The Dollar Store is My Friend - Emergency Preps on a Budget:

Money is tight for most of us. We're living paycheck to paycheck, trying to make ends meet. We have very little in the way of extra funds we can put toward preps. Sure, we'd all love to be able to drop a few thousand dollars on dehydrated food every other month but that just isn't going to happen for most of us. So, here are some ways we can stretch our dollars to get the most bang for our bucks. Even my favorite Dollar Store (Dollar Tree) has been inflated to $1.25 but consumables still go right down the drain or in the trash. Why spend top dollar? With my shift to a Conserver Lifestyle and "Needs vs. Wants" approach to buying, I have a new-found friend; the Dollar Store. These types of stores have different names, depending on where you live, but each item in the store is about $1.25 (as of this posting date - Feb 2023). These stores buy discontinued, B-rated or near-expired goods in mass quantities. Because of this, they get them cheap and can sell them cheap; even paper products. Supplies don't need to be expensive. Dollar Stores, Pawn Shops, Surplus Stores and Yard Sales are some local options. Search for free stuff web sites. If you're adventurous, take a Dumpster Diving excursion. Don't just get stuff because it's free unless you can barter (trade) it for stuff you actually need/want before, or during, a crisis when stores will run out of inventory and people will run out of their supplies. Store, organize and prioritize supplies in easy-to-move containers for quick access and relocation if evacuation is necessary. Electric and fuel may be unavailable for power tools; get hand tools for repairs. Brainstorm about ways to stretch dollars to get the most bang for the buck. Now, it's doubtful that you will find your "favorite brand" and, if you do, it may be near its expiration, but part of being a Conserver is being a good shopper. Now and then I have found cheaper items in my regular grocery store or Walmart but, generally, this is my go-to place for cheap stuff that will go down the drain, toilet or in the trash anyway like shave cream, after shave, razor blades, toothpaste, cleaners, laundry detergent; you get the picture. And, chances are, the next time I visit, the brands that were there before, won't be there again. I don't recommend buying ingestibles (things you will eat, swallow or drink) unless, (1) they are not expired and, (2) you intend to use them before the expiration date. Unless you have money-to-burn or need that expensive perfume or cologne, I highly recommend these types of stores to save money. After 2 yrs. Josephine and Tomas were tired of renovating. They wanted to decorate, and their colorful style goes against the flow. Received, inherited and found are describe their decor. Gadgets with life experience get a new color and a new home with them.

In the kitchen,  all everyday porcelain is stored on open shelves.

Dishes, bowls and jugs are visibly stored in the dark stained display cabinet.  The dining table is inherited. The ceiling light was a gift.

With glass and tin cans, instead of cardboard boxes, storage becomes more beautiful.

With roller, brush and paint, Josephine has given the wall three shades of pink. The table is from Josephine's mother's friend. Yellowish chair, from the give-away page Freecycle.org. The step stool stood in the family's house in the country and the bike is Josephine's.

Everything in the living room is bought used except for the white sofa. The coffee table a trade for planers and old fittings. The large gold-colored floor lamp was in Josephine's brother's house and was to be thrown away. What a pretty room it is, and done on a dime.

In the parents' bedroom there are floor-to-ceiling windows. Bedspread was bought on sale (never pay retail!).

The family is not afraid of colorful walls.

The Scandinavians are masters of making beautiful homes with second finds. I am so inspired by them.

Milk Crate Garden: Grow A Lot Of Veggies In A Little Space

A milk crate garden is a great way to grow a lot of produce in a small space. Gardening in a milk crate is pretty much the same idea as square foot gardening. It’s kind of amazing what you can grow in these happy little plastic boxes. Plantable, stackable and cute, repurposed milk crates grow great gardens.  A milk crate garden is such a clever way to grow a productive garden in a small space. Instead of growing vegetables, herbs and flowers inexpensive flower pots, grow them in stackable, repurposed, plastic milk crates. You can often find these crates on Craig’s List or freecycle.org, or at garage sales, thrift shops and other inexpensive (or free!) sources.

Growing in milk crates is all the design possibilities it opens. You can stack the planted crates on their outer edges, checkerboard-style, to make a living wall of containers. If you fill the stacked crates with vine crops, like cucumbers, squash, and melons, they’ll tumble down your milk crate “wall” and provide a delicious – and beautiful! – a crop of veggies.

Another option is, rather than planting the crops in the open top of each crate, they can also be planted through holes poked through the sides of the crates. You can even make hanging planters out of milk crates by attaching chains with S-hooks to the top edge of the crate and hanging it from a ceiling hook, plant hanger, or shepherd's hook. In other words, with a milk crate garden, your imagination is the only limit!

Landscaping fabric. Make sure you get the fabric. You’ll want it to be 36 inches wide.

Potting soil- good quality soil, you want it nice and fluffy soil that will drain well.

Caring For Your Milk Crate Garden

Because the fabric will wick moisture away from the soil, you’ll have to be diligent about watering your milk crate garden regularly. The plants growing in the crates will be more thirsty than those grown in ceramic or plastic pots.

Fertilize your milk crate garden twice per month with an organic, liquid fertilizer such as compost tea, fish emulsion, or liquid seaweed.

Keep the vegetable plants growing in your crates regularly harvested. Pick beans, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and other vegetables at the peak of their ripeness and the plants will continue to produce for weeks to come.

At the end of the growing season, there’s no need to empty and store your milk crates for the winter, though doing so will prolong the life of the plastic. Come spring, you may have to replace any worn fabric before refilling the crates with fresh potting soil and new plants.

if you’re interested in mutual aid and aren’t sure where to start, i can’t recommend enough joining a local Buy Nothing group. in a nutshell, it’s a totally free gift economy— people give from their own abundance and ask for what they need. it’s indispensable as a recent grad household— we got the majority of our basic furniture, as well as an AC unit through the group— but what i find particularly wonderful are the ways other forms of community aid popup through the group.

i’ve seen people organize meal trains for strangers. people fleeing from domestic violence have gone from a suitcase of possessions to a fully stocked house in 48 hours. home hospices being set up with goods from six different households. cookbook lending. distribution of windfall apples and tomato harvest overabundance. grocery pickup for ill folks. people looking out for listings for others. everything from bread to baby carseats to house paint to pet food.

and much of it is done between strangers, often between people who would not recognize or identify with the term “mutual aid”. it lowers waste, goods go directly to people who need them, and it avoids the sometimes dubious morality of the thrift shop circuit. i’d really recommend it.
