Hi! I made them with:

Poster board

EVA foam

1in thick elastic

Paint that's good for foam

Marker

Gorilla glue

Hot Glue

Box cutter

Dremel

I drew a templet on paper first then traced that onto the foam and poster board. Next, I cut out all the pieces with a box cutter and glued them together with gorilla glue. After the glue set, I used a dremel to clean up the edges of the foam and make it nice. Then I painted everything, drew on details with a marker, and finally, hot glued a piece of elastic to the back of the masks.

Notes: EVA foam is expensive, and I don't think it's necessary for this project. I only used it because I had extra sitting in my closet. I'm sure you can make a beautiful mask with just poster board, cardboard, styrofoam, whatever. But if you do use EVA foam and want the paint to turn out the best, spray the foam with primer before you paint. Then after the piece is painted, spray it with sealer. (Look up how to seal foam properly for more details.) I didn't do this because I was short on time and these masks were only meant for one night of cosplay. Also, a dremel is not a tool everyone has just casually laying around, so ignore that step if you have to. And lastly, the main drawbacks of these masks are that you can't see out of them, and they can get uncomfortable. They're extremely simple in design and functionality, but they're great if you only plan on putting them on for a few minutes at a time for pictures or meetups.

The Crystal Gems, but more alien! 

The Crystal Gems look a tad too human for me. Like, from an artist’s standpoint (in my brain anyways) I’m thinking: “These are extraterrestrials who are the physical projections of light emitting from space rocks. Do something more interesting and creative w/ that god damn it! Make your show have more personality/character/distinction from other shows!” Idk, whatever. In the original 2013 pilot, to my understanding, the gems were originally from another dimension. If that had been the case, I could’ve let their humanoid appearance slip, but for me, I feel they could’ve gone for a more extraterrestrial physique or something. Ex. the martians from War of the Worlds. That book was far ahead of it’s time, especially w/ the depictions of the aliens. Intelligent life evolving differently from us, but vastly superior in technology and intellect; but of course, the scientists/general public in those days pretty much said: “No, no, no, only us humans are intelligent. Therefore, intelligent life will look like us”. So in the sequel, new aliens had a more human look, which became what we know today as “Grey Aliens”. Large head, grey skin, big black eyes, abnormally thin figure, etc. A mindset that is still very prominent in modern media/fiction. *sigh* I’m just pretty much venting out my creative frustration w/ modern media at this point, but I digress, let’s just continue on. What I’m trying to say is, the show could’ve done more. My opinion of the show in general is “meh”. If you find enjoyment from it, that’s fine. If you don’t, that’s also fine. As for me, personally I don’t outright hate it, nor outright love it. I’m more of a casual fan, and even then I don’t really watch it that much or often. Why I’m doing this is because I’m somewhat a perfectionist in a weird sense. Only for art rather than mundane stuff like organization and all that. If I see something that catches my eye, I’ll 1). analyze it, 2). process it, and 3). See what I would do w/ it and how I’d handle it. Give it my own personal touch/flare. From Left-to-right: Amethyst: Since her class of gem are warriors, I figured I’d go w/ rock golems for inspiration. Out of the three gems, Amethyst is more into human activities and the most social w/ the humans. That’s why she is wearing (poorly fitted) clothing and a wig to appear more like a human. In my mind, it’d make sense for her to wear them and seem more human, so to speak. Garnet: For Garnet, I kinda had no clue what I was gonna do, and the whole thing was improvised and not thought up before drawing it. After drawing the top half, I had to figure out what to do w/ the lower half. Several tries later, I found a solution to the problem. Her limbs are hovering close to each other, like magnets. And to clue in Sapphire’s ability to levitate. Ruby & Sapphire: Next up, Sapphire & Ruby. For Sapphire I added her hovering/levitation abilities into her design and her single eye. Had som trouble w/ figuring out her hair as to not look too “earthy”, but I found a solution to that. Ruby was inspired by rock golems, much like Amethyst was, but I gave them a more robust and blocky build compared to the amethysts/jaspers. Pearl: Pearl was the first one I drew (and acted as a templet for the others). I kept her slim and petite figure/build and her ballerina inspired appearance from the show. Her fingers function like the ones from Peridot’s limb enhancers. In stationary mode, they form a stacked formation. She hovers a few feet off the ground. For their voices, I’d say it’d have some reverb to it similarly to Pearl’s holo-pearls. This could’ve also been used as a good message, like to other humans the gems are freaky lookin’, but to Steven, who grew up w/ them, are seen as family nonetheless. But oh well, what we got is what we got. One more thing, Steven is still the same, design wise. Peridot: For Peridot, I took inspiration from the mythical centaurs and fauns for her alien design. She was fairly easy to figure a new design for out of the rest of them. Her lower half (in her centaur form) has the ability to spiral ‘round w/ her legs acting as a propeller. 3)

Lapis Lazuli: Lapis’s design was inspired by various insects: water bugs, dragon flies, various nymphs and the praying mantis. While designing her, I sketched out the general shapes of her hair and head and went through various different versions before finally settling on a design. Her bangs are modelled as mandibles. Originally, her body was going to resemble an upside down tear drop + a backswimmer. I later scraped that idea and went w/ the more mantis-like design. It ended up looking like Mothra from G:KOTM. 4) 

Rose Quartz: Rose I modeled to resemble a futuristic friendly robot. Something you could see being a doctor/nurse/be in that profession. I kept in mind that I needed to make her human enough that someone (aka Greg) would become smitten with her. Bismuth: I took machinery (and the Predator, for reasons that should be obvious) as inspiration for her more alien design. Her “hands” can shapeshift into what ever tool she needs to craft her weapons/tools. 5) 

Jasper: Jasper is the “perfect” representation of what Amethyst is: a soldier. Her body shape is more built up and finalized and has more “muscle” to it. Her hair acts like a carapace. Not entire solid, shifting w/ her movement, but is very durable. Jasper is like a polished, prettied up, and trimmed piece of jewelry you’d find in an expensive clothes store. While Amethyst is like an untrimmed (but still eye catching) lump of rock embedded in the side of an exposed area of a cliff ridge you found on a hike. ————— Artist’s Note: Another thing I’d like to add to my statement in the previous entry, is that there also needs to be a human element to the mix. A human-like being to compliment a non-human-like being. A few examples being: Lilo and Stitch, R2-D2 and C-3PO, Herbie the Love Bug and his many owners, Hiccup and Toothless. In this case, it’d be Steven w/ the Crystal Gems. You need that human element to act as a window and translator for the audience. Even most wildlife documentaries use this. The narrator/and or host is usually present; either physically or through voice over, otherwise you’re just watching animal footage. Again, not sure if any of you can understand what I’m getting at, so apologies in advance.
