Timeless, Hollywoodland, and The Philadelphia Story

I found this old meta I’ve had in my Google docs for years but I don’t believe I’ve ever posted anything about it, since I originally intended to use the idea in a fic. Since that isn’t happening, even though it’s been years and I doubt anyone is out here writing or reading Timeless meta anymore, here you go. Obviously spoilers for both.

Most Garcy fans will groan if I suggest we take a look at Hollywoodland, but considering a certain admittedly fantastic dress:

…and a certain cut scene involving a pool, it’s interesting to consider through the lens of The Philadelphia Story, of which the dress and pool scene are iconic elements. Here is a still from the movie:

The Philadelphia Story revolves around Tracy Lord (Katherine Hepburn), a wealthy socialite who is preparing to marry her fiance, George (who matters as little as Lucy’s quirk-of-the-timeline-fiancé Noah in Timeless but manages to be far less likable) in a matter of days. The head of Spy Magazine assigns Macaulay Connor (Jimmy Stewart, oddly nicknamed “Mike”) and his photographer, Liz, to go to the wedding and get the story posing as friends of her expatriate brother, with an actual friend of his as their in: C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant). Dexter also happens to be Tracy’s first husband. They divorced years prior due to his alcoholism—including a nasty incident of him shoving her down—and her criticism of him. Dexter originally seems to be doing this out of spite, but we quickly learn it’s actually to keep the magazine from releasing a bigger scoop about Tracy’s father’s affair and estrangement from her mother, which have devastated Tracy. The rest of the film is about Tracy’s entanglement with all these men.

(Sidenote: there are some very old-fashioned diatribes and comments about the nature of women and marriage and the shoving I found very hard to overlook, but that’s not the point of this post. Just heads up if you do ever watch it.)

On the eve of Tracy’s wedding to George, she dons The Dress to attend a ball in their honor. She gets drunk for only the second time in her life, and she and a similarly drunk Mike spend time together. They mainly talk drunk nonsense, drive drunk, and Mike sings Over the Rainbow. They have a grand time, end up kissing, and jump in the pool for a midnight swim.

Similarly, in Hollywoodland, Lucy and Wyatt share a sweet poolside conversation while she wears The Dress to a Hedy Lamarr party, they kiss, and they would have jumped in the pool if not for wildfire filming issues. They spend the night together, scar Rufus the next morning, then head back to the present. Wyatt soon receives a text from his supposedly dead wife. He takes off, without telling anyone why, and Wyatt spends the rest of the season trying to win back Jessica permanently while still having feelings for Lucy. In the “movie” (reminder: Christmas isn’t canon), Jessica is a pure evil Rittenhouse operative who lied about being pregnant, is killed, and Lucy and Wyatt are hastily shoved back together without fixing the issues between them on-screen. TPTB have claimed that their pairing was always endgame and the reunion would have happened anyway–albeit less swiftly and unrealistically–but they were Made For Each Other, loved each other all along, blah blah blah.

Which brings us back to The Philadelphia Story. The scene at the pool between Tracy and Mike is iconic for a reason. Mike is very “eat the rich” and she calls him out for being an intellectual snob, he tells her she’s wonderful and that the other men didn’t know what they were talking about, and their kiss is incredibly cinematic. It’s truly romantic…

In the moment.

For that moment, that one night, the audience can root for this couple. Mike is saying what Tracy needs to hear, and she’s enjoying letting herself fail by getting drunk and doing the unexpected. It’s sweet.

But it isn’t the endgame. No one means it to be.

After the multiple confrontations that arise out of the pool situation, Tracy breaks off with George just before the wedding. Mike asks Tracy to marry him and she turns him down. Liz loves him, and while he and Tracy like each other as friends, they would both be unhappy long-term. They live very different lives and have different values. And they’re not actually in love.

I don’t honestly believe this was intentional as foreshadowing that Lyatt may not be endgame so much as Abigail Spencer really wanting to wear The Dress. But even as a subconscious accidental parallel, it’s decent. Mike is nice and he and Tracy get along fairly well, but he’s better suited to Liz, who has stood by and loved him for years while waiting for him to mature enough for forever with her. Tracy, having realized that she doesn’t want the picture-perfect (on the outside) life she envisioned—and having seen that Dexter, now sober and much changed, is not the man he was when he hurt her—she forgives Dexter for the pain of their past. He lets go of it all as well and they remarry, this time making it down the aisle rather than eloping as they did before.

And as a book I adore (Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos) says: “Jimmy Stewart is always and indisputably the best man in the world, unless Cary Grant should happen to show up.”

9 People You Would Like to Know Better

I've been tagged by... A lot of people. @authortobenamedlater @fairytale-lights aaaaand it seems like somebody else, but those are the only ones I'm finding in my drafts. ANYWAY, thank you! <3

1. Three ships: Jisbon (Patrick Jane/Teresa Lisbon, The Mentalist); my first ship that really introduced me to the concept of shipping/fanfic/fandom in general. Garcy (Garcia Flynn/Lucy Preston, Timeless); to this day my best experience with fandom as a community. It's hard to explain, but something about the bonding that took place while everyone was fighting to save the show together will make that ship forever hold a space in my heart, I think. And Emotional Compass (Will Zimmerman/Helen Magnus, Sanctuary); Chosen for being the latest ship living rent-free in my head, though I'm due for a new one any time soon.

2. First ever ship: So Jisbon was the ship that introduced me to fandom, BUT my first ship before I knew what shipping was? Either Superman/Wonder Woman, or, going back further, a spider and a worm from a couple of kid books I read. I don't remember the titles or anything now, but they were buddies, and I shipped them hardcore.

3: Last Song: Champagne Problems (Clean Version) by Taylor Swift

4. Last Film: The 1950s Cinderella

5. Currently Reading: Pastwatch by Orson Scott Card, and Once Upon A Christmas Heart by Melody Carlson. Vastly different books, I'll say.

6. Currently Watching: Not much. I've nudged a few different shows, but nothing is really sticking.

7. Currently consuming: Nothing. I have a bottle of water I should probably be drinking from, though.

8. Currently Craving: Rest. I had a busy and stressful dream last night (late to work+can't find boss's phone number to call and explain+texts to coworkers aren't going through+tried to drive there but drove to the wrong side of town+oh no I tried to get back in my car to drive to the right side of town and it Wasn't There Anymore+you get the idea), and am hoping I rest better tonight.

SMG4 Revival AU headcanons, part 3

((We have more headcanons for this AU folks, here we go))

**as for this year, X and FM have started dating as well

** Niles and SMG0 are engaged to be married, they got engaged near the end of the Isolation arc

** Axol and Melony are also engaged, they got engaged around the holiday season last year

** currently I have two more couples getting engaged planned for the AU.

** regarding Axol and Melony's engagement, Garcello went with Axol to pick out the ring

** Certain characters know how to play instruments.

** Axol knows how to play the Ocarina and the synth guitar (Gar taught him)

** both Niles and SMG0 can play piano

** as of X and FM dating, Glitchy Red and Steven from Strangled Red have joined the family. King has as well.

** Garcy, Annie, Chris, and King all live together in a pretty big house (Gar's got money from his dad and his career)

** Enzo briefly returned, and isn't too fond of what SMG4 has become (aka modern SMG4)

** given what the three main boys have gone through, Axol, Niles, and Garcy all have PTSD, which SMG3 helps with

** Garcello will occasionally babysit JubJub

** as of the Christmas Special story, Henry Morris, Austin Sanders, and Aika are alive again and back with their friends

** despite being a demon, Kaizo gets along well with Armaros

**Austin also gets along well with Kaizo and Niles.

** Henry becomes close with Steven and Glitchy Red

** Steven gets Miki back, however, unlike the others, Miki is reincarnated as an egg, hatching into a shiny charmander named Miko.

** Axol is an orphan, given Axolotls lay thousands of eggs, this happens. Axol has only met six of his known siblings. Among them, Axol's one of the youngest. He has met two younger brothers, one older brother, and three older sisters (kinda basing this off a drawing Geeky made of Axol with his siblings)

** Niles has siblings too, five older siblings, making him the youngest. Two older brothers (Milo and Cato) and three older sisters (May, Summer, and Clove) his parents are Camille and Niles Sr. (Yes he's named after his father)

** playing with SMG2's head is like playing with a squishmallow

** Two doesn't like it, unless it's SMG1

** When Mario wants to invite people to his big party to celebrate MAR10 Day, Garcello says yes to going, as he was gonna close the music store for the day.

** quick note: Garcello runs a music store, Belle lives in the apartment above the store, making Garcy her landlord.

** Gar however doesn't join Mario and Bowser on their endeavor to change the constitution.

** during the party, Axol and Niles join Bob, Meggy, Tari and SMG3 in trying to get SMG4 to come out of his room. No luck.

** when the big fight occurs between Warriors and Meggy, and them taking out the router, Niles sees an opportunity and hides the router in Garcello's bag. Garcello takes the hint and hides on the roof of the castle

** After SMG4 comes out of his room, he demands to know where the router is, only to realize Garcy's got it and runs outside.

** Garcy hides in the roof of the castle, when he hears SMG4 shout for him, demanding the router back, yelling "why were you even brought back to life?"

** Hurt, Garcy throws the backpack at SMG4's head, knocking him unconscious, before leaving. Axol follows after him.

** SMG4 regains consciousness and the rest of the episode plays out like normal

((Is that last bit going too far? In a sense... yeah, but I feel if that happened, well, let's just say Four's in for some real trouble with both Axol and Garcello. And Annie too))

After the war, Flynn and Lucy never took the small things for granted. It was why they went all out for the holidays. The big tree, the decorations, the baking of gingerbread cookies, snowman making, drinking the most over the top hot chocolates, you name it, they went for it. They loved every carefree moment of joy it brought to their lives.

Garcy + first holidays alone

Hey look y'all my personal vendetta against the Byers Christmas Caroler figures my grandma maintains a collection of finally made it into a fic and of course it had to be for these babes, who I think would share my opinions on the nightmare-fuel potential of those things. Prompt also requested by an anon. Usual post-canon-divergence situation, PG-ish, and also on ao3.

How the hell is she supposed to do this?

Lucy asks herself that question, in the first few months of returning to some kind of normal life. She suspects she will never stop asking herself that more than she ever did before all her plans and routines took a several-year detour, but in time the frequency will become lower, in time she’ll get back to her previous level of petty anxieties and-

December is an emotional minefield. Almost always has been. This year, at least, she gets to deal with it with the support of a partner who’d rather help wrangle her damage than do anything about his own.

“The hell is this?” he asks one afternoon. The attempt at excavating the house has taken a temporary detour into the garage, current graveyard of a greater number of Christmas decorations than Lucy remembers her mother ever putting up but then again who even knows how many altered timelines purchased them and-

“A mistake,” Lucy decides is a tactful enough answer. “A creepy, expensive mistake.”

The current box in the center of the space – they are not bringing anything properly indoors that they can’t identify and have no desire to keep, there have to be some ground rules in dealing with this mausoleum of pretentiousness and questionable taste – is at least identifiable. Lucy can’t offhand remember the official name of the figures in question, but she had enough childhood nightmares about the damn things coming to life, and over the years they did multiply, and-

“Expensive secondhand too?”

“We can only hope. If you’re okay with dealing with that.”

One of the more surprising lessons Lucy has learned about herself in the past few months, courtesy of the eclectic array of possible family heirlooms she doesn’t want but that may be worth decent money, is there are subcultures she doesn’t care to deal with. Doll collectors, for one. Nothing personal, but some hobbies do attract a type, and… point being, these figures are doll-adjacent, and if she recalls right there’s probably at least two more boxes of them yet to be identified, and-

“I can claim enough innocence to handle it,” Flynn mutters, like he’s ever successfully claimed innocence in his life. “I’m helping my girlfriend clean out a deceased relative’s house, I don’t know much about what these things are, we just want them gone… none of that is actually a lie.”

It’s a good distraction, at least. The taking apart of a life, the constant reminders of how neutral so much of her childhood was, so little ruined by what she didn’t know about her family at the time but also so little she wants to keep in any sense. Opportunities to begin again and-

“We could just ignore all of this,” she says after a few minutes. They have now found a second box of the figures and the count is up to twenty-seven humans and an even creepier-looking… sufficient to say, whomever designed that thing had clearly never actually seen a cat, Lucy thinks, and-

“Ignore…”

“Holiday stuff. Memories. Start over. I’m not attached to anything. I’ll do whatever means something to you, but-“

“I can go to church on Christmas Eve alone. I’m not sure you should make your debut around that many candles.”

It’s affectionate in a way Lucy still isn’t quite used to, an awareness of her tendencies that feels protective and makes her warm. “Does anyone even think I’m real at this point?”

“I’ve shown enough pictures. It helps that you look so…”

She connects the dots in her mind just a little faster than she’d like. “The one time with the collapsed shelving, huh?”

“You weren’t in danger, I just thought a picture might help with the explanations if you had broken something minor or-“

“No danger. Yeah. Just a godawful amount of blankets. I have mentioned how much of this stuff I can’t explain, right?”

“Anything hidden,” he repeats, and this will remain a recurrent conversation for the rest of their lives and she almost loves it.

“We’ll do new things. Next year. This year I don’t want to deal.”

“Alright.”

In the end, the grand total is sixty-one human-esque figures and three animals that are a little harder to identify, all of which get donated somewhere because they need to get out of the house as soon as possible.

In the end, Lucy stays home on Christmas Eve and watches the most deliberately bad holiday romcoms she can find, and that’s a part of her past routines she’s okay with keeping.

They’ll figure this all out. There’s no rush.

Christmas started early for me this year, and I'm so very happy!

@BattleshipGarcy made a wonderful fanart for my fanfic Steam! (Which was inspired by one of her fics, anyway) I'm so so happy and grateful! She is the best!
