U.S. Businesses Brace for Potential Trump Tariffs, Opt for Diverse Strategies Amid Uncertainty

With President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs looming, U.S. businesses are strategizing ways to protect their operations from the potential economic ripple effects. Trump’s proposal includes a 10% tariff on all imports and a substantial 60% tariff on goods made in China, a significant trading partner for the U.S. There is also a suggested 25% levy on imports from Mexico. If enacted, these measures could elevate consumer prices and provoke retaliatory tariffs from affected countries, leading to a cascade of economic consequences. Economists warn that Trump’s tariff plan, which may be his most impactful economic policy, could drive inflation, disrupt U.S.-China trade, and revert import duty rates to levels not seen since the 1930s.
Businesses Respond by Front-Loading Inventories
Many U.S. businesses are taking proactive steps to mitigate risks. For example, M.A.D. Furniture Design, based in Hong Kong, is accelerating shipments of its Chinese-manufactured furniture to a warehouse in Minneapolis, anticipating a smoother transition if the tariffs come into effect. Similarly, Joe & Bella, an online clothing retailer based in Chicago, has significantly increased orders for popular Chinese-made items, such as shirts and pants, to ensure supplies last through the upcoming Chinese New Year when factory operations pause for several weeks. “We wanted our merchandise delivered before Chinese New Year to avoid potential delays and tariff impacts,” said co-founder Jimmy Zollo.
Front-loading, or preemptively increasing inventory, has been a common strategy among importers to avoid trump’s tariff costs. However, with the breadth of products that could be affected by Trump’s proposed tariffs, experts speculate that U.S. ports might become congested if many companies employ similar tactics. This strategy requires businesses to invest heavily in storage and logistics, a costly endeavor that some, particularly small businesses, may not be able to afford.
Smaller Businesses Weigh Options Amidst Uncertainty
While larger companies with sufficient resources might lean toward front-loading, some small business owners are adopting a cautious approach, prioritizing cash flow over large, preemptive stockpiling. Hilla Hascalovici, CEO of New York-based Periodally, a company that sells Chinese-made heating patches for menstrual relief, has decided against early orders, citing the high costs of storage and expedited shipping as deterrents. Similarly, Max Lemper-Tabatsky of Denver-based Oaktree Memorials, which imports cremation urns from Asia and Europe, has chosen a “wait-and-see” approach rather than committing significant capital based on potential trump’s tariffs that may not materialize.
Freight companies, too, are preparing for the potential changes. Alan Baer, president of OL USA, a freight handling company, anticipates a slowdown in shipments if the tariffs are enacted, potentially leading to reduced demand for his firm’s services. “Tariffs in shipping are challenging no matter the scenario,” Baer remarked, highlighting the potential for workforce reductions if tariffs lead to decreased import volumes.
In light of Trump’s tariff policies during his presidency from 2017 to 2021, many in the business community remain skeptical but cautious, acknowledging that campaign promises do not always result in implemented policies. However, with the possibility of substantial tariffs, U.S. businesses are adopting a mix of preemptive and conservative strategies to navigate the uncertainty ahead.

One of the things really striking me thus far on my s1 rewatch is how much it's implied that Mark and Petey actively tested their boundaries at Lumon.
We have Mark listing off all the ways Helly could try to get out a message to explain why they wouldn't work along with the accompanying punishments (the "bad soap" and some horrific implications around laxatives if they try to swallow a message). His remark about how Milchick can't always be "nice".
Petey mentions that they'd tried resignation requests and had them rejected as part of his explanation that they'd tried all they could on the inside before trying something else. But it does carry the implication that they'd been discussing this stuff together. Especially given how they were "one of the best office friendships" according to Milchick and the whole peteymark -> markhelly parallels that the show itself asks us to consider.
Mark's reaction to Graner, diving in to take the punishment on Helly's behalf because he knew he could handle it. The fact Petey had a recording of Mark in the Breakroom and the mention that Mark had had the most Wellness sessions. Of course, the Wellness sessions likely have other factors behind them (hi Ms Casey) but the first time we see them used is because Lumon is "worried about Irving". Wellness sessions are used as a pre-punishment as a default, which again, implies some level of "acting out" to get there.
Innie Mark is often portrayed as more naïve than his outie. And, sure, he hasn't got the same grief, but he's still jaded in his own way. He comes off as a yes man in early season one, but a lot of that is because he's tried all the options available to him. And losing his main companion in these endeavours was the final straw. He's gone from having someone alongside him to having no one at all. Irving is a rules stickler and Dylan cares more for the perks than trying to escape. Not just that, but Mark now has someone to take under his own wing in the form of Helly.
So, he buckles down, tries to guide her and protect her from the worst of it all, and lets go of his own attempts to escape. Avoids even thinking too hard about them, because he's Mark and that's what he does. But he still lets it slip in his advice to Helly and his later actions in season one show that he hasn't forgotten. He's just buried his head in the sand until someone is there to tell him to stop being an asshole.
It's not that he discovered how to rebel during season one. It's that he learnt to have hope.

Quick question: I'm thinking for Shizun Babies, the most sensible thing would be for the adults in the room to think Shen Qingqiu has the xianxia equivalent of dissociative identity disorder, and the Shen brothers deciding to lean into that assumption. The scene is likely going to be from Shen Jiu's POV, so it's gonna be exclusively called whatever heart demon I'm gonna call it, but it's still gonna be pretty obvious that it is or is close to "Pretending To Have DID To Get Away With Lying About Where You're From", which I imagine might be uncomfy for people, even in a fantasy set up.
What. Uh. What would the content warning be for that, should I decide to go that way? I'd probably give a heads up that it's coming up in the next parr and again on any parts containing the deception, like where I put the word count for the part.

Introducing Project K: The League of Legends Trading Card Game
A FUCKING PHYSICAL CARD GAME?! Wasn’t driving LoR into the dirt not insult enough? Oh this just REEKs “short-lived cashgrab”, especially with the re-used art assets. Which is a shame because as a previous MTG obsessed I should be the perfect target group for it but... I gotta be real my expectations are in the absolute shitter for this one.
Physical TCGs in MTGs tradition are just so predatory in their distribution model and pricing they make GW look like a charity. Also, the cards in this vid looks sorta cheap? Oh I can’t wait for them to flop on that one...

sometimes you're just innocently scrolling along down your dash and you read a post and you're just nodding along like "yep, good post"
and then a singular sentence leaps out and catches your throat in its teeth and your breath draws like a knife
because for fuck's sake, that goddamn tumblr post's single goddamn sentence just slapped the realization out of you that, before you had reckoned with how you had been abused and gaslit through your childhood, you used to pre-apologize for what was done to you when you described it to others, so they didn't get the wrong idea and understood,
"i was a difficult child" and that means it was, of course, at foundation your fault
you just never could make it easy to like you, you see, you were such a handful, such a problem child, so hard to tolerate without caveat, so hard to love because of the conditions you failed to meet
and you used to believe that, for so long you believed that, that you, unlike better children, were like playing parenting on nightmare mode
if only you hadn't been so stubborn if only you had just obeyed and not questioned if only you never argued or talked back if only you weren't such a liar, always such a liar
you believed it all, and because the ones meant to shelter and guard and hold you repeated these things so many times for so many years and with such vehemence... it had to be true
and it might just be the most cruel thing that was done to you

we tabletopped!! and had, if i may be so bold, an excellent time. my very very first time gm-ing/overseeing any of this so my incredibly convoluted rules spreadsheets paid off. my first ingame terrain setup was way, way too intensive and made my players computers belch black smoke, so i've figured out a cute little work around with tiles and imported furniture
Tumblr media
isn't it adorable! easy to chop and change between games too. pictured are the player characters, sharon (the sexiest ghoul in the world), hello nurse (robot, full of contempt) and who can forget. Deez. yes as in that.
my opening screed was pre-written and said out loud with my face, so if you want a scraping more dead man talking/dead woman walking prose, here's some. it's the general outline of how the game started before i winged it for multiple hours
War. War never changes.  In the late twenty-first century, the most powerful men in the world wanted a slice of a dwindling pie; control over the few resources they’d yet to extract and hoard in an increasingly unstable political climate. Food, fuel and water measured in stocks and bonds, gliding from place to place like pieces on a chess board, hand to hand, bank account to bank account, company to company, and then, at the top, nowhere else at all.  What they got was two hundred megatons to the head when somebody finally flipped the board over.  Nuclear hell ensued. The Great War, the greatest to only last two hours. The United States no longer exists. You don’t know how the rest of the world fared, or if there’s any rest of the world left. But that’s ancient history to you. Two-hundred and eleven years, to be exact.  The year is 2288. Living in the wastes of postwar America is a difficult prospect, and you’ve made your way north to Massachusetts to stake your claim in Diamond City, one of the few places on the East Coast that can still, in fact, be called a city. But it’s a long, difficult journey, and friendly company is hard to come by. On your way, you’ve come across travellers with the same idea, and nobody has killed you just yet. At this moment, you’re in Quincy, just south of the Diamond, in a run-down Irish pub. On a good day, you could be there by sundown. You know better than to expect good days. You’re drinking with your new friends when you overhear some talk from the table beside you: Diamond City has a toll for non-traders. As a matter of insurance after some trouble inside. It's a toll none of you can cover.  One hundred caps per head. Upfront. You’re stranded in an Irish pub that wasn’t made any worse by the nukes.  You need money.  And you need it now.
from then on The Gang get contracted by a creepy rich old ghoul. his name is Slim Pickins
