There's a reddit thread on the BG3 sub where the user u/InklingRain posted a spreadsheet they made with all the companion approvals. Super useful in general both for playing the game and for fic, so I thought I'd post it on tumblr and play around a little!
There's a top row with the average approval by companion, but I didn't find that very useful, so I changed it to the count of approvals (i.e. count of approvals & disapproval total, how often a companion had a reaction to something). We all know Astarion gives a lot of disapprovals here and there, but they're only -1 at a time, so no big deal, right?
No. Minsc has the least at only 45 reactions, Halsin at 95, Minthara at 145, and of the main companions, Gale is pretty average at 198, Lae'zel at 224, and Shadowheart, rather opinionated at 258...
but that's nothing compared to Astarion's 406. That's almost 150 more than the next person!!! That's more than Minthara and Shadowheart combined! Babygirl really woke up one day and decided to get in a snit over everything that happens 😂
(Longer post about count of positive and negative opinions, sum of approvals and disapprovals, and some major outliers below. Picture with values at the very end.)
But that's a bit disingenuous. If we look at the ratio of positive to negative opinions (not taking value into account), Astarion's pretty average at 30% (negative count over sum count, so let's call that negativity). This is similar to Gale (31%), Karlach (30%), and Lae'zel (32%). In theory, getting Astarion's approval or disapproval is just as easy as any of theirs, with a 20% bias towards positive approvals. Later companions are weighted heavily towards the lower end of the spectrum, with Jaheira at 13% negativity and Minsc at 9%. As you only get them very late, it's pretty clear that the game gives you a lot of opportunities to get their approvals and thus open up more of their quests and dialogue.
However. We have an outlier. Wyll Ravenguard, clocking in at an indecent 38% negativity! Which really just goes to show, while Astarion is the most opinionated, Wyll has the most disapprovals, making him the judgiest companion of all 🤣
However, this really wouldn't be a good post if we didn't look at the value of approvals. Karlach, for instance, has the strongest disapproval value of -100 (given if you sleep with her and then call it a mistake). Ouch. This is clearly at outlier and doesn't say much about Karlach's changeability of opinion in general. If we look at the sum of positive and negative opinions, this is a very heavy swing, making up 100 points of her total 191 disapproval points possible to her 281 approvals total. Another outlier is Minsc, who currently possesses a 43% disapproval percentage (a heavy -50 disapproval given if you sacrifice him to Sarevok. Jaheira, by contrast, apparently doesn't give a damn, or her value might simply not be included in the dateset.)
Removing outliers is really a matter of opinion here, so I'll only remove the most extreme swings, such as the above mentioned disapprovals.
The otherwise strongest swings are Astarion (-15 for telling him it was a mistake preventing him from drinking Araj's blood, or saying you only wanted to sleep with him, not deal with his trauma) and Wyll (+20 for siding with Karlach during his confrontation with her, which really shows he didn't really want to kill her and is very grateful you stopped him). Halsin gives +40 for reuniting Oliver with Thaniel, which...lifting the shadow curse is sort of his life's mission, and a bit of a unique case, so while it makes sense, I think it's such a unique event that can't be topped by anything else and will remove it. Jaheira give +20 for extending the Emperor's protection to Minsc, and, for funsies, Minthara's heaviest disapproval is -5 for donating to Lolth at the Stormshore Tabernacle. (lol)
I only chose to remove the aforementioned Karlach, Minsc, and Halsin values, as they're all very large swings and rather character-defining or personal to the individuals mentioned, so I don't think it says much about them in a more general day-to-day sense.
Now, using the sums of our negative and positive values, Gale is our most Negative Nancy, clocking in at 37%, which goes to show that while he's pretty average for the amount of things he cares about, when he disapproves, it's a strong one. Next up is Astarion at 35%, and Wyll at 34%. Lowest are Jaheira and Minsc at 7% and 4% respectively, which makes an intuitive sort of sense: Jaheira is old and just over being upset by the players poor choices, and Minsc is an insanely positive person overall. The next most positive companion is Halsin at 13%, which also matches with his vibe pretty well, followed by Minthara at 17%, Karlach at 24%, Lae'zel at 26%, and Shadowheart at 28%.
Tl;dr: Astarion has many, many opinions, but Wyll is the most judgemental (most disapprovals compared to approvals possible). However, when it comes to the strength of those disapprovals, Gale reigns supreme, followed by Astarion.
If don't break Karlach's heart, help Halsin achieve his life's ambition, or sacrifice Minsc, then they're pretty positive overall. Later companions are heavily weighted to approve of your actions, and Minthara is comparatively judgemental, but overall far more easy to gain approval than disapproval from.
If you take the average of all these values and include the later companions to look at as a personality "baseline" of how judgy and how strong those disapprovals may be, then...the Act 1 companions are all dramatic af, which really should come to no ones' surprise, while Karlach is the most willing to give the benefit of the doubt imo.

I archived the magnus archives
idk link to the full thing is here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vA6kin0H5bk_Nu15WTnwmAEPTAx9MLVO/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=117712544114786577413&rtpof=true&sd=true
I genuinely don't know what anyone would use this for, and honestly doing recreational paperwork is crazy and i need to sit with myself for a bit and think about this one
anyway john's case numbering system sucks so i made a new one, not really that good but it acts better as a call number system. In real life there would be albums and catalogue numbers but thank god the magnus institute archive does NOT exist so that's not an issue

ateez discography stats?? (preview lmfao)
(freak in the spreadsheets that's what)

work has been chill lately so I've taken to developing an excessively large and detailed spreadsheet that analyzes ateez's discography and line distribution from debut until present... will be posting my full summary soon because as a STEM and spreadsheet nerd I think this is super fun and interesting LOL (if you hate math get off my page (just kidding pls stay))
yes I went through ateez's entire fucking discography to record their total line time for this, shout out to the four line distribution channels I ripped shit from (HEXA6ON, random_k, k_line distribution and others doing the most for this fandom)
my favourite finding so far:
this is a trend most kpop fans know about but I'm showing graphically here. we see a lot of groups start out with line distributions that rely on one or two vocal powerhouses to carry the rest of the group (debate all you fucking want about this, I'm not getting involved in that shit I'm just saying it as it is); then the distribution becomes more "fair" as time goes on and members all get more experience.
in the graph above, there's a lot of variance in 2018, but all the lines have converged recently, indicating a more equal line distribution. the distribution was most equal in 2023 and we've diverged a little bit since then, but 2024 isn't over yet!
some other nerd shit:
hongjoong starts the most songs out of all the members, with 17 songs in which he sang the first line. he's closely followed by yunho, seonghwa, and then san.
yeosang's share of lines has increased by a net 76% since debut, while jongho's has decreased by a net 77%.
13.7% of ateez's total songs are remixes and 12.3% are a Japanese/Korean/English version of an existing song.
on average, ateez songs run for 3 minutes and 12 seconds
whenever a future song is teased in a previous song, we typically wait 3 months for the full song to be released... with the exception of "Sector 1," which was teased in "Outro: Long Journey" back in January of 2020, and wasn't released in full until almost 3 years later.
and a peak at the spreadsheet madness behind all this:
will be posting the rest soon, stay tuned ✌🏻

ALSO. do you have any contestshipping fic recs ??
I absolutely do! Here's a list of completed fics :) Sorry that the list is long and wordy, but I cannot be concise about these two, nor the talented authors that write for them. So, without further ado... long post ahead. 🌹 (there's a spreadsheet screenshot at the bottom with the tags/summaries/word count/etc all laid out if this is too wordy! This post is also mostly just effusive rambling rather than summaries, so details are at the bottom in the sheet.)
Apt 212 on Ao3 by @the-scriptress (Ao3 user link) is my holy grail, my favorite fic of all time, my 'I know lines of this by heart' fic. Real-world AU, 91k of everything anyone could ever ask for. And they were apartment neighbors... I stayed up to read the entire thing in one sitting until 5 am about a year and a half ago and it's lived in my head rent-free ever since. I can also vouch for everything else she's written. 4 AM and Five Months are oneshot favorites of mine, but you really cannot go wrong with the entire Scriptress catalog.
And I CANNOT leave out Grow As We Go on Ao3 by the lovely @lostlegendaerie (Ao3 user link) for a wonderful glimpse into May and Drew's future. It ties in all of what makes them feel so magnetic in the show and adds such an evolved timeskip element to it in a way that feels so poignant and true to the characters. Saro is truly one of the fandom's trailblazers, an aptly usernamed legend whose characterizations have really shaped what the fandom is and who the characters are perceived as today, in my opinion. This fic is so soft and hilarious and it hits every single mark for me, time and time again. It's such a perfect blend of canon and personal flair in a way that I adore. It takes place in Paldea and I think of it, no joke, every single time I play SV.
i like the way you write my name by ImperfectWonderland on FFN is a nostalgic fave of mine! It's a really sweet coffeeshop AU, only 2.6k. Just a really nice pick-me-up, not unlike a cup of coffee. It's one of those sugary coffees with vanilla and cinnamon to me. Just sweet and warm and done way too soon!
More Confused Than Usual by theonewhohums (Ao3) straight-up feels like an episode to me. It's SUCH a fun time! Just a really cute and funny oneshot that totally fits with the vibe of the show. It reminds me of Who What When Where Wynaut a little bit. Suuuuper cute.
enter stage left by nicole_writes (Ao3) is a fandom classic. I haven't read it in a long time, but I just remember that it lives up to the kudos it's earned over the years. It's another fic that's really good if you want something that feels like it could be a continuation of canon rather than an AU (though I am a certified AU girlie).
Sand by nicolewrites37 on FFN is another absolute classic to me. I read this one when it first came out back in like 2015, I think? This one is multichaptered, in-universe, and it's one of those fics that I reread in one sitting late at night every so often. It really stuck with me. It uses lyrics from a Taylor Swift album before each chapter as a little thematic preview, and it's really not my favorite album of hers (1989) but I love it solely for the association it has with this fic. This one's so nostalgic to me in a way that's kind of hard to put into words; it just immerses me in this hazy, far-away feeling every single time. It's really worth reading, and no CS fic rec is complete without this one, in my opinion. It's another pillar-of-the-fandom fic to me. This writer has some other good fics, too, on Ao3 and FFN (both linked above).
Seven by I am Lu is yet another classic. I don't have as much to say about this one, other than that it's just a great time. 10/10. Super sweet, and that 24k goes by SO quickly.
(It's not complete, but I've got a subscription to Dear Friend by @dependabledreamboat (Ao3 link). It's based on the romcom You've Got Mail and the musical She Loves Me, and it's got an epistolary element to it that I love! I don't read many ongoing works because there's frankly just not that many that are [actually] Contestshipping focused in 2025, but this one's on my current list!)
I am SUPER open to people adding their own recs or self promo in the comments/reblogs/etc. The more the merrier!
Here's a spreadsheet view for an easy visual guide! NOTE- I did not include every tag for every fic for the sake of spreadsheet size/readability, just the ones that I personally think give you the best idea of what you're in for, but I can't think of any warnings that I left out (and full tags can be seen at the links provided above).
#Contestshipping#Tay's tag#if you want more then trust me. I have more lmao.#I hope the @'s are okay to the people I @'ed! ❤️#also if anyone wants a fic spreadsheet for themselves lmk and I'll send a template over. I use excel but I could probably make one in-#-google sheets or whatever too! that might take me a couple days though just with other stuff I've got going on.#I can also make a post and show you guys how I do it for my personal archive which has more in-depth categories and filters.#I made this one for this post specifically#but mine has like. fandoms and site links and PDF links and completed/incomplete marker columns and such. I have this down to an art.#totally happy to share how I've got it set up if anyone wants! It's not hard at all and it's great for more secure local storage/archiving.#long post

How do you design your patterns for knitting?? They are so pretty! 😍
In Excel (or the spreadsheet program of your choice*). First I set the ratio of the cells so each cell is one stitch. Double knitting, like for the blanket is a 2:3 ratio, roughly, which means that every two stitches across is about the same length as three stitches upwards. So I set the width of each column to 0.3 cm and the height of each cell to 0.2 cm. (For contrast, standard colourwork is usually closer to a 4:5 ratio, so don't use double knitting diagrams for single knitting or vice versa)
(Weirdly, in Excel you only seem to be able to adjust in centimetres if you put the spreadsheet in print view first, so it looks like different pages, idk why. Excel sucks like that I guess.)
*Not Google Sheets, because last time I checked it doesn't allow background images. This may have changed since.
Then I put a thick black border around the limits of my pattern. For the baby blankets it's about 176 columns by 264 rows, though the width is subject to change a little based on the pattern (if I decide on a repeating border it has to be divisible by the right number), and if I change that, I might adjust the length as well because I want the blankets to be roughly square.
Once that's done, I decide on a theme and a rough idea of what I want it to look like. For my most recent blanket I knew I wanted mountains because my friends like to hike. I knew I wanted space because one of them is really into space stuff. And I knew I wanted chickens because the other has chickens that she loves.
When I know roughly what elements I want to include, I do an image search for silhouettes of that thing. This is one of the reasons I haven't made any of the patterns available, because copyright. I do transform the images I find, and some of the elements (borders, patterns) are entirely from my own mind, but there's a lot that's based off images I find. I don't specifically go searching for creative commons images because it's personal use and the only place I even show pictures of them is here on Tumblr. Like I said, I transform them, and it's personal use, so I'm pretty sure I'm clear just making my blankets for my friends, but any further might be questionable. Idk. Copyright is a thorny sort of a thing.
ANYWAY. I get a silhouette image (silhouettes because they're clearer, although one of the chickens on the latest blanket is from a photograph, but that's trickier to work with). Then I set it as the background of my Excel spreadsheet.
One interesting thing about Excel is that the zooming in and out doesn't affect the background image like it does the cells, so I zoom in or out until the image is about the size I want in relation to the size of the whole blanket. Then I colour in the cells on top of it. At first it's just the cells that are completely filled in in the image below, then it's the ones that are half filled in or more.
Once that's done, I remove the background image and I fuck around with what's left (essentially a pixel art version of the silhouette). This is the stage that takes a lot of time, because there's often a lot of tweaking to do to make it look good. Fine lines and curves are difficult, and sometimes things just need to be changed. For instance, the owl on my most recent blanket started out life as a long-eared owl and I changed it into a barn owl because that suited my aesthetic more. The mouse I adjusted the size of multiple times and the shape of the back and the ears and the nose... and the tail... to make it fit the space I wanted it in and also to make it look more mouse-like. Literally changing one cell can make a huge difference to how something looks, it's crazy.
For borders and decorative bits, I tend to just mess around with colouring in the cells in swirly patterns until I come up with a shape I like. Repeating patterns are a lot easier to do, but do require you to do maths to make sure they fit properly. This probably requires patience, but I find it strangely addictive and zen-like.
For the ivy on my last one, I used silhouettes for the leaves, then used the transform tools in excel to mirror the five or six different leaf silhouettes I had vertically and horizontally, then moved them around and connected them with twisting lines to create the impression of vines.
Once I've got all the separate pieces, I copy them all into the outline I have of the blanket and move them around (it's important to keep the originals separate, because when you move things in excel you can often copy over something and chop off an ear or a tail or half a bird).
But yeah, then I move stuff around until the layout works for me. Sometimes at this point I have to resize things, which is annoying.
Then, when I've got things roughly in place, I mess around with them some more until they look right. It's a lot of trial and error at this stage
For example, in the dragon and unicorn blanket I did, the dragon's tail was messed around with a lot at this point. I had it curling one way, then the other way. I made it really long. I made it really short. I had it end with spikes. I had it end with the spade.
As a final touch, I then add the more random details that don't need as much work, like the stars or the snowflakes, which are fairly easy to just design on the spot. I move those around as well, until I'm happy with them.
Then I start knitting.
The design does often evolve as I'm knitting. For instance, after seeing how the tension worked on the mouse in my most recent blanket, I realised that the planet was going to be stretched thin the way I had initially designed it, so I tweaked it to be fatter so it would appear more round in the finished product. Similarly I added some more leaves to the tree and moved the top branch down a bit for better framing.
That got kind of long, but I hope it helps.
#Ask me stuff#Knitting#stitchcraft#how I create knitting patterns#Anonymous#Making patterns for colour or cabling when there are increasing or decreasing rows is a lot more difficult#because you need to take into account where the decreases are and the changing number of stitches per row#But I have done that as well#One day I will finish my Rivendell Cable poncho#One day#I know Microsoft didn't intend to create a knitting pattern software#but they did#Also worth noting#Don't try and open a design from Excel in Google Sheets#it will not work#the column widths will fuck up#Luckily when you download it and open it in Excel or LibreOffice it looks fine still#but Google Sheets hates me

Currently trying to figure out how to make a calculator in LibreOffice that can take the "yes or no" answers of four questions and turn them into values for this horrendous formula I've mustered up:
(B1+G1(D1*C1)/P)+(B2+G2(D2*C2))=F
But I've never used spreadsheet formulas outside of basic adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, etc., so using IF/ELSE statements in a LibreOffice Calc document terrifies me. I barely know any Swift from Apple's Swift Playgrounds, but I feel like I could write a better script in Swift than the monstrosity I'm about to make in LibreCalc.

English:
So for the last couple of months I´ve been working on an Excel Presentation which objective is organize "all" of the "EPIC: The Musical" Full Fan-Animatics (that meet a certain criteria, which I´ll comment later).
It´s currently unfinished but I really wanted to share it and it would be helpfull if y´all tell me if everything is working properly, or if you have any form of feed-back about it. Also if you have a full animatic that I haven´t found and added yet send it to me so I can do that.
English
So my criteria of what animatics were added here was;
1) The animatic must be about EPIC, not about any other fandom. (This one is obligatory)
2) The animatic must be using a released version of the song, so animatics using snippets aren’t here.
3) The animatic must be of the full song, there is room for a couple of seconds missing, like 10 or something depending on the song.
Also, you might notice how the songs are indicated by either green, yellow or red(ish), each color have a meaning.
• Green: It follows all of the criteria previously mentioned.
• Yellow: It doesn’t follow one or two points of the criteria, the specifics would be:
- Because it’s using a non-oficial or non-released version of the song.
- Because it’s missing about 20 to 40 seconds (this variates from song to song).
- Because it’s (stated to be) un-finished.
- Because it’s set on a non-canon moment of the lore or is putting the song on an incorrect moment of the history.
• Red-ish: This one just shouldn’t be there but I putted there either way because I felt like it, they shouldn’t be there because:
- Any of the reasons in the criteria and in yellow, with atleast two at the same time.
- I wasn’t able to find the animatic or creator.
- It straight up doesn’t exist anymore.
• Amarillo: No cumple con uno o dos de Los puntos del criterio, de forma más específica sería;

Have you ever thought about swapping excel for something more... Serious and able to handle larger datasets?
Or are you the type of engineer who writes Visual Basic Macros in 2024?
The one time I was analyzing a database of any real size I used R, as instructed by my boss. However, for personal projects, I like to use Google Sheets. Is it the best software for whatever I'm trying to do? Hell no. But that's half the fun for me. The structure of the language means I have to think outside the boax and get really creative sometimes (you can somewhat replace if and for loops with arrayFormula, but watch out! It's definitely not 1:1). And I really like the look that CS majors make when I tell them "my Google Sheet supports STL files."
Basically- for larger applications at work, I don't use spreadsheets. For personal projects? Absolutely!
