Single White Female (1992)

Roommates, amirite?  Reeling from the discovery of her fiancé-to-be’s infidelity and equally terrified of living alone, Allison Jones makes the choice to sublet.  It’s an under-the-table affair, just an agreement between two people.  The off-the-record nature of this arrangement makes for some nerves as the two women try to dodge prying neighbors.  But before too long, the other aspect of this secret agreement becomes the bigger risk.  Hedra Carlson doesn’t exist on the lease agreement, but that’s not the only way she’s a phantom.  Insinuating herself into Allie and Sam’s relationship, she plays the clingy roommate while speedrunning the sociopathic playbook.  Need to throw down an anchor?  Get a puppy without the other roommate’s consent.  Upset that said puppy isn’t giving you the attention you want from it, further enflaming feelings of rejection from those around?  Kill it.  At every turn, Hedy weaves a web around those in her circle, though she’s not as charming as she seems to think she is, or wants to be.  Jennifer Jason Leigh plays the role with understated, flattened affect, a fury simmering behind her eyes even as she preys on the sympathy of Allie.  There’s a further wrinkle to Hedy’s psychosis, lingering grief over her deceased twin finding a new vessel in her jealousy about Allie’s perceived success.  Hedy makes herself over to look like this woman she views as glamorous and better, both playing on her own Freudian desires and crafting the perfect crime through her double life taking on Allie’s identity.  Perhaps most chilling about this is just how far Hedy is able to go, making bolder and bolder moves all while Allie convinces herself that it would be wrong to turn her away.

I think my top three were Welcome to the Monkey House which was short stories by Kurt Vonnegut, Bones Beneath My Skin because TJ Klune writes so gorgeously, and The Skull by Jon Klassen just because it was slightly unhinged and I love kids books like that. Also 7 (7! Like holy cow) were kink novels by my writer friend that I am an arc reader for that were just absolutely perfect.
