Fluorite from Taraba State, Nigeria
This piece (along with everything else we post here) is completely natural and unpolished. The intense blue coloration you see in the picture is caused by daylight fluorescence. This fluorite changes color in the sun! It is dark purple in indoor lighting and turns a vibrant blue in sunlight.

Mineral Swag Tournament Finals
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay y'all, this is it. The FINAL for the Mineral Swag Tournament.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fluorite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fluorite is a fantastic mineral. It would not have gotten this far otherwise. It comes in a ton of colors, it naturally forms both octahedra and cubes (and massive deposits), and it show brilliant bright blue color under UV light. Fluorescence (the phenomena) is named that because of fluorite!
Tumblr media
It also does this fun thing (that other minerals do as well, but it is common among fluorite) where it changes color as it forms because of changing impurities in the solution from which it grows! Elements like iron, copper, manganese, chromium (and more!) can replace individual ions in fluorite's chemical structure and cause the light to reflect different wavelengths and we therefore see that as a different color. This can also happen if a fluorite ion is missing because the sample has been irradiated (for example) and NOTHING replaces it and so the light still reflects in a different way! That is one of the ways we get purple fluorite and this method of producing color is known as color centers.
Tumblr media
Of course, not all fluorite fluoresces. Not all fluorite forms cubes or octahedra. Some fluorite is colorless. Some of it looks like an ugly little piece of translucent rock. Or a vein of purple mineral in a crack between two other rocks. It would be irresponsible for me to insinuate that all fluorite is this majestic.
But there are some properties that you will always find in fluorite. It has four directions of cleavage. It is the defining mineral for a 4 on the Mohs hardness scale. It will always be made of calcium and fluoride in a 1:2 ratio. These things are some of what define fluorite as a distinct mineral!
Opal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Opal is a beautiful gemstone. Please note that I did not call it a "beautiful mineral" because it is not technically a mineral. It is a solid, inorganic substance with a defined chemical formula, but it lacks the specific crystal structure which minerals MUST have to be considered a mineral.
This crystal structure is the entire reason why fluorite is capable of forming cubes and octahedra. And why garnet forms dodecahedra and beryl forms columns and so on. Opal only comes in those fun little oval shaped stones because it was cut that way! Fluorite forms cubes because it just knows how. Otherwise, opal forms shapeless masses that fracture rather than cleave (fluorite cleaves--four ways). That being said, opal's lack of crystal structure allows it to sometimes be iridescent.
After all, there is a reason opal made it this far. When it shines, it is beautiful. There are several varieties of precious opal (opal that displays its trademark play-of-color/iridescence) and they are all very fun to look at. These precious opals are made of microscopic silica spheres that light reflects off of in weird ways and causes opal to look like it is glittering with a dozen different colors.
However, one would be remiss to forget common opal! Some opal is milky white or a translucent blue, and if you're going to love opal at her fire opal, you better also love her at her common opal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some raw pieces of opal (common opal on the left). Note how they break irregularly. They have conchoidal fracture, which both quartz and normal glass (all of which are just silica) also have. I personally think conchoidal fracture is pretty neat.
Also, while the opals on the right would still be considered precious opal, they are what the average person is likely to find. Just little bits of iridescence here and there.
And, like fluorite, while not all opals have all of the cool features, they do have some similarities. They will always have conchoidal fracture if they break. And they will always be made of hydrated SiO2.
...That's all I have for these guys, I think! I hope I have been as impartial (and accurate) as possible while presenting these, your FINAL mineral swag contestants. If you have any questions or anything, let me know. The Rock Swag Tournament will start shortly after this concludes! Submit your rocks here! And specific rock formations or named rock varieties here!

Probably one of the most successful examples of a crystal with internal ghosts. The precise orientation of the framing allows to see the presence of so many dark purple 'concentric shells' within a colourless fluorite crystal to be clearly visible. We can consider them to all intents and purposes snapshots that unmistakably show us the sequence of growth of the crystal, which in this case was formed from a central nucleus. Colour variations naturally indicate a 'pulsating' chemical composition change in the mineralising fluids that created the crystal. This shows the shape of a perfect cube bevelled by rhombododecahedron faces. The crystal is supported by a group of lamellar crystals of pinkish barite. Its size is 12mm. Originates from Berbes, Asturias, Spain.

Witch Tools | Crystals
“Crystals and stones are used in rituals and spells for their energy and corresponding properties.”
Shapes of Crystals: [Source] [Authors note: The link has MORE crystals I just used the basic shapes most Witches use for their craft] Crystal Uses: [Source]
Ball: Cube: Pyramid
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Egg: Heart: Isis:

Geode: Generator: Obelisk:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raw: Palm: Cluster: Tumbled: Wand:
Tumblr media
Ball/Sphere: Crystal that is shaped into a ball from a larger piece of crystal…quartz crystals rarely occurs naturally as a sphere. The Sphere is associated with Harmony, scrying, even energy all around.
Crystal Pyramid: Manifestation, intently focused energy. prosperity.
A crystal shaped like a pyramid, it has four equal triangular sides that meet to a point with a flat square base. It’s effective for amplifying energy. *Egyptian used the pyramids to send the pharaoh's soul straight to the gods. Crystal Generators and Obelisks are 2 shapes that are often confused with one another, just count the number of sides. A generator has six equal sides and an Obelisk has four. Generators, Obelisks and Pyramids are great shapes to direct/amplify energy. Better used in crystal grids, as it will amplify/boost energy.
Crystal Wands: Healing and rituals, moving/directing energy.
Crystal wands have many uses, they can be used for massage therapy (eg a massage wand), acupressure and reflexology. They can also be used to direct energy in a certain direction, draw negative energy away from you and to activate crystal grids. Crystal wands can be used for chakra healing.
Crystal Eggs: Balance, Fertility, healing
The pointed end of an egg shaped crystal is often used by practitioners of acupressure, reflexology and massage. Similar to spheres, crystal eggs are a great shape to hold whilst meditating. Crystal eggs represent fertility, birth and new beginnings.
Cluster: A group of crystals growing together having many points and sharing the same base clusters rapidly radiate energy in all directions. The cluster radiates energy, meditation and unity.
Crystal Cube: consolidates energy, grounding and meditation, connects to the energy of the earth.
Tumbled: Gentle, constant energyRaw: Strong, Sporadic, pure energy.Double Terminated/Twin: Receives and emits energy transmits informationPalm: Grounding, healing, “Worry stone.”
Isis: Feminine energy, healing emotional, hurt and distress.Geode: Amplifies, conserves and releases energy, internal healing.
Crystal Heart: Sends love across time and space.Crystal Points, Generators and Obelisks: Energy amplifier, six facets
There are 219 Crystals [And I do not have the time or energy to go over ALL of them when we Wiccans can’t use/afford that many, and so we’ll only cover the basics/most used Crystals.
So other than Shapes that signify the ‘power’ of the crystal, what about a specific use? So here is a list of most common crystals that I have seen, that was recommended by other witches or popped up in my readings.
Amethyst | Azurite  | Ametrine  | Aquamarine  |  Agate  |  Amazonite  | Bloodstone  |  Beta  |  Black Obsidian  |   Bismuth  | Chinese writing rock, chrysoprase, Chrysoprase, Citrine, Clear Quartz,  Dream Quartz, Danburite, diamond, Dalmation Stone Fluorite. | Garnet. Herkimer Diamond | Hematite | Jasper | Jade | Kyanite | Kunzite Lepidolite/Lapis Lazuli, Labradorite Malachite | Nephrite | Opal | Onyx | Pink Opal  |   Peridot  |  Rose Quarts  |  Rhodonite, Ruby | Sardonyx  |  Selenite, Sapphire, Sunstone, Smoky Quartz, Scolecite, seraphinite | Topaz | Tigers Eye  |  Tourmaline  |  Zoisite
*Clear Quartz: A substitute in case you can’t use a specific crystal for an intention or spell.
What you NEED to KNOW!
*Need to KNOW
Be VERY careful with crystals. Not ALL of them can be in direct sunlight and not ALL can be placed in water. Some Crystals are sun/water types and if you need to charge them or use them make sure you know which is which!
Crystals that will dissolve or have a chemical reaction when exposed to water. ____________________________________________________________
No Water: Angelite, Azurite, Calcite, celestite, flourite, hematite, kyanite, leoidolite, malachite, mica, pyrite, selenite, turquoise. No Sun: Amber, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Beryl, Celestite, Chrysoprose, Citrine, Flourite, Kunzite, Opal, Rose Quartz, Sapphire, Smoky Quartz, Topaz. Safe In Water: Agate, Amber, Amethyst, Apatite, aventurine, Citrine, Clear Quartz, Jasper, Moonstone, Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz. ___________________________________________________________

Mineral Swag Round 3: I Don't Think There's a Loser Here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amethyst! Amethyst beat spinel last round (purple > pink, I suppose) so here we are. Amethyst is a purple variation of quartz and it gets its color from iron impurities in quartz crystals. BECAUSE it is imperfect, it is purple and therefore more loved! Like I said before, there's a metaphor in there somewhere. It's pretty common (I mean quartz is found EVERYWHERE) and relatively inexpensive (unless you want a massive beautiful slab of it) and all around a good mineral. It comes in all shades of purple, because the intensity of the color depends on how much iron is in it.
As for fluorite, I underestimated nephrite in the beginning because it kept winning, but fluorite finally took it down! Which is good, fluorite is AWESOME. Fluorite forms octahedra (aka little d8's) or cubes. It comes in many colors! Most prominently are purple and green. But yellow, blue, and even pinkish colors can occur.
It is also fluorescent (it glows under UV light). Fluorite gets its name from the Latin “to flow,” because it is used as a flux in iron smelting to make the slag less viscous (more runny). However, FLUORESCENCE, as in the property of materials glowing under certain wavelengths of light, gets its name from FLUORITE. How rad! It may not be a hard mineral that necessarily lends itself to jewelry (although you definitely can still use it for jewelry—just don’t slam or drop your stuff!), but it has the RANGE.
Some fluorite samples from Elmwood, Tennessee, even look like little purple Borg cubes.
