Thanks to Daisy Jane and Anne, we managed to book an expedition, which includes staying at the hotel with all expenses paid. It was a friend of a friend type thing as the place usually fills up quickly, even more so with a larger party like ours.

Anne had to make reservations so far in advance - like nearly two years ago - it didn't feel real until I actually got there. To be honest, I almost completely forgot about it until Anne called us up about it and I later got an email from the hotel. And now here we are, exploring the Crystal Cove and learning a lot about all kinds of rocks!

I've been following Anne on social media for a long time - one of the few I've known since the early days and still follow. She's a lifestyle vlogger and musician who's known for her optimism. What I like about her is that she's not overly positive to the point it blinds you to reality - she makes you look for the good while acknowledging that not everything will be sunshine and rainbows. In other words, her optimism is grounded and it's refreshing to see and hear.

I have to say, Anne has been a great help to me, especially after I finished college and didn't know what to do with myself. A lot of her videos are prompts involving self reflection, which really helped me when I needed direction. As for meeting her in person, she's just as sweet and sunny off camera.

Anne's got an interesting life and it was the hardships she went through in childhood that inspired her to start Sunshine After Rain. When she was little, her parents taught her a little game where they try to find the good in anything. It was something that Anne applied to a lot of things in her everyday life, becoming a little ray of sunshine for those who need it. As she got older, she realized how much her optimism can change lives for the better, especially after becoming orphaned and having to live with her aunt, a relative who was a complete stranger at the time.

The first few years of Anne's life with her aunt was life changing as she went through a lot. It was Anne who brought people together as well as helped her aunt move on from the past. She has a way of reaching out to others, being perspective and compassionate - it's amazing how many lives she touched. In return, they helped her get through hard times when she had trouble finding the silver lining after a serious illness left her unable to walk ever again.

Of course, Anne pulled through the hard times - which she credits to her friends and family. That was what led to her making vlogs that eventually became Sunshine After Rain. At the time it was just a bunch of random vlogs about Anne's day to day life around town as well as some chats about what it's like to go around in a wheelchair, how to cope with grief and loss, and how to pick yourself back up after things go wrong. Over time she built a community of friends and Anne was able to inspire more people - something she'd never imagine that she was capable of.

Along with being an inspirational figure, Anne also dabbles in music. As a teen she had a somewhat prolific stint as an artist before pursuing Sunshine After Rain full time. She said the singing thing came by chance when she was discovered by a talent agent during a choir performance. At fourteen she had a hit single, Dance Carnival, which served as the opening of a TV show. Then that led to other movies and shows featuring her music - she wasn't a big name but she was recognizable.

Anne still posts covers and originals from time to time as well as an active member of the community choir. Not too long ago she posted an updated version of Dance Carnival and it's kinda like a new interpretation of the song. What I mean is that Dance Carnival (the original) is clearly an early 2000's pop song, so while it still holds up in my opinion, it also sounds quite dated in terms of production. It's not necessarily a bad thing though - it adds to the charm. The new version with a simple arrangement that's less pop as well as being sung by an older Anne, it shows how versatile the song is by giving it a new interpretation.

Turns out a lot of people thought the same based on the comments. Anne never thought her Dance Carnival cover would be such a hit so now she's inspired to do more covers of old songs. I'm so looking forward to that - especially Dream of Love and Wait for Me.

Joining Anne on this outing are her two oldest friends, Caroline and Beanie. Caroline is her best friend from her hometown and Beanie was the first friend she made when she moved in with her aunt. They show up in Anne's vlogs from time to time, mainly Beanie as well as Jamie and Della, two other good friends. I've met Beanie a few times and he's like an older brother to Anne. In fact, it was Anne who helped him get adopted by a lonely neighbor, which in turn led to her aunt and the neighbor finally working things out after stuff happened that led to the end of their friendship.

It was a lot of fun navigating the Crystal Cove and hanging out with friends. There's all kinds of gemstones hidden around the walls - it's so colorful and pretty! I think my favorite is the golden jade because of the gold flecks and earthy greens. The rose lapis is also pretty, especially the heart shaped ones. Then there's the amethyst pearls that look like something straight out of a fantasy world. A lot of these gems aren't found in other places so that makes it even more exciting and special!

The caves were surprisingly easy to get around so there's no worry about us getting lost. And even if we do, the paths are clearly marked. Though getting lost in a place like this doesn't seem too bad - I wouldn't mind being surrounded by pretty crystals!

Anne and Beanie caught us up with what's been going on in town, from Anne's aunt setting up a fundraiser next week to donate to a shelter to Beanie's mother planning to give the mansion a makeover, and the Weatherbys being pretty much booked for the next few years with their ambitions - there's a lot going on. Caroline's on the move to Harrington, which is about half an hour away from Belleview, so Anne's looking forward to seeing her more. Beanie and Jamie are still in charge of the hotel/restaurant, which they have taken over after the owner moved while Della's in her second year of med school. After that Della's gonna join the clinic and maybe be in charge of it one day. And as usual, Anne's been checking in on everyone, stepping in when there's a problem, always working on keeping everyone - and herself - happy.

We spent most of the day exploring the caves and collecting treasures. According to the guidebook, there's over 5,000 different types of gems in here - many which are unique to this place. It's a miracle that the caves haven't been mined dry - I'd hate to think what would happen if it ever got to that point. As much as we're allowed to explore and collect, we also have to take care or else the Crystal Cove is no more.

Before heading back to the hotel we stopped by the museum to learn more about the caves and its gems. There's a cool exhibition that displays all the known gems that can be found so it was fun going through our finds and learning about them. Although we found a lot of different rocks, we barely made a dent. I think all together we found at least a couple hundred types, which is pretty awesome!

Instead of heading back to the hotel, we did a bit of sightseeing to find a place for dinner. We were planning to rest up before that but we got distracted by the museum. Since we didn't get to explore too much of it today, we're gonna come back tomorrow and visit the rest of the exhibits. I'm looking forward to the jewelry display as well as seeing the gift shop.

As expected, we were out until pretty late. Now it's almost two and I just settled down. Good thing the museum doesn't open till noon so we're planning to go there after brunch, likely spending most of the day there. Then maybe if it's not too busy we'll take a quick trip to the caves to find more hidden gems and if not, we'll do it the day after.
