i think season 11 wash has a really interesting arc where like. he comes to understand that the reds and blues are like. people? because like. he definitely CARES about them by the end of season 10 but he’s also very… i am the Adult here who needs to wrangle these children sim troopers because i am their superior leader and they can’t be trusted. while he’s not actively cruel to them the way he was in season 6 he still had the same air of superiority. i am the Freelancer i Outrank You. like you especially see this in his growing friendship with tucker where he’s drilling him (nice) and yelling at him and very much treating him like he was his inferior (i am going to break you) because he’s SO indoctrinated into this military mindset of hierarchy and discipline that it’s only when tucker expresses genuine emotion (he’s gone now and all i have is you) that wash goes. oh. you aren’t just this one dimensional sim trooper are you. you’re a whole ass person with complex feelings and a rich inner world and you are. hurting. and he’s able to look at caboose and see the same. and he goes ohhhh i’m doing a bad job here aren’t i. and he goes back to his own colors instead of churchs and like there’s SOOO much symbolism in this action it’s insane but for this purposes it’s very much. shedding the role of leader that he was put into to be the “church” and instead is just. himself. wash never takes a lead role again after this he’s 100% supporting. like. freckles shake is him being a self sacrificial little bitch but it’s also very much him trusting that tucker will be able to save him. this is not an action wash would have taken at the beginning of the season.

something so interesting about writing a sort of pfl arc fix-it au is that a lot of the really awful characterization gets fixed by just. making south in the right and york in the wrong. and changing nothing else about the characterization. like

okay im always thinking about like. the version of pfl that was implied in 6-8 and the way it specifically emphasized the conflict between the freelancers. the fucked up nature of the leaderboard and the competition. "we were a competitive bunch. we had to be." theres hints of this in 9-10 but its really just carolina and south being unnecessarily uptight about the rankings and a vague suggestion of an "in group" that doesnt actually go anywhere.

but like. what if the rankings genuinely mattered and the freelancers had to fight for the right to get an ai at ALL, not just to be the first one to get one. what if there were more consequences to falling in the ranks than some light criticism. then high-ranking agent "are we the good guys?" york becomes complicit in this fucked up system designed to create the perfect soldier by any means necessary, and never-good-enough agent "i never GOT an ai" south becomes a victim of it. instead of south caring too much out of. pride? loyalty to freelancer? its a preservation instinct and york et al are like "whats HER deal" because the system works fine for them.

then naturally south would be one of the first to defect from the project because what has it done for her?? while someone like york is enjoying the perks of being a highly ranked freelancer agent with an ai and not thinking too hard about it. like. in this scenario south would never be the one defending freelancer from being raided by north - it would absolutely be the other way around. and its so much more interesting that way!

anyway. i can guess why they made the most bland character in existence the good guy and the raging bitch the enemy (ahem. misogyny). but like???? give me the weaponized indifference antagonist and violent resistance protagonist!!! that rules!!!! (well. you dont have to give it to me. im already writing it myself lmfao this is taken directly from my au)

it’s not just that Martha ended up with Mickey i mean. if they had a 1-minute interaction i would be like sure, they couldn’t get Tom Ellis to return and since RTD would not let his female characters without a male love interest for even a moment... fine whatever, i’d hate it all the same but i could still be accepting. it’s just how little care and respect for her character went into it that breaks my heart. i mean Rose’s ending was shitty as well but RTD obviously put soooooo much thought into the Love Story angle that it’s serviceable. but Martha’s was just like. thrown in there. she apparently faked her death (?? what about her family?? the one she left the doctor to take care of??) to go freelancing (??) as an alien fighter with fucking. mickey of all people. and then they both get a 2min scene where she doesn’t even get to interact with the Doctor at all. just complete disrespect.
