I saw the post about how the cast of Apocalypse refer to each other in Japanese, and was intrigued. Just out of curiosity, how do they refer to themselves? Does anyone change throughout the game?
MASTERPOST OF JAPANESE PRONOUNS IN SMTIV/A (click below)
Tumblr media
Watashi 私 - gender neutral for formal context, in casual context it's typically only used by women while men sound stiff.
Navarre, Isabeau, Hikaru, Akira (Blasted Tokyo), Nozomi, Gaston, Toki, Stephen. Charon, Mastema, Danu, Maitreya, Adramelech, Medusa, Maitreiya (alongside Mitra-Buddha) and Satan.
Burroughs uses watashi in katakana ワタシ.
Tumblr media
Ware 我 - very formal and old-fashioned, mainly for males, particularly emphasizes one's very existence. It's used in fiction by immortal beings, deities and figures of great importance and power.
Ring of Gaea members, Kuebiko, Asmodeus, Tenkai, the Heralds, Yamato Takeru, Pluto, Odin, Lucifer, Vishnu-Flynn and YHVH.
Kaga, Hugo, Gabby and Merkabah switch between watashi and ware.
Odin when disguising as an elderly man uses washi ワシ - basically when you want a character to sound like a stereotypical old geezer. You know who else uses washi?
Tumblr media
Asahi uses atashi あたし - informal, very feminine, common in conversation among young women.
Inanna uses warawa ワラワ - archaic, humble, associated with women from samurai families. Xi Wangmu uses it in hiragana わらわ.
Tumblr media
Boku 僕 - masculine, perceived as humble, can be used for all ages but has undertones of a youth (or feeling like one), also used when casually giving deference; "servant" uses the same kanji (僕 shimobe).
Flynn (and his previous life), Jonathan (and Kiyoharu), Neutral Akira from flashbacks, Krishna and Shesha.
Okay so here’s the thing... Fujiwara uses watashi in SMTIV... but got retconned to boku in SMTIVA? How much are you guys betting that the writers literally just forgot? But well, he sports a killing fedora combination just like Krishna so I guess he definitely still has that trendy youth spirit.
Tumblr media
Ore オレ - informal, asserts masculinity, can sound rude depending on the context but conveys familiarity among friends or family.  Walter (and Kenji), Dagda, Koga Saburo and Hallelujah.
Issachar, K, Skins and Abe use ore but in kanji form 俺. Tayama switches between watashi and ore 俺.
Akira (Infernal Tokyo) uses a variant of 俺,  俺っち (orecchi), it’s for when you want to describe yourself in a funny or playful way. It may also have a cutesy tone. Not many men call themselves that.
And to finish it... 1) Please remember that pronouns aren’t a hard-set characteristic and some characters switch pronouns depending on context and who they are talking to, take the example of Skins once switching to ware when he wanted to put great emphasis on the strength on Hunters (putting emphasis on one’s own group tends to be the reason for why humans use ware in contrast to deities mostly referring to themselves as individuals). And let’s not forget the Akiras, entirely adapting how they express themselves according to the flow of the world.
2) My headcanon for Nanashi is that he uses ore オレ either from the getgo or at least he switches to it after he gets influenced by Dagda (but honestly, he has such a punk vibe as a way to contrast him with Flynn that I find hard to grasp that he’d use boku at least on the same reason goody two-shoes characters would do lol). Unless he's doing it in a sly way to get what he wants from other people...

On this episode of "I don't control the hyperfixation", my brain has decided to cling onto the song Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, particularly a recently released cover featuring Jonathan Young, Caleb Hayes, Thomas Sanders, and two other dudes whose voices make my spine tingle.
But like, this song makes me sad! Not in the crying way but in the "oh wow, this is deep and making me think about things" way.

SMTIV/A’s character addressment differences in localization
Tumblr media
さん -san gives politeness to whom the speaker is talking to, commonly for strangers, superiors and people older than the speaker. In some instances it tends to be equivalent to Mr/Mrs/Miss but it’s not as formal as it sounds in English.
Ashura-kai members TO Tayama Asahi TO Nikkari and Nozomi Hallelujah TO Nozomi and Isabeau Gaston TO Isabeau Akira and Blasted Tokyo citizens TO Kiyoharu
Ashura-kai members get irritated at Jonathan using the rude form of ‘you’ (貴様 kisama) with Tayama and yell at him to use the honorific. Similarly, Gaston enforces to be called “Gaston-san” by Asahi and Hallelujah and they only do so begrudgingly. In English it’s localized as Sir Gaston, sounding more pompous but funnily fitting his character and background probably even better.
Tumblr media
Asahi calls Isabeau “Isabeau nee-san”. 姉さん nee-san is a friendly term for older sister. It’s localized as Miss Isabeau, which transmits her admiration but unfortunately removes the warm tone.
Hallelujah calls Abe 兄貴 aniki, literally older brother but it has a double meaning as a honorable term used to refer to someone one considers a superior, within the context of the Yakuza. ‘Bro’ works fine.
In a scene, Hallelujah upon seeing Asahi shamelessly jumping around Isabeau couldn’t help but think if that was how people saw him when he was with Abe.
Tumblr media
ちゃん -chan expresses that the speaker has affection for the person, feels close to them and usually used for younger girls.
Nozomi TO Isabeau Isabeau and Nozomi TO Asahi
Tumblr media
殿 (どの) -dono is an honorific for showing respect used for people of high social status in the Heian Period whereas nowadays it’s only used in written form. It’s strongly associated with archaic/samurai-dialect.
Samurai TO Hope, K, Gabby, Hugo Hope and Gabby TO Hugo Isabeau TO Fujiwara Jonathan TO Akira and Kiyoharu Flynn (massacre) TO Nanashi
It’s social etiquette for Mikado officials to call their superiors with -dono. Walter predictably doesn’t follow it nor seems to care about remembering their faces.
Tumblr media
君 (くん) -kun is generally used by people of senior status addressing or referring to those of junior status, carries more respect than -chan and occasionally some emotional attachment. It can also be used for young males in general.
Fujiwara TO Nanashi and Akira Navarre TO his Samurai peers (Flynn, Walter, Jonathan and Isabeau) and to Asahi at the very end. Hugo TO Hope and Gabby Nozomi TO Nanashi and (one time she was asking for a favor) Gaston
Navarre and Hugo do it in a snobbish way while it’s more heartfelt for Nozomi and Fujiwara.
Tumblr media
公 (こう) -kou lit. Lord or Sir.
Flynn, Isabeau and Stephen TO Masakado Nozomi TO Tenkai
Tumblr media
様 (さま) -sama is for individuals of a higher rank than oneself. Appropriate usages include lords, divine entities and sometimes towards people one greatly admires.
Burroughs TO her Samurai user Gaea members TO Yuriko Shesha TO Krishna Adramelech TO Lucifer Odin and Flynn (Massacre) TO Dagda
As to not repeat myself for several minor characters, let’s just say that what deity someone is aligned to often decides whether they treat them with honorifics or not.
Tumblr media
Asahi and Hallelujah call both of their fathers oyaji 親父 (おやじ), pretty much an informal “my old man”. Asahi goes as far as calling him a ‘shitty geezer’ when she’s angry at not being allowed to be a Hunter. They are softer in English and just call them by ‘dad’.
Hallelujah calls Nanashi by the English word leader リーダー in both languages.
Dagda calls Nanashi kozou 小僧 (こぞう), its obsolete meaning being of a youngster that is training as an apprentice (usually in a religious context with monks being the common usage). There are many translations you could extract from it such as “little servant”, “errand boy”, “brat” or “kid” like how it got localized.
主 (あるじ) aruji meant the master of a castle in the context of medieval history.
Yamato Takeru TO Tayama Flynn (massacre) TO Nanashi as aruji-dono
Tumblr media
[He refers to both Dagda and Nanashi with -dono in the text but his voice says “Dagda-sama” instead. Probably a typo.]
Toki uses the same 主  kanji but pronounces as “ぬし (nushi)”-sama. In her context, it’s used by a woman to address a man with whom she is intimate, like a wife to her husband. So “master” in her case conveys a “my lover” insinuation.
You know who else uses 主 with yet another pronounciation?
Tumblr media
Fittingly for the Mikado setting, マスター (master) using exactly the pronounciation of the English equivalent despite being written in Japanese.

What if SMT4 was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe au?
I know it’s a weird idea but I couldn’t get it out of my head and wrote the basic gist of it since I never think I’ll actually have the time to write this especially with college.
The SMT4 movies:
(Precedes Avengers) Phase 1
The Cobalt Samurai-Basically the events of the first part of the game all the way up till them seeing the Underground which instead of Tokyo is New York in the MCU. Most of the superfluous side quests are shown through montage (Ex. The side quests that are a part of the challenges Navarre gives them.). At the movies midpoint the events of Kiccigiori village would transpire. The events of Kiccigiori are expanded on and a big chuck of the movie. Flynn is given more of a character before the events of Kiccigiori he feels a bit homesick and thinks of what he left behind. We see what actually happens to Flynn’s parents in the movie rather than it being left ambiguous like the game. For the first time the others see a strange flicker of gold in Flynn’s eyes which becomes clearer and continues throughout the movies. The finale is the Minotaur fight and then them gazing upon New York.
(The beginning takes place before Avengers but the middle and latter parts are mostly after the Avengers) Phase 2
The Cobalt Samurai: The Black Samurai- They leave the sky tower which disappears behind them seemingly leaving them trapped in New York. They continue the journey while they are pursued by a Hydra agent named Medusa. Nozomi first appears in this movie and helps them adjust to life on Earth. Nanashi and Asahi have a cameo. We also hear about gods starting to return. The movie is road trip esk. On their way to find the Black Samurai they run into familiar faces like Xi Wangmu,
the Ring of Gaea, and even have a brush in with the Avengers. The Avengers being led by the Hydra controlled Shield are told that they are planning to destroy Earth and must be stopped. This is the movie’s climax afterwards Lillith is captured and they bring her back to Mikado. Sister Gabby uses her powers to allow them to return. The movie ends with them learning of her returning to life after being executed.
In between movies
After Flynn and Isabeau leave in Civil War they go around helping people across Earth. Isabeau notices a strange golden light flickering in Flynn’s eyes as he starts to gain people’s hopes. His perspective on things starts to change and he starts thinking of the people of Earth more and growing attached to them. He was so focused on the Black Samurai before he had mostly ignored everything else. Without her he’s finally letting himself be enthralled with Earth’s splendor. They actually meet Nanashi and Asahi who are just kids right now.
(Takes place in alongside Infinity War) Phase 3
The Cobalt Samurai: Divided We Fall- After Flynn, Jonathan and Walter get sucked into the reactor they end up traveling to 2 parallel New York’s one of chaos and law. The law one is a dystopia not unlike 1984. The chaos one is marvel zombies. In the alternate worlds they meet alternate versions of the Avengers and fight Lucifer and Merkabah in their respective worlds. After their defeat Jonathan and Walter start to feel strange before they are sucked into the world of the white. The white try to drive Flynn into despair by revealing everything to him and that no matter what choices he makes the world will suffer and he will die. He is nearly taken over before Jonathan and Walter snap him out of it, surprising the white that they are here when they weren’t in the other worlds. They are more surprised when the ghost of Navarre becomes visible and gives Flynn his support. Jonathan and Walter with Lucifer and Merkabah’s powers will Isabeau into being transported to the white realm who also knocks some sense into Flynn. Flynn’s fellows declare that they’ll stay by him and defeat their fates together. Hope starts to overflow within him and Masakado’s katana materializes in his hands simply called “The Godslayer Sword”. Together they all defeat the white and the movie ends with the samurai returning to a post-Infinity War Mikado.
The movies that are altered:
(In Iron Man 2 their presence is mentioned in the movie as the supposed “Angels from the Heavens”.)
Thor-Their is an extra scene with Odin talking to Matrieya and telling him that he is no longer a part of the Divine Powers. Thor overhears this and questions Odin who refuses to elaborate. Matrieya offers Thor to join them and Odin drives him away.
(They are not present but are referenced in Avengers)
Thor: The Dark World-(This movie sucks) So, instead the one trying to get the reality stone is Matrieya who Thor fights. Some of the members of the Divine Powers appear in this movie and Krishna is foreshadowed. Thor finds out earlier about his father’s shady past, but this time it involves the Divine Powers who helped Odin conquer the 9 realms.
Captain America: Winter Soldier-They actually run into each other during the movie and they reveal everything about Tayama and Lillith. They were looking for the ‘face of true evil’ that Lillith told them about. That evil is being done by Hydra who Tayama is a part of in this version. They agree to help out Cap and expose Hydra from within Shield. They find out about all the very messed up things Hydra have done and realize Hydra is the true evil.
(The messiah is mentioned in Guardians of the Galaxy)
Guardians of the Galaxy vol2-Ego is in league with the Divine Powers.
Avengers: Age of Ultron-A young Hallelujah appears in this movie alongside Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. The samurai appear and fight the Ultron bots alongside the Avengers. Due to their meeting in their sequel they are acquainted with the Avengers. As things get hairy Nick Fury picks them up and has them join the fight. We find out that currently the were on their way back to Mikado to report to Shene Duke. In the end credits we see the archangels. Hallelujah doesn’t join the Avengers since he’s too young. Like Wanda and Pietro he gets his powers from being experimented on.
Captain America: Civil War-The samurai have completely split off now going their separate ways. We see a flashback of Jonathan and Flynn killing Lillith when Jonathan mentions it. They are dragged into the discussion at the beginning of the movie clearly not on speaking terms with each other especially after Walter hears that they killed Lillith. Isabeau awkwardly shuffled around feeling very nervous and out of place especially with all the tension. After the Sokova Accords are revealed Walter sides with Cap and Jonathan sides with Tony. Jonathan is surprised when Flynn doesn’t take a side simply not seeing it as their problem. Since it isn’t their world anyway. His head seems in the clouds after defeating Lillith and he walks out of the movie with Isabeau following behind them. From there the movie is the same, but with Walter and Jonathan included. They both start to question how they stand as those they favored flipped. Previously Jonathan would favor Cap and Walter would favor Tony. This whole conflict makes them realize things may not be as black and white as they thought.
(Flynn and Isabeau are referenced in Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is where it is revealed that they have been going around helping people.)
Thor: Ragnarok-Hella is a part of the Divine Powers and Shesha makes an appearance.
Avengers: Infinity War-Isabeau and Nozomi are in the movie on the Earth team. Isabeau reveals that her fellows have disappeared after going to the reactor. Flynn had convinced her to stay behind because she didn’t really have a stance in the conflict between Jonathan and Walter. Strangely, Flynn appears later in the movie but is acting awfully strange. Isabeau is transported to the white’s world right before the snap. After the snap he takes the gauntlet right off Thanos and Krishna reveals himself. Krishna explains that he allowed Thanos to do the snap on purpose to half the forces of law and chaos. His allies had been transported to another world when the snap happened; ‘Flynn’ even briefly disappeared before returning out of nowhere foreshadowing this. Flynn is revealed to be Shesha who fights Thanos. They are actually pretty even in power, but due to the Avengers wearing down Thanos before he gains the upper hand and defeats him. Krishna gives his salvation speech and Shesha flexes on everybody. He also mentions that his kalki, the true godslayer, will return to Earth.
Avengers: Endgame-Isabeau informs them of the snap. They actually appear after the time skip due to their trio back to Earth being wonky. After seeing even Mikado was ravaged Jonathan further questions his earlier values. We actually see Gaston who is fully grown to his age in Apocalypse. Many of their families were decimated or mostly gone after the snap. This whole thing brings the group even closer. Gaston joins them on their way back to New York. After arriving Toko appears trying to assassinate Flynn. The whole world thinking him and Shesha were the same and he betrayed them. Flynn defeats Toki and they try to convince her that it wasn’t Flynn who took the gauntlet. After her defeat Toki begrudgingly stands down and leaves, however claims she will kill Flynn one day which makes them nervous. They are also joined by Nozomi. Then they join up with the Marvel heroes who are wary at first, but Cap is able to realize that Flynn obviously wasn’t Shesha. They have to track down the Divine Powers who currently possess the stones. Krishna plans to use the stones to get to YHVH’s realm and have Flynn kill him. They fight the rest of the Divine Powers and it is revealed that Walter and Jonathan can transform into Lucifer and Merkabah. After their encounter in the other worlds an incomplete version of their power went into them. They fight Krishna and after seemingly winning Krishna slips into Flynn. Vishnu-Flynn is born and fights everyone after getting through to Flynn on the inside he breaks out and finishes Krishna. They take the infinity stones and restore everyone to normal. The samurai realize that there is a bigger threat and the universe is bigger than they imagined. Thus the samurai split again Flynn and Isabeau while Navarre and Walter depart to space while Jonathan returns to Mikado.
Spider-Man: Far From Home- Nanashi and Asahi are present. In the movie after one of the accidents Nanashi is revived by Dadga. It is also revealed Krishna is still alive and has only been sealed.
Pending waiting for more movies…

@midnighthallow tagged me in this 10 songs meme, where you list ten songs by ten different artists, and then tag 10 people (thank, and also sorry I've taken so long to do it lel)
I got no idea how to go about this, so I just checked my top titles playlist on deezer and list the first ten songs by different artists. I expect there to be a lot of kpop lol
(formatting on mobile is still a nightmare lol)
WANNABE- ITZY
IDOL - BTS
HIP - MAMAMOO
WHERE THE SKIES END - Starset
Her Sweet Kiss - Joey Batey
KILL THIS LOVE (Japan Version) - BLACKPINK
DUN DUN - Everglow
Crimson Bow & Arrow - Jonathan Young
You're Welcome - Dwayne Johnson
Hard Rock Hallelujah - Lordi
We are now in spot 17 of my playlist, as there's A LOT of Starset and BTS and Joey Batey's songs on the Witcher soundtrack. Also Wannabe places both first and second in this playlist, but frankly I thought Her Sweet Kiss was gonna be placed higher
Place 8 was actually Moon by Jin, but since he's a member of BTS I wasn't sure whether he counted as a singluar person also stream Moon this is a declaration of love sweeter than anything else on this planet and I will die on this mountain
tagging @bubblegumnebulaa, @tiefgelegte-hochstaplerin, @crazylittleastronaut, @artsyanimalcrossingstuff, @arwen-of-bajor, @morphituu
turns out I only know six people (seven including @midnighthallow omg I should tag u in more games I'm so sorry) that interact w my shit so spots 7-10 are whoever of them "fitness blogs" feels like it I guess?
lol

References in “Choose Your Faces Wisely”
My dæmon AU of Good Omens, Choose Your Faces Wisely, has a lot of references and allusions in it, and some people in the comments were curious, so I decided to write a “DVD extra” explaining them.
(Content warning ahead for sexual violence.)
Part 1.
In many cultures, including Japan, ancient Greece, and early Christianity, the butterfly is a symbol of the soul – the word “psyche,” from the Greek, means butterfly. It seemed right for the prototypical first human to have a dæmon that represented the soul in its purest form.
Eve’s goat dæmon has a dual meaning. In the Talmud, goats represent strength and endurance. But also, the term “scapegoat” has its origins in the Book of Leviticus, where a sacrificed goat is used to expunge the sins of a community. After the Fall, Eve is used as a scapegoat for humanity’s fall from grace.
Aziraphale laments privately that he wishes he were sure his nature wasn’t that of a lion. In Torah and Talmud, the lion represents majestic power and courage, but it also represents cruelty and oppression.
Part 2.
Crawly wears a flax skirt and shawl in Ur because that was the garb of upper class women at the time: a skirt and a loosely draped shawl as a top – you can see this in Sumerian art. It’s dark instead of black because black was almost impossible to achieve using the dyes of the time.
When Aziraphale says that the townsfolk of Sodom and Gomorrah were horribly rude to Gabriel and Sandalphon, he is understating the case. In Genesis, when two unnamed angels come to visit Lot, a mob gathers around the house and demand Lot give the angels to the mob to be gang-raped.
Lot’s wife, who is turned into a pillar of salt when she disobeys an angel’s order not to look back at Sodom and Gomorrah as she flees, has no name in Torah, but a midrash (a Hebrew commentary on Torah) names her Edith. In the Talmud, the owl is a bad omen, though for the Greeks the little owl (Athene noctua) is a symbol of Athena. Bumah is the Arabic term for the little owl.
Aziraphale creates a ewe dæmon for himself as a tribute to the great Jewish matriarch Rachel (which means ewe.) There is too much to say about Rachel to do her justice here, but she was a great woman and Aziraphale has good reason to admire her.
Part 3.
It’s kind of a delicate matter to pick out a dæmon for Jesus, but tbh I’m Jewish and I’m not especially theologically bothered about it. I chose a dove because 1) doves were a traditional sacrificial animal at the time; 2) doves are a symbol of hope because a dove brought an olive branch to the Ark, signaling the end of the Flood; and 3) a dove is often the symbol of the Holy Spirit, and while this is probably some kind of deep-cut Christian heresy,  it makes some kind of sense to think of the Holy Spirit as Jesus’s dæmon. She’s named Zipporah because it means “little bird” in Hebrew.
Crowley’s dæmon is named Lilith because... well, there’s entire dissertations to be said about Lilith, but in Jewish folklore she is Adam’s first wife, before Eve, who became a demon when she refused to submit to Adam. As a demon, she is a seductress, a mother of demons, and a baby-eater (or at least baby-killer.) There’s a whole tradition of badass feminist takes on Lilith as a woman who refuses patriarchal rule and is literally demonized for it, which is exactly the counter-narrative Crowley is referencing with Lilith, especially since she is canonically female-presenting in this part of the story. (Lilith is also symbolized by an owl in the Jewish tradition, linking her to my version of Edith; see above.)
Aziraphale’s sheepdog dæmon is a reference to Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want / He maketh me to lie down in green pastures [...]”
Part 4.
Aziraphale guises his dæmon as a she-wolf to gain respect in Rome because according to the origin myth of Rome, Romulus, the founder of Rome, and his brother Remus, were suckled as children by a she-wolf.
Part 5.
First of all, all due credit to the fic You, Soft and Only for giving me the idea of Aziraphale and Crowley meeting in medieval times as a nun and a noblewoman, respectively.
The bible verse Aziraphale quotes is Luke 12:6.
As I explained in the endnotes of the fic, everything I wrote about the choir of sparrows and the Tree of Souls comes from Kabbalah, the Jewish mystic tradition. The myth of the Tree of Souls originates from Isaiah 57:16, where God talks about “the souls that I have made.” In the Talmud, this was interpreted to mean that God has already made all of the souls that will ever exist, and keeps them in some kind of treasury or storehouse. The Kabbalists ran with that and created this beautiful myth about a tree that drops souls on the Earth like ripe fruit, and a choir of sparrows that sings a song for every new soul. Crowley is really the one supernatural entity we meet in Good Omens who recognizes the value of individual human life, and thinks each soul worth its own celestial song.
I chose a swallow form for Edith mainly because of Psalm 84: “Yea, the sparrow hath found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at thine altars, O Lord.” Here, sparrows and swallows together represent righteous souls who flourish at God’s altars.
Also, in case anyone missed this subtext, when Crowley strokes Lilith’s wing and says it reminds her of something, but cuts herself off, she was going to say “It reminds me of my wings before I Fell.”
Finally, when Aziraphale has her impassioned spiel about Edith, what she’s carefully not quite saying about Lot is that when the mob threatened to gang-rape the angels in his home, he offered up his daughters for the mob to gang-rape instead.
Part 6.
Salamanders are, traditionally, immune to hellfire.
In Torah, leopards are pointed out as dangerous, swift, and cunning. But as it is said in Jeremiah 13:23, “Can a leopard change his spots?” Gabriel is asserting his power by manifesting a leopard dæmon, but he is also showing his immutability and resistance to change.
Part 7.
Naamah means “pleasant” in Hebrew, but it is also the name of a female demon, according to Kabbalah.
Edith is a rooster in this part because: 1) in the Kabbalistic tradition, the rooster is a messenger of God who calls people to their morning prayers and supposedly banishes the demons of the night; 2) in the Talmud, the rooster is considered vain, impudent, and lustful because of his fine colors and his relentless pursuit of hens; 3) roosters were supposedly not allowed in the Temple in Jerusalem because they eat food from the ground that might make them unclean (a reference to the scene with Aziraphale and Gabriel) and 4) a rooster is also called a cock, and sometimes Aziraphale likes to show Crowley his cock in the back of the bookshop.
Part 8.
I already explained Edith’s serpent form in the endnotes of the fic, though I will add that serpents, like roosters, are considered unclean because they eat food from the dirt (sullying his celestial body with gross matter.) They are also considered a symbol of jealousy, as the serpent supposedly stirred up jealousy in the relationship between Adam and Eve (and I would argue that jealousy is a defining characteristic of Aziraphale.)
Aziraphale’s quote “Easier than air with air, if spirits embrace” is from Milton’s Paradise Lost, a major influence on Good Omens.
King David loved his friend Jonathan. People have been reading a love story between these two men for as long as there’s been a Bible. It’s hard not to, with passages like “Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.” (Samuel 18) I reference the great Jewish songwriter Leonard Cohen in Aziraphale’s description of David and Jonathan touching each other’s dæmons. His song “Hallelujah” is about King David, among other things, and he sings, “Your faith was strong but you needed proof / You saw her bathing on the roof / Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you.”
