to create a game: simulation, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, physics, audio programming, and input. For massively multiplayer online games, additional areas, such as network programming and database programming are often included. Though often engaged in by professional game programmers, many novices may program games as a hobby.

Development process

Professional game development usually begins with a game design, which itself has several possible origins. Occasionally the game development process starts with no clear design in mind, but as a series of experimentation. For example, game designer Will Wright began development of The Sims by getting programmers to experiment with several ideas.

Prototyping

Programmers are often required to produce prototypes of gameplay ideas and features. A great deal of prototyping may take place during pre-production, before the design document is complete, and may help determine what features the design specifies.

Prototypes are developed quickly with very little time for up-front design and mostly act as a proof of concept or to test ideas. They are not expected to work flawlessly, but are developed to try out new, sometimes exotic, ideas.

Game design

Main article: Game design

Though the programmer's main job is not to develop the game design, the programmers often contribute to the design, as do game artists. The game designer will solicit input from both the producer and the art and programming lead for ideas and strategies for the game design. Often individuals in non-lead positions also contribute, such as copywriters and other programmers and artists.

Programmers often closely follow the game design document. As the game development progresses, the design document changes as programming limitations and new capabilities are discovered and exploited.

Production

During production, programmers may create a great deal of source code to create the game described in the game's design document. Along the way, the design document is modified to meet limitations or expanded to exploit new features. The design document is very much a "living document", much of whose life is dictated by programmer's schedules, talent and resourcefulness.

While many programmers have some say in a game's content, most game producers solicit input from the lead programmer as to the status of a game programming development. The lead is responsible for knowing the status of all facets of the game's programming and for pointing out limitations. The lead programmer may also pass on suggestions from the programmers as to possible features they'd like to implement.

With today's visually rich content, the programmer must often interact with the art staff. This very much depends on the programmer's role, of course. For example, a 3D graphics programmer may need to work side by side with the game's 3D modelers discussing strategies and design considerations, while an AI programmer may need to interact very little, if at all, with the art staff. To help artists and level designers with their tasks, programmers may volunteer or be called upon to develop tools and utilities. Many of these may be for a specific purpose and can be buggy due to time constraints (time for development of such tools is often not included in a game's schedule) as well as because they are only for in-house use anyway. Many game tools are developed in RAD languages for quicker development and may be discarded after the completion of the game.

Testing

Main article: Game testing

The formal quality assurance testing process, performed by professional game testers, begins well into game development. High-budget titles may begin testing with the first playable alpha, while low-budget and casual games might not enter testing until a release candidate is ready. The programmers' task is to fix errors and bugs as such are discovered by the QA teams.

Nearing completion

Final tasks include "polishing" the game, such as programmers fixing occasional bugs—from minor to catastrophic—that may arise during the last phases of testing.

Game developers may have a beta testing period, but the definition of such varies from developer to developer. Often a beta contains all of the game's features, but may have a few bugs or incomplete content. Few games are given a public beta period, for example, to measure stress tolerance for game servers.

When the game is deemed complete, it is said to have "gone gold" and is shipped off to the publisher. Depending on circumstances, the publisher may then subject it to its own quality assurance or may begin pressing the game from the gold master.

Maintenance

Once a game ships, the maintenance phase for the video game begins. Programmers wait for a period to get as many bug reports as possible. Once the developer thinks they've obtained enough feedback, the programmers start working on a patch. The patch may take weeks or months to develop, but it's intended to fix most bugs and problems with the game. Occasionally a patch may include extra features or content or may even alter gameplay.

Duration

Most modern games take from one to three years to complete. The length of development depends on a number of factors, but programming is required throughout all phases of development except the very early stages of game design.

Tools

Like other software, game development programs are generated from source code to the actual program (called the executable) by a compiler. Source code can be developed with almost any text editor, but many professional game programmers use a full integrated development environment. Once again, which IDE one uses depends on the target platform.

In addition to IDEs, many game development companies create custom tools developed to be used in-house. Some of these include prototypes and asset conversion tools (programs that change artwork, for example, into the game's custom format). Some custom tools may even be delivered with the game, such as a level editor.

Game development companies are often very willing to spend thousands of dollars to make sure their programmers are well equipped with the best tools. A well outfitted programmer may have two to three development systems and multiple monitors dominating their office or cubicle.

Once the game's initial design has been agreed upon, the development language must be decided upon. The choice depends upon many factors, such as language familiarity of the programming staff, target platforms, the execution speed requirements and the language of any game engines, APIs or libraries being used.

For personal computers, the language selected may be little more than a matter of preference. Language bindings for popular libraries such as SDL and Allegro are widespread,[1][2] and the performance gap between idiomatic code written in modern compiled languages is negligible.[3][4] The most popular languages are usually procedural/object-oriented and implemented via compilers; for example, C,[5] C++,[5][6] and Java.[7] However, developers may take into account domain-specific features, such as interfacing with the operating system, and resilience to reverse engineering for online video games.[8] Many games are not written in one language exclusively, and may combine two or more languages; For example, Unity, a popular game engine, has different pieces written in C, C++, and C#.

For consoles, the support of the target platform is usually the most considered factor. In the past, video games for consoles were written almost exclusively in assembly due to limited resources in terms of both storage and processing speed.[9] However, as technology has advanced, so have the options for game development on consoles. Nintendo,[10] Microsoft, and Sony[11] all have differing SDKs for their Wii U, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 consoles, respectively.

High-level scripting languages are increasingly being used as embedded extensions to the underlying game written in a compiled programming language, for the convenience of both the original developer and anyone who would wish to mod the game. Lua is a very popular choice, as its API is written in ANSI C and the language is designed to be embedded into other applications.[6][12] Many developers have created custom languages altogether for their games, such as id Software's QuakeC and Epic Games' UnrealScript.

APIs and libraries

A key decision in game programming is which, if any, APIs and libraries to use. Today, there are numerous libraries available which take care of key tasks of game programming. Some libraries can handle sound processing, input, and graphics rendering. Some can even handle some AI tasks such as pathfinding. There are even entire game engines that handle most of the tasks of game programming and only require coding game logic.

Which APIs and libraries one chooses depends largely on the target platform. For example, libraries for PlayStation 2 development may not be available for Microsoft Windows and vice versa. However, there are game frameworks available that allow or ease cross-platform development, so programmers can program a game in a single language and have the game run on several platforms, such as the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP and Microsoft Windows.

Graphic APIs

Today, graphics are a key defining feature of most games. While 2D graphics used to be the norm for games released through the mid-1990s, most games now boast full 3D graphics. This is true even for games which are largely 2D in nature, such as Civilization III.

The most popular personal computer target platform is Microsoft Windows. Since it comes pre-installed on almost ninety percent of PCs sold, it has an extremely large user base.[citation needed] The two most popular 3D graphics APIs for Microsoft Windows are Direct3D and OpenGL. The benefits and weaknesses of each API are hotly debated among Windows game programmers.

DirectX is a collection of game APIs. Direct3D is DirectX's 3D API. Direct3D is freely available from Microsoft, as are the rest of the DirectX APIs. Microsoft developed DirectX for game programmers and continues to add features to the API. The DirectX specification is not controlled by an open arbitration committee and Microsoft is free to add, remove or change features. Direct3D is not portable; it is designed specifically for Microsoft Windows and no other platform (though a form of Direct3D is used on Microsoft's Xbox, Windows Phone 7.5 smartphones and mobile devices which run the Pocket PC operating system).

OpenGL is a portable API specification. Code written with OpenGL is easily ported between platforms with a compatible implementation. For example, Quake II, which uses OpenGL, was ported from Windows to Linux by a fan of the game. OpenGL is a standard maintained by the OpenGL Architecture Review Board (ARB). The ARB meets periodically to update the standard by adding emerging support for features of the latest 3D hardware. Since it is standards based and has been around the longest, OpenGL is used by and taught in colleges and universities around the world.[citation needed] In addition, the development tools provided by the manufacturers of some video game consoles (such as the Nintendo GameCube, the Nintendo DS, and the PSP) use graphic APIs that resemble OpenGL. OpenGL often lags behind on feature updates due to the lack of a permanent development team and the requirement that implementations begin development after the standard has been published. Programmers who choose to use it can access some hardware's latest 3D features, but only through non-standardized extensions. The situation may change in the future as the OpenGL architecture review board (ARB) has passed control of the specification to the Khronos Group in an attempt to counter the problem.

Other APIs

For development on Microsoft Windows, the various APIs of DirectX may be used for input, sound effects, music, networking and the playback of videos. Many commercial libraries are available to accomplish these tasks, but since DirectX is available for free, it is the most widely used.

For console programming, the console manufacturers provide facilities for rendering graphics and the other tasks of game development. The console manufacturers also provide complete development systems, without which one cannot legally market nor develop games for their system. Third-party developers also sell toolkits or libraries that ease the development on one or more of these tasks or provide special benefits, such as cross-platform development capabilities.

Game structure

The central component of any game, from a programming standpoint, is the game loop. The game loop allows the game to run smoothly regardless of a user's input or lack thereof.

Most traditional software programs respond to user input and do nothing without it. For example, a word processor formats words and text as a user types. If the user doesn't type anything, the word processor does nothing. Some functions may take a long time to complete, but all are initiated by a user telling the program to do something.

Games, on the other hand, must continue to operate regardless of a user's input. The game loop allows this. A highly simplified game loop, in pseudocode, might look something like this :

The loop may be refined and modified as game development progresses, but most games are based on this basic idea.[14]

Game loops differ depending on the platform they are developed for. For example, games written for DOS and many consoles can dominate and exploit available processing resources without restraint. However, games for a modern PC operating system such as Microsoft Windows must operate within the constraints of the process scheduler. Some modern games run multiple threads so that, for example, the computation of character AI can be decoupled from the generation of smooth motion within the game. This has the disadvantage of (slightly) increased overhead, but the game may run more smoothly and efficiently on hyper-threading or multicore processors and on multiprocessor platforms. With the computer industry's focus on CPUs with more cores that can execute more threads, this is becoming increasingly important. Consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 already have more than one core per processor, and execute more than one thread per core.

Hobbyists

The only platforms widely available for hobbyists to program are consumer operating systems. This is because development on game consoles requires special development systems that cost thousands of dollars. Often these must be obtained from the console manufacturer and are only sold or leased to professional game development studios. However, Microsoft used to distribute a game development framework, XNA, which runs on both Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360. XNA was discontinued, but other projects like MonoGame and SharpDX are trying to allow the same access for game coding. Games written for Windows often can be ported to Xbox with few changes. This allows individuals and small teams to develop games for consoles. Some hobbyists also develop homebrew games, especially for handheld systems or obsolete consoles.

Some software engineering students program games as exercises for learning a programming language or operating system.

Some hobbyists may use software packages that help with game development, such as Adobe Flash, Unity, pygame, Adventure Game Studio, GameMaker: Studio, Godot, UDK, or Construct.
