Shirley Alston Reeves (born June 10, 1941), born Shirley Owens, is a soul singer who was the main lead singer of the hit female singing group the Shirelles. The Shirelles consisted of classmates of hers from Passaic High School, New Jersey: Doris Kenner Jackson, Addie "Micki" Harris McPhadden, and Beverly Lee. Her strong, distinctive voice meant that she was the natural choice for their main lead singer, though Jackson was also featured as the lead on several songs as well. Her nephew, Gerald Alston is the lead singer of The Manhattans. She enjoyed a string of hits with the Shirelles throughout. She left the Shirelles to begin a solo career, initially recording under the name "Lady Rose". She recorded an album entitled With A Little Help From My Friends, after the hit song by the Beatles, which featured members of the Flamingos, the Drifters, Shep and the Limelites, the Five Satins, the Belmonts, Danny & the Juniors, Herman's Hermits and La La Brooks of the Crystals. The Shirelles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She performed on the Doo Wop 51 special, and continues to tour under the name 'Shirley Alston Reeves and her Shirelles'. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Cen942PL2C77CjfgmbqpGl-rTJ19W33noUFJzc0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hero to Zero: A History of Plastics
Written by Penny Sparke
The story of plastics starts in the nineteenth century with the patents for a number of semisynthetic materials. The aim was to bring luxury goods—previously made of expensive, handcrafted, natural materials—within the reach of the socially mobile nouveau riche. The new products—jewelry, pin boxes, hair ornaments, picture frames, mirrors, combs, and many more—brought unbridled pleasure to their owners through conspicuous consumption, ownership, and the associated social status.
(left) Birdcage (China), ca. 1901; Made by Liang Qichang (dates unknown); Buffalo horn (vertical bars), lacquered bamboo (horizontal hoops bracing bars), ivory, tortoiseshell (with substrate of silver leaf on vermillion on wood), cedar wood, various metals (brass, possibly paktong, white metal), jade, glazed porcelain; H x diam.: 86 x 39.4 cm (33 7/8 x 15 1/2 in.); Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; Gift of Mrs. Herman Frasch, 1916-12-1-a/f. (right) Comb (Peineta) (Cuba), 19th century; Shaped and pierced tortoiseshell; H x W x D: 26 x 23.5 x 3 cm (10 1/4 x 9 1/4 x 1 3-16 in.); Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; Gift of Belmont Freeman, for the family of Maria Magdalena Kjellesvig González de Freeman, 2018-41-1
Now in the early twenty-first century, the multiple plastics that surround us on a daily basis are more likely to evoke guilt than pleasure. The painfully slow degradability of the fully synthetic plastics and the complex plastic blends from which our running shoes, shopping bags, computers, food packaging, picnic plates, automobile components, and a myriad of other items in daily use are constructed, have engendered huge environmental problems. With less than a fifth of the total amount being recycled, the rest is left to inflict untold damage on the planet’s animal and plant life.
That dramatic turnaround in attitudes toward plastics happened in little over a century. It mirrored the general shift that occurred with the growing realization that the rampant consumerism that had driven social change and economic growth from the nineteenth century onward had a flipside, and that, in acquiring our material comforts, we were inadvertently destroying the natural environment on which we depend for our survival. From the 1960s onward, partly through writings such as Rachel Carson’s 1962 book Silent Spring, which alerted us to the growing quantities of toxins in our environment, and Vance Packard’s study of two years earlier, The Waste-Makers, an outcry against built-in obsolescence, an awareness gradually grew about the damaging effects of the double-edged sword that was consumer capitalism.
Plastics have not always been the enemy, however. During the greater part of the twentieth century, we welcomed plastic products into our homes, offices, and cities on a massive scale. They were carriers of the message of modernity and they brought with them a link to the progressive world of advanced technology and the wonders of science. The widespread acceptance that they received was largely a result of the forms bestowed on them by industrial designers. Unlike handworked wood, for example, which can take on only certain forms, plastics lack an innate shape or color and have a fluidity that gives them a huge flexibility.
Before they became the heroes of the modern world, however, plastics had performed a range of other roles. Natural plastics—amber, horn, wax, shellac (from the “lac” beetle), gutta-percha (from the Palaquium tree), ivory, and tortoiseshell, for example—went back to antiquity. Amber, usually used for jewelry, was mentioned by the ancient Greek Pytheas, in the fourth century BCE. Natural plastics were joined in the mid-nineteenth century by the semisynthetics, among them vulcanite (rubber with sulphur added), which was widely used for imitation jet jewelry; casein (made from milk curd), which took on many shapes and colors and which was also used widely as a substitute for more precious materials; and celluloid, once again a favorite substitute, but the properties of which (apart from its flammability) also made it the perfect material for billiard balls and photographic and cinematic film. Semisynthetics acted either as stand-ins for natural materials or as utilitarian substances facilitating other new developments. When the first fully synthetic phenolic polymer—Bakelite—appeared in 1907, it followed the latter route, becoming the perfect material for the new electricity industry.

Kravis II, 2014-10-1
All that was to change in the 1920s, when industrial designers began to transform plastic products into magical objects. Emerging from the commercial backgrounds of advertising and window display, the new American designers—Norman Bel Geddes, Raymond Loewy, and Harold Van Doren among them—already knew how to meet the symbolic requirements of consumers. They created meanings and identities for a range of new plastic products emanating from the new technology-driven industries. In the words of Jeffrey Meikle, “Americans viewed plastics as miracle materials from which to shape the contours of a desired future.”[i] Raymond Loewy’s 1929 redesign for the Gestetner duplicator boasted a new Bakelite body-shell, which brought the object’s mechanical parts together into a single visual entity. Bakelite was soon joined by a range of new phenolic plastics in a rainbow of colors, among them Catalin, which was used for toys and jewelry, and a number of urea formaldehyde resins, among them Vinylite, which also introduced new possibilities for colored products. While plastics and design developed a natural synergy with each other, the former were also the perfect vehicle for the 1930s product style called “streamlining”—a modern aesthetic applied to automobiles, refrigerators, and a wide range of smaller mass-produced plastic objects with bodyshells, such as radios—as its rounded forms meant that products could be removed from their molds with ease.
Child’s Chair, 1964; Designed by Marco Zanuso (Italian, 1916–2001) and Richard Sapper (Italian, 1932–2015); Manufactured by Kartell S.p.A. (Milan, Italy); Polyethylene
Plastic products suffered a setback in the immediate post–World War II years when, for a few years, consumers looked to the comfort provided by traditional goods and the authenticity of natural materials. It was a short-lived interlude, however, as designers once again came to the rescue of plastics and rehabilitated the materials as the symbols, once again, of modernity, progress, and optimism. That rehabilitation took place not in the United States, but in Italy, where an indigenous plastics industry had developed in the 1930s when economic nationalism prevailed. Postwar, through the visual innovation of its products, Kartell, the manufacturer of plastic products, became preeminent in the field, in 1953 employing designer Gino Columbini, who made mundane products like colanders and lemon squeezers look like enticing items of modern sculpture. The main challenge to Italian designers was to make large items, such as chairs, completely out of plastics. Kartell took on designer Marco Zanuso to address that task and in 1964 the company launched a polyethylene child’s chair (above), which soon inspired others to follow suit, among them Vico Magistretti, who created the Selene chair out of ABS plastic for Artemide in 1967, and Joe Colombo, who designed chair model 4867 for Kartell in the following year. The minimalist aesthetic they developed, which featured sleek surfaces, organic curves, and bright colors, became the aesthetic for modern plastic products in the 1960s and returned to the materials the reputation for high quality and modern sophistication that they had previously enjoyed in the U.S. in the 1930s.
Model 4860 Stacking Side Chairs, 1967; Designed by Joe Colombo (Italian, 1930–1971); Manufactured by Kartell S.p.A. (Milan, Italy); Injection-molded ABS plastic, rubber; H x W x D: 72 × 43.3 × 43 cm (28 3/8 × 17 1/16 × 16 15/16 in.); Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; Gift of Dr. Herbert Appel, 1986-115-1,2
The oil crisis of 1973 marked the end of the easy accessibility of plastics. That decade also saw the beginning of a popular concern with environmental issues, among them the release of toxins into the atmosphere, the depletion of natural resources, and the excessive production of damaging waste materials, including plastics, which were slow to degrade. While efforts were made to ensure that they could be recycled, the quantities in which they were used for everyday purposes, such as packaging, made that challenging. By the 2000s, the need for symbolism in everyday goods had been overtaken by an interest in ecology, and it became clear that plastics could not, like natural materials, return to the earth from which they had come. As a consequence, plastics ceased to be the miraculous messengers of modernity and became the enemy. Our relationship with them is unlikely to ever be the same again.

@wuunderstruck here’s my rambles of plots for our muses pls lov me:tm:
╰ ☾ ⛧⌒*。 Cooper Velasquez
( ETHAN MCDONALD, Dylan O’Brien, 23 ) OH MY GOD HE’S A MECHANIC AND I JUST AGGRESSIVELY i was gonna go in order BUT I WANT A TPOSE AND DOBRI BROTP FROM WHEN THEY WERE KIDS AND THEY WORK IN THE SAME MECHANIC SHOP / ETHAN’S SHOP AND JUST them working for hours on end and shooting the shit then going out for drinks after work nd talkin about girls and hard jobs or talk about old cars they wanna buy and flip and just fuckin brodown towntown listen i just got so stoked when i saw cooper was a mechanic pls love me
╰ ☾ ⛧⌒*。 Addison Cohen
( ALEX HENNY, Herman Tommeraas, 21 ) ugh college bros or a cute lil ship where they’re in all the same classes basically and Alex picks her up in the mornings from her dorm or house with coffee and they sit next to each other in every class and shoot the shit and then Alex convincing her to go to a frat party where they wind up just sitting up on the roof talkin about school & where they’re gonna be in ten years & their lives & ITS JUST A CUTE COLLEGE SHIP
╰ ☾ ⛧⌒*。 Cameron Hayes
( XAVIER MARTIN, Nat Wolff, 23 ) OK SO I CAN TOTALLY SEE THEM DOIN SKETCHY STUFF TOGETHER because a few of their things line up besides hacker but with how loner-y Xavier is I can imagine him being a hacker with or against Cameron??? ANd they can either be squad and late nights tryin’a hack into something or little shitty hacking games and they have this abandoned house where they meet up and we can even go full Mr. Robot where they’re tryin’a take down the government
( NOLAN GRAND, Aaron Tveit, 25 ) I saw good punches and i was like oo boi either they hate eachother nd fight all the time or they bros and they go out and get into fights with other people / they’re eachothers wingmen like gimmie those VIBES BRO
╰ ☾ ⛧⌒*。 Fallon Birch
( MAGS O’SULLIVAN, Saoirse Ronan, 23 ) Ok the simple ‘feeling of beginning again’ was enough for me for these two bc Mags is the feeling of the first day of summer so I feel like they’re both like that burst of freedom(?) but either way I definitely want a lowkey long-distance ex girlfriend for Mags and I don’t know if Fallon could fall into that but imagine the cute letters and the phone calls and late night texts bc maybe they broke up bc Fallon moved out of state or Mags moved away or something and the whole ‘i still feel for you but the distance is KILLING ME’
╰ ☾ ⛧⌒*。 Jacqueline "Jack" Belmont
( MILO SHEPARD, Nick Jonas, 24 ) ugh just imagine she’s his usual bartender and he actively goes when he knows she’s working because for some reason he just feels like she actually sees him despite the fact the only people who ever talk to him / “see” him only view him as that guy who took their kids away from them bc apparently they’re not good parents and Milo & Jack have this nice bond where they sort of talk about their days but it’s vague and it’s usually really later on at night when there’s no one really in the bar besides the usual drunks & dudes lookin to get laid but Milo is strictly there just to unwind after long days or incredibly rough cases and they just have this refreshing bond
( OPHELIA MONROE, Billie Lourd, 22. ) UGH THEY BOTH WORK AT THE ANIMAL SHELTER AND BOND OVER THE POOR ANIMALS and lowkey they both talk eachother out of adopting anymore animals bc you know Ophie has like three dogs and four cats and it’s dramatic but she just keeps feeling so bad for the poor babies who can’t find homes so she takes them and Ophie and Jack go for walks / take their animals out and they’re just girl squad goals as FUCK
 ╰ ☾ ⛧⌒*。 Rowan Penn
( JACKSON ALLEN, Daniel Sharman, 23 ) I’m A Slut For This Ship Okay Please Just Love Me but imagine they met one night when he was drunk and going to a diner and she just happened to be there and Jack mistook her for an old friend of his but he refused to listen to her deny she was that friend and they start talking and it’s an awkward like ‘i’m not who you think i am but you’re so drunk and kinda bein cute talkin about the old days so i’m not gonna stop you’ but the next day he wakes up and he’s like ‘oh my god i just told you all these embarrassing stories and you’re not even who i THOUGHT YOU WERE WHAS GOING ON.’ but they develop a friendship off it / possibly a slowburn or even a FAST BURN like WHATEVER YOU WANT
( LENNON, Jaria Burns, 23 ) YOUTUBE SQUAD, ROWAN IS ACTUALLY LENNON’S INSPIRATION, LIKE HER TOTAL MVP / ROLEMODEL AND THEY MEET AND LENNON IS JUST LIKE A HOT MESS LIKE ‘rowan god damn penn i have been in love w you for YEARS’ just like a total fan and they do a few video collabs and it can either be GREAT and they become BEST friends or it can go HORRIBLY and they lowkey hate eachother but have to pretend to be nice to not ruin eachothers reputations
╰ ☾ ⛧⌒*。 plots off your wishlist !!
During a bank robbery you’re surprised when the criminals seem to recognize you and retreat in fear. Only later do you learn that your high school sweet-heart now runs a global crime syndicate and has you placed on a “No Harm” list. You decide to pay them a visit after all these years. ( I can definitely see Mitch being the one who put one of your muses on the ‘no harm’ list, I rec lola jade park or marley birch !! )
hey, gimme a mlm or wlw plot where they both work for a company like buzzfeed or sourcefed (rest in peace ;( ), and do videos and bits together and are vv cute and everyone thinks so and tbh, they do too but they’re also losers who never do anything about it so they use their status as internet personalities as excuses to be w each other (like date night vlogs ?? find the best place in the city to wind and dine). and they’re just v cute and slow burn w lots of tension. ( BIH SHUT UP LENNON & ROWAN VIBES )
ok but a ‘your apartment is next to/above mine & i can hear you & your partner dancing & singing & the bed moving & you two laughing & talking in hushed tones & it won’t let me sleep so i bitch about it to you 24/7 & then one day it just stops & one day turns into one week & then months & i haven’t seen you smile in forever please let me in, i’ve been knocking for ten minutes’ au. ( SCREAMS HEATH & JACK OR KAZ & TATE just imagine the angst )
i just want a damaged, broken boy who doesn’t have a lot of friends & keeps to himself & a caring, kind girl who takes interest in him & gets him to open up & rocks him in her lap when he can’t stop crying & rubs his back when he has nightmares & teaches him that it’s okay to show his pain because being strong doesn’t have to mean hiding your emotions please give me this ( I can definitely see Xavier being the sad boi & any of your girls consoling him or even Milo being the sad boy bc his job is so rough OR I can see Colby taking care of one of your sad bois or Lily because they’re both that soft lemme hold ur hand for a bit ok )
is anyone down to make an m/f platonic af brotp. where they go on lil friend lunch dates, randomly show up @ each other’s places, and stay up late talking shit about their shitty date they just went on. and they fight like a married couple and hold grudges against each other. but if someone were to fuck with one of them, the other would be like “wait bitch, only i’m allowed to do that.” ( GIRL WTF PLEASE GIVE ME A BROTP FOR LENNON, MAGS, ETHAN OR XAVIER LIKE DAMN IM HERE FOR 50 OF THESE THREADS PLATONIC BROTPS ARE MY AESTHETIC )

Week 8 Big 12 Picks: It’s AG-STRAVAGANZA week!
Tumblr media
Photo cred: Pistols Firing.
Glad to be writing about football again. The Big 10 is back this weekend, as is the Mountain West. The Big 12 has five games on its slate. It’s almost like we have a normal weekend of football in front of us!
A few interesting matchups outside the Big 12: Nebraska at No. 5 Ohio State, No. 23 NC State at No. 14 North Carolina are both in the morning slot. No. 18 Michigan at No. 21 Minnesota, No. 9 Cincinnati at No. 16 SMU are the best non-Big 12 games in the evening, though if you haven’t seen Zach Wilson play yet, staying up for No. 12 BYU vs. Texas State might be worth your while. Wilson is a compelling watch even with the inferior competition.
I’m also curious, in the extremely unlikely event that Nebraska opens its season by beating Ohio State--the Buckeyes are 26-point favorites--how high the Huskers climb. The hype would be unbearable. NU hasn’t beaten Ohio State since first joining the Big 10 in 2011, losing five straight since.
Last week: 1-0 (1.000)
Overall: 12-10 (.545)
Kansas 0, No. 20 Kansas State 45. K-State recently lost Skylar Thompson for the year to injury, which severely dampens the Wildcats’ hopes of challenging for the conference crown. KU, on the other hand, lost Pooka Williams, which severely dampens their hopes of scoring points in this game or any other.
Oklahoma 34, TCU 30. OU is about as likely to lose this game - it would be their third in a row - as a pig would be to voluntarily attend a barbecue. The Frogs are just 1-8 against the Sooners since joining the Big 12. That lone victory came in 2014--not, as I recall, Bob Stoops’s best year. Nevertheless, OU is only a 6.5-point favorite, and I don’t think the Sooners cover here.
No. 17 Iowa State 21, No. 6 Oklahoma State 31. I saw someone on Twitter suggest that these two schools need their own trophy for this game. I think it was an ISU fan. I like the idea, but what would the trophy be, and what would the game be called? I think the trophy should be a tractor. (Call the game the AG-STRAVAGANZA!) Mike Gundy played it coy with the media this week, saying that both Shane Illingworth and Spencer Sanders could both see meaningful playing time this week. A good move on his part. They’re such different quarterbacks. Despite the win over OU, I’m not entirely sold on Iowa State. Brock Purdy has played a lot of hero-ball, at least when I’ve been watching, and that will not fly with this OSU secondary. Vegas is expressing very little confidence in the Pokes this weekend (-3), and I can see why. OSU has lost quite a few of these type games over the past four years. Plus, this series has developed the feel of an actual rivalry game in that time: since 2015 not a single game between these two has been decided by more than a touchdown. ISU only won one of those games, however. The Pokes own a 32-19-3 edge all-time. I see them making this the first non-one-score affair between these two Land Grant schools in awhile. Also, don’t miss this opportunity to look back on Tylan Wallace on the same play destroying not one, not two, not three, but four (four!) different Iowa State defenders last year. May all four of them rest in peace.
Baylor 38, Texas 37. I don’t like picking Baylor. Picking Baylor to win makes me grind my teeth. Makes me want to throw up on the nearest Southern Baptist I can find. Worse, picking these particular Baptists to score an upset makes me want to roll around on the ground and eat grass Nebuchadnezzar-style. But I’ll take Baylor in the upset this week. I guess I’ll book a trip to the dentist. In any case, I think Tom Herman is either oblivious or he just says things that make him sound that way when he’s nervous. Earlier this week he said that “I think the general pulse of the team is that we're in as good a place as we've ever been right now as a team”. When you consider he said this less than a week after losing to OU. When you consider his team is 2-2, and should be 1-3. All I can say is that these are the words of a man who is either scared, or an idiot, or both. Anyway: Baylor and UT have met every year since 1923, and a total of 109 times. Texas owns a 78-27-4 advantage. The Horns lost 24-10 last year in Waco. This is the kind of game that, if Texas loses it, may very well get Herman a pink slip. Baylor hasn’t played since the third of this month. I haven’t researched it much, but here’s my position on the Eyes of Texas. If the band that has to play the fucking song doesn’t want to play it, because they think it’s racist, and if the players who play for the team that the fans cheer for don’t want to hear it, because they, the players, think it’s racist, then why on earth would you play the fucking song?
West Virginia 26, Texas Tech 21. Tech showed no signs of life in their recent 31-15 loss to Iowa State. WVU has a pretty good defense. Should be good enough in Lubbock, too, I think.
...
PS: I spent most of the past week working on finishing a long piece about Belmont University’s ties to private prisons and the most successful human trafficker in American history. It went live yesterday, and if you want to read it, you can here.

Shirley Alston Reeves (born June 10, 1941), born Shirley Owens, is a soul singer who was the main lead singer of the hit female singing group the Shirelles. In addition to Owens, the Shirelles consisted of classmates of hers from Passaic High School, New Jersey: Doris Kenner Jackson, Addie "Micki" Harris McPhadden, and Beverly Lee. Through marriages, she became Shirley Alston and later, Shirley Alston Reeves. Her strong, distinctive voice meant that she was the natural choice for their main lead singer, though Jackson was also featured as the lead on several songs as well. Her nephew, Gerald Alston is the lead singer of The Manhattans. Reeves enjoyed a string of hits with the Shirelles throughout the 1960s. She left the Shirelles in 1975 to begin a solo career, initially recording under the name "Lady Rose". That same year, she recorded an album entitled With A Little Help From My Friends, after the hit song by the Beatles, which featured members of the Flamingos, the Drifters, Shep and the Limelites, the Five Satins, the Belmonts, Danny & the Juniors, Herman's Hermits and La La Brooks of the Crystals. The Shirelles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. She also performed on the Doo Wop 51 PBS special in 2000, and continues to tour under the name 'Shirley Alston Reeves and her Shirelles'. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CBR65cjnFUg60z18oiEJctNRVOOIYDjkC1fkrM0/?igshid=zgkso27n9hce
