Making my way through Bond movies, just watched Thunderball and You Only Live Twice. If the two Twice is better, if only for its high 60’s interiors. While hopelessly racist and sexist, it is a cut above the others in style so far

"Goldfinger" turned 60 yesterday so I rewatched the DVD with a vodka martini (coincidentally it's the first film to say "shaken, not stirred") and I enjoyed it so much I had another around the time Bond actually orders one (about half way into the film) and the next thing I knew Bond was fighting Oddjob and there were 10 minutes left...
Moral of the story is: When you basically cut out alcohol in your 30s beyond one or two units a week, you can no longer process it without instantly falling asleep as a defence mechanism to prevent a hangover.

we need to talk about costuming in the agggtm murder tv show. (it's really good!!)
apologies in advance for the fact that i am not tech savvy enough to include pictures for reference, you guys are just going to have to take my word as gospel in this post.
so, among all my freaking out over the trailer and numerous rewatches yesterday, i noticed a really cool costume choice for max hastings (ew).
at 25 seconds into the trailer, we get a glimpse at scene with pip and max (ew). and in that scene, we can see he's wearing a black bow tie with a white tuxedo jacket and a red flower on the lapel. this was a very specific, very deliberate, and very clever choice made by the show people. (honestly not sure if i give credit to the writers or the producers or the costume department, so we're going with "show people".)
this bow tie/tux jacket/flower ensemble didn't just come out of nowhere. it was first worn by sean connery as james bond in the film goldfinger (1964). then, harrison ford recreated it in his second indiana jones film, indiana jones and the temple of doom (1984). then, daniel craig wore this look in another bond movie: spectre (2015).
whatever is going on in this scene, it's not something that we've seen in the book. my only book-based theory is that it was a halloween party, because things come to a head in late october/early november in the book. however, it could be some kind of other fancy-dress party, since we see pip and cara in some kind of costume at another point in the trailer.
regardless of the context, i think it's a really, really good costume choice. if max hastings (ew) were dressing up as some kind of fictional character, he would choose to dress up like bond, who is traditionally portrayed as badass, heroic, handsome, etc.
but, from a meta point of view, i think it's really neat that the show people understood the character of max hastings (ew) enough to make this costuming decision/make him make that decision. i also feel like there's a nice commentary happening here because although james bond is, on first impression, handsome, heroic, and badass, there is an issue with how bond (especially in the older movies, but also sometimes in the more recent ones) treats and interacts with women.
if anyone has any idea what could be going on in this scene, i'd love to hear your thoughts!!

Top 5 Bond films!
Want to preface this with a few things. First, this franchise is hugely problematic and I do not enjoy it blindly. I did however latch onto it in middle school, and aesthetically and musically it was very formative. John Barry's scores for the series are still among my favorite film scores. His music is sophisticated yet straightforward and has inspired me greatly. Also the franchise has been a great way for me to learn about filmmaking and history. That being said, let's get into it.
Thunderball (1965) It was my first, but even if it hadn't been it'd still be my favorite. It's the 4th in the series and imo catches the franchise at it's zenith. I think it's the last film before the series grew 'too big for it's britches', striking a balance between the outlandish scope of the later films and the tighter and comparatively grounded espionage of the series' early entries.
Casino Royale (2006) I'm confident claiming that this is objectively the best movie in the series. It takes the character of Bond seriously but sill manages to be very entertaining and can I say glamorous? The action sequences are riveting, the cast is excellent, and it's perhaps David Arnold's best score for the series.
You Only Live Twice (1967) In so many ways this film has not aged well (Sean Connery in yellowface, for one...) and tbh it's been harder and harder for me to rewatch. But there is so much about it that makes for good "imagination fuel". The film mostly takes place in Japan, and it's a fascinating portrait of (at least a white British perspective of) Japan in the mid-late 60s. Though in some ways it's a sloppy film, there are times it makes great use of it's enormous budget - most notably Ken Adam's volcano base rocket silo set(complete with helipad and monorail), a gorgeous custom Toyota 2000GT sports car (roof cut off bc at 6'2" Sean Connery was too tall to fit inside), and a car chase involving a tandem-rotor helicopter and a giant electromagnet... Also, if you watched Totally Spies as a kid, this movie's where they got the whole 'whimsical slide dumps you into secret espionage office' shtick.
Goldfinger (1964) Though I prefer Thunderball, there's no denying Goldfinger is the series' most iconic and enduring film. This is where the style and tone of the series solidified. The cast is memorable, there are lots of iconic moments, though "Bond girl" Pussy Galore's arc is misogynistic (shocker, I know), homophobic, and deeply troubling. Acknowledging that, it's a compact and tightly-paced espionage adventure that manages to be very entertaining and has been a big influence on the franchise and in popular entertainment at large,
Diamonds Are Forever (1971) Honestly I wasn't quite sure what to pick for #5. I haven't seen most of these movies in ages. There are definitely better Bond movies, but I have an affection for the hot mess that is DAF, largely because it's probably my favorite of John Barry's scores for the series. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) is pretty good despite how bland George Lazenby is. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) is the best of the Moore era, but I DESPISE Roger Moore. I remember liking what I've seen of Dalton's 2 Bond movies, though I'm so foggy on them. Brosnan is fine, but I don't have the attachment to him that I do to Connery. Quantum of Solace (2008) I remember really liking and maybe that'd be a better choice for #5, but hear me out: Jimmy Dean (OF BREAKFAST-SAUSAGE FAME!) plays a reclusive Howard Hughes-esque millionaire, Charles Grey (OF ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW FAME!) plays cat-petting villain Blofeld and even does drag, Shirley Bassey sings the title song which includes the lyric "touch it, stroke it, and undress it", there's cheezy casino source music [that played all day in my head in middle school], and hot ladies who crush Sean Connery with their thighs.
Also I recommend the podcast Kill James Bond! (recommended to me by @aeschylus-stan-account) if you're interested in something that unpacks the problematic history of this franchise in a fun way.

The grand James Bond movies rewatch in a very random order with a possible skipping Roger Moore movies cause I don't like his 007 that much
Having heard tragic news about Honor Blackman, the chosen movie chould have been only one - Goldfinger.
Finally the movies (looking chronologically) started to get intro songs - Goldfinger also is one of the few that stays with you for a looong time. Also I think it’s very Bond-like clasic in it’s simplicity - girls and gold.
Now, onto the good part cause the creative writers strike again. How, tell me, how did they let people name a character Pussy Galore. HOW ON EARTH. From years ago I remembered that her part was bigger and even more crucial - even though that wasn’t the case, she was good - once again I‘ve got to appreciate Bond Girls that weren’t defined in the movie just by being kissed and/or adored by 007 (like a certain lady with a gorgeous bow in Switzerland). Not only Pussy was a successful pilot who didn’t need Mr Bond at all, but she also trained other female pilots. YES.
Tumblr media
This movie had a few plotholes or at least parts where it didn’t make that much sense but I guess it’s a) more of Fleming’s fault and b) part of the charm. And the main charm of the movie is, per usual, Connery’s charm, wit, ingenuity and charisma. Of course he talks bad man out of killing him. Of course, he knows  how to play golf and cheat the cheater. And I’m gonna ignore Bond’s comment about the Beatles.
The bad guy, Mr Goldfinger, was a little pretentious especially with that gold obsession. It was a good trope (and a creative way to kill). He gave that weird powerful white man vibe that was just unsettling. Part of the movie was also very much Tarantino-like with Asian kimono-clad gangsters which combined with later parts happening in Kentucky gave a rather odd mix.
Nevertheless, I will rewatch it again, for many reasons. Also for Pussy.
Thank You, Miss Blackman.

For the past few days I've been rewatching the Bond films of the Daniel Craig era and I have to tell you a have a very soft spot for all of them. For different reasons each.
1. Casino Royale was probably the first Bond film I've ever seen. I say 'probably', cause I can't really remember which one was my first (yeah, I know it sounds stupid, but I wasn't a Bond fan back then and I didn't care much... I guess it was either this one or GoldenEye).
I love the incredibly bondian soundtrack (and the title song, which gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it!!!) and the cast - Daniel Craig, Eva Green, and Mads Mikkelsen form a legendary trio in this one! I have no idea how they managed to make the poker scenes look so exciting. And also, the way the novel was modernized in order to make CR more interesting for the present-day audiences never fails to astonish me. The film is much better than the novel in my opinion.
2. Quantum of Solace isn't a common choice among the Bond fans when it comes to listing their favourite films of the franchise, but I've always liked it a lot. I do not agree with the amount of hate it gets and I believe it's underrated. If you watch it straight after CR, it becomes more clear why it has the very right to be so different from other Bond films.
Again, I think the soundtrack sounds quite good. Maybe the story could have been a little less realistic, but on the other hand the idea of water being the most valuable source on Earth appeals to me. Just as the relationship between Bond and Camille, which is pretty special, so I don't mind they only shared a kiss.
3. Skyfall... Oh, this is a big one. Words can't describe how much I adore it. I consider it to be a masterpiece, but I usually refuse to refer to it as a Bond film. It's rather a film about Bond.
It has broken many conventions associated with a Bond film (let's just mention Bond experiencing a middle-age crisis), but at the same time it has constantly referred to the previous films, especially to the Sean Connery era (Bond's "death", just as in You Only Live Twice, an ejector seat just as in Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger etc.). It also refers to the novels (the names of Bond's parents, his Scottish ancestry), even though it has got an original script.
The music is one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard (and one of the very few I actually listen to): subtle, but yet able to make you emotional. Not to mention the title song, which is in my top three songs of all time. Another thing worth noting is the cinematography. Skyfall has taken filming a Bond film to a different level, the whole film looks like you are being shown a sophisticated collection of paintings in an art gallery.
And, of course, the characters. And Mallory. And the mother and son relationship between Bond and M.
4. Spectre is the first Bond film I've experienced in a cinema and the first one I've watched as a declared Bond fan, so I'll always be sentimental about this one.
The plot is a bit too far-fetched for me, but it doesn't necessarily mean I do not find it enjoyable. The amount of references to the previous films makes it nearly impossible for you to count them all and I love it. It contains a few really funny jokes. It's got a brilliant political subplot, which allows Mallory to be more active (yeah!)
Can't wait to add a fifth film to that list.

Rewatched Goldfinger, of the three I’ve watched most recently it’s undoubtedly the best. Thunderball is entirely forgettable and Live Twice is bizarre in every sense and intensely racist. The sense of fun Twice engages, and the style it exhibits are the only saving graces, but both of these are exemplified in Goldfinger in ways the other two can’t hope to emulate

Hi!, The use of '42' at the start THP has to be the most obvious/not obvious way to point what was going on in Grissom's head and heart. Lost on me at the time.... What do you think of the other music used during S9? Also in the universe world who is your favorite writer? DR for me by a mile...
hi, anon!
for the favorite writer, mine's rambo, too, though sarah goldfinger is probably a close second.
as for the music in s9, i guess i've not thought too much about it, aside from maybe "leave out all the rest" by linkin park in the eponymous episode just because i was a pretty big lp fan back in the day.
in general, i feel like, as is the case with most tv soundtrack songs, there are times when the csibods picked particular tracks mostly for vibes rather than for exact lyrical relevance, plus times when the music is more reflective of what they could buy the rights to rather than what was particularly narratively significant.
that said, i do think that a couple of the songs during s9 were chosen specifically because they tied in to the gsr story, and both "42" by coldplay and "leave out all the rest" by linkin park were among them.
another one that i think has some gsr valence is "pity and fear" by death cab for cutie in episode 09x04 "let it bleed" (which we only hear a few lines of right at the end but which has some connection to grissom lying in his and sara's big empty bed with hank, looking miserable, right before he gets the call-out).
of those three songs, i think they are used to show how grissom really wrestles his feelings concerning sara's absence; how he's haunted by her not being there and vacillates between blaming her for abandoning him and blaming himself for giving her cause (in his view) to abandon him.
honestly, it's been a while since i've rewatched s9 through—it's so heavy that i can only stand to revisit it every few years or so—so i can't really say if there's any kind of chronological progression in the songs, in terms of how they're reflecting grissom's evolving feelings over time, but i do think there's some connection there, at least.
sorry to not have a more well-thought-out answer on this one!
thanks for the question! please feel welcome to send another any time.

Translation:
1. *steps* 9:30 pm (there a typo but I'm too tired to fix it) *yawn* Finally I can go home. I hope I still have time to rewatch "Goldfinger".
2. *creak* (NOPE) Dr. Marcel's secret room! But... Where is the doctor himself?.. (I can't hear anything)
3. S: Blaze, I urgently need to tell you something! *slam* B: If it's again about mini-golf - I'm not in the mood.
4. S: Hey! Rude. It's actually about Dr. Marcel's secret room... I was passing by when I heard... sounds... B: Sounds? S: Yep... Like crying... What do you think the doctor is hiding there? B: I don't know. And I don't think it's a good idea to find out... M: Stiesel, what are you doing?
5. S: DOCTOR MARCEL! I, um, justsawthatthedoorwasopenandIwantedtocloseit. Ha-ha M: What so funny, Stiesel? S: Wha? I didn't- M: This room is not a joking matter, do you understand? S: Ye-yes, doctor...

Saw :)
send me something for a tier list
now im certain if i were to binge watch them all rn a few of my opinions would be subject to change
Tumblr media
don't mind how weird it looks just allow me to give explanations [light spoilers]:
at S-tier we got the first Saw. for obvious reasons this is my favorite of the series and is a PERFECT entry into the series that unfortunately sucks afterwards. the ending scene and the "game over" adds a special amount of *chefs kiss* in the first installment. not to mention but, the first saw has the most rewatch-ability of the series that the others don't. the first film of the franchise was a gold mine and one of the first looks inside the heads of two monumental filmmakers (James Wan and Leigh Whannell) that would give us some of the BEST (modern) horror movies TODAY (insidious, the conjuring, Annabelle, upgrade, etc).
(not to mention the LEGENDARY reverse bear trap)
Saw II is in A-tier mostly cause its fresh in my mind honestly.
Saw III is in C-tier. honestly could care less about the greys anatomy bullshit going on in this one. although we do get good information essential to the plot (also connecting to the ending of II). also kinda feels like a fever dream
Saw IV is in the middle of B and C-tier but mostly a higher B. i think it's a bit underrated. there was all around some solid drama and good traps in this one.
Saw V is D-tier cause i don't even remember that bullshit. not a memorable or notable entry in this franchise.
Saw VI is B-tier because I'm biased towards this movie. well— primarily biased towards the soundtrack of this movie as it's one of my favorite OST from a film in general - regardless of drama. I also enjoy the extreme edition of the film.
Saw 3D the not-so final chapter is mid B and C-tier. only reason it's this high is because it has nice traps and Chester Bennington in it.
Jigsaw is lower C-tier/upper D-tier. I think the movie is very pretty. but chronologically it doesn't make any sense but oh well.
Spiral is lower C-tier/D-tier. I wanted to like this soooooo much. Without spoilers, things that saved the movie: 1. it was pretty. and 2. it's soundtrack. I cannot explain how much it meant to me to hear Young Nudy in a horror movie. and to have 21 Savage do the lead track for the film. Nudy and 21 are rappers that SHOULD do horror soundtracks because of how their discography and aesthetic looks/sounds. but this movie OTHERWISE??? Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (also wrote jigsaw) should never be allowed near the saw franchise again. Saw is not a franchise that is regarded highly when it comes to dialogue but HOLY FUCK its so fucking bad. While I like the plot of the movie, it eventually turns sour and feels like a half-assed, rushed attempt at a movie that people had somewhat high standards about. super nice traps tho!
