What do you think happened to Charlie during Emerald Twilight? Did he know what was going on or did his ring just suddenly not work while he's on some strange planet and now no way to get off, for like. Years.
oh theres actually an issue of quarterly (#3) that tells us what happened when the battery was destroyed the first time!! he was on a planet (Hwagaagaa) trying to stop an invading military force from taking over and he ignored the call to assemble bc he was busy, and then his ring cut out and he was stranded in the middle of a warzone with literally nothing, so he ran for his life and hid until some farmers found him and then bc gerard jones is gerard jones, charlie somehow teaches the farmers to become a fearsome military through the power of acting even though charlie is, lovingly, a bitch and a pussy. anyways these panels are interesting to me bc if you squint and ignore the author you can pretend that the subtext here is that charlie became an actor because he's running from himself and he wants to be someone better than he actually is but he chooses the escapism route instead of self-improvement which adds a layer to his alcoholism and dead brother guilt backstory
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and this is where his bandanna comes from! its more of a cape but im ignoring that godbless
Tumblr media
anyways they eventually repel the invaders through a war of attrition (the invaders go this sucks idc anymore and leave), and charlie roams around the planet teaching people about the wonders of Shakespeare. and then somehow he joins the darkstars so i guess he either got off planet somehow or john swung by and rescued him. and then he dies 👍

A Guide to Writing (Pre-Parallax) Hal Jordan!
Overall Traits
Hal will almost always default to using the least amount of power as possible, often using his hands as a way of making sure Hal Jordan matters too
While he is friendly and well liked, Hal has very few close friends -he is closest to Tom Kalmaku and Carol Ferris. He is also close to Ollie Queen and Barry Allen, Ollie much more than Barry. He’ll often bring up his friends in his mind, using them as driving forces but also criticizers.
Hal believes in the ideal of a hero, and he often reprimands himself for not falling within that ideal. An example of this is him getting mad at himself for appreciating the cheers of those he rescued because a true hero acts out of an innate selflessness, not out of a love of praise.
Hal can be violent at times, most of all when someone threatens those he is close to. He has collapsed whole buildings on villains when they have hurt Tom or Carol, for example.
Talking and Personality
Hal makes jokes while fighting, especially when someone he loves is hurt. These jokes are to keep his mind off the stakes.
Hal invokes the name of the Guardians the way people invoke the names of God or Jesus. He’ll often say, “Great Guardians” in response to something shocking him. In addition, Hal calls the Guardians “masters” which most Green Lanterns at this time did. He is known as one of the most powerful and loyal members of the corps.
Hal is interesting because while he uses pet names, especially for people younger than him (calling girls “sweetheart” or “honey” and both genders “kid” even if they’re an adult), he will use full names a lot of the time. He calls Tom “Thomas” or “Mr. Kalmaku” frequently, and he’ll call Carol “Ms. Ferris” even while they’re dating.
Relationships
Tom Kalmaku: Tom and Hal are close friends, and Tom was the first person to know Hal’s double identity. Tom is close to both Hal and Carol, and he was involved in a majority of Hal’s earliest adventures. He is from Alaska, and he is married to Tegra. They have two children together, who, according to Secret Origins (1986) #36, both know Hal’s identity. They also call Hal “Uncle Hal”. While Tom is called an racist nickname off and on, during the period of comics from approx Green Lantern (1960) #129 to Gerard Jones' revival of Tom in Green Lantern (1990), this nickname was not used. This nickname was only brought back by Jones in an explicit attempt to make Hal less “politically correct”. Using this nickname will not make you more in line with older Hal stories, it just makes you racist.
Carol Ferris: Carol and Hal are old friends, and while their romantic relationship is off and on, they usually still get along and love each other even if they’re not together. Carol is the boss of Ferris Aircraft from Showcase #22 to Green Lantern (1960) #133, at which Carl Ferris retakes control of Ferris Aircraft. Carol is a self described “spoiled rich girl” that has worked hard her whole life to be considered equal to the version of herself that was supposed to be, aka Carl Jr. She’s not just Hal’s girlfriend but a well developed and strong character in her own right who understands why Hal works as Green Lantern. She is also Star Sapphire, a twisted version of herself where she is forced to hurt those who she loves. She has to reckon with this dominant personality who is always at the brink of breaking out.
Misc
Move around where Hal is located! While he is situation in Coast City from Showcase #22 to Green Lantern (1960) #49 and then after the roadtrip, he is also located in Washington for a time as an insurance agent (Green Lantern (1960) #52-69), he moved around as a traveling toys salesman (Green Lantern (1960) #70-76), and Ferris Aircraft is situated in L.A from approx Green Lantern (1960) #140 onward. In addition, the G.L. citadel is situated in L.A as well.
Include other gls! He was close to Katma Tui, Arisia Rrab, Tomar-Re, and Arkkis Chummuck. In addition, if you are including Guy and John, Hal frequently gave chances to Guy that no one else did. John and Guy did not get along.
Happy writing!

"Millions of dead. I hear them screaming. Before I'd even returned to Earth I could hear them in my mind. Before I saw the smoke blanketing California I knew something had happened. I hear them screaming-- 'Avenge me.' 'Avenge me.' 'Avenge me.'"

Clay told me there was an orchard here where they don’t ask questions, and if I remember the way the Earth works, it ought to be peach season now. I’m even back in California, where the summer morning’s soft as a woman’s hand on my brow. And best of all, the Dodgers just stomped the Giants at Candlestick Park. You know something... the world isn’t a bad place to live at all.

thoughts on gerard jones' hal?
👎
do not like it!!!!!!!!! #notmyhal!!!!!! gerard jones's run was the first time i had the pleasure of audibly going he would Not Fucking Say That like outloud at a green lantern comic. Pretty fucking sure the shit hal characterization we have today started with his fucking run bc booyyy howdy his hal is an annoying asshole. His hal is less of a character and more just a misogynistic self-insert power trip and the only thing he got right was having hal and carol decide to just be friends but he had to ruin that too by completely and utterly failing to understand carol's character and also being really weird to her i hope he rots in hell for many many many much better reasons than his writing but his writing sucks also he's just a shit fucking writer really and also an even worse human being tbh!!!

I miss the Hal who didn't care about celebrities and thought it was weird to care about that lame shit, now you're judging Frank Iero's outfit on the Internet. Not to mention the sexuality speculation - on the public Internet. All the while he's a straight but you as a lesbian were just saying how you're uncomfortable when your girlfriends talk about men they're attracted to. Sooooo.... they're opinions bother you and you can't have a conversation about that but public speculation about a straight man's fake homosexuality is OK because he can perform gay on stage... you can't have a conversation any friends should be able to have,, but you're wondering if those jumpscare ugly moids had sex or not... Got it. One rule for thee but not for me I guess... lame Hal
oh nooooo some anonymous weirdo on the internet misses the version of me they made up in their head 🥺🥺 as though i was not a fandom blogger for years before i ever heard of radblr as though i have not always been obsessed with some celebrity or other as though i have not been frerard speculating since i was 10. u dont know me. grow up.
u also obviously terribly misunderstood something about that little rant of mine the other day bc i was in fact not so much complaining that women in my life talk about men theyre attracted to. i was complaining that i as a lesbian feel left out and wish i could be part of those conversations and i still struggle with accepting that i never can be and it makes me sad <3 and i talked about how that very much relates to my interest in whoever my current Celebrity Guys are because i struggle to have conversations about them even with many other fans because they simply experience things that i cannot and it makes me feel terribly like im missing out on something and like im missing out on bonding moments w other female fans bc they say things and all i can do is wrinkle up my nose and be like 'um well thats nice'.
also yeah frank & gerard are both probably straight and almost definitely never fucked but their stage gay shit was an anti-homophobia stand and did in fact have a very significant impact on me as a child. its important to me. sorry if thats lame to you but yeah it shaped me as a person to see two guys kissing on stage and getting booed and bottled for it it shaped me as a person to experience the reaction i got in catholic school reading the download 2007 review with the frerard kiss image it shaped me as a person to see them get called fags again and again and to take this stand anyway again and again. im very very serious about this i genuinely do not take their stage gay antics lightly and i am forever and ever grateful. it meant a lot. gay people in my kerrang magazine..
