Emberfate - Now Live on Steam

I'm super excited to announce that our romance visual novel, Emberfate: Tempest of Elements, is officially released on Steam!

This Steam version is mostly identical to the Itch.io build, but it comes with plenty of Steam achievements for any completionist folks! If you'd like to play the Steam build with your old save files from the Itch.io build and get more info about its compatibility with the Steam achievements, please read the next section of this post under the Read More cut!

The game free to play as usual, but there's a $5.99 DLC for a behind-the-scenes booklet PDF if you're interested in the development process and would like to throw a bit of money my way to help with funding Potato's route DLC (coming in late 2023-ish)!

If you've played Emberfate before and enjoyed it, please please take the time to download the game on Steam and leave a Steam review! We need at least 10 Steam reviews for the game to have a rating on Steam, and the more reviews we have / the higher the rating, the more visibility Emberfate will get so we can lure more people in to become guild leaders! 

Note: I believe you need to have at least 10 minutes of playtime on the game on Steam before it lets you leave a review, so you might have to leave the game running in the background for a little before the Review option pops up.

OLD SAVE DATA ACCESS

If you previously played Emberfate through the free public build, then your saves should immediately be available in this Steam port when you load the game!

If you previously played Emberfate from the Patreon early build, then you’ll have to manually move your saves and persistent data over. You might have to turn on viewing for hidden files / folders, but your save files for the Patreon build should be found in the following folder:

Windows: %AppData\Roaming\RenPy\EmberfateTempestofElements-1631333206

Mac: $HOME/Library/RenPy/EmberfateTempestofElements-1631333206

Linux: $HOME/.renpy/EmberfateTempestofElements-1631333206

Copy all of the .save files and the persistent file over to the new Steam public build save folder, which should be in the following location:

Mac: $HOME/Library/RenPy/EmberfateTempestofElementsPublic-1631333206

Linux: $HOME/.renpy/EmberfateTempestofElementsPublic-1631333206

Then relaunch the game from Steam, and you should be able to see the old save files from the previous Patreon builds. 

If the folder EmberfateTempestofElements-1631333206 listed above is empty for some reason, try checking the game folder of the Patreon build instead. There might be a subfolder called "saves", and if it has the .save files and persistent data file, then proceed as explained above with the contents of this "saves" folder and copy them over to the correct file location. 

ACHIEVEMENTS

If you have old save files & the persistent data file copied over in the right folder, as soon as you launch the game for the first time, it should grant you achievements for any endings you’ve previously unlocked in the Itch.io or Patreon build.

If you load up a Day 8 save file that has these following decisions previously, it should grant you the corresponding achievements upon loading:

Hey honey, I was trying to access the gallaplacidia fics that are hosted on your epub library but thought I could download them, none of them would open - is this just a me thing?

so those are epub files, which need an epub reader. if you're an iOS/mac person, Apple Books will work. the kindle app will also work. if you want to avoid amazon products and/or don't use apple products, there are tons of free epub readers available if you google it. i chose epub because it's a widely accessible format and handy for people who use ereaders for fic (like me).

Calibre is a really great free and open source ebook management software that i highly recommend for anyone who wants to download and manage the organization of fic. there are plugins that make it really easy to bulk download things to build your own archive. which i bring up because it has a function that lets you convert files quickly, like epub to pdf or epub to html, etc etc.

i also took this opportunity to update the archive with pdf files for anyone who doesn't want to go to the effort of all that. and i also added The Bolthole, which i can't remember if i left it out just because it's still accessible on AO3 or if it was just some weird oversight. but either way, the archive is updated with all that now.

since some people asked, here's how i formatted the Trigun manga panels to be printable to make into a bound book! i'm not the best at tutorials, but hopefully this will be helpful.

gather your images and make sure each image is only one page. most of the time when you download manga for reading on a computer, any two-page spreads will be in one image file. locate any and all two-page images and split them down the middle into two separate files. i used GIMP to do this since it's free, but photoshop or whatever you have access to will work.

make sure your files are all PDFs. on a mac, it's pretty easy to right-click an image file, go to Quick Actions, then choose Create PDF. however, there's lots of other ways you can do it, just try to keep the same resolution (so if your original image is 600x1000 pixels, make sure the PDF is too! otherwise your final image won't be as sharp.

number all your files such that putting them in alphabetical order puts the pages in the correct order from start to finish. luckily the files i downloaded were already numbered correctly, so this wasn't as much a concern for me, but i wanted to point it out just in case.

from here i just followed this tutorial from youtube, and this guy does a great job explaining what to do, and your different options. some things to keep in mind though not in the video!

4a. make sure you put your pages in the correct order! remember manga goes right-to-left, so that will likely be backwards to what the software you're using is going to do automatically. if using acrobat, you should be able to sort the files in reverse-alphabetical order and combine them in that order.

4b. make sure your two-page spreads will end up next to each other. in acrobat, you can choose to view two pages of your document at a time. starting from the top (so at the end of the book) go through and check your two-page images. if you get to a point where they don't line up, go back up to the last chapter break and insert a blank page. this will then line them up. do that for the whole document. then, once you're done, go back to the top and either add or remove one blank page (very important!). this will mess up the two-page images in the acrobat preview, but remember that the first and last pages of a book are not next to another page. to be sure, once you format your pdf into a booklet, do a test print of one signature that contains a two-page image to make sure that it lines up correctly!

4c. when adding blank pages to match the page count you'll need for your signatures, if you're adding to the top of the document, be sure to do so two pages at a time. this will keep your two-page images aligned, assuming you followed what i said in 4b. you can also just add all the extra pages at the bottom of the document, which is fine too, but just remember that'll actually be the front of the book.

Calibre & FanFictions

This post aims to explain how to use Calibre to create your own fanfictions collections, keep them updated and create (fancy?) main board for you to take track of your readings, your TBR and much more.

I’m in no way an expert of Calibre and I don’t know phyton nor I’m able to tweak beyond its basics. This post mirrors how I set up my Calibre over the years and some tricks I learnt on the way. If you wish to know more, refer to the official website and its resources (especially the mobilread forum).

What is Calibre?

Calibre is a free and open source software that allows you to organize your ebooks library, to convert between formats, to edit your ebook files (ie adding covers, ToC, changing the CSS), to transfer files to e-readers.

Calibre is a pc (Windows, Linux, Mac) based software. It can’t run on Android/iOS (smartphone/tablet).

Download & Install Calibre

Calibre can be downloaded from the official website.

Once you have downloaded it, run the exe file. 

It will ask you in which language you want to set the interface, where do you want to store your library (just pick/create a folder on your pc. Be aware that this folder will be the domain of Calibre software, you can’t change anything in it manually if you don’t want to corrupt Calibre database. You can select a folder shared over dropbox/onedrive, but to be on the safe side, be sure the sync process is disabled when you are running Calibre).

If you have an e-reader, select your brand and the device type during the basic configuration, otherwise just pick the Generic interface.

Click on Next and then on Finish. Your Calibre Library will open and it will show you something like this:

Adding Books Manually - Basic Procedure

On its own, Calibre can add and process any “ebook like” file (epub, mobi, pdf, etc) you have stored on your pc.

Let’s say you download a FF from AO3 using the “download epub” function.

Just click on “Add Books” and select the file. Calibre will add the file to its folder structure and will fill the metadata embedded in the file and that can be matched with its standard columns:

Clicking on “Edit Metadata” you can manually edit the metadata, generate a standard cover, browse your pc to add a cover, add links (to goodreads or archiveofourown) in the Ids (identifiers field).

For example, to add the link to archiveofourown, go to AO3 page for the fanfiction, copy it, go back to Calibre, click on the icon next to “Ids” and the link will be copied here.

Adding Custom Columns

Calibre comes with its own standard columns, but you will want to add your own columns to keep track of other things.

To add columns, click on Preferences -> Add Your Own Column. There you will see all columns available for the metadata.

Let’s say you wish to track also:

Characters

Relationships

Rating

AO3 Tags

Number of Chapters Posted

WordCount

When a FF was last updated

If a FF is completed or not

A free text where you can add your own comment

You will need to create 9 custom columns. Click on the “plus” icon to start creating them and choose which kind of column you wish to create.

For example, “Characters”, “Relationships”, “AO3 Tags” contain multiple values, so they need to be “Comma separated text, like tags, shown in tags browser” meaning that the text extracted from the “Characters” list will recognize the comma as separator and will treat each “text between commas” as a separate tag, to be shown on the tag browser.

Rating column will be a “Text column shown in tag browser” (since you don’t have multiple values)

Chapters and WordCount will be a Integers, since you will have numeric values there

If a FF has been completed or not will be a Yes/No column

Last Update will be a date kind of column (where you can specify your preferred format):

And finally, “Your Comment” column will be a long text, “like comments, not shown in tag browser”. You can choose if it needs to parse HTML or not, and if you want to add a heading or not:When you have create the columns you need (but don’t worry, you can add/delete any column at any given time), click on “Apply”.

You can notice how all the custom columns you added are clearly marked. 

Take also care of the “lookup name”. That’s how columns are referred everywhere else in Calibre.

After clicking on Apply, Calibre will ask you to restart so to load the new configuration. The new columns will be added at the end:

You can drag and drop them in any position you wish.

To add information, just click on the field or click on “Edit Metadata” again, where you will see now a second tab with the Custom Metadata.

Once you confirm, the data will be shown also in the main interface (where you can still edit them) and all columns you created as “to be shown in the tag browser” will be shown on the left panel:

FanFicFare - The Game Changer

Adding all infos manually is very time consuming, but you can save a lot of time using FanFicFare (FFF).

What is FanFicFare?

FFF is a plugin. As said at the start, Calibre is Open Source, meaning anyone can add to it and over the years many different people created various “add-ons” (plugins) to enhance Calibre experience. The plugins that have been officially validated can be found directly on Calibre by clicking on the arrow next to Preference and selecting the “Get Plugins to enhance Calibre” option.

Over the last year or so I've been trying to replace online services in my life with offline alternatives for a two reasons.

Privacy. I don't have to worry what a bunch of strangers are doing with the files/information I give them. I try to give people as little data as possible; even if I trust the company providing the service in its current state, there is always the chance it will be sold to others I do NOT trust, and by then it's too late; my data is already out there and I don't have a say over what the new owners do with it

Availability: I don't want to depend on third-party service to always be up and running. The service could be having issues, or worse, the entire service could disappear from the internet (looking at all the YouTube to MP3 websites that Google keeps taking offline).I don't want to have to keep hunting down and vetting new services if my preferred one is down for some reason

The privacy aspect especially comes into play when I need to manipulate PDFs; rotating or removing pages, signing documents, converting from PDFs to Word or vice versa, etc.. Often the PDF is sensitive, and even if it isn't, someone could probably infer a bunch of information about you (or someone at your IP) over time based on what you upload.
