A lot of the time when people say a character is a golden retriever I’m like “that breed does not mean what you think it means” but you know what? Charles is a golden retriever

He’s affectionate and friendly and energetic and smiles all of the time always, you kick him and he’ll still smile and run right back to you after

But also Goldens are typically ranked as the fourth most intelligent dog breed, after only Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds, but everyone always reaches for them as a metaphor for “no thoughts head empty just fluff and love”

And that’s Charles too. He announces Edwin as the brains and keeps his smile on and bounces around and is so casually sweet everyone figures he must be running on vibes alone and actually when they’re back in the office he’s the one doing the more visibly nerdy magic, the stuff you’d normally assign to your autistic-coded Q-archetype basement-recluse wizard, he’s creating complex enchanted items and writing runes and mentally managing hundreds to thousands of items in his bag. And he’s just as much a detective as Edwin is.

He just also grins and jumps and projects friendliness like his life depends on it, and people assume.

I am a Charles Rowland slut okay and this is why I can say how much he fucking annoys me with his whole act towards Crystal in the beginning. Listen

He's such a teenage boy about it, which is annoying already- you know when your friend has a new crush and then suddenly everything is about the crush? You'll at least roll your eyes at that, it can get frustrating really fast.

But THEN. BUT THEN

Since he is not, in fact, a normal teenager as much as he wants to pretend he is, he's actively bringing a stranger into the agency which is not only his and Edwin's business but also their home.

(this has nothing on Crystal btw. She has no memories or fucks to give. She's totally valid for going along with whatever happens)

Imagine you share a house with your best friend and they suddenly drop someone on the couch and announce the person is staying. What the fuck.

AND TO MAKE THINGS WORSE, Charles spends days if not weeks choosing Crystal's side in almost every argument. When he says he agrees with Edwin on something he even goes "I know, I know" and rolls his eyes like he hasn't been with Edwin for 30 fucking years agreeing on a bunch of things.

(It's funny how then, in episode 6, when he doesn't want to take up Monty's case, he thinks Edwin will agree with him. Hah. How the turn tables, etc)

It bothers me so much and it has nothing to do with the romantic part of it, but with the fact Charles is just not being a good friend. It's no wonder Edwin is being such a bitch, although he too is missing the mark and letting it all out on Crystal who is literally just there.

Anyway. I love Charles with all my heart and that's why I reflect on his flaws and shitty behaviors too. And everything turned out well in the end, yeah, yeah, but ugh dude c'monnnnn

absolutely crazy to me that there's people who genuinely think that Crystal is the meaner one when it comes to her arguments with Edwin

at one point, my girl opened up about how she felt trapped by the demon who had violated her, and Mr Edwin Payne over here was like, "well, now you know how we feel!1!1!" in regards to the poor lass just having to tag along with them because she's got no memories, no clue who she is, and nowhere to go. be fucking for real

I love tony putting Gregory on a pedestal I love the concept of even post-ggy survival if he still held this idea of Gregory in his head because Gregory has ALWAYS been a mystery to him and one he works tirelessly to solve. gregory moves on and builds a life with vanessa and Freddy and mellows out but tony still thinks of Gregory as this goal to reach and what would happen if he finally did?

if he solved gregorys mystery and found him and confronted him about what happened and how he tried to kill him. if Gregory was just happy to reconnect with someone from his old life but tony still hasnt shook that pedestal he put Gregory on yet.

they become friends and bond and get closer but Gregory notices that tony comments on things he learns about him but never asks Gregory anything. if Gregory told tony that he isnt something to put a magnifying glass over and that he only cares about him because he was life's greatest mystery to tony for a year, and hes treating him like he isnt a person but an invisible goal to reach only tangible to tony

if tony had been so stuck in his head obsessing over figuring out why what happened happened that he never grew or changed and he was the same. all of his family and friends thought he was stuck on the horror of the event and traumatized but he was really stuck on Gregory. but he wasnt stuck on Gregory at all, he was stuck on the mystery of him

tony realizing this and that he'd stayed 12 even though he turned 13 a year ago. he has a major wake up call and the fog sorta clears from his mind. hes been a bad friend. hes always been a bad friend, and he doesnt want to be anymore. hes been such an idiot
