Hi! I’m currently doing an MA in historical costuming and for my final project I will be making Christine’s “Slavegirl Hannibal” costume as well as the “Elissa” costume, I want to try and base it off of Lucy St Louis costume and I was wondering if you had any in depth, detailed photos of her version of the costumes? Thank you in advance!!

As per maria Bjørnson's costume design, the bodice is meant to be fairly hourglass-shaped, with gold ornaments over the bust, and as a "belt" around the hips. The skirt consists of "ropes" - this has been solved different in different productions. In the front skirt there's also rows of beading, and the same can be seen over the arms.

The Hannibal bodices usually consist of ten vertical panels in alternating red and green velvet, closing in the back with hooks and bars, or hooks and eyes. They are lined with cotton; sometimes white, sometimes black. The UK ones often have black lining. They can have boning channels in the middle of the lining panels, or sewn on as separate boning channels attached over the inner seams. They may or may not have an inner waistband, and they all close in the back. Here's the inside of a UK bodice from 2016:

As you can see, this depicted bodice has additional padding over the chest and hips. This can be done either for general comfort, or if an existing costume is re-fitted for a new actress / dancer.

Lucy St Louis' bodice had a nice hourglass shape, with two rows of pleated trim in front, one row of the same at the side and back seams, alternating with a narrower looped gold trim.

The larger gold panels in front and back is built up of various gold appliqiées and red and green gems. Albeit not Lucy's, they typically look like this when not attached:

As for the grand Elissa gala skirt, it feature a sort of bodice continuation, ending into a pointed front. The grand skirt is just put on top of the main bodice, which allows a super quick costume change, going from ballerina to leading lady:

You have to sit close to notice the discrete horizontal line where the bodice and skirt meets, especially when it's so neatly done as in Lucy's costume. They made the false bodice continuation a lot shorter than previous skirts, which mimick's Carlotta's bodice well.

The skirt itself is made of a shimmering green taffeta (?), possibly shot with black. The hem is multiple rows of fold trims, pleated, and decorated with X-shaped gold trims with gens and tassels. Then an additional red/golden trim on top, and another wavy red/golden trim a bit further up. On top of this is four tabs, red with golden decorations, and a red apron with green/gold trims, fringes and "brooches". There is furthermore a green/red waterfall backdrape, with one of the red tabs on top. Here's the skirt in making, with just the main base and the red apron:

This backdrape is the one they made for Paige Blankson rather than Lucy St Louis. It is not identical, but similar in materials, and identical in shape. So it can serve as an illustration:

The skirt is lifted by various layers of tulle, netting and sometimes also hoops. The skirt should ideally have a hint of bustle, to reflect on what was the fashion of the era even if it's a costume. But some versions go more panier, with wide hips and flatter in the front and back. Like the bodice, the skirt closes in the back with a closing hidden on one side under the backdrape.

I think that is the main breakdown of the costume. I hope it gives you a decent base to work on, at least. I can also make you a photoset, showing the photos overneath plus some more. Best of luck with the project, and have FUN!

Harris-Fandel Co. - The Liverpool Fuzz

"In November of 1968 a new fuzz box was introduced to the world through the pages of Billboard magazine. The pop publication ran a little blurb proclaiming a new fuzz-tone that "shatters sound" and can "last more than 1,000 hours without a battery change". Known as the Liverpool Fuzz Tone, from Ridinger Associates, it was a fairly unique circuit for the time that utilized 3 germanium transistors and ran off of 9v. Primitive and raw, it was a hidden gem of American 60's fuzz. One month later the Liverpool Fuzz was given a similar treatment in the UK publication Beat Instrumental. Although lacking in classic American hyperbole, this small write-up served as the European introduction to one of the most prolific builders of the 1970s. And finally, a few months later we would get to actually see the Liverpool Fuzz highlighted in a photo ad, seemingly associated with New England distributor Harris-Fandel, showing a small table-top unit with a hardwired output cable and an on/off switch. And while the late 60s were flooded with unoriginal copies and clones, the Liverpool Fuzz Tone immediately stood out, and still holds a very significance place in the history of guitar effects…

So what's the deal with this thing and why is it so important?

Well for those unaware, this is the first effect built and released by Ridinger Associates, or better known as Steve Ridinger of Danelectro fame, Arion Effects, and most importantly fOXX! The story is that he originally built the first Liverpool Fuzzes in 1966 when he was just 14 yrs old. The lore goes on to say that as a young teenager he didn't have the money to buy a fuzz pedal, nor did he have access to any fuzz schematics, so he came up with a fuzz/drive circuit of his own. These early units were all hand-wired using perfboard. Around 1968 he did a deal with a US distributor and also outsourced the manufacturing to a third party who paired it down to a small black enclosure and incorporated a printed circuit board for a cheaper/faster build. Ridinger estimates between 500-1,000 were produced in this time (1966-1969). And while that seems like a large number compared to some other pedals we have discussed, the nondescript nature of the blank black enclosure combined with no labeling of any kind, has made it near impossible to track one of these down. And at this point I have only seen 2 in my 20+ years of collecting. Following the Liverpool Fuzz, Ridinger created and released the Fox Wa Pedal, which would be the first time he would use the "Fox" name, and ultimately lead to him starting the fOXX brand just a year later. In the world of vintage guitar pedal collectors these two effects mean a lot. Without Steve Ridinger deciding to dip his toes into building, marketing and distributing stompboxes at such an early age, we may never have heard of fOXX or the best fuzz of all-time, the Tone Machine! And it all started in 1966 with a little hand-built effect called the Liverpool Fuzz Tone."

anyways, absolutely!!! ugh there are so many places that would be worth a visit here, but if you ask me i would say aim for either the center or the south regions. i live in tuscany and i can say it’s always been one of my favorite spots in italy, the central regions like tuscany and umbria and even lazio with rome, they have all these really antique cities that you can’t miss. tuscany is full of vineyards and medieval cities, there’s obviously florence that is amazing but also lucca, pisa, arezzo, and the smaller cities like san gimignano, san quirico d’orcia, monteriggioni, pontedera, and so many more that feel like they are stuck in the medieval and renaissance times, you’ll feel like you’re literally walking in the past. and lazio too, i mean rome is absolutely something you can’t miss. it’s out of this world, there’s something new to discover at every corner and you’ll eat some of the most amazing meals ever. it’s very touristy of course, but it’s worth it. i’ve been to rome a thousand times and i still keep finding new hidden gems whenever i go back. (and in case you do get to rome i have a cute little restaurant to recommend, i’ve eaten there more times than i can count and it never disappointed once!!!)

i’ve traveled less in the south but i can say that puglia and sicily are my absolute go to spots for that part of italy. it’s a very different scenario, they’re even more stuck in the past, in greek times even, and it’s magical. i don’t know how many days you’re planning to visit so i don’t know if you can do both regions because sicily is an island so it takes a bot of travel to get there, but still i would highly recommend both!!

4."Come here you little gremlin" for the bex verse

It’s a rare day off for everyone so they decide to haul the crew to the beach. A local hidden gem of a beach that allows them some semblance of privacy.

Julie digs through the cooler to find a can of her favourite soda. She cracks it open as she reclines back in her chair, enjoying the sound of Bex giggling as she’s chased around by her dads and Luke. 

It goes suspiciously quiet as Julie sips at her soda. Just as she’s about to lower her sunglasses to look around to see what’s up, a stream of water hits her in the face. 

Julie sputters, setting her soda down and pulling off her sunglasses. She dries her face on a towel as the giggling starts back up beside her. 

“Bex! You little…” Julie cries playfully. She swings her legs over the side of her chair to stand as Bex takes off. 

Julie chases after her. “Come here you little gremlin!” she calls. 

It doesn’t take long for her to catch up with the toddler, scooping Bex up into her arms and tickling her like mad. Bex’s laughter rings across the beach and Julie can’t help grinning.

“Unca Carwos! Help me!” Bex yells, noticing him coming out of the water. 

Carlos shakes his head as he laughs. “I know better than that, little one! You’re on your own.”

“Muahahahaha” Julie laughs as she throws Bex over her shoulder. 

Bex kicks and flails her arms, laughing as she tries to appeal to her next potential saviour. “Auntie Cawwie! Auntie Fwynn!”

They both laugh, “No way, kiddo. We know better than to cross Julie.”

“Abuewoooo! Pweeeeease,” she calls as Julie walks them to the shoreline.

Ray looks halfway ready to come to help but stops at Julie’s glare.

“You ready to swim with the fishes?” Julie asks, a teasing glint in her eye. “I’ll spare you if you tell me who set me up,” she whispers.

“It was Uke! IT WAS UKE!” Bex cries. Julie laughs, pressing a kiss to Bex’s cheek before setting her down in the sand. Julie crouches down so she’s at Bex’s level and gives her a conspiratorial look. “You wanna help Auntie get him back?”

Bex nods emphatically. 

“Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do,” Julie says before whispering the rest of her plan to Bex. “You got that?”

Bex nods again before confirming. “Got it!”

“Okay, hop to it little bunny!”

Julie watches her bound off toward Luke and makes her way back to her own chair. She’s met with a suspicious look from Flynn.

“What do you have planned?” they ask.

Julie grins mischievously back at them, “You’ll see.”

It’s not too long later that Bex manages to convince Luke to help her dig a massive hole. 

Julie watches them intently, smiling to herself when she overhears Luke. 

“You want to bury me?” he asks, incredulous.

“Yeah! Like Wiwo”

He laughs, “That’s a bit backwards, Bex. Lilo’s the one in the sand.”

Bex plants her hands on her hips and glares at him.

Luke puts his hands up in defense. “Okay, okay!” He climbs into the hole, which is more wide than deep, nearly perfectly made to fit him. He digs around so there’s enough room before he starts helping Bex pile the sand up on and around him. 

“Papa! Come help!” she calls toward the group of lounging adults. 

Reggie eyes Julie warily as he gets up. She grins as she shrugs at him. He rolls his eyes, sure that she’s up to something but ultimately deciding that it’s not his business and if Julie wants to mess with Luke, then that’s her prerogative. He heads over to help Bex bury Luke. 

As Reggie works, Bex gathers her buckets, filling them up with water and setting them around Luke.

“What are you up to Bexi-boo?” Reggie asks.

“Nuffin,” she says as she continues her mission. Once she’s satisfied with her bucket stash, she returns to help Reggie pat down the sand that’s covering Luke. 

“You stuck?” she asks him.

Luke tries to wiggle, causing some cracks to form in the sand covering him. “Yep.”

“No, you’re not.” she counters as she adds more sand, packing over the cracks. “Auntie JUWIE!” she calls once she’s satisfied. “Come see!”

Luke’s eyes widen in concern. “Bex, what do you have planned?”

“Nuffin, don’t wowwy ‘bout it.” she replies, plunking down to sit on his stomach.

“Oof,” he breathes out at the unexpected contact. 

Julie stands over Luke, casting a shadow over his face and grinning down at him. “What do we have here, Bex?”

“Stuck ‘Uke.”

“It does seem like we do indeed have a stuck Luke, doesn’t it? Shame.” She bends down to grab the nearest bucket of water, directing a sinister grin his way. Bex jumps off of him and runs to collect the next bucket.

“Julie, no!” he cries just before she unleashes the water onto his face. 

He sputters as she dumps the second bucket on him. 

Luke jumps up out of the sandpile and growls as he lunges at Julie. She squeals as he throws her over his shoulder, running toward the ocean. He dives into the water, submerging both of them. 

They both resurface, laughing hysterically. Julie tries to drag Luke back under but he sweeps her legs out from under her, effectively dunking her again. When she jumps on his back, he falls backwards into the water. She finally settles for incessantly splashing him, only stopping when Bex calls from the shore.

“Unca ‘Uke! That wasn’t the plan!”

Luke grins at her, “No? It wasn’t? You sure?” He runs back through the surf and onto the beach, scooping Bex up and dragging her back out into the water with him.

Honestly, I wish I knew and could tell you! Because I mostly search for clothes within Japanese shops or secondhand platforms, I don't know much outside of that. However, if you are looking for lolita fashion, perhaps the Lolita Fashion Collective (which stocks brands from around the world, and ships from USA) would be a start?

For vintage inspired girly fashion that is not lolita, I've talked to quite a few lolitas who enjoy Miss Patina (based in UK) if you like that aesthetic.

For secondhand lolita (in English), the best platform for you to peruse is Lace Market. Fanny and I wear a lot of classic lolita; so assuming that is the style you are looking for, you can filter using the "classic lolita" tag and further filter by seller location in EU/N.A.: example search. Note that since these tags are user defined, pricing, selection and results vary and you will have to filter through items yourself. But fashion is all about finding a hidden gem you love, right?

Today's scary movie was another one rec'd by Possessed By Horror on youtube, Censor. In the Thatcherite 1980s, the UK was in a panic over ultraviolent horror/slasher movies ("video nasties") and in an order to reduce crime rates the government created jobs, raised wages, and made improvements to housing, education, and youth intervention went bananas on rating/censoring movies for fear seeing an obviously fake decapitation in a movie might turn a normal child into a psychopathic axe murderer (this happened a lot) (there is no proof this has ever happened). Our gal Enid works for the censoring bureau in a dismally lit, excellently costumed and set-designed 1980s basement office situation. Eventually, watching the films stirs unresolved memories and emotions from a childhood tragedy, and, well it's a horror movie so you can imagine and I won't spoil it.

Fantastic use of real "video nasty" content as well as excellent modern homages to gory slasher movies, a lead character who is both unreliable narrator and triumphant final girl, and the whole thing is resolved beautifully. A hidden gem of a sad, bloody thriller.
