Reviewed: @bigfinish’s #DoctorWho Classic Doctors New Monsters Volume 4 – Broken Memories
The fourth volume of Big Finish’s Classic Doctors New Monsters takes the range to a new level, this time solely focusing on three Steven Moffat creations. They’re so unique in different ways, they don’t disappoint. And isn’t it a funny coincidence that the anthology was released a few days before the exciting announcement of Moffat returning to write an episode for Season 1 (or as I prefer to…

Winter of the Harmony Shoal Chapter 4: some slow progress?
Kate woke first to a dark silence. Instead of setting light upon the place she decided to check the time: she'd only been asleep an hour so best not to needlessly wake Osgood. Still, awake as she was, continued research was reasonable. Ignoring pleas of drooping, wilted eyelids she made her way over to a desk and started again to look into UNIT's activities. Between each word she drank heavily from a delirious cocktail of exhaustion, stolen by glimpses of sleep. No new conclusions were forming. The data instead preferred the form of incoherent eddies and enigmatic whirlpools forecasting drought or flood.
This psychadellic display blurred, blended. Perhaps the application of her method was at fault. Her fingers shifted uneasily, vaguely meandering towards some half unknown solution. Serendipitously, it brought her to an unwanted plan of plausible character, guessing at the financial records of the company. Osgood must've considered this already but all the same. Oddly, the buildings, especially windows, had been inexplicably more expensive at the New York complex; considerably more than the comparable Washington site. Although the funding was untraceable, tiredness could ignore it as commonplace enough. The trouble, she proposed as distraction from drift into sleep, was deteining the irregularities that weren't standard business practises.
Osgood woke, surprised by the pitch night of the room so reflex turned on the light. Startled awake, she scrutinised the circumference of the room to find Kate piled carelessly behind her laptop. She chided amiably 'You really should've slept. How long were you up researching?'
Nominally awake now she said, 'I think I've found something. I was looking over the financial records last night.'
'You need to sleep Kate,' Osgood persisted in a lower tone, coloured with concern. 'Was there anything unusual?'
Kate related to her all that she had found, eveidencing it with a display of the figures. Confoundedly, they had changed. She was sure of it. Aghast she stated, 'It wasn't like this before.'
Osgood suggested they verify with some pastings in her commonplace book. They both glanced expectantly at the scrappy, disorderly thing finding proof of Kate's discovery- bolstered by this transparent obfuscation, conformation of its importance surfaced.
'Do we have any other unalterable copies of information?'
'A few but they might have been retracted before I got them. We know they're monitoring everything so we need to be cautious.'
A profound difficulty of progress swallowed them, digesting a quantity of their optimism. They'd found something only to be left stranded without course for further action.
'Since they're interfering and watching, we might as well do the same. I should be able to access CCTV. It might be worth it to try to work out their plan or just learn more about them.'
'Well, it's no brilliant eleventh hour miracle but it's a good idea. They don't seem overly confrontational, which won't be a help.
'We have a whole equipment information and all of it amounts to nothing,' Kate vented frustratedly.
'It should help us work out what they're doing.'
'And what they've already done,' she completed in a sigh.
'Anyone at UNIT is in possible danger.' Looking at Kate's strategic disapproval, she said, 'I know. . But we have to do so Something. On our own we can't do much and it's putting others at risk.'
'Don't harangue me. I know how fraught this is,' she stated staunchly. 'Getting others involved is just another risk. We can't even be sure it's them.'
The cave they were based in was practically Neolithic, nothing more than a barricade of safety. 'What about someone now part of UNIT? We can't live like this, you can't. We already need to do out for food and both of us have been to obsessed with the case to notice. A friend maybe?' she pitched in a rising tone.
'You're right,' she conceded. 'I'll look into it this evening. For now, you can get the food and I'll watch the CCTV.'
'I know you're getting to ignore it. It's not like I can't tell. I'll go get the food then.' She made pause then stepped across rough, uncarpeted floor blanketed in unidentifiable detritus to retrace their entry.
'Goodbye,' Kate called after her, wishing the conversation had beaten more favourably. At least she could find escape in work agian. Her eyes skimmed across several feeds of live footage, her eyelids hardening into shells.
When she rose again, a frenzy immediately flooded her. Hands. Computer. Body. Keyboard. Mission. Everything. What? Asleep? How long? A flurry of haphazard movement gave answer- it had only been a few minutes. Only a few minutes. Without pause, her attention rapidly drifted toward the screen. A scientist was slowly slipping a handkerchief down his rigid face to remove a blue substance. Was it from the brain? The autopsy hadn't explained how the mind and body were kept stable. A preservative? What would knowing it prove beyond theory?
Osgood burst in hectically, bursting past the door. She gave Kate a wan, reassuring smile then, putting down some bags of food, proceeded, 'Fresh air. That's what this place is lacking. I got a takeaway, your favourite I think.' She looked on gratefully, met by a minute, idiosyncratic expression of gratefulness. 'Have you thought about anyone to stay with?'
'Not yet. I hadn't expected you'd be back so early,' Kate managed without showing tiredness.
'We're in London, not a countryside bunker. I've been gone almost an hour.'
'So you have.' She blinked the realisation. Her grip of time slipped. 'I've only been able to look at some footage. I found something. Look.' She pointed with her best imitation of interest at an acutely entgralling clip of the meagre trickling she had spotted.
As she ambled towards the monitor she asked, 'Did you manage any sleep while I was gone?'
'Not really,' Kate said. 'None.'
'How much,' she questioned knowingly.
'Hardly a few minutes.'
'You need to sleep tonight. I can stay up researching. For now we can eat.'
Days elongated into weeks passing like this, uneventful and unhealthy. The progression of autumn went on all the same, in spite of being unobserved. At this state of deterioration, Osgood secretly pursed aid of several kinds until she at last decided she'd have to talk about it directly with Kate.
They sat opposite at a roughly fashioned table: a legless desk propped up by the remains of some shelves. It was the Osgood's best recreation of normality. Between them, a connecting light was the sole prevenattive taken against darkness.
Attempting directed small talk, Osgood began, 'How's everyone coping with you being gone?' Any atmosphere gave a hearty shattering; it was not her preferred suit.
'UNIT seems to be doing tolerably well. If you could call it that.' She waited a fraction of a moment. 'You mean family though, I suppose. Nobody to miss me there I'm afraid,' she said with slight resentment.
'Don't you have a girlfriend,' came on inquisitively.
'I used to. What about you?' she asked with some interest.
'I wasn't seeing anyone. No close family either. We can't keep on like this, though.'
Somewhat disjointedly, Kate tried to distract, 'We could get The Doctor.'
'That's a good idea,' she said with mock tentativeness. 'He might be able to help.'
'They do tend to cause quite a bit of chaos. Still, he could be our best hope for something on this scale.'
'He's not that bad. But none of this helps summon him. It's not like they answers their phone,' she said disappointedly.
'There are a few ways. A while back we developed some crystals, they contained Huon particles I think, that could attravt the TARDIS. We'd need to be prepared for any incarnation. There should be a few prototypes we can access.'
'We should still be able to get access to them so I don't think it's a bad idea. They might be untested but we have no wealth of solutions,' she said hopefully.
'I can get it while you monitor the operation. We should have some radios here so we can stay in contact undetected. It's not like to work, though.'
'I'll go,' Osgood advised. 'We can get there by nightfall if we leave now but tomorrow would be better so you can get some sleep.'
NB: The 'chapters' seem to have become senselessly shorter so in retrospect this and the next will be more of a work in progress in terms of structure. My first draft has an ending I wasn't particular happy with but I've mostly kept it for want of any alternative and so this problem is no better for it (I cannot stand to read my own writing, certainly not more than avoidable.) A bit might be obviously a first draft. Also, the ending of this one may be entirely changed to fit the rest of the story. I think I might take a break from this story, hopefully not indefinitely though. I will be writing still but I think I want to try to be a bit more experimental.

Here lies the sister post to my resource list.
Under the cut, you'll find a list of regional, primarily queer-focused groups to donate to, if you have the means.
If you've ever accused us of being beyond help, or have ever said we should be sawed off into the ocean, here's your chance to help the many helpers trying to make the southeast a better place--those that always go conveniently ignored in such conversations.

SWORDTEMBER DAY 24: CORAL
Reef’s Harmony, of cracked coral and swimming shoal 🐠🐟 "A tool of death, lost to the deep. It fought in ancient wars, passed from mother to daughter, felt the hot coat of blood on its body. Now, it is a home to fish, crustaceans, and thousands of beasts smaller than the eye can see. Whoever it was that dropped it, they must still be looking."

Welcome to the Thirdverse! A next gen set after the events of MLP:FiM where the Mane 6, growing into new adult lives, begin to drift apart. In the process, one by one, under difficult circumstances, they find themselves going against their own Elements of Harmony~
Twilight Sparkle Wife of Sunburst. Mother of Celestial Blessing and Bismuth Sun. She rules Equestria from Canterlot, quite far from all her friends who she attempts to stay in touch with. But despite this attempt she has also actively betrayed the values of friendship, and although she truly thought it was for the best at first, she carries deep shame over what she did.
Applejack Wife of Sugar Belle. Mother of Blackberry Maple, Orchard Sunrise, and Fireside Jam. Currently the new matriarch of Sweet Apple Acres after Granny Smith’s passing, her life hasn’t changed that much materially as she has stuck pretty close to her home roots. However, she has been less-than-honest with her own kin, and as much as she tries to act like everything is fine and dandy, deep down she knows she can’t hide the truth forever.
Rarity Wife of Filthy Rich. Stepmother of Diamond Tiara and later the mother of Princess Cut. She got the life many fillies dream of: married to a wealthy pony and a very successful businessmare on her own. She still lives in Ponyville but never stays in one place between her boutique connections and her husband’s wide network. She wants to make a good impression on the elite ponies and do right by her stepdaughter, but this will put her generous spirit to the test.
Rainbow Dash Eventual wife of Big Macintosh. Former partner of Svengallop, Double Diamond, Hoo’far, and Short Fuse. Mother of Evergreen Blaze, Moonray Chill, Lantern Glow, Strawberry Breeze, and later Earth Day. She has been more or less wandering all over Equestria as she grapples with multiple failed relationships and a damaged view of herself, especially as she lives with the crushing regret of a choice she made that went against her loyal nature.
Fluttershy Wife of Pharynx and Quibble Pants. Mother of Tiger Lily, Daisy Wasp, and Fairyfly. She lives in the Changeling Kingdom as their new Duchess and feels fulfilled to be surrounded by such a beautiful kingdom and so many friendly and welcoming creatures. The changelings have been nothing but kind to her and her family and she strives to show them the same kindness they showed her, while also struggling with being kind to herself.
Pinkie Pie Wife of Luna and Tempest Shadow. Mother of Sunny Sweet Dreams, Laffy Taffy, and Galatea Candyheart. Lives in Silver Shoals where the princesses are retired, but won’t hesitate to hop on a train, boat, or hot air balloon to see any of her friends around the world! She’s literally the ray of sunshine of her family, with two wives who can be gloomy for reasons she can’t understand, and three kids who are going through their own struggles. It’s still her life’s mission to make everypony smile, but that’s proving to be harder than she thinks. Will she be able to maintain her faith in joy and laughter?

Crackpot dw headcannon : the harmony shoal corporation (body snatching brains from husbands of river song and return of doctor Mysterio and others) is a schism of the spinward corporation's pool who wanted to ascend to pure thought without loosing their individuality in the process and at some point in their history developed time travel and set operation in the post war 21st earth century (a different 21st century than the one in Wich the butler institute layed the foundation of that technology)

Winter of the Harmony Shoal Chapter 3: time to regroup
That evening, Osgood was attempting to make herself something new but such plans quickly fled as the ingredients amassed into some subversive force. Defeated, though not altogether too much annoyed, she resorted to preparing something simpler instead. She was in her apartment, a small, messy thing cramped intimately with decoration and a good distance from the Thames. It was a comfortable, if shabby, affair furnished lavishly, dimly lit, almost alive.
Once she had eaten, this wonderfully pleasant, unplanned meal she glanced toward her phone, noticing a new message; this took her by surprise, a relatively misanthropic wont having afforded an affable seclusion. Briefly, her attention diverted itself to a ramshackle stacking of books that she stared blankly at for a few minutes as her mind panicked slightly.
She theorised liberally about all manner of esoterica from work, especially the recent Harmony Shoal stuff. A flurry of speculation discarded ideas with as little reluctance as it took them up; facts were blatantly connected but reason unapparent. Truant truth was needed to explain those very strangest of circumstances that could steal away a brain leaving behind only a translucent trail, that had gripped Kate so.
On reading the text a flash flood of panic susbsumed her with worry for her friend, releasing her after its course. While Kate was struggling presently, she realised, the severity of danger would be rather heightened inspiring her own concerned desire for action. The sparse body spoke of urgency but this left her little to act on. Therefore, she could do little but linger sleepless and dispirited. Soon reaching the uneasy compromise of slumber that hardened her resolve to be of use the next day.
She woke early in an effort to be of use. Speculating the cause of this led her to make copies of most potentially useful UNIT files. She had to see Kate but the agreed time was hours yet. What could she have found? How was she? The text had been sent only shortly after they'd run into eachother so the Harmony Shoal case was a likely cause but it was best not to be too certain of any unproven hypothesis. She packed for the journey, ensuring to bring her laptop, a spare inhaler, anything even possibly useful- a first aid kit, some eccelctic paper documents, an old unused pocket diary, anything. She sat still for the eternity of a split second. Despite the early hour, she left in agaitation and grabbed a book to read in wait.
Unusually, Kate had been late if only by a few minutes or so. They sat adjacent on a plank of damp oak supported by dark legs of wrought iron. The smell of petrichor faintly coated all.
'Every night and every morn some to misery are born,' Kate stated.
'Every morn and every night some are born to sweet delight, every morn and every night some are born to sweet delight, every morn and every night some are born to endless night,' came the reply.
'Sorry about that, had to be sure it was you. The shibboleth is from a poem, you know, Blake but I know it from Agatha Christie. It's her favourite of hers.'
'You're trying to distract me or maybe even yourself from whatever you found. It's one of my favourites too.'
'Of hers or in general?'
'Both'
'I had to check because Harmony Shoal seem able to infitrate by replacing people, unnoticed. Remember that scar tissue you noticed,' she admitted.
'That's quite a lot. You're sure?'
'Absolutely. In fact, based on the fluid you found, I think it might be a biological mechanism.'
'Have you got everything you need from The Towe? We'll need some other location to return to after this.'
'You're right, sorry: I haven't been thinking straight. Someone trying to follow me here was a concern.'
Unhesitatingly, Osgood queried 'Have you got anything you need from home? It's probably best not to go back.'
'Some people were there last night so I haven't but there's nothing much important.'
'Do you have enough pills?' she quickly asked.
'I'll manage.'
Uncontented, Osgood looked through her bag to produce a packet and thrust it toward her. 'I've got some, you gave me them. If you haven't had any this morning, I have some water and biscuits so you can now.' She recieved them after a look shaded by worry.
'Thank you,' she responded to this gesture of care. 'I tried to get anything useful onto a USB stick but there wasn't enough time.'
'I've already got whatever I could find. We should go now; got anywhere in mind.'
'It's not great but there's a place near the docks. We can go more and share more information later,' she decided readily.
In a clearing of thick, unpruned trees, Kate informed her, 'Not far now. I should tell you, the enterance is a bit complicated. There was a proper way in but that was filled in decades ago. ' They approached a non-descript statue that glared with hard ivory eyes. Kate held a steady, secure gait as they walked past, while her companion looked about, curious as a herpetologist. It was not exactly the image of London. An increasingly convuluted path was enshrined by corridors of layered vegetation. Kate completed a series of motions before finally putting aside a large, rock-like door. It was still well over a few meters away but the drowning tension seemed to have fallen seveal orders. A new, ambivalent silence accompanied them down corridor after corridor until they arrived in an underwhelmingly unkempt room.
Invasive weeds tore up the acutely moulded paneling, exposing a firm, stony foundation. They viciously clawed their way up the lowest inches of the slightly irregular walls. I reeked of confined age, equally visible by the paint-stripped walls. A single remote corner was furnished, lonely as a sole mourner. Wherever they were was fortified against sound, dampening the outside world and insulated from the deepest of winter.
'It's not exactly an oasis,' Kate acknowledged, 'but it should be safe. There's no information about this emergency location in the UNIT database. As far as anyone knows, this whole place was filled in years ago.'
'It is quite dishevelled, although a somehat appealing abandonment,' she observed.
'I'm going to find out who was surrounding my house last night to get some estimate of their influence. See if you can find anything new based on what we know now.' Each adorned the room with their efforts, leaving belongings strung messily about the place.
Abruptly, Kate pronounced discovery that, 'From what I've found, it sounds like it was the Volunteer Fire Department. The organisation seems at odds with itself so infiltrating them is no great indication of power. Found anything interesting?'
Merilly they exchanged notes, ideas, thoughts freed from the danger if only by beckoning it closer, while Osgood glanced over her commonplace book. She realised over a few scrupulous reviews of the latest few pages, 'There slogan is Here to Open Your Minds.' After a brief, bleak laugh she continued, 'A bit on the nose. Though from their actions I'd say they're quite good at knowing how much to reveal. It seems anything remotely useful was removed from the file.'
'I suppose we know where not to look. Lucky then,' she smiled with a discreet pride, 'I still have access to most UNIT.' She motioned Osgood to an arrangement of numbers and letters, nearly without refrain, that formed logs. 'We should be able to look for anomalies, any changes. I'm going over everything since when the offices were shut down.
'In the meantime, we ought to look back over what we've done. See if we've missed anything.'
Osgood countered that, 'It's already getting late: just getting here took a while and we've been here ages. We should rest for now.'
Kate posited, 'It's fine. You can go to sleep and I'll just keep on for now.' Noting Osgood appealing expression she reassured, 'I'll be fine.'
'You need sleep too,' she replied with an articulation of care that Kate momentarily found as ineffable as the inevitable.
'Okay,' she conceded.
'Good night, have a good sleep,' wished both, each mutually assuring the other they would survive this. Thhe air was thick, its water content having gone minutely rancid over years of near disuse that made sleep an effort.

Mer night can produce a soft trilling melody that sounds like singing. It’s very soothing to listen to, and sounds vaguely like a human at times despite being a wordless harmony. He can mask it as a humans singing if he wants to pull a siren. Though it’s mostly used by his specific species type to soothe members of the shoal. He’s kinda embarrassed by it so he doesn’t use it often but he ended up singing to mer blacky after a particularly awful dream. Mer blacky asked him where he learned it from and he vaguely explained that it’s something usually shared between those in the same shoal. Mer blacky then asked mer night if he considers him apart of his shoal, and he just blushed and told him to shut up X3
Shoal is the word for like a group of squids
