Milwaukee-based electronic artist Thane returns for quite the tape this past NYE. The record is described as “exploring the meaning of freedom in an algorithm run world”. Throughout, it appears Thane is taking certain EDM genre tropes and contorting and re-contextualizing them in an almost “hyperpop” way, to form his own original style. For example, in “THANE-MAX 5000”, (which feels maximalist even in the title) the song bounces from techno, trance, to drum and bass with textured left-field electronic sensibilities scattered throughout the atmospherics making for a fresh, hyper-rave feel that takes on its own personality. The result of the album is something incredibly fresh, reminiscent (just in terms of texture and sonic palate)to that of Jamie xx’s “In Colour”. Previously collaborating with the likes of Anderson .Paak, BJ the Chicago Kid, Mick Jenkins, and Kojey Radical on 2016’s “Topia”, “The Algorithm Isn’t Working” shares no spotlight with other musicians, but immediately demands your attention. Listen to my personal favorite, “Limitless”, above. It is a brooding, dark garage-tinted song with eclectic Gospel/R&B samplings that is at once inspiring and darkly moody at the same time.

‘‘Looks like Kurt Cobain’’ in relief the band expressed when they saw their new singer (Mazvērsīte, 2018, p 50). Not only did Freimanis look like Cobain at the time, with his bleached hair but their debut album ‘‘Putni’’ (1998) [transl. ‘‘Birds’’] was influenced by Nirvana and Whitesnake. Whilst grunge was mainstream in the United States in the 1990s, it`s influence also extends to Latvia.
In 2004, Freimanis wrote the song ''The War Is Not Over'' and gave it to Latvian beloved musicians Valters Frīdenbergs and Kārlis Būmeisters, known as Valters & Kaža (members of Putnu Balle). The song won the Latvian National selection and represented Latvia in the international Eurovision contest in 2005, held in Kyiv, Ukraine, fisnishing in the 5th position.

Well. Huh. Okay. This is gonna be a journey. We start with a song I just think is awesome. And then go into a high energy song about protecting yourself from heartbreak. And then we just get increasingly thirsty for a bit.
"Also there is a very horny sapphic song on here. Anyway." - this quote from a few weeks ago is also true. Except maybe more so.
Then we switch gears completely. Energy. A low key observational singer/songwriter thing. A ska song. Ending with a song from what I'm pretty sure is the Mega Man rock opera.
Yup.

From Qaraami to Dance-Pop - Women of East Africa
Tumblr media
Starting our journey off in... Eastern Africa! Yeah, alright, maybe spoiled slightly in the title of the post.
I've had so much fun with this over the last few weeks, and the result of that is brought to you here through some of my top picks. A moment of silence for the albums I wanted to include but didn't due to not being easily accessible </3
The list is not ordered or ranked in any way, though I will admit I've a certain fondness for Saba and Khadja Nin in particular <3.
For ease of access, here's a playlist of some top tracks from each album (ca. and hour and a half), here's an extended version with additional tracks from some artists not featured on this list (ca. two and a half hours), and here's a playlist of the full albums (ca. seven hours), for all your shuffling needs.
Saba - Jidka (2007) Spotify Youtube - A fun and playful somali italian-influenced pop record with some elements R&B, uplifting and a joy to listen to. As a side node, Saba's life story is definitely a google worth, imo.
Mim Suleiman - Umbeya (2012) Bandcamp Spotify Youtube - An obvious inclusion in my book, just a great beat / electro album with some elements of soul. You really fall into the world of this album.
Aster Aweke - Aster (1989) Spotify Youtube A lovely Tizita album, a gem of ms. Aweke's sizeable discography (which you are definitely encouraged to dig into <3). I am so in love with the horns and little flourishes, and the rhythm is just... mwah. Aweke ties it all together really well.
Khadja Nin - Ya Pili (1994) Spotify Youtube - A already mentioned my fondness for Ms. Nin, but damn if it doesn't bear repeating... By all accounts an incredible record that really should be on your list.
Faytinga - Numey (2006) Spotify Youtube - The steady rhythms and Faytinga's distinctive vocals makes for a great experience certain to draw you in. Impresseive record from an equally impressive person.
Muthoni Drummer Queen - She (2018) Bandcamp Spotify Youtube - A bubbling hip hop album with some flavors of R&B and dancehall. The production on this is great and Muthoni is an incredibly engaged performer. It's just overflowing with life and so, so definitely worth a listen.
Sophie Nzayisenga - Queen of Inanga (2021) Bandcamp Spotify Youtube - The album title says it all, really. Even as someone who's not traditionally drawn to the acoustic for the most part, I really enjoyed this album.
Maryam Mursal - The Journey (1998) Bandcamp Spotify Youtube - An unavoidable inclusion on a list like this, and for good reason. A poppy qaraami record with some jazzy notes that deserves all of the acclaim it's gathered over the years - Mursal clearly knows what she's doing and she does it well.
MC Yallah - Yallah Beibe (2023) Bandcamp Spotify Youtube - Ending here with a very recent release, MC Yallah's latest is just such a solid hip hop record. It flows really well, and the industrial undertones really worked for me, which is rare. Definitely someone to keep a look on, imo.
... and that's the list!
Do you have any favorites not on here? Please (please <3) feel more than free to share! Have fun!

Album: Achievement - PilotRedSun (2016)
Tumblr media
If you were on the strange side of YouTube often between 2013-2020, chances are you've seen a PilotRedSun animation. The multi-media project is Michael Epler's.
Achievement is one of those albums that will stick in my head forever. PilotRedSun has a way of stringing chords and melodies together that gives each track the astonishing ability to embed itself within the crevices of the mind. It is entirely instrumental, the sound design is transportive and immersive -- a hundred worlds live in this album.
To me, a child of 2002, this album feels like a vague memory. A sense of something imaginary, something distant, something simultaneously less-than and greater-than reality. It is very digital-age, early internet, niche internet, MS Paint. The 8-bit and reverby drum elements are reminiscent of the 80s/arcade video games. It also feels jungle-gym-esque, though I can't make a concise argument for that.
This album was the reason I enrolled in AP music theory in high school. I didn't actually get to go to in-person school that year, so I have not yet been able to identify the exact elements that make PilotRedSun's songs so fucking interesting and deeply painful, but I'm going to someday.
Personal Highlights:
funny animals
fat cat
8-train
thanks

I released a new song on Friday, it’s been an interesting experience putting stuff out there and I’ve gotten all kinds of responses. Some people think it’s great and well produced, some people think it’s boring and stupid, some people told me I was going to hell and some added it to their radio station lineups. Personally I think it’s fun to finally do something again that kind of exists in the world, but it’s going to take some time to carve a niche and feel like I have a thing going or know what I’m doing with it. Before 2020 I had finally found a place in the world that made sense to me, traveling and performing my incredibly strange little mix of performance art, poetry and experimental music, building something where I was actually getting paid for it, collaborating with and giving opportunities to others when I could, it felt like a vocation - I had something of meaning to offer the world, and the world accepted. Something I was blessed to learn in the past few years is that I still have value even when I don’t have something to offer, and I’ve gained some needed distance between my sense of self and my artistic output. But I’d like to find more of a place amongst others again, within my new limitations and outlooks. So that’s what I’m up to. Hope it resonates with some. You can hear the new project here:

Hahaha let's pretend it's not been a month since I posted here, whoops. Anyway. The mood in this set of songs ranges from edgy kinda moldboard type songs to real high energy goofy stuff. Actually, I think that every song on here could be the basis for a TTRPG character. Some of them would be more fun to be around than others tho.
