Gallerist and curator Holly Fouladi (BFA Painting, 1988) of Fouladi Projects reflects on her time during and after SFAI—from painter to gallery entrepreneur.
Briefly introduce yourself.
I own and curate a contemporary art gallery in San Francisco called Fouladi Projects, which offers relevant and inspiring contemporary fine art in an inviting gallery setting. Though I have an affinity for colorful gestural painting, the artwork in the program spans a wide range of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, video and installation. Once or twice a year the gallery transforms into a store that shows fine art and functional items to further integrate art and life. I like to think that Art is an essential component of living a full life. It provokes us to see things afresh and exalts our senses and connects us to each other and the world in which we live.
Tell us about your time at SFAI.
I was a bit of an introvert when at SFAI so I spent most of my time down in the painting studios. I have fond memories of intimate critiques with my fellow painters and the drawing rooms with live models and artist/teacher Sam Tchakalian yelling drawing corrections at us. Another highlight was the opportunity to spend time with conceptual artist David Ireland and to visit his home on Capp Street.  It was was a real eye opener for me as to what art could be—seeing the beauty in ordinary things, art based on the carrying out of actions. I also remember being inspired by shows in the student Diego Rivera Gallery. One in particular I remember was Barry McGee and his use of space in a way I had not seen before. He hung small houses from the ceiling and installed hundreds of drawings on the entire wall, spilling onto the floor. I look back and wish I’d squeezed out a bit more from my school experience but it was a great start in my journey with the arts….how did I not appreciate that view?
Fouladi Projects has been going strong in the San Francisco art scene. Tell us the story of founding the space.
After graduating from SFAI I continued to make art with the help and encouragement of a small critique group that met every couple weeks. I also found that I was pretty good at putting on shows for our group from my studio. The way I officially fell into the gallery business though was a by chance meeting with an artist named Charles Linder (SFAI Alum) who had art shows from his home/studio. We decided to partner and open a commercial space called Lincart Gallery. We had innovative shows every six weeks and did many art fairs from 2000 until 2009. He was a clever and edgy artist/curator so it was an invaluable experience for me. I started Fouladi Projects in 2010.  My mother was an artist and my father an entrepreneur so seems it was a likely outcome for me to have a gallery. Foremost I understand things from an artist point of view but I also enjoy the challenge of trying to make a business work.
Describe the importance of engaging the public with art through exhibitions, studio visits and personalized art advisory.
I strive to support artists in their creative journey and give them a space to share their work. I equally try to create a friendly environment for people in our community to see and learn about art.
Tell us about some of your exhibitions and events.
One of my favorite shows in the last year was our young Iranian exhibition called After Party that showcased artist born in Iran after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. My intention (as someone who has been married to an Iranian since college) was to give a glimpse into a world that many may not have seen. I also loved the Celebrating Ruth exhibition, showing artists from Ruth Braunstein’s long and enduring program. What a treat it was to spend time with Ruth and hear all her candid stories of the art world. Most recently we did a show called Coming Clean. It was  a collaboration with the non-profit Lava Mae. They turn muni buses into showers for people who don’t have them. It provided an opportunity to think and talk with our community about the many people living on the streets in San Francisco. Fouladi Projects gallery is located on Market Street at Guerrero with large storefront windows so we get quite the view onto the varied on goings of Market Street. Nestled in between Mission, Hayes Valley and a few blocks from Uber and Twitter, one never knows who will walk by.
More and more I know people like to shop on the internet, so I am currently working on a new website with a store and other online platforms. Check out our new site!
Despite the growth of ecommerce and online shopping, for now people still seem to enjoy seeing the work and chatting in person. For the summer we are showing a group show of artists from our program so come by and visit!

Derw release brand new 'Ble Cei Di Ddod I Lawr' single on Ceg Records
Derw started as a project between songwriter Dafydd Dabson and his mum Anna Georgina, a lyricist, after they got to the final of S4C songwriting competition Can i Gymru in 2018 and decided to keep writing together. The band is fronted by Welsh/Iranian singer Elin Fouladi and their debut EP 'Yr Unig Rhai Sy'n Cofio' involves musicians from Welsh acts Zervas and Pepper, Afrocluster and Codewalkers. Drawing on chamber pop influences like The National and Elbow, the band has a strong connection with the past and their family history and is named after Anna's father - Derwas. Their family is full of interesting stories and 'Yr Unig Rhai Sy'n Cofio' (The Only Ones Who Remember) is about making sure these stories are recorded and remembered. The track 'Mikhail' is about a friend Derwas met while studying in Jerusalem in 1926. Mikhail grew up in Russia and his father was part of the imperial navy. One night in 1917, when Mikhail was nine and his mother was away, the Bolsheviks came to his house, took his father into another room and shot him. Mikhail then moved to Palestine with his mother and, when he was 19, met Derwas, a student from Oxford. They then spent years exploring the wilderness together and trying to find peace. The lyrics for 'Silver', the final track of the EP, are taken from a poem written by Anna's mother in the 1930s. She loved writing and had notebooks full of poetry she'd written. She tried several times to get them published but never managed it so it gives Anna and Dafydd a huge amount of pleasure to be able to make use of one of them now. Derw’s first single, ‘Dau Gam’, came out in May on CEG Records. It was made ‘Track of the Week’ on BBC Radio Cymru as well as getting airplay on BBC Radio Wales. The band’s second single, ‘Ble Cei Di Ddod i Lawr’ is out today on CEG Records.

Sri Lanka urged not to violate fundamental rights in the name of combating terror
We the undersigned, who are from and live in the various nation-states of South Asia, express our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones in the serial bomb blasts in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. We express our solidarity with those working tirelessly to address the needs of the injured in the aftermath of this carnage and to sustain interfaith and community relationships. While we support all justice efforts that seek to hold the perpetrators of violence accountable, we also urge the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure that, in the name of combating terror and ensuring national security, fundamental human rights and dignity of all concerned are not violated.
We say this because in all our countries, investigations into terror and anti-terror legislation have been accompanied by consistent and continuing violation of civil and democratic rights. Furthermore, in the name of ensuring national security, successive governments in the region have sought to legitimise their various acts of impunity – directed against not only purported or possible suspects but entire sections of the civilian population. This has led to unaccountable loss of life and a steady erosion of democratic guarantees and institutions, including unaccounted for deaths and disappearances. We note with concern that media reports and remarks by state officials and political leaders in Sri Lanka have pointed to State inaction with respect to warnings by intelligence agencies about possible acts of terror. Such inaction and indifference, we regret to note, amounts to State complicity with the violence that subsequently unfolded. We are also concerned that the ‘owning up’ to these acts by the so-called ‘Islamic State’ (Daesh) might encourage Islamophobic attitudes and expressions, both on the part of the Sri Lankan Government and sections of civil society. Should this happen, Sri Lanka would be tragically drawn in to a familiar international discourse and practice to do with ‘Islamic terror’ with all the resultant tragedies, as we have witnessed across Asia. In a country that has barely recovered from decades of civil mistrust, war and violence, this cannot bode well for its sovereignty, civil peace and economic and social life. We wish to point out that the so-called war on ‘Islamic terror’ has resulted in large numbers of the Islamic faith being persecuted, both in their countries and across the world – and this sadly only enhances the appeal of those who seek to wage war in the name of Islam and what they perceive as Islamic concerns and interests. Thus is set in motion a cycle of violence that benefits no one but the arms trade and industries, and political powers that seek to establish their hegemony in the region at all costs. In this context: nWe support all struggles to ensure transparent and fair pursuit of justice for the victims of the blast. At the same time, we stand with those who are against undemocratic anti-terror laws in Sri Lanka, even if they are purportedly deployed for purposes of investigation and national security. nWe protest attempts to target or persecute those of the Islamic faith, in the name of countering terror, whether by the state or vigilante groups. nWe support Muslim communities in the region that have called for peace and are critical of voices from within that endorse extremist religious positions, which polarise everyday life and interactions, and vitiate meaningful dissent and dialogue. nWe affirm the resilience of diverse cultural and religious traditions in the region that have fostered longstanding habits of mutuality, trust and co-existence. We do not wish for the specificity of local beliefs and traditions, of all faiths, to be drawn into polarising global discourses of religious ‘unity’ and ‘singularity’ imposed from above. The Significance From Different Colors For Youngsters
Parents of such youngsters could be actually elderly managers in significant business and also they carry out certainly not have adequate time for their kids. This will certainly often stimulate a beautiful emotion from calmness and basic approval of attributes's elegance. At that point say no to just about anything your moms and dad or others recommend that have you beyond your planning. The provider quite needs to place a really clear parent company cash flow merely statement. What I did pick up from my moms and dads is how NOT to parent to make sure that is actually the blue sky. The good feature of publishing on Finding Alpha is actually that you usually acquire practical opinions. If even you are actually going everything right (which no human parent may do since none people are best) no solitary treatment for colic work with all little ones or even each time. Certainly never ever interact along with any person (online, through e-mail, via Http://Sportjorgblog.Info phone, face to face or even differently) without first notifying your parent or carer about just what you are actually carrying out. As an example, the Birth Certificate Stand & Holder is a wonderful gift for all moms and dads that desire to honor their child's childbirth. Therefore while one person with aspergers might not be the perfect moms and dad that does certainly not mean that an additional will certainly not be actually. The Parent Catch showcases numerous lovely sets, yet the Evers cattle ranch is the most effective of all of them all. I would claim the utmost purpose from a moms and dad is actually to rear a kid to become an entirely functioning and also private grown-up - an adult who is actually self resistant and also sufficient. Afterwards, when mulling over why pair of reasonably laid-back people drew such a large 'nil points' in the decision-making risks, I realised that these moments of chronic indecision directly associate to being a parent for me. Researchers have found that safe add-on to one moms and dad performs certainly not always coincide with secure attachment to the other moms and dad (Collins & Reed, 1994; McCarthy, Moller, & Fouladi, 2001). Montchavin has a splendid out-of-date community charm with gorgeous stone and also lumber properties, fairly environments and an inviting ambience.
The volume from take pride in you believe as a parent viewing your little one smile before the cam is actually pretty spectacular, I have to accept. And, understanding their interests and enthusiasms provides a parent a possibility to entail themselves in those things as well as motivate them. Think of it. According to singular mama stats that has been actually revealed frequently that much more mamas are tackling that activity, as well as performing a splendid project from sustaining their family without assistance annually. Likewise, if every parent of a newborn produced that decision promptly, no child would certainly ever before have yet another sibling or sister. For your existing target, you could inquire your husband or wife to fraternize your moms and dad and also the kids while you choose a stroll.

After 40 years of mostly single-center, often non-randomized trials with variable patient inclusions, there has been no improvement in survival. It is therefore time for international collaboration in DIPG research, to provide new hope for children, parents and medical professionals fighting DIPG. In a first step towards collaboration, in 2011, a network of biologists and clinicians working in the field of DIPG was established within the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOPE) Brain Tumour Group: the SIOPE DIPG Network. By bringing together biomedical professionals and parents as patient representatives, several collaborative DIPG-related projects have been realized. With help from experts in the fields of information technology, and legal advisors, an international, web-based comprehensive database was developed, The SIOPE DIPG Registry and Imaging Repository, to centrally collect data of DIPG patients. As for April 2016, clinical data as well as MR-scans of 694 patients have been entered into the SIOPE DIPG Registry/Imaging Repository. The median progression free survival is 6.0 months (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 5.6-6.4 months) and the median overall survival is 11.0 months (95% CI 10.5-11.5 months). At two and five years post-diagnosis, 10 and 2% of patients are alive, respectively. The establishment of the SIOPE DIPG Network and SIOPE DIPG Registry means a paradigm shift towards collaborative research into DIPG. This is seen as an essential first step towards understanding the disease, improving care and (ultimately) cure for children with DIPG. Jemima Kirke show at Fouladi Projects Gallery
Fouladi Projects is pleased to present Platforms portraits by painter and RISD alumni Jemima Kirke Exhibition runs March 21 - May10, 2014
A shared thematic perspective runs through Kirke's portraits. The female sitters somehow embody - with their varied, often dour expressions - vulnerability, frustration and suppressed longing thinly disguised beneath cool faux-sophisticated facades. Empathy is the distinguishing feature, one that imbues them with both dignity and life. They exist in depth, not just as marks on the surface. It is impressive to see how effective Kirke has been in creating a mood as she transforms observation and insight into painted images. It makes her art worth looking at and taking seriously.
Tumblr media
Part of her method is her attention to physical flaws, imperfections, which she describes as "part of our individuality". She abandons the traditional goal of rendering the subject "accurately" and aims for "capturing her presence in the room, her expressions, our relationship". This willingness to reinterpret the idea of "likeness" is an important element of Kirke's portraiture.
