A new inter-city bus service is up and running in Edmonton.
FlixBus is a low-cost bus service offering trips to Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge.
The Munich-based company took over Greyhound Lines Inc. in 2021. It started service in Edmonton on Friday.
There will be four daily trips from Edmonton to Calgary and Red Deer. One bus a day will travel to Lethbridge, with stops in Claresholm, Fort McLeod and Okotoks.
"Edmonton and Calgary, as much as we may feel there's a rivalry, there's also tons of mutual connections and families and friends. So just enabling more of that visiting, connecting, I think it's a really positive thing," said Edmonton Coun. Anne Stevenson. [...]

Who had the happiest childhood ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
well over a year later i finally tackle this question! it was at the bottom of the box because one of my weaknesses is drawing children, and another one is the necessary historical research to draw their childhoods :' ) but i really wanted to start imagining them because it's very important to the overall story i'm trying to tell here.
here's the main gang, who were children at one end of the 19th century or another. I don't really know how to answer the question (they all lived through some very rough times, even if they didn't know as much) but I can give a little bit of an explanation for the times they grew up in...
[but most importantly, who do you think was the cutest?]
Ed and Jas were kids in the early decades of the 19th century (the regency era). They didn't really have a sense of the outside world much at all (Ed in particular had a very inflated sense of self importance he has since lost) and moved around a lot to follow the fur bearing animals (typically beavers). I feel like they were often getting into scrapes like this!
Cal and Lil grew up in the 1870s when the Northwest Mounted Police were establishing the Canada-US border. Calvin doesn't realize that his childhood enemy Fort Whoop Up and Lilith are the same person, so he tends to think of Lilith as younger than him. Lilith knows better, of course, but I guess she wanted a fresh start. In some ways, they were both only a bit spoiled as kids, though Lilith was less sheltered.
Jo and Mac didn't really interact much as they were isolated for most of their childhoods and didn't really hit their first growth spurts until the 20th century. It's hard to imagine their childhoods (or that Mac was ever a child haha) but they must have been quite lonely, so I figure they had to have pretty big imaginations to cope during the times Ed wasn't around.
Nor, Red and Maddie grew up in the railroad era of the 1880s-90s, although Nor and Maddie were the railroad resort and energy princesses respectively. Red depended far more on carriages and later vehicles passing through on their way between Ed and Cal's places. [also, do not attempt to cuddle bear cubs or feed them chocolate biscuits!!]

going through photos of comics i drew at work in 2019 that i never posted and nothing is funnier to me than this really angsty comic of ed yelling at calvin for ghosting him for 9+ months (and then the smoke alarm going off because he started burning what he was cooking) being immediately followed by this

Mr. Jean: I was there during the time that that fire was burning my town down. Mr. Chair, I was providing food and water to firefighters, I was supporting them, and I was in there. I don’t remember any of them being there. In fact, all I remember from them is a lot of chatter, a lot of talk but no substance. This government has substance, and we are standing up for the firefighters. We are going to make sure that no one falls through any NDP cracks because we actually care about firefighters and we care about the workers in Alberta.
Mr. Shepherd: I agree with the minister. This government has substance. It’s a substance that, if I were to name, would be unparliamentary.

"STRUCK OIL ON THE ATHABASCA," The Morning Leader (Regina). October 7, 1912. Page 2. --- GAS AS WELL AS OIL FOUND IN PAYING QUANTITIES NEAR FORT MCKAY ---- EDMONTON, Alta., Oct. 6. - Representatives of the Athabasca Oil Company, Ltd., with head offices in Vancouver, B.C., announce that oil in commercial quantities and of high grade and a flow of gas has been struck at a depth of 62 feet, eight miles south of Fort McKay on the Athabasca River, where the concern has 4,000 acres of land under lease. It is given out that thorough exploration will be made next year, beginning early in the spring. The company has had borers at work the last two years.
From observations made it is believed that the oil bearing strata at an average depth of 62 feet below the surface covers an unlimited area. the In estimation of the engineers in charge of the drills, and from tests made in which the slope of the land, the nature of the soil and the comparative value of the two samples taken from the hole of last year and that of this year, there is an oil bearing strata growing gradually farther from the surface toward the south as the land slopes toward the north. The hole sunk last year was not drilled to a greater depth than 100 feet. The samples taken at the same depth in the present test hole are said to be similar to that found last year, while when the hole was sunk to 140 feet the soil was said to be of a much thinner consistency and much more valuable
A strata of oil bearing sand, wider but less productive, was encountered at similar depth a few miles south of the present boring last year, but was abandoned and a new bore started and sunk 140 feet. Samples of sand obtained are exceptionally good and a test will be made at once to arrive at the exact percentage of oil. The actual strength of the flow has never been tested, but the drillers who are experts, declare the flow is sufficient to warrant development and will be of commercial value.

Tony Brushett, the executive director of the Salvation Army in Yellowknife, said he's "fairly confident" that his organization has made contact with the 120-or-so individuals that use the shelter regularly.
Brushett said most of Yellowknife's underhoused population was evacuated to Calgary and were connected with shelters and other services in the city for the past three weeks.
Still, some went to Edmonton and Fort McMurray, Alta., among other locations.
"We work with folks there," he said. "Again, we are fairly confident we have contacted most of them."
In Calgary, most people went to the city's Centre of Hope shelter and were registered there with staff. [...]

Note from the poster @el-shab-hussein: Reminder that the Salvation Army is hot garbage and my choosing to post this article is not an endorsement of them or their screwed up evangelical belief system. Tagging: @politicsofcanada, @abpoli

Hooray! The height chart is done!
Obviously there are some minor characters not featured here but, uh, that's for me to figure out later and you to speculate.
and yeahhhhh there's quite a few characters who are the same height but uh. It's Fine. Height inconsistency, for my part, can be attributed to the fact that Many of these characters wear heels in their day to day (so it was fun thinking about their socks, which I don't usually do).
Enjoy!

I knew the fur trade rivalry between the companies was wild but I didn't think it was like
- follow rival company to shout and scare away all the birds so they can't catch any to eat
- plug up their chimney to smoke them out of the house
- gather the others around the house in the middle of the night to howl and bang on the walls
I'm taking a while to finish this chapter because I keep laughing
