Part 2: The Real You
Tumblr media
Peter was swinging through the streets of Queens for a few minutes already. He did this every evening after school, saving the civilians of the city from everyday crime. For him it was also a way of relaxing. Feeling the cold wind breezing against his suit was surprisingly satisfying after hours spent in mundane classrooms. Nobody knows of his superhero alter ego, except from Tony Stark and Happy, and he rather keeps it that way. Nobody can bother him with questions or unwanted attention.
The sun started to set and shadows lingered around. Lost in thought Peter didn’t even realize he had travelled into a totally different neighborhood. Here, instead of apartment buildings, there were cosy houses surrounding the concrete roads. He slowed down and landed onto one of the many roofs, tucked away behind a few trees, and sat down to rest for a bit. He noticed he had never been in this part of queens before and started taking everything in. It looked like a pleasant and soothing place to live, very peaceful, the only sounds that broke the silence were those coming from the kids playing in their gardens and the occasional cars driving by. Peter’s gaze turned towards the house opposite him. In the room above the garage was a light turned on. He clearly saw two girls sitting on a mattress, discussing an obviously interesting subject as their arms swung around in excitement. One of them was sitting with her back towards the window, the other faced it. They both erupted into a fit of laughter, not stopping when an older woman entered the room. “Probably the mother”, Peter thought to himself. The girl who had faced the window this whole time, now stood up and gave her friend a tight hug before grabbing her schoolbag from the ground and leaving. When the front door opened he quickly made sure he couldn’t be spotted, hiding behind big branches hanging from  the trees beside him.
The young lady who was leaving the house screamed up towards the closed window. “Hey, (Y/N)!” The teenager up in her bedroom slid the window open to see her friend standing underneath it. Peter immediately observed the face that had been hidden from him these past few minutes. Her hair was a beautiful shade of (y/h/c), the locks falling in front of her gorgeous features as she faced her friend down in the yard. The way she answered her companion with that witty tone, “What now, Madeline!”, and the soft smirk that followed right after made Peter chuckle. He swiftly put his hand in front of his mouth to cover the quiet sounds even though the mask already did most of the job for him. “Don’t call me that! It’s Maddy for you!” the other answered with an evident laugh, “I just wanted to say I love you!” “Oh, just shut up already!” (Y/N) joked whilst leaning against the windowsill with her forearms. “See you Monday at English.” “Bye, Madison!” “Shut up” Maddy sighed in annoyance and rolled her eyes. She left when the window was completely closed again.
Peter took off towards his apartment as soon as nobody was in sight. He felt like going to that neighborhood more often, those two really were a dynamic pair. But especially (Y/N), the girl with the witty remarks and the contagious smile, was someone he wanted to see more of.

Every evening he went back to that one particular street. Peter told himself the reason behind this was just the peaceful atmosphere the place brought into the end of his stressful days.
Those were only lies though. As time progressed he got to know (Y/N) in ways he didn’t perceive as possible. He looked at her from afar. Hiding in a tree, on a roof, behind a chimney,…
She wrote a lot. Inside a diary or on a single sheet of paper, typing on her laptop or her phone. It seemed to be a daily occupation. Peter could only imagine what kind of things she wrote about. Still, without having read a single word of her works he knew it had to be beautiful. The way her nose wrinkled in concentration and her tongue slid over her bottom lip, he couldn’t force his eyes to look away from her appearance. Listening to music was also something she did on a daily basis, dancing around her room and loudly singing along with the lyrics. The boy couldn’t help the smile whenever he heard her serene voice. He once saw her watching a YouTube video on her laptop of none other than the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. She looked at the screen in astonishment as the man in a red and blue suit stopped a bus full of people from crashing into a car. Her jaw dropped at the sight. That day, Peter left with the happiest mood he had been in for a while. Not even Flash could take that amazing feeling away from him the next morning.

One day, many of her family members came to visit. The sun had already set, the only light came from the little fire they had made in the garden.  Peter sat himself on a thick branch from the neighbor’s tree and listened to the conversation with her cousins.
She was very capable of handling the little kids whilst joking around with the ones of her age. “So (Y/N),” the cousin on the left started to ask, “got your eyes on anyone yet?” The younger children giggled and the teenagers listened attentively. Peter caught himself twiddling with his fingers as, he too, anticipated her answer. “No, not really. The people in my school aren’t that interesting.” He exhaled all the air he had been holding and let his shoulders fall in relief. The girl was out of his reach, he knew that, she had to be one of the most popular students at her school. But the hope that he could one day introduce himself to her, as Peter Parker, and maybe could have a chance at winning her attention was something he held onto. Only being an acquaintance of (Y/N) would already make him the happiest person on earth. “Really? I thought you had a massive crush on the spider-dude from YouTube?” a guy who was sat on the grass in front of her asked. Peter’s ears perked and his eyes went wide. “I’m just fascinated, okay? I don’t even know how old he is!” she exclaimed with an eye roll. “Yeah”, another cousin spoke up, “for all we know the guy could be fifty years old.” The whole group started laughing until a girl who was about seventeen said: “He doesn’t look that old, have you seen the way his body was build? I think the gods sculpted him themselves.” Another wave of laughter took over the garden. But the teenage boy up in the tree could swear he saw (Y/N) staring into the fire with a dreamy look in her dazzling eyes.

The daily visits didn’t stop. It had been three weeks now since his first accidental visitation at her address. He started taking his backpack with him so he could stay at the girl’s house longer and thanked whatever force was up there whenever May had to work a late shift.
Three days ago he had lost track of time and only took off when it was 11PM. Of course auntie May was worried sick and pacing through the living room when he finally entered the apartment. He had told her he fell asleep at Ned’s place and there was nothing to worry about.
Sometimes it felt wrong, watching a girl that didn’t know him every day until it was late in the evening. But it felt so right at the same time. After all, he was there if she would get into any trouble, he could save her if it was needed, he could be the hero she watched every day on YouTube, the hero she admired so very much. She thought of him as a hero. It made him bubbly and excited every time he recalled the memory of her calling him one.
“Mom! Mom! You have to see this video!” “Calm down, honey”, her mother had chuckled at her buzzing nature, “What’s the video about?” “It’s Spider-Man, mom! He’s amazing! Honestly, he’s the hero of Queens!” “Why haven’t I seen him before then?” (Y/N)’s face saddened slightly at this, disappointment threatening to take over her contagious smile. “I don’t know, he’s probably too busy saving all the people in the city. Our neighborhood isn’t that dangerous after all.”
Only if she knew how many times Spider-Man had stood on top of her roof or sat in the trees  scattered around her house.

Hours changed into days, days turned into weeks and weeks shifted into a whole month. 31 sunsets in a row had Peter spent watching the girl in house number 20.
May gathered that something was up, she didn’t bother to ask any questions about it though. She knew her nephew would talk to her if he felt ready. Until that moment she would wait patiently every evening until he walked through the apartment’s door.
Peter sat on a tree right next to (Y/N)’s house. If he stretched his leg, he would be able to touch the brown roof tiles with his toes. Last time he checked, the girl was sitting at her desk, writing another story in her second diary of the month. She had bought a new one because all the pages of the last, were occupied by previous writings and poems. He knew the girl wrote poems as well as she had read a few of them aloud on a sunny evening last week. The words flowed together into well fitted sentences and paragraphs. Her voice so delicate, the sound of the wind could break its calming tone. The meaning so powerful, it took Peter’s breath away the second she started pronouncing the first syllable. The love-struck teenage boy learned new things about (Y/N) every day, he thought she was unique in every single aspect of her life. He looked up towards the sky, took deep inhales and exhaled just as forcefully. This girl had enchanted him with her flawless ways. Intentions so pure, hopes so innocent and composure so sane, the schoolgirl sitting in the bedroom beneath him had taken over every thought in his restless mind.
A sudden sound came from the roof window, a hand reaching through the little opening. Peter immediately reacted and took the strap of his backpack, lying next to him in the tree, to put it over his shoulder. However, the second strap was twisted around a branch and only tightened more around it with every pull. When the boy attempted to pull at the bag for a final time, the branch breaks and he gets swung onto the roof with great force. He, not so gracefully, lands onto the tiles and bumps into the chimney with a loud thud. He hears the familiar sound of a girl’s voice, gasping for air. His head snaps towards the noise.
And indeed, only about eight feet away from him stands (Y/N), eyes wide and hands in front of her parted lips. Both teenagers stay standing like statues at the sight of each other, like their feet were glued to the roof with super glue.
“Spider-Man?” the girl eventually managed to whisper into her cupped hands. This shook Peter out of his trance. He tightened his grip on the backpack and aimed his free left arm at a street light to web himself away. “No, wait!” he heard her exclaim. Her arm was stretched out towards him, making it impossible for him to leave her in such a hurry. “Please don’t go.” The soft and tender words made Peter instantly relax. On the other hand, the panic that hung around the sentence was also very evident. He lowered his arm and collected all the confidence he could find.
“Hi, I’m Pe- uh Spider-Man!” He couldn’t be more glad the mask was pulled over his head, the cringing features on his face pulling together in embarrassment. “Yeah, I knew that already”, she chuckled and looked at her shuffling feet. “Of course you did, how stupid of m-me. I’m sorry! What are you doing here?” She looks at him with a confused expression. “Uhm, I live here…” Smooth one Pete, he thought to himself. “On the roof, I mean. What are you doing on the roof?” Her cheeks turned into a darker shade, a shy grin tugging at her soft looking lips. “I come here whenever I’m bored or stressed out to lie down and loosen up a little.” The boy instantly went back over his memories of the past month, not once had he seen her standing on top of the roof. “It’s been a while since the last time I went up here though”, she explained when Spider-Man didn’t react to her last statement, “When I decided to climb through the window today, I didn’t expect to run into a superhero on top of my house.” She looked up to the white spider eyes on his mask before whispering under her breath, “But it’s a wonderful surprise.”
His heartbeat quickened and got more intense, almost to the point where he could swear every beat was visible through his suit. He stretched his right arm over his head, rubbing at his clothed neck. It didn’t matter he was standing in front of her with his suit on, all the confidence it normally offered him melted away at her captivating presence. “My name is (Y/N), (Y/N) (Y/L/N). Not that it matters or anything, I just thought it wou-” “That’s a beautiful name!” Peter interrupted her with a crack in his voice, now blushing as well. “Thanks.” The slight smile on her face grew into a beaming one and he knew it was the most ravishing smile he had ever seen, especially because he was the cause of it. They stayed like that, staring at each other for a short while. (Y/N)’s eyes went down his body, inspecting the skintight blue and red suit, remembering and recognizing it from all the videos online. Peter couldn’t bring himself to look at anything else but her stunning face, finally being able to see it from up close. The wrinkles at her nose from laughing, the glisten in her (y/e/c) orbs, even the light blue circles underneath her sleep deprived eyes were enticing.
“Am I allowed to know your real name? Or does that have to stay a secret?” she finally asked, snapping Peter out of his trance again. The innocence of the question seeping through his consciousness, making a shiver go down his spine. And for some unknown reason he couldn’t keep that information from her. For some reason he just felt like telling her his name. Only his first name, though, for the time being. “It’s Pe-Peter…  but don’t tell anyone. From n-now on this is our secret, ‘kay?” Without noticing they both took a few steps towards one another, closing the space between them to only a mere two feet. He held out his pinky to make her promise she wouldn’t reveal his identity to anyone. The childish gesture made her laugh but she hooked her little finger around his nonetheless. Peter could feel his hand getting clammy as her little touch set him on fire and just the same feeling spread throughout her body as well.
The sound of Peter’s phone broke the adorable interaction between them. He quickly took his phone from his schoolbag and unlocked it, seeing a text from May.
Ned is here for movie night! With Pizza! Get over here before it’s cold <3
“I’m sorry, I have to go,” he told her, “my friend’s waiting for me.” He looked up just in time to see her face fall in disappointment after putting his phone back. “I’m sorry, (Y/N).” Walking towards the edge of the roof he shoots out a web that attaches itself to the street light from before. “I’ll see you again, right Peter?” The hope laced in her voice made his heart melt like snow for the sun. “What about tomorrow?” he asks her. He mentally gives himself a pat on the back for finally being able to say something without stuttering or a voice crack in the middle of his sentence. “Tomorrow,” she nods in confirmation, “I’m counting on it.”
With one last look in her direction he swings away, the cold air cooling him down quite a bit. He had finally been able to talk with the girl from house number 20, and he wasn’t complaining in the slightest. He silently thanked his backpack for getting stuck on that branch after all.
