Hey there! Long time no see! Here’s some rough hypothetical Frozen III concept art of Helsa!
Now, I can’t predict what they’ll do for the next two movies, nor am I the best digital artist, but I wanted to try my hand at conceptualizing Hans and Elsa’s visual identities for this next chapter in the franchise.
With Elsa, I decided to evolve her travel outfit from the last movie and color her in some darker blues that don’t wash her out like her white dress. I incorporated some of the rosemaling from her coronation outfit and some Northuldra stylings as well into this coat and dress combo not only to honor her roots, but also to reflect her newfound wildness and freedom as protector of Arendelle and the Enchanted Forest. That even though she has these god-like powers bestowed upon her, she's still grounded and she's still human, with newfound determination in her skills.
Hans, on the other hand, has dropped all of his facades. No longer concerned with keeping up appearances, I decided to make him look more disheveled and intimidating than his younger, cleaned up self. I've always been a proponent of the bearded Hans concept, but here I think it fits as he has no incentive to perform anymore. His only motivation is vengeance, whether at Frohana or a different antagonist, an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation is anyone's guess. He's colored grey and his intentions are grey, no ornamentation, nothing, only the light blue of his shirt hints at any kind of sympathy or redemption.
I also wanted to show that these two share a lot in common, and I've stated this before: Hans and Elsa are two sides of the same coin. Both were isolated during their childhoods, resulting in years of loneliness, misery, and bitterness; both try to appear poised and reserved, hiding their inner self-loathing; both are intelligent and cunning, both have a definite aggressive streak, and both seem to be be on equal footing with interesting chemistry in their very few scenes together.
Here, they are now wild and unrestrained, the main difference being that one of them succumbed to their worst intentions and desires, while the other freed themselves and learned to embrace love and peace in their life.
I'm working on doing concepts for Anna and Kristoff as well, and I'll do Honeymaren and Ryder as well to round out the party, so stay tuned! Digital art takes a long time! Especially when you're still learning how to do it! 🙃😅

I'm actually believing that ElsaMaren was supposed to be explicitly canon in "Frozen 2," but that was scrapped at the last moment. That Honeymaren was made to please #GiveElsaAGirlfriend I don't think I ever doubted, but it seems they went much further than a simple interpretative nod originally.

And I hope this returns in "Frozen 3/4."

Today 11/16/23 Frozen 4 was confirmed to be in production by CEO of the Walt Disney Company Bob Iger on Good Morning America while promoting the World of Frozen in Hong Kong Disneyland.
"Well, I'll give you a little surprise there, Michael. 'Frozen 3' is in the works and there might be a 'Frozen 4' in the works too." "But I don't have much to say about those films right now," Iger continued. "But Jenn Lee, who created 'Frozen,' the original 'Frozen' and 'Frozen II,' is hard at work with her team at Disney Animation on not one but actually two stories."
Frozen 3 was confirmed earlier this year on 2/8/23 by Bob Iger and on 10/5/23 the co-director of Frozen and Frozen 2 and CCO of WDAS, Jennifer Lee, has also talked about the next sequel
“Our philosophy is this, and it won’t change: If there is more story to tell, the filmmakers have to drive it. And I’ll say with ‘Frozen,’ Marc Smith, who was our director of story on ‘Frozen 2,’ came with an incredible idea for more ‘Frozen,’ and it’s worth it.”
It appears that Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 are in production at the same time, hinting to many fans that this may be one story broken into two parts like Marvel has done with the Spider-Verse and Avengers movies.
This will be the first time Walt Disney Animation Studios has ever done a third sequel and the first time they have ever done a fourth sequel as well.

"Frozen 3 is in the works and there might be a Frozen 4 in the works too. (...) Jen Lee is hard at work with her team at Disney Animation, on not one but actually two stories." - Bob Iger, Walt Disney Company CEO on GMA
I'm actually really curious about this. Clearly it wasn't WDAS' plan to make a Frozen 3 AND 4 at once in the beginning. It's during the writing process that they went "Oh, we'll make a 4th movie".
I wonder what it means. Did they have an idea for a final, definitive ending for the saga and thought "Wait, we'll need more than a hour and a half to get to that"? Did they plan a huge plot for Frozen 3, and with time through the screenplay writing they realized they could never make it fit in one movie and will do a sort of "Frozen Final Chapter - Part One and Part Two"? Will Frozen 3 AND 4 be marketed in one and only trailer, with epic, dramatic editing, with 'GET READY' 'FOR THE FINAL CHAPTER OF THE STORY' in big capital letters titles?
We shall see we shall see. I can't wait for the first trailer to drop!

FROZEN 3 and FROZEN 4 are both in development, and I can't wait!
The news sounded odd to me initially, I didn't expect anything like this from Disney Animation, but it became immediatly appealing the moment I realized the GREAT potential a double feature could have for the franchise, most importantly when Bob Iger specified “Jenn Lee, who created Frozen, the original Frozen, and Frozen 2 is hard at work with her team at Disney Animation on not one but actually two stories.”, which would mean:
More time to enstablish new elements, new characters, time to explore new lore and new places without the risk to rush everything;
Tumblr media
A bigger story that can help flesh out our protagonists in their new roles, their new wants and changes they might face, considering how the F2 ending brought many new possibilities;
Tumblr media
A narrative context where the new crysis (whatever it might be) could be explored even better, also allowing to maintain things in a complex prespective just as the Frozen movies like to do, where the matter of "good and evil" not at the center, and things are first of all deeply personal for the characters
Tumblr media
It seems to me that Jennifer Lee always wanted to delve deeper into things, this is why the Broadway Musical was a perfect opportunity for her and the Lopez to expand the characters and flesh out things in the story, also adding new elements that would've been useful for F2.
And when they worked on Frozen 2, they built it as the "second part" of the story, reconnecting almost all the aspects of the sequel to the 1st movie, and the story was clearly meant to be BIGGER and longer compared to what we ended up having because of numerous issues and rewrites. J. Lee and C. Buck didn't want to introduce something that would feel just as "a new adventure", and more about the actual characters evolving, see what they left unresolved, breaking the "Happy ending" scenario of F1, which also led them to NOT give the new human characters (Mattias and the Northuldra) the same relevance given to Spirits of Nature, in order to remain focused on Elsa, Anna and the rest of the gang.
Tumblr media
Now, Lee will most likely not direct or write these two new movies, but she is still directly involved, because it's both part of her job as CCO of Walt Disney Animation Studio and because Frozen is her (and Chris Buck) baby. It will be curious to discover with what idea Marc Smith came out with, but the fact he worked on the 1st Frozen as a storyboard artist and the became Director of Story for Frozen 2 says a lot about him and why Lee trusts him so much, and I'm sure they will follow the approach used with the 2nd movie and carry it on with 3 and 4. Numerous sagas used the two-parter approach, like the books adaptations of Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games series, or more "original cases" like Pirates of the Carribeans or what we are getting now with the animated Spiderverse movies (Across and Beyond). But I think the best similarity (and probably what led to this ambitious choice) is with Avengers Infinity War/Endgame, where the BIG FINALE gets developed in two movies.

Frozen 3 - What We Know So Far - 2023
Tumblr media
(NOTE: Image above is not concept art for F3. It is from F2.)
I wanted to do an overview post of everything we've learned this year about F3. I want to keep track of all news related to this project so that we can avoid misunderstandings and fan theories overrunning the films' development, like with what happened with F1 and F2.
To note, from now on I'm pretty much combining F3 and F4 (or F3 part 2) as a single project until we learn more about them. They are pretty much confirmed to be the same story anyway, so it makes sense to just put them together. Thus, if you want to know about F4 on my blog, it will be under the #frozen 3 news tag that I feature on my page.
I want to give shout outs to @ericmicael, @frozen-snowflakesandsunflowers, @frozensnetwork, and @bigfrozenfan for actually being the ones to provide some the sources below. I don't want to take all the credit for finding this info.
If any more info drops in December, or I discover more news released in 2023 in general, I will update this post.
Overview of What We Know
The idea of Frozen 3 came from Marc Smith, the Story Director of Frozen 2, and the story is so large that it will be separated into two films. There is no official release date, or info regarding how the two films will be released.
Jennifer Lee is overseeing the project and keeping up with it, but is not writing or directing as of 2023. This may change later on, however as of now, Lee is not behind the creative process.
It is currently unknown if Chris Buck will return as director, and there is no news on who is directing or writing the films, other than Marc Smith coming up with the initial idea.
Idina Menzel and Josh Gad have officially announced their involvement. However, Kristen Bell and Jonathan Groff have not officially announced their returns. It is sort of obvious that they will return, especially with Bell saying that they are all ready to return, but just wanted to establish that they have not publicly stated this yet since the announcement. As for other cast members, no one has stated yet that they will return as of 2023.
Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez are returning to write the songs, and have also confirmed that the story will be two films.
Jennifer Lee continued to push that no other entry other than the main films are canon to the newest project. Thus, the Frozen Podcast that was announced alongside F3 and misrepresented as a lead up to F3, is not considered canon.
There is very little known about the story, however, it may be about Elsa and Anna being very busy in their new roles. There is also some hints about Elsa's powers possibly growing.
More detailed news with sources below the read more.
---
As a quick shout out, in the year 2022, Kristen Bell had actually hinted at Frozen 3. At the time, this was considered a joke since Kristen Bell loves to push for more Frozen sequels (and honestly, it probably still is a very coincidental joke haha), however now that we know that F3 was possibly in development at this time, this may of been the first official hint at F3 that we ever received.
youtube
"I would like to officially announce, with zero authority, Frozen 3. I know Idina recently said she would do it. And I feel like if we're all in, what are we waiting for?" -- Kristen Bell, Voice of Anna
---
The first bit of information we received about F3 in 2023 was the announcement itself. In early February, Frozen 3 was announced to be in development along side Toy Story 5 and Zootopia 2.
“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia. We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.” -- Bob Iger, Disney CEO
---
At the same time, Kristen Anderson-Lopez further confirmed this, indirectly announcing that the Lopezes would return to write the songs for the new film.
Tumblr media
---
On the same day, Josh Gad confirmed (inserting link in case video doesn't load) that he was ready to return to the film.
Tumblr media
---
In June, we received new information about the film in regards to Jennifer Lee's involvement. As of 2023, Jennifer Lee is only overseeing the project, but not writing or directing it. In this announcement, (which is actually bit misleading since, as said, Jennifer Lee is still returning to the project, just not fully as writer/director) Lee hinted that someone else came up with the idea of Frozen 3, and it had become their project. This led to many fans assuming that this new person was the new director/writer.
“I can’t say where we are. All our stories are driven by the artists in the studio. Where we’re going with Frozen did not come from me, it came from an incredible person. That’s a new piece, I’ve told no one. And I’ve been blown away by it and I’m just having a blast with that team.” -- Jennifer Lee, Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer
---
In the same month, Idina Menzel confirmed her return as Elsa. However, she stated that she didn't know too much about the project itself and said that they only teased her about it.
“I don’t know a lot. To be completely honest, they teased it to us, and I have no idea. They don’t show you a script. They don’t show you anything. All I know is, yeah we are gonna make one, and that’s it. So, I’m like, ‘Cool! I will be able to pay my bills." --Idina Menzel, Voice of Elsa
---
A Month later, Idina continued to drop small tidbits of what she knows (barely anything apparently haha) about F3 in another interview with This Morning.
youtube
"Yes...it's happening I was told, I mean you know nothing's been signed but I'm very excited if it is happening- I swear to you I'm not being elusive...I haven't seen a script." --Idina Menzel, Voice of Elsa
---
Later in October, we got more info about the film's creative team and how involved Jennifer Lee actually is on the project. Lee announced that the incredible person who came up with the idea of F3 was Marc Smith, Director of story for F2. She also stated that she was blown away by the progress on the project.
“Every morning last week they carved out space for me to work with the creative team on it, and I am blown away and I am so excited. I don’t know what I’m doing on it yet — I’m not doing nothing — except doing what I do now, which is we work on every project as as team and I’m in there with creative. But with ‘Frozen,’ just a little bit more. Our philosophy is this, and it won’t change: If there is more story to tell, the filmmakers have to drive it. And I’ll say with ‘Frozen,’ Marc Smith, who was our director of story on ‘Frozen 2,’ came with an incredible idea for more ‘Frozen,’ and it’s worth it." -- Jennifer Lee, Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer
---
Jennifer Lee later confirmed this information again in another interview within the same month, and also pushed that the Frozen Podcast: Forces of Nature, is not canon the the newest project.
The idea for Frozen 3, she continues, came from Marc Smith, head of story on Frozen II. “Growing it out from there feels right because it’s coming with vision, it’s coming with purpose." Lee can't say much about what the sequel entails, but when asked if fans should be paying close attention to the current Frozen story being told on the Forces of Nature podcast series, she's hesitant to consider the audio offering canon. In my head, the films will always stay canon. Anything done outside of that, we give them permission to have their own identity. They may not be canon. I still encourage it because I think it’s fun to explore. But don’t hold us to anything except what we put in those features. That’s just me. I don’t want to disappoint anyone. But I also want to say I love that other artists get inspired, and I love the idea of the Frozen story.” -- Jennifer Lee, Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer
---
The biggest shock that shook the entire fandom and internet culture, was when Bob Iger dropped the reveal that a Frozen 4 was also in the works at the studio in November.
youtube
‘Frozen 3’ is in the works, and there might be a ‘Frozen 4’ in the works too. But I don’t have much to say about those films right now. Jenn Lee, who created the original ‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen 2,’ is hard at work with her team at Disney animation on not one but actually two stories.” -- Bob Iger, Disney CEO
---
Along side the above announcement, Kristen Anderson-Lopez also confirmed the fourth film.
Tumblr media
---
Later on in the same month, Jennifer Lee gave more back ground on the idea of two films, and indirectly confirmed that the films would be one story told across two installments.
"We're really excited about where they're going, and we just have a lot of story to tell with that direction we're going in. So, I think, in my head, there may be enough for two in that story. But I'm really, really loving working with the team and where they're going." --Jennifer Lee, Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer
---
In November as well, This tweet (linking here just in case the video below doesn't work) started to pick up steam and was posted by a verified account - however, it is still iffy on whether or not this info was for F3 or was just taken from an interview about F2 and repurposed to be about F3. If it is genuine, then Jennifer Lee hints here that the story will possibly involve Elsa's powers growing.
Tumblr media
"I will tell you what I think philosophically, that isn't telling you what is in [Frozen 3]. I think Anna and Elsa's journey is only continuing. It was warned by the Trolls that that Elsa's powers would only grow. So, that's all I will say." --Jennifer Lee, Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer
---
In December, Jennifer Lee did another interview with Heart where she actually revealed a tiny bit more about Frozen 3's story. She goes on to say that Elsa and Anna will be very busy in the next project.
youtube
“Well they are coming back. Big Iger himself leaked it, that we got so much story that we’re working on now, it looks like it’s gonna be two films. Cause it’s so big where they’re going next. And Elsa’s got a lot to do, so, and I can’t give anything away to say what’s gonna happen but Anna as well. And Anna’s you know, I feel very connected to her, the ordinary hero, I don’t have any magic. But I’m really excited. The amazing thing to me is always how these two sisters as we start looking at their journey, they keep surprising us and telling us, showing us what they’re capable of. So I’m definitely excited about where we’re going.” So does Elsa find love? “I can’t give anything away, I can’t tell you anything. All I want to say is that anyone who thinks they’ve heard anything they are not true, there’s no leak, nothing has left our vaulted story room and the only leak is what Bob Iger leaked himself.” --Jennifer Lee, Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer

And we’re back folks! With another batch of rough fan art featuring Queen Anna and powerless Elsa this time.
For this design for Anna, I noticed another post that some people didn’t feel that her regal gown from the epilogue in Frozen 2 really fit her style, so I tried to emulate the colors and rosemaling from her coronation dress in the first movie, while also keeping a sense of maturity in this look having grown into this role. She’s not as impulsive or fiesty anymore, now tempered with responsibilities but still conveys her warmth and compassion as a competent ruler. Still, in comparison with her sister, she is not without her insecurities, as running a country doesn’t come without a fair amount of stress, which she hides from Elsa out of fear of not being good enough.
Now as for Elsa losing her powers, I’m sure a lot of people have hypothesized about if she had an adversesary that could wield fire powers. I have made concept art of that before in the past, but I want to try and draw that digitally first before I show you guys. In this instance, I would imagine that Elsa has faced off against this adversary, and lost, and that enemy has weakened her powers to a state where she is unable to manipulate snow and ice and thus it dramatically alters her appearance. Her hair turns brown, like her mother’s, the clothes that she fashioned for herself would lose their icy appearance and revert to normal civilian clothes (or at worst, disappear, making for an awkward scenario), and the loss makes her weak and sick. She would have to learn how to rehabilitate herself for the next round in the story, but this change would almost certainly traumatize her since she’s just learned how to accept herself and her powers.
Lastly, with my idea for Hans to return in this story, I can’t imagine that Anna would be all that enthusiastic about seeing him again. My idea is that he has some insider information about the adversary that they’re facing in the story, whether it be the Southern Isles, or this fire wielding villain that Elsa loses against, they somehow have to rely on him for assistance. His motivations could be entirely selfish, “merely an enemy of my enemy is my friend situation” and he only agrees to help to stick it to this adversary (probably the Southern Isles). Nonetheless, it would make for some interesting dialogue and dynamics to see how they would react to each other.
Now, like I said, this is all hypothetical. This is more fanfiction and fanart than anything else, you don’t have to agree with it, but this is just a fun exercise in thinking what could happen in the next two movies. I hope you enjoy what I’ve done. Kristoff is coming up next!

One disappointment I really don't want to have with "Frozen 3" and "Frozen 4": so long after "Frozen 2" the Northuldras are ignored again.
Tumblr media
To this day, the only one they are developing remains a mobile game, "Disney Magic Kingdoms". Even the "Frozen Podcast", which has a large part of its plot taking place in the Enchanted Forest, ignores them and only remembers the tribe in a mention by Kristoff. And in the anthology the story related to them is something from the past that only serves to give Agduna more justification.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honeymaren and Ryder have so much potential, their connections with Elsa and Kristoff, and I'm not talking about romance although if we consider the mobile game, it's canon to say that the woman is in love with the Snow Queen and her brother supports the shipp after realizing that Elsa wasn't interest in him. And Yelana, although she is by far the least prominent character of the trio, she met Iduna, are they going to continue ignoring that?
If the franchise really needs support from the Sámi tribe to make content with the Northuldra tribe, I hope Disney will be kind to them.
I want "Frozen 3" and "Frozen 4" to explore new characters and new themes, but it doesn't need to ignore its past (it could even bring the idiot prince back to be beaten by someone else, I don't care) and especially the past that It hasn't even been addressed yet.

“Frozen 3's story will be amazing”
Tumblr media
In an exclusive interview with The Direct, Frozen/ 2 yesterday, Dec 26 2023, producer Peter De Vecho has told us that the story that they're working on is going to be ”amazing”.
Peter has said:
“Look, we only do sequels if we believe there's enough story to tell. They're working on it, up in development, I'm focused on 'Wish'. But it is exciting what they're working on. I will say anything that you read about it in the public, we haven't said anything about it. So it's all conjecture, but I trust that it's going to be amazing."
Let's breakdown what all this means:
Given Peter De Vecho said he's currently working on Wish, I believe this interview was taken before Wish aired in Cinemas or during its production. So now that Wish is in Cinemas, Peter should be focused on Frozen 3.
This time instead of Jennifer Lee giving the subtle updates on Frozen 3 (and 4), now we have Peter De Vecho joining in, confirming his return as the producer of the films. So slowly as the production of Frozen 3 develops more people from the crew and cast will be giving us more updates on the film.
But as far as the reason for making Frozen 3 and 4 goes, and people saying it's just to make money, I don't believe that's the only reason. Yes I believe they are making money but that's what films do - make money. And with how Disney films are going now, not doing so well, they have to do all they can to climb back up and give us the Disney we know and love. But they are also making more movies for the story. I can't say this for other franchises but with Frozen's history, I believe it's for the story too. Frozen 2 was made because after Frozen we all were theorising and begging to know how Elsa got her powers in the first place learning that she was born with them. Frozen 2 gave us that answer and expanded the background of that a little more including more magical/ mythical beings. Yes I know it's a controversial movie mostly for its ending of the sisters separation. But after a few re-watches and reads of posts I understand the need for it then. But I still want the sisters to reunite permanently this time as do many, so perhaps the story finds a way of doing this. But we also wonder what this fifth spirit role means, what other things can Elsa do now, how Anna handles life as queen, etc.
Jennifer Lee has also said recently that Elsa won't have a LGBT love interest because she's not focusing too much on what the fans want but rather more on what the story tells, what is needed for Elsa, for the characters right now in this new situation they've been put under. And because the story being developed is big, it's going to split into two parts. So yeah it's for the story too.
So about Frozen 3, we have heard it's going to be mind blowing, “big” and “epic” from Jennifer Lee and “exciting” and “amazing” from Peter De Vecho. I don't think the first two movies have been hyped about as much as Frozen 3 has been so far. The best thing is we don't know what to expect. We don't know anything and nothing has been confirmed yet so anything can happen. Most of the two part movies have been doing well so yes I do have hope for Frozen 3 and 4.
Frozen 3 is expected to release in November 2025 if it follows the same year gap and released dates as the previous.

HAPPY 10TH ANNIVERSARY TO ALL FROZEN FANS!!! 🌻❄️❤️🥳🎂🍰🎆
Tumblr media
I struggle to believe it's really been 10 years (though for me it's only been 9). This franchise has truly turned my life around and I wouldn't be the person I am today without it. Anna and Elsa were and are the light of my life and I can barely wait to see where their story goes next!
I feared we'd never see the sisters again on the big screen after F2 so the announcement of the continuation of the Frozen saga this year truly came as a gift after more than a year without any new Frozen content.
Here's to another 10 years!
